Skype has burnt out my sound card

I have just installed skype about 2 hours ago and have not been able to set it up properly.  I keep receiving a message that there is no sound card installed.  There is actually a sound card and I use my computer to listen to music watch videos etc.  Since installing Skype I can't even listen to music.  How do I get in touch with Skype to sort this problem out.  I don't want to spend any more time messing with it.  I didn't even want Skype in the first place - I was forced into installing it for work.

Skype really doesn't do anything to modify your audio device hardware install.  Audio levels are really the only thing that gets adjusted by the software.  If Skype does not detect your sound device, then it's not interacting with the sound device it doesn't see.  You may have other 3rd party audio programs that could be hogging up direct access to your audio.
You can always completely uninstall Skype and all its files.  If the audio doesn't return you have an issue with your audio drivers.  You have an option of reverting to a window restore point before you installed Skype. You can also download and install the latest audio driver package for your computer as that may resolve the weird issue you are having.  If you want to post the name of your audio device and computer I can try to point you in the right direction.  The other day I assisted someone with a very odd audio issue that was resolved after I pointed him to drivers that were newer and compatible with his audio device.
Skype FAQ you can follow to uninstall/install

On a side note, toggling "Exclusive Mode" settings (Speakers/Mic) might have an impact on how other software interacts with your audio devices.

Skype can't access my sound card. It fails every time and says "problem with recording device."
I've tried running it as an administrator, uninstalling and reinstalling, I'm pretty sure I've turned off any realtek sound effects or enhancements. I've made sure that applications can take exclusive control, but nothing has helped so far. DirectX diagnostics attached below

  • Sound card fails when modem taken out- no longer wo

My OS is Windows 98 First Edition.
I recently replaced an internal, PCI slot LT Winmodem and put in a USR internal, ISA slot modem. I didn't follow exact instructions for this sort of change but the Creative website says that one of their sound cards can fail to work when some piece of hardware is changed. I took out my sound card and see that it only says "Ensoniq" on it and doesn't have any of the usual Creative ID markings on it. [My software to identify hardware says it's a "Creative Sound Blaster Audio PCI 64V" sound card. Another hardware-identifying app I have calls it "Creative SB PCI 28 (Ensoniq ES37) sound card".]
When I want to listen to a webcast or play any WAV or MID file, I get:
"MPlayer2 (Windows Media Player, v. 6.4.07.24) has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. MPLayer2 caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll at
05f:bff9dba7." [Same message when I use Real Player.]
At this same time, the following message appears: "Windows Media Player error: Can't play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding. Error=80040256."
I got this Creative sound card back in June 999 when I got the computer that contains it. It's worked fine up 'til the recent modem change.
In an attempt to fix this problem, I removed all entries and driver files for it, deleted a bunch of files that Creative says should be deleted for such a problem. I turned off the computer and took out the sound card and put it into another PCI slot. Then when I turned the computer back on, Windows says it found new hardware and wanted to install software for it. But I used the hardware drivers CD I got with the computer and installed the Creative files for my sound card. But this didn't help: I still cannot play any sounds.
The sound card fits firmly and squarely into the PCI slot.
What is the correct order of steps to take in order to end this problem and restore to the sound card the ability to produce sounds? I'm still annoyed by the error message due to the sound card apparently causing some problem - by use of Windows Media Player or RealPlayer - with Kernel32.dll?
Would getting the latest driver files from Creative's website fix this or does it sound like something else is wrong?
[My OS is Windows 98 First Edition.]
    Thanks

I doubt newer drivers would help this.
I'd suggest checking your IRQ settings a conflict (sharing), particularly between the new modem and the soundcard. You can determine the resources using device manager, but using the System Information tool isn't quite as tedious.
Do you have another PCI slot to try?

I'm not at home now (so I can't give here in this forum the best of info right now) but I have looked at IRQ settings several times when at home. I know I've seen the Sound Blaster/Ensoniq sound card holding the same IRQ as my USB port. [Both are on IRQ 0 along with some "computer steering" entry which I've read is OK to be with any hardware item's IRQ.] [I've never used my USB port. Perhaps I can just disable it and thereby free up the IRQ just for the sound card. Does this sound reasonable to do?]
I'll report back here later on what I was able to do with the IRQs and if any change there helped. [Should I take out the card and put it into some other PCI slot? I have 4 PCI slots, one being occupied by the sound card.]
    Thanks for your help

  • Has anyone written an ASIO sound card VI?

Has anyone used ASIO sound card drivers with LabVIEW?  I've seen a few requests for it, but no one has posted anything useful.
The standard LabVIEW sound VIs use lvsound2.llb, which seems to talk to DirectSound on Windows.
    Thanks.

