Skype How-To video ads

Help in banner ads. Seriously? I have been using skype since way before Microsoft owned it. Y'know, back when it was good and MS wasn't determined to kill it stone dead by trying to make it "trendy" and in the process accidentally making it unusable. (Hell I remember that ancient bug where you could steal being the host from someone. 06-07, good times.) I would go on a rant about how ugly and wasteful (of space) the new 7.0 UI is, but that's pointless as MS never listens to anyone with any amount of negative feedback. I kind of wish they would market the blinkers they're all wearing, would probably make the world a wonderful place to live. Anyway! Went off on kind of a tangent there. Like I said, I've been using skype longer than I can even remember. So now, the fact that the space at the top of my IM windows is being taken up with banner ads to beginner tutorial videos is their next master-stoke of crotch kickery. I have no need for these tips, and I run in split-window mode with each IM window at minimum size, so that space is at a premium... And right now it's being taken up by a banner ad that isn't even making anyone any **bleep** money. I don't need this help! It feels like because I block their actual ads their punishing me with patronization. xD  TL;DRDoes anyone have any idea how to turn the how-to tip ads off? (Ironic, I know.) I don't really hate that they exist (unlike normal ads,) because I'm sure they are helping some people... Just not me. I don't need them, they're making my Skype experience worse. (Much like every update since Microsoft... Other than group video, that one was good. Didn't even mind paying for it.) The weird thing is, they weren't there yesterday and no updates have taken place... They'll probably disappear of their own accord soon enough, but I thought I may as well ask you fine people anyway. <3~ P.S. Yes I have looked through options, yes ads are disabled. I even have Skype's ad server blocked in my hosts file. If there's a simple option somewhere that I've just missed, feel free to make me look like a fool. But posting here was my last resort, so I'm hoping I'm not just that stupid.

This is a feature I probably shouldn't advertise here, but you may want to take a look at this plugin: https://github.com/dlehn/Skype-Utility-Project It should be able to solve your problem. Other than buying Skype credit, I think there is no "built in" option to free the space taken up by the banner ads permanently.

I'm sure you have checked, but make sure your mute button on the keyboard is not on , also check that you haven't touched the space bar during a call as that mutes it.
Check your settings in Skype>Preferences, Audio/Video tab. Here's what mine look like:

How do I turn off 'additional plug-ins' pop-up reminder? When I'm surfing websites or Facebook, for example, I keep getting the little pop-up, that reduces my screen size, saying additional plug-ins are available to play all content. I don't want them installed! Audio and video ads are annoying. If I want it I'll click it.

  • Really Apple? OSX 10.8.5 disables built-in camera functionality with third party apps such as Skype and Gmail video chat. I do not have time machine on my 2013 MB Air. How can I get back to 10.8.4?

    Really Apple?
With the release OSX 10.8.5 Apple has once again showed its true colors, and continued its efforts to create a closed Apple system, which eliminates third party vendors, unless, one can only assume... they pay.
Included in this OSX update is the disabling of the built-in camera to work with third party applications such as Skype and Gmail video chat. No surprise the camera works just fine with Apple apps such as Facetime and Photobooth.
The answer I got on my call to AppleCare to ask for assistance in reinstalling 10.8.4, so that I may Skype again, was we can not do that. You can not go back unless you have a time machine bkup.
Can anyone help me get back to to 10.8.4 on my 2013 MB Air?
I do not have a time machine bkup as this computer is not used to store important documents.
    Thank you.

Don't panic. Skype simply needs to update its app.

  • How can I stop the nuisance video ads and add links being generatesd, since getting the latest Firefox update installed, I HATE them getting in the way?

Little video ads appear at random times on the lower right of my screen. Also, in some sites a few "key words" are being converted into hyperlinks to unwanted advertisers. In some instances, we also see this appearing on the East Arkansas Community "Campus Connect" site, promoting other online educational organizations that are in potential competition with our institution. This is unacceptable.

hello angrommet, this sounds like a problem caused by adware active on your pc. please go to ''firefox > addons > extensions'' & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and run a full scan of your system with the security software that you have in place and different other tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner].

  • Disable links to how-to videos

It seems microsoft has listened and allowed the complete removal of ads, at least on my version(6.21.0.104), but now have added these links to how-to videos that I can't get to go away. I have disabled targeted advertising and help and skype tips, but they keep coming back. It's really wasted space that I would like back. Is there any other known fix, or is downgrading the only option.

