Skype, Headsets and Audio

From what my experience is, the MBP is designed to use that particular type of headset/mic which has the two 1/8" mini jacks, and not the USB type. What is your experience? Here is mine...I have a MBPro with OSX 10.5 Leopard and and running Skype 2.6.0.184. I went out and purchased two different kinds of headset/mic combos: (#1) One, an Altec/Lansing with a separate 1/8" mini jack for mic, and a separate 1/8" jack for audio. (#2) The other headset is a Logitech USB combo mic/headphone set. Long story short: #1 works, #2 goes back to the store. End of story. Anyone have any success with the USB style?? By the way, I understand how to use the Mac Sys Prefs for audio.

USB is by far the best way to go. Separate jacks won't work, you will be able to hear audio but won't be able to talk unless you use a device like the iMic in most cases.
Logitech has really disappointed all mac users since they dropped almost all support for Mac with their webcams and headsets.
I use a Sennheiser USB headset myself and im very pleased with it, no drivers needed, just plug and play, works in 10.4.x - 10.5.1 sofar without any issues.
I have the Sennheiser PC-135 http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/page/shop/flypage/product_id/6744
It's an old model, i got this one because of the good mac compatibility, not sure if their future newer models are just as compatible.

  • Skype connection and audio problems

    Hi everybody,
I successfully downloaded 2.5.0.85 Skype software for Mac.
Trying to connect to their echo123 robot to check audio settings was also successful but downloaded message was very jerky (about one word evry 10 words) and not understandable. Moreover application quitted unexpectedly after some 10 to 15 seconds. I do not use any special firewall, the standard included Apple in Share folder excepted. Could somebody help ?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    Welcome to  Discussions
I use Skype (same version) sometimes my sound cuts in & out, I am not sure if that is what you mean by......
but downloaded message was very jerky (about one word evry 10 words) and not understandable.
I presume you are using headphones, a must have.
Regarding the crashing, go to Home/~Library/Preferences folder & find the com.skype.skype.plist file & move it to the trash.
If the crashing doesn't stop, you may have better luck with Skype 2.6 Beta,
http://share.skype.com/sites/mac/. See their help pages on the web-site,
it is a Skype issue, and you may get more help there.
    Good luck,

  • Ipad skype video and audio capture

    Hello,
I have an IPad Air 64GB and am looking to use it to record skype conversations. Are there any apps out that can do this? I know you can use Quick Time when your on a mac.
    Thanks

My guess would be without editing the api itself, and opening up a separate rtmp connection, probally no.  However you can use a program such as JScrCap to capture the whole screen and stream it live to your fms.

  • Why does my friends on skype hearing my music when im using a iphone5 headset and using the headset mic on a macbook pro?

Hi! Im using a macbook Pro 17,5 and I´ll have one audio input and one mic input! But Im using only the audio input with my iphone 5 headset and using the mic from that headset!
Why does everyone else on my skype hearing me and what Im doing on my mac?
For example. I talking on skype with some friends and playing Counterstrike. They can hear me really good but they are hearing me shooting a target as well as they can hear me. WHYYYYY??
    Plz help me!

You should post in the Skype forums. However I would presume that Skype needs a WiFi network not a 3GS network to function.

  • Skype reverts to speaker after pc restart from Bluetooth headset and its mic.

I have set Skype for Windows to automatically switch to Bluetooth headset and its microphone when is on and when headset is off to switch back to speakers. But after pc restart it switches to speakers. What should I do?

Yeah this is the same problem I had. Just go and get a replacement.
Dont think too much about other solutions. Its apple's headache not ours.
But I enjoyed the 1 week testing I did on the first phone I got. For me with bluetooth paired phone it was exactly from the second call and if its wired headset that is connected, then from the third call you make, there wont be any audio (goes to the speaker). Clearly a software bug, but just confused why not all phones have this issue.

There is probably a red light on inside your headphone port, indicating that the analog/digital switch in there is stuck in the digital position. Insert a headphone plug and wigle it around, especially in the horizontal plane, as you insert and remove it several times. This will usually unstick the switch and restore normal operation. If it doesn't, the machine will need to be repaired.
This has been a fairly common problem, but in most cases it is easily cured as described above.