Here is a follow-up to my posting on 5/17/2009, where I pointed out that we have an ASIO interface available for LabVIEW at http://www.lasi.arizona.edu/.  If you are interested in this software, please contact me at:
    Ben Sternberg
    University of Arizona
    Laboratory for Advanced Subsurface Imaging
    [email protected]
Previous users of our software have reported a wide range of applicability for this software. This applicability has changed as the ASIO software and LabView program evolved.   Our ASIO driver no longer works with the recent versions of LabView (LabVIEW 2010 and newer).
    Some possibilities are:
1). Our ASIO driver will work with older versions of LabView (LabVIEW 2009 and older).  There are often a number of sellers on EBay who are selling older versions of LabView.  You can then use a program with the ASIO driver with this older version.
2). Produce an executable of your program (using an older version of LabView) that can then be used without even having a copy of LabView on your computer.
3). Modify the ASIO driver for the newest version of LabView.
The following is a further explanation of the history and current limitations of the code, which was prepared by Terry Leach, the consultant who wrote the ASIO interface and the GenMon data acquisition program for us.
Our ASIO interface was built in LabView 6.x using the CIN (code interface node) technology.  Source code to interface to the ASIO 2.0 sound driver was obtained from Steinberg.  http://www.steinberg.net/en/home.html
This development was performed under an NSF grant obtained and managed by Dr. Ben Sternberg of the University of Arizona.
During the development time, our ASIO interface consisted of expanding and generalizing the Steinberg code to allow easy creation of "channel" C++ objects as well as status bits to track ASIO sound buffer performance in real time.  In addition C++ code was added so that we could call the Steinberg interface from the LabView development environment.  This code was compiled and built into a CIN.  The CIN was then incorporated as a binary directly into ASIO.vi.  ASIO.vi then became our interface to the sound driver when in the LabView development environment.  Several LabView applications were built making use of ASIO.vi.  There are three distinct layers to the sound interface.  The lowest layer being the ASIO 2.0 compliant driver of whatever hardware you intended to access.  The intermediate layer being the Steinberg/UofA/LV CIN, and the final layer being ASIO.vi and its use in your application program.
Our applications, built on point acquisitions which were always a power of 2 (supporting real time FFT calculation), meshed very well with sound buffer sizes which were also powers of 2.  The ASIO driver, at that time, supported a maximum sound buffer size of 16384 points.  As the ASIO interface is built on double buffering this gave us 16384/(sample rate) = seconds of time to perform our application calculations in real time.
    Several things happened over time.
1).  The ASIO 2.0 driver's (low layer, for Echo Audio equipment) maximum point buffer was reduced from 16384 points to 2048 points.  This reduced our application's processing time (prior to sound buffer lossage) to 1/8.  While it would be possible to modify the middle layer to manage a virtual sound buffer of larger size, no further development funding was available.
2).  The Steinberg code hard coded the name of the ASIO 2.0 compliant driver to be found and instantiated from the Windows Registry.  As the hardware vendor produced new hardware and subsequent upgrades of the ASIO 2.0 driver to support that hardware, they also changed the name of the driver in the Windows Registry.  For a quick fix, this required recompilation and rebuilding of the ASIO CIN, and subsequent update of the ASIO.vi.  It would also be possible to scan the Windows Registry and let the user pick which ASIO 2.0 compliant driver to use.
3).  As of LabView 2010, National Instruments no longer supports the CIN development interface.  This makes it impossible to update the CIN as required by the aforementioned item.  While it would be possible to convert the CIN to a DLL, we do not have funding available for this modification at this time.
To use the ASIO.vi LabView interface at this time, without further development, means running under an older version of LabView.  It may also mean a recompilation and rebuilding of the ASIO CIN contained in ASIO.vi if the name of the ASIO 2.0 compliant driver in the Windows Registry does not match that hard coded into the ASIO CIN.

I'm not at all familiar with pulseaudio configuration. Does anyone know of a good way for me to resolve this issue? Have I even identified the correct issue?
    UPDATE:
I was able to work around my problem for the moment by symlinking the configuration file to the location that pulseaudio was actually looking for it
    # mkdir -p /usr/share/alsa/ucm/HDA\ Intel
    # ln -s /usr/share/alsa/cards/HDA-Intel.conf /usr/share/alsa/ucm/HDA\ Intel/HDA\ Intel.conf
Although this does get my sound back, it is a hacky work-around and obviously not ideal. Anyone who knows a bit about pulse configuration, I welcome your input here

Thank you so much for posting your solution!
I was having the same problem. The funny part was it started happening (and not always) after KDE says that the Intel HDA device is "gone" and asking me to remove it from my configuration. Even by saying no it wouldn't work. Killing pulseaudio with
    pulseaudio -k
would have everything fallback to Alsa but starting pulseaudio again wouldn't work.
Rebooting right away doesn't take care of the issue either but after a while the problem would go away...
    Any inputs would be appreaciated!