The reason is purely commercial. Permanent links to the store and the Genius Bar are two examples of how iTunes 8 pushes the offerings of the Music Store.
A third example is how they've taken away the Video Kind tab in the ID tag, which used to let us choose Movie, TV Show, or Music Video. Now video that we generate, edit, and encode ourselves ends up under Movies, and we can't move it. ITunes 8 is hostile to homemade content and only wants to work well with Music Store purchases. On my main machine, I'm sticking with 7.x as long as technically possible.

  • Video ads way too loud

Listening to my music at a reasonable volume and then all of a sudden a video ad will come blaring on, seemingly at least twice as loud as my actual music volume. Loud enough to ****ing literally hurt my ears. This needs to fixed immediately.
This latest update is just a mess. The lead developer and anyone who OK'd the update should be fired. The update should be rolled back until someone competent, and who also values user experience, is put in charge.

I've been having the same problem, ad volume was normal and the same volume(haven't updated spotify since maybe around halloween when I got my new computer) as my music, then a few days ago my spotift appeared to randomly crash then it automatically updated itself when I tried reopening it and ever since that auto update the ad volume has been pretty much twice the volume my music is at :/ Like i'll be listing to something trying to sleep, then some loud ad shows up and wakes me back up scaring me to death just about, or i'd be listening to music at night when people are sleeping then suddenly some loud voice or video ad or music ad pops up so loud it could probably be heard from outside my house and most likely anyone else in my house could hear it as well seeing how it was so loud I could feel it in the floor and my desk and clothing, that's how loud the ads are now when the ads before the update were the same volume as my music. It's so bad that I pretty much stopped using spotify until that problem gets fixed. Im scared to even use spotify anymore now because never know when some loud ad is going to attempt to blow my $200 speakers again or blow my headphones and make me deaf as well as giving me a heart attack in the process...
Imagine listening to music at a nice volume, then some random loud voice or random loud music on an ad shows up that's at least twice as loud as your music, pretty sure it would give anyone a heart attack. Not to mention that people can't exactly be having that happen when they live in a house with other people or live in an apartment, they'll get kicked out for noise complaints just because of an ad because you're listening to music at 2am while studying or getting ready for work or something then the ad pops up as loud as possible. If i've stopped using spotify because of this problem, im wondering how many others have picked the same option since there's other music sources like pandora and slacker that DON'T play ads louder than the music, I pretty much always listened to spotify(gaming, cooking, music to help me go to sleep, music while working on stuff or hanging out with friend or girlfriend or just sitting around relaxing and texting someone) up until that ad volume problem showed up, I tolerated it for a couple hours then got tired of rushing to mute my volume(usually while im in a game, I may add) or turn it down before I woke someone up or my speakers blew(because $200 doesn't exactly grow on trees so can't really afford to buy new speakers every time an ad pops up and blows my speakers, feel like i'd have to do like how Orange county choppers does with doors and have a storage room full of spare speakers instead of spare doors if these ads keep up with challanging me to race to see if I can mute or turn down the volume before my speakers blow). And if I remember correctly, it's apparently illegal to put ads higher than the program volume on tv, so not sure if same applies to radio and internet music streaming but seems like it should apply as well. NO ONE wants to have some loud ad blasting in their ears and blowing their speakers or headphones.
If goal is to see how many heart attacks you can cause and how many people you can annoy enough to quit using spotify and to get people in trouble with noise complaints with the ads, then you've done your job. Now, can you please make the ads the same volume as the music so me and everyone else can use spotify again?

  • How to videos will not open

First of all, sorry if this is in the wrong forum, a careful viewing of the forum list did not present any likely candidates.
The Problem: none of the how-to videos at http://www.skype.com/en/essentials/windows-desktop will play for me. I just get a blank box with a close icon on it (see attached). No errors, just blank and it comes up very quickly. Anyone know what kind of control this is that pops up? I cant seem to tell.
If I right click on the empty box, and click "inspect element" it looks like it is some kind of java script. But I have the latest java installed and enabled (java.com says its cool: version 8, update 45). I choose a random video, I right click and select properties and it just says html file "Skype essentials for Windows desktop - Your step-by-step guide to the basics" with this path "http://www.skype.com/en/essentials/windows-desktop/" (resulting in this URL: http://www.skype.com/en/essentials/windows-desktop/Skype essentials for Windows desktop - Your step-by-step guide to the basics).
I tried it on a couple of computers with the same results. All have windows 8.1 professional with latest updates and using IE 11. Tried compatibility mode or not and trusted sites or not and added http://www.skype.com to java trusted sites or not with no change.