  • Should my iPhone 1 (iOS 3.1.3) with Bluetooth 2.0 (Handset HSP?) work with wireless earbuds with BT 4.0 and the Headset (and Handsfree, A2DP, AVRCP) protocol? They pair and connect; status bar looks good. But audio always comes out the speaker. Thx.

Should my iPhone 1 (iOS 3.1.3) with Bluetooth 2.0 (Handset HSP?) work with wireless earbuds with BT 4.0 and the Headset (and Handsfree, A2DP, AVRCP) protocol? They pair and connect as expected (with a PIN); status bar looks good and shows Bluetooth active, and I even see the iPhone displays the battery levels of the wireless earbuds. But audio always comes out the speaker. (If I plug in wired headphones into the headphone jack then audio comes into the wired headphones, as expected.) I have rebooted the iPhone; I have had it forget about the wireless earbuds, and repaired and reconnected; I have reset all network settings. Thx in advance.
PS: I understand that more recent versions of iOS have a way to choose where audio output goes (speaker, headphone jack, Bluetooth device). Does this older version of iOS? I could not find an option or setting.

I've noticed this lately as well, with my iPhone 4. I couldn't confidently pin it directly on any particular iOS update, but my iPhone used to automatically connect up via Bluetooth with my Prius's handsfree feature, and now it doesn't. I work with a CE-based device at my job, with Bluetooth capability, and I used to test out that feature by having it discover my iPhone. This no longer works either.
What I have found (not really a solution, but it does work and may be a clue for Apple) is that if I simply go to the Settings app then the General -> Bluetooth screen and let it sit there, it will pair right up with my car within a few seconds. Bluetooth is always on, and always says "Now Discoverable" at the bottom of the settings screen.

  • I have voxer, and my phone keeps saying when I am trying to hold and speak, that voxer cannot record audio without a microphone, please connect a headset and try again.

I have downloaded voxer on my phone, it was working yesterday and today, I put my phone on my docking station and used voxer a few times while it was on there.  When I took it off and tried to send a new message my phone keeps saying when I am trying to record a new message, Voxer can't record audio with out a microphone, please connect a headset and try again?
does anyone know how to change it back so it will work again?
    thanks for your help

Try resetting your phone by pressing and holding the Home button and the power button unti the silver apple appears. If that doesn't work, contact the developer of the app.

  • ALL flash audio not working with G930 headset unless audio jack plugged in once and activated

Problem: Inexplicably and sporadically, ALL flash audio is mute in FF when using a wireless G930 headset connected to USB dongle (physically or wireless), but everything plays fine in Chrome and Explorer. I'm here to tell you what worked for the sake of others, and to make the FF team aware of a problem worth their attention.
Statement: Everything is up to date. FF, extensions, Flash, Java, Windows. I uninstalled flash on FF and my machine and reinstalled on both. My headset audio device is correctly activated in WIndows Audio Devices - all other devices are deactivated.
My current solution: I learned from a prior FF issue involving YouTube videos that YT has something called DASH playback, requiring you to plug in an audio cable to your machine, or the video won't play (WTF right?). An extension called "YouTube Center" fixes this by allowing you to turn off DASH playback. After plugging in a set of earphones into my computer's audio jack, I activated the audio device on the machine, and got audio through the earphones and headset. I then disconnected the earphones, and disabled the audio jack. Audio now works fine on the headset, and I've rebooted the machine, turned the audio jack back on, rebooted firefox multiple times to make sure. Currently, things are fine, but I'm reluctant to plug anything back into the jack.
For some strange reason, FF seems to have trouble recognizing my G930 headset as a valid audio device, or that's my guess. The fact that everything is peachy in other browsers should narrow down the culprit.
Hopefully this helps someone else, and we can find out what the core bug is to make things right.
Ask any questions if you have them and I'll try to get back.

    Very nice work.

  • Skype hijacks complete audio and results in shutdo...

    hi there,
I hope you can help me with this rather anoying issue. I installed the newest skype version a couple of hours ago and made a call, and all seemed fine. When I tried to start watching a video the sound was on mute, also listening to online radio didn't work. Even though I tried all possible combinations and settings both on skype and on my system audio there seems to be no solution for this. However, when I try to call someone the ringing sound of skype starts and accordingly the other sounds work as well. Since I won't be able to bother all my contacts just to watch a film, i really hope you have a suggestion where I can keep skype on the system (windows xp, yes i know....)  Thanks a million

    Hi,
if you have recorded the whole band through microphones, the earlier versions are ambient sound pickup from the mics of the other tracks. This can even occur if a singer wears a very loud headphone which you can hear through the vocal microphone. Just make sure during your recording session that all instruments that should be recorded very precise - without ambient sound - are recorded separately in a dry recording booth.