Hi, you all. Pls help me with this problem of my SB Audigy Platinum (SB0060). In Windows XP or even Windows Vista, they can find out my sound card as an Multimedia new hard ware, but when I install sound card driver from CD (original CD driver) fail to install and a message like this: "we cannot find any support products in this computer, pls make sure that is is plugged in your computer already...". That is quite odd. Your Audio HQ should look like this: http://img23.echo.cx/img23/8494/hqdecode7kl.jpg. If not, then you should uninstall you drivers (using the CTZAPXX.exe app on the CD) and reinstall them.

The program does the same thing on my old T5400 and my current Cambridge MegaWorks 550. My brother has the Audigy 2 ZS also and his Logitech Z-5300s do it as well. I think the program is funky, not your speakers.

    <EM></EM>
Go into the Options for your DVD software (this applies to any player, not just WinDVD) and set it to S/PDIF Passthrough. This will send the digital signal to your card, which will see it and decode it. Setting WinDVD to 7. mode will try to have the CPU decode the signal. If it doesn't work with WinDVD, then try using Media Player Classic 6.4.x.x and setting the decoder settings to Digital Passthrough. Note that you need to make sure the that decoders are enabled in the Audio HQ (for which you may need to reinstall your drivers.
Note: DTS-ES supports 6.. Dolby Digital EX supports 7., I think.

  • I have a mistirious sound card...

Hello, I have bought a computer from DELL , i don't remember excetly but about more then .5 year ago, and i bought it with sound blaster sound card.
Now I have reinstaled Windows and my sound cards works but Audio Control panel cannot reconise it and control it.
I don't know wich sound card do i have. But windows saies it is Sound Blaster X-Fi.
I have installed the latest driver with Windows atomatic update because no Driver on Sound Blaster Web site works with mine.
My sound card has the same connectors on the back as X-Fi Titanium PCI EXpress but my sound card uses PCI slot not PCI Express but on te web site I cannot see like it.
My sound card support 3 different modes: Games, Entertament, Audio Recording
    My model number is: SB0770
    Serial Number: MASB0773837R0644K
So ok, i went to this page http://support.creative.com/kb/ShowA....com,case=0846 to find out wich sound card do i have, but there is no sound card in the list with my Model number.
    p.s.
So please sound blaster give me the link to the latest Drivers and Control Panel with will work with my card

%Thanks, but that did not work at all,
I was brouwsing internet and i found out that this card wixch is Sb0770 is spesial edition of Dell, wich is very similar to specs of sound blaster X-Fi Titanium, wich uses PCI instid of PCI express slot.. but, drivers from original X-Fi Titanium does not work with it, it requairs a spesial drivers.
I have Cd with drivers for it wich came with my computer, but thay are old...
unfortionaly on the Dell web site i could not find drivers pack for this sound card, but i was able to find fresh drievers on it's competitor web site wich works with Vista SP2 very well, so now can anjoy sound.
    p.s.
I am profesional musician and i did not play games to much, but now i have a little bit more time, i know what sound good and what sounds bad, Unfortionaly this card and i suppouse all sound Blaster cards has cheap D/A converters so sound is not that good , but fortionaly this card has a digital ADAT output, so i can connect it directly to my RME Fireface audio interface and the sound is realy better....

  • Setting ALSA sound card system wide (rather than just in KDE)

    Hi,
I've got an HTPC with an ATI Radeon HD 4350 graphics card running Arch x86. It has its own integrated sound card for outputting audio via HDMI, which is detected by ALSA as a separate device. I've managed to set it as the default audio device in KDE 4 (via System Settings). This allows applications such as Amarok and SMPlayer to properly output audio to the HD 4350's integrated sound card, but software such as Flash and MPlayer (from the command line) are still outputting audio to the motherboard's built-in sound card. How can I change this setting on a system-wide level? I've tried running alsaconf as root and adding

  • Encore 2 quits at start: cannot find sound card

My PC has a built-in sound card and seems to work fine with all the video and audio programs I have installed(i.e., ULead VideoStudio9,VideoReDo Plus, etc. I never had any other program question the sound card. Do I need to add a separate card just to run Encore or is there a workaround to this problem? Feedback is appreciated.
    This is my setup:
    Gateway GT5014
    2.8 GHz/1GB of RAM / XP Media Center Edition V 2002 SP2