I can watch the videos from that URL in IE, Chrome, or Firefox on all my machines.  You might have some common software or blocking installed inhibiting it's ability to play from the site.  There are quite a few videos so there isn't just one link.

  • ITunes Radio Video Ads annoying

My laptop just update to the new iTunes. The online radio plays minimized in the background. However, now all video ads pop up and takes front row center to show me the stupid ad. I am trying to type a paper and this thing takes over.
Anyone knows how to disable this? Else I will be downgrading and blocking iTunes form ever upgrading via Host file. However, I prefer not to do that since future iOS programs won't sync with old iTunes.
Is apple really making me choose between obtrusive ads vs their products? Cause if that is the case, I don't see the point in buying iOS devices if I will need the new iTunes that has this annoyance.
    <Edited By Host>

I have the same issue....over 25K songs so iMatch is disabled. I think I am finally at the point where I am going to drop match. No sense in paying for it if I get only get 10% of the benefits and 100% of the hassle.
Any tunes added since it maxed is not seen on other devices. Since it is maxed on my iMac I get iTunes radio ads.
Even though it says my iTunes Match is screwed, most of the content from iTunes Radio is from my personal library with only 1 in 10 songs being something I don't own.
It feels as if iTunes Match and Radio are for people with almost no personal music collection, or their entire collection was purchased from iTunes. Either way it falls short of the hopes I and many others had for it.
I would gladly pay a few bucks more to have iTunes Match work correctly. And Apple has had plenty of time to design, test and implement a solution for users with large collections, yet no solution has appeared. iTunes Radio, being so heavily dependent on my iTunes collection (based on the music it generates), seems to not be much of a bargin considering that I pay for it AND get ads.
Considering the iWorks update debaucle, Apple seems to be dissapointing a lot of people these days. While I still love my Apple hardware and OSX, I can't help but be greatly dissappointed in their lack of attention to detail and their recent all-hype approach to delivering on the software side. They have the money and resources to build extrodinary software, yet they seem to make an effort to deliver what most would consider great products from Microsoft, but sub-standard from Apple.

  • Facebook ads/popup video ads

My son has downloaded something on our Imac because everytime I log into facebook these video ads are playing, which this does not happen on my mac laptop with facebook.  How do I locate this adware, or whatever it is, and how do i remove it.  It's really annoying!!  Urgh....teenagers!!  lol

Are you logged on as your son or yourself when you login to Facebook?  Do both you and he remember your passwords so that we can just delete the cookies and relogin?

I have an iMac 23", 3.06 Intel Core 2 duo.  Whenever I try to play YouTube videos, the system crashes and I get a "Safari quit unexpectedly" message.
I know there are Apple vs YouTube issues, but the same thing happens when I try to play video ads from the Apple site.
The computer is 4 yrs old- this problem started a couple of months ago.  No major changes, just updated as available.
    Any suggestions....?

I don't have any Safari extensions that I know of.  I didn't install any anti-virus.
This is on the error message when it comes up.  I went to the WebProcess application in Time Machine and tried to restore it to one year ago, but it didn't fix the problem.  As I recall, this began about the time Apple and YouTube parted ways- whether that is coincidence or not...

Thanks for taking the time to look at this.  I really appreciate the effort.  I'm a amatuer at this, I'm afraid.

Could you capture your screen and post it. Have the layers panel open and any layers that are collapsed, expanded. We will need to see the entire screen, as some information in the tab is important as well.

  • How can I tell what video card and how much video memory does my iMac have?

How or where can I find out: which video card does my iMac have and how much video memory does it have? I've tried looking in System profiler, but I did not see it there. Thank you.

Once you open System Profiler there should be a line called "memory" which is the RAM (vs. hard drive size which is not what is called memory), e.g., Memory: 1.5 GB
For video click on the line Graphics/Displays and look at the chipset line, e.g., Chipset Model: GeForce2 TwinView
Kappy's instructions are handy for checking the original configuration of your computer, but that may have been changed at some time, especially if you bought it secondhand.