  • CANT USE BLUETOOTH HEADSET AS AUDIO DEVICE

I just got a bluetooth headset today, paired it with my imac, went into teh sound settings, then selected it as my audio input and output device. was working fine all day then all of a sudden it stopped working and no matter what i do it will not show up in the sound setting to let me choose it as a audio device.
It does however show up in bluetooth prefences as connected/paired etc. what can i do to fix this? i am on 10.4.2 with all the latest updates and have the 20" imac.
    thanks

I am experiencing this problem also. Strangely, I had my headset working properly, with no problems at all. Then, for no reason, the headset stopped working. I switched to another bluetooth headset and the new one worked properly. I also used a third headset, but it seems that the system is not properly clearing information about each headset. Now none work at all.
I have deleted all from bluetooth preferences, repaired one. The pairing appears to work properly, but the headset never shows up in the Audio section of System Preferences and cannot be used with Skype. I am at my wits end. I have repaired preferences. Shut down and restarted. Reinstalled Skype. Trashed Skype preferences. You name it I have tried it. I cannot get any of my 3 bluetooth headsets working now.
    Please someone help.

  • USB Microphone headset and noise

    Hello there !
I've done a little research on these threads before coming here, but no luck, I found nothing…
Im the owner of a refurbished MBP Penryn 2,5Ghz and a Plantronics Audio 650 USB headset since october.
2 months ago (around this), I've begun to sometimes experience some constant parasite noise with my microphone (Skype chat, Garageband, QuickTime or Übercaster recording).
I though about a fan noise, or power noise… but it appears to be absolutely not predictable.
I have done some tests with temperature viewer and fan speed viewer… on some days after utilisation, I have this noise. The CPU can be at 55°c, GPU at 60/68°c (and some others).
The fans are constantly to 2000 rpm during these issues.
On other tests, like a morning I made my MBP warming, keeping these temperatures, but no noise.
Well, Im at this moment using it with iTunes playing, battery charging, USB mouse and headset connectd, FireWire 800 working, the "noise-temperatures" reached… and no noise with the microphone.
I contacted Plantronics, who asked me to make a crossed test, but I was not able to reproduce it on an Intel iMac or a Titanium G4…
Is there someone here who have some ideas about what is going on ?
I suspected the headset, the hardware, the 10.5.6 update… even my 4 Gb of RAM installed in November… or the dust in the colling access !
But I cant reach a constant parameter to solve this…
    Thanks in advance !

    OK, thanks for the reply.
I seem to recall that certain device types, like disk drives and audio devices, have a standardized USB interface.  That is, no device-specific driver is required (assuming that they design to the standard, of course).  I guess then what you're saying then is the iOS devices don't have that standard audio-device driver.  I guess that's a not-unreasonable choice on Apple's part.
I suppose another possibility might be somebody making a (small, light, preferably in-line) adaptor from USB audio to 8th-inch pin plug - essentially a very-small, very-simple USB-interfaced A/D-D/A).  I looked for such a thing on Amazon, and didn't see anything like that, but perhaps I didn't use the right keywords.  Then again, such a device would presumably need a battery, which would probably contradict the "small and light" criteria!  :-)

  • My SB Audigy 2 card can't use headset and musicamplifier at the same time

Hi, i just bought a SB Audigy 2 [D400] and i have downloaded drivers and programs. I run Windows XP SP2.
The soundcard works fine but it is very very annoying that i physically have to change the jack in the green=line out jack from headset to musicamplifier when i want to use my musicamplifier and change back the jack in the green=line out from musicamplifier to headset when i just want to use the headset/headphones .
In the shop they told my that i can connect both amplifier and headset at the same time and then with creative software control whether there is sound in the headset or in the amplifier. But i can't simple get it work.
I tried to use the green to the amplifier and the headset/speakers in the black (line out 2) and then with creative speaker settings softeware choose headphones but still the ampliefier receive the sound and no sound in the headphones. Why? In fact no matter what configuration i try the headphones doesn't work.
But if i change the jacks so headset is in the green line out then only headset is working and the amplifier doesn't work no matter i put it in sort=line out 2 jack or orange=line out 3 jack.
Can somebody here tell me if it is possible or not to connect both headset and external amplifier and control by software which to play? and how?
    please help, thx.
    Michael