    Hi Neil,
I try to run DXDiags.exe but file is not found in the system - also, did a search for the file with zero result.
The search in Help Centre yielded no list of entries for DirectX. "No search results found"" to be exact.
I have installed and reinstalled the tryout app. a few times and again today to run the test. This is what I get after the application says "a sound card cannot be found":
    "Application error:
The instruction at "0x7c910de3" referenced memory at "0xfffffff8".The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program."
Do you think there is something wrong with the tryout version?
Note: I did a search for DirectX and the results show a whole list of files with "directX" in them, so I think it is installed because other programs have required the latest version to either install or run.

  • MacBook Sound Card

    Hello, everybody.
I have a black MacBook, 2.4 GHz, and I ran a PA through it once while trying to mix audio and it blew out the sound card and the speakers. I would like to be able to use the headphone jack again, but it doesn't work; I was wondering how I could fix this problem, preferably by purchasing a new sound card and replacing it myself if this is possible.
Thank you very much for your time.
    Colton

    Kappy,
In that case, I'm not sure whether it's the motherboard's chip or the speakers. How can I tell if it's just the speakers that blew out? Reason I ask is because I can't put headphones through my computer anymore; the sound just doesn't work, and I don't know much about computer hardware but I'm assuming this is an internal problem with the computer, as opposed to the speakers. However, the speakers play but they've been clearly ruined, with the sound being very quiet and distorted at best, and occasionally the speakers will make weird popping noises for no reason. Thank you for your reply, Kappy, and I look forward to hearing back from you.

  • Skype can't detect sound card

Skype was working just fine previously when making a video call (could hear the other person well - no problems.) Then I stopped using the monitor stereo speakers and installed desktop speakers.
Wasn't happy with them and uninstalled them about a day or two later. When I tried to make a video call again (after choosing monitor speakers again under the pc control panel - sounds and audio devices, also tried to choose monitor stereo speakers in Skype but didn't see this option) - there was no sound - even on the Skype test.
So I tried "check settings" and saw under speaker - "can't detect your sound card". Under adjust speaker settings there's no speaker suggestions at all - it just says none.
I also cancelled the speaker setting on SoundMAX digital integrated audio under the control panel.
I have rebooted the system but still the same problem!

I'v sorted out the problem. Sorry for the inconvenience!

  • Skype can't detect sound card, issue with playback...

    Hello
I have just received my Razer kraken 7.1 headset and have installed razer synapse 2.0. I have set up my mic and speakers of the headset through the control panel, my playback is set as the razer kraken 7.1 earphone and the mic is set as the headset microphone through the recording tab. When I launch skype there is no sound produce through the application, however with previous headsets there has been, I have tried going on youtube to see if sound comes through the headset and it does. Previously I have been using a turtle beach z11 which used 3.5mm jacks in to the computer however this new headset is usb operated. When skype opens and I try to call someone it says problem with playback device meaning I can't call anyone at all. However when checking call quality it says everything is working fine even though it isn't.
So far I have tried re-installing skype and restarting my pc none of this has worked so far, I know this isn't likely a fault with the headset as it works with all other programmes I have tried.
I am using a custom built pc with
OS: WIN7 64 BIT Home Premium
    GPU: AMD HD7950
    CPU: i5-3550
    RAM: 8gb 1333mhz
    Motherboard: Asus p67 series
    Sound card: Onboard 7.1 audio
Any help with my problems would be much appreciated.
    -Thanks

@gsnell, Please setup your audio device directly in Skype and not only in the windows playback/record interface.
Also, please try to quit synapse 2.0 since it may interfere with Skype.
Also please try with the latest 6.13 version

if nothing helps, Can you please provide logs as described in this link https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA12321/how-do-i-create-log-files under Skype for Windows Desktop and attach it to your post?