If you can have an ASIO compatible music playing system, then it might be possible to have system like you wish when using Creative Audigy 2 card. Since ASIO bypasses Windows Audio System, you can use both 'drivers' (ASIO - WDM/MME/DS) side by side.
Say you want to play a game (using headset /w mic) and someone other like to listen music at the same time. With ASIO capable system you can output your music for example to "center L/R (stereo) channels" and same time output sounds from other source (using MME/DS/WDM drivers) to normal output channel (Front L/R). Only thing is, you need to set your speakersystem to 4 or 6 (depending which other channel you're using) (and for better 'balance' to adjust "angle" on THX console. You get the THX console by installing Audigy 2 Zs software).
    Try for example http://img332.imageshack.us/img332/463/djs9mo.jpg[/img] width="406" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us" >
    Another option:
Say you want to play music through external amplifier and play game online with your headset + microphone (eg. others but you listen the music, you play games)
    --> try free http://img332.imageshack.us/img332/4589/tbp7rz.jpg[/img] width="406" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us" >
If you use ASIO on BeatPort Player you can select L/R individually from the list(s). Same rules as described earlier.
= You can play from 2 different sources simultaoneusly (ASIO + WDM/MME/DS) to two different outputs without disturbance. The other (WDM/MME/DS) source is set 'automatically' output to (Audigy) "green" port, and the other (ASIO) to "black" or "orange" port (as set).

  • Video and audio crashes with communication error -8.

Hi, I sure could use some help please.
This is my problem, I can no longer use iChat on either of my computers which both have systems 10.4.10 and 10.4.11 in them. IChat version is 3.1.8 in both computers, my 2003 G4 eMac and my new Intel Core iMac.
I get a communication error -8 that comes as soon as I click on the video camera to connect to anyone.
I use no firewalls, my ISP server doesn't either and they block NO ports.
IChat used to work before I upgraded to system 10.4, in fact it even worked on dial up before I got high speed internet and it worked on high speed internet before the upgrade. One of my computers is brand spanking new, the iMac with system 10.4.10 in it.
I have automatic quicktime streaming and when I did try other setting, it made no difference.
I've called Apple and they had me remove plists from library preference folder but that made no difference either.
Both my cameras work for Skype and for yahoo. I'm bewildered. Can anyone help? I'd really like to have my iChat video and audio work again. (My audio gets the same error)
    Thank you,
    Martha

This post fails to say that the original computer was direct to the modem and now there is a router involved.
I also think I remember there was something else but my memory eludes me.
The info is in another thread.

  • Podcasting with skype, ichat and garage band at the same time

    Hi,
so here is my problem I have a podcast show and I record one of my hosts through i chat into garage band and the other is a phone guest through skype.....everything is going through an alesis mixer...the problem is my i chat host cannot hear the skype phone guest....what should I do??

Microphone into mixer. Output of computer into mixer. Skype and iChat routed to computer output. Skype, iChat and Garageband inputs all set to mixer output (either analogue output plugged into computer line in or using the USB connection). Turn monitoring in GB off.
Now everyone should be able to hear everyone, but the Skype and iChat contributors will also hear themselves coming back with a delay, which makes it very difficult to talk.
There is a way round this, but it involves having two separate audio-USB interfaces (which shouldn't be the same model) - they need to be able to handle both ways at the same time, and many don't. I assume that your Alesis is much the same as mine.
Microphone to mixer. Skype output and input to interface A. iChat output and input to interface B. Set GarageBand input to mixer main output as above.
Microphone channel : turn up sends to Aux A and B
Skype channel: turn up send to Aux B only
iChat channel: turn up send to Aux A only
Plug Aux A output to interface A
Plug Aux B output to interface B
You have now set up what is called 'clean feed' in the UK ('mix minus' in the USA). Skype should receive the microphone and iChat but not itself, iChat should receive the microphone and Skype but not itself. Everything should be heard by Garageband.
You may find some difficulty in getting this to work. The main sticking point is going to be that the interfaces have to work in both directions at the same time, and as I said, many don't.
Skype will handle conference calls and this would be a simpler solution!