  • USB sound card sound drop outs and glitches

Hi there, I have been using a Lexicon Omega USB sound card with my Macbook Pro unibody and have been experiencing a failure when running two programs that try to output sound.
e.g. iTunes will be constantly playing music and another program such as safari pings me when I have a Facebook chat message or if there is a sound when a file has finished copying or i try to play a youtube video at the same time or I play a track in spotify, the sound card freaks out and makes clipped distorted noises then stops outputting sound to the amp and seems to stop receiving a USB signal.
The curious thing is that after reconnecting the usb cable, all is fine again and both programs WILL play simultaneously, so it should be possible?
This is really starting to drive me a bit mad as I cant play music and chat online at the same time without the sound crashing.
I presume it has something to do with what program is assigned to the core audio driver and another program confuses it, like when running Logic Pro which seems to take over the whole sound card for its functions and won't share.
Perhaps there is something in OS X I could fix or change to get round this or perhaps its just the sound card not working properly and not the fault of OS X.
Would be grateful for any advice or if anyone else has this issue.
    Harvey

Be absolutely certain that all of your 3rd party software is fully compatible with Snow Leopard - visit the manufs. sites for updates & info until you're current, etc.

  • Sound Cuts Out During Playback-Sound Card/Audio Interface Necessary?-

I'm a voiceover artist with the following setup:
    Sennheiser MKH 416 P48 U3 Microphone
    Yamaha HS80M Reference Monitors
    Mackie Onyx-i 1220 Mixer
    Adobe Audition CS6
    Dell Inspiron 1720 laptop (Intel Core2 Duo, CPU T5750 @ 2GHz, 32-bit)
Until recently, I could hear anything I recorded or pre-recorded items with no issues.  However, now, as I listen to anything, the sound 'cuts out' (latency issues?).  The meters on Audition will still be moving, but I'll get no sound from my monitors.  I upgraded to Windows 7, hoping and thinking this would solve the issue, and that Audition would play nicely with Windows 7.  This 'solution' seemed to have helped, but ultimately, it did not resolve my issue.  At this point, I believe it's my sound card.  My studio quality setup seems to be too much for my consumer grade sound card.  Because my Mackie has an interface built into it, I did not believe that I needed an interface.  However, I'm beginning to question that.  So, that's part of my question.  Is an audio interface necessary for me even though I have one built into my Mackie?  If so, based on what I list for my system, does anyone have any recommendations for interfaces?  If I do not need an interface, I'd appreciate any suggestions or ideas as to what's causing the sound to 'cut out' and how to resolve it.  Any and all help, I thank you for it in advance!
    E

Finally!  I wrote a reply a few hours back but the fine folks at Adobe took the site down just before I hit send!  Lucky I saved it elsewhere because the "recovered post" was only the first couple of paragraphs.
    Anyhow, take 2.
Well, first off, your Mackie Onyx mixer has a firewire interface built in so it, in effect, becomes your sound card.  The one in your computer isn't involved in the recording/playback process at all (at least not unless you're trying to do something like monitor via the computer card rather than the mixer).  Therefore, buying another sound card/interface won't help at all.
Similarly, audio dropouts aren't a latency issue, at least not directly.  Latency is the delay in the audio as it does the round trip via you sound interface (mixer) and computer.  It's more of an issue for musicians trying to be beat accurate as they over dub tracks.  However, the latency controls could be affecting your drop out problem.  The latency control in Audition is effectively controlling the buffer size--and having a larger buffer (which increases latency) also gives you playback more protection against glitches when your computer gets busy doing something else.  So...the first thing to try is increasing the latency/buffer size on the Edit/Preferences/Audio Hardware menu.
Another thing to check is that you're using the latest drivers from Mackie--check their site and download/install the latest if there are some available.  If there's a choice, go for ASIO drivers rather than MME if there are some available.
Also, I mentioned your computer getting busy with other things--for serious sound work shut down everything else on your computer.  Pay special attention to networking, wifi, and anti virus software, all of which are usualy prioritised to grab processor cycles over your sound work.  Also make sure you shut down all system sounds.
Hope at least one of these suggestions works for you.

  • Sound card cutting out and clicking after 1.6 firm update in windows

I don't know whats going on... but after I ran the firmware update 1.6 on my MBP, my sound card went crazy on the windows partition. The card will put out sound for awhile and then it will turn off and make very annoying clicking noises. I boot to the Mac side and everything is fine. It really ***** because I am a DJ and the number one part of this computer I use intensely is the sound card.... Help! I am going to call apple tomorrow but I think they will not help kindly in windows even with an apple care...

I had experienced this issue on my late 2007 MacBook Pro.

Until this post, I had not heard of it on the new MacBook Pros.
I would guess that this issue has been caused by a driver conflict. As someone else had suggested, the Boot Camp drivers for the new MacBook Pros are in desperate need of an update.
Call Apple Support, and ask them to begin an investigation into this problem. Direct them to this thread. They will give you an investigation number that you can monitor.
Many of us have been asking Apple for updated drivers for Boot Camp. The more we call. The quicker Apple will resolve.
Other driver related issues for Boot Camp include the following link that I have noted.
