Skype installed as external drive rather than application?

I realise that this is most likely something very basic but it remains beyond my abilities as someone not yet familiar with Macs. My wife installed Skype on our MacBook but it has appeared as an external drive - every time we turn the mac on Skype launches automatically. How can we switch this to a simple application that we can launch as and when we choose? Thanks for any help.

Start by opening Accounts preferences. Click on Login Items. Locate the Skype entry and delete it. Next check in the Applications folder for the Skype application. If it's not there then most likely you never installed it from the disc image download. Locate the .dmg file you downloaded with Skype then double-click on it to mount the disc image on the Desktop. If a window doesn't open automatically then double-click on the disk icon to open a Finder window. Drag the Skype application from that window to your Applications folder. Then unmount the disc image. You're done.

  • Backing up library to external drive rather than CD's??

Hi, does anyone know if you can perform the back up/incremental back up function in iTunes to an external hardrive (as opposed to a DVD or CD)?
I tend to back up everything on my computer to my 500G external drive these days instead of discs (more capacity, less messing around with multiple DVD's etc!). However itunes doesn't seem to give you that option, unless I've missed something obvious???
    Thanks, Caroline

Generally, that's the better way to do it but you can't use the iTunes utility. Use Windoze Explorer to simply drag the entire iTunes folder to the external drive.
For subsequent backups, be sure to trash the existing backup first. If you don't do that, you will be adding files to the existing backup rather than replacing them. If something was deliberately removed from the library by you (or automatically by iTunes), you want to ensure that it's also removed from the backup.

  • How can I store iPhoto files on an external hard drive rather than on the iMac drive

How can I store my iPhoto library on an external hard drive rather than the iMac drive to make my computer faster?

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • My itunes seems to be looking for my library on my computer C drive,  rather than my external drive ( originally set up to as default ).  How do I re-set itunes to look for my library on the external drive ?

Suddenly, after a year of good operation,  my itunes seems to be looking for my library on my computer C drive, rather than the external drive it had been set up to as default   How do I get it to search for the stored library on the external drive again ?

    Quit iTunes.
    On the external drive;
1 - Create new folder called iTunes (or whatever you want).
2 - Move your music folder into this.
3 - Go to the the C: drive iTunes folder.
4 - Copy the iTunes library.itl file into the iTunes folder on the external drive.
5 - Start iTunes holding the Shift key.
6 - Select Choose existing library and select the iTunes library.itl file you just copied to the external.

If it gets far enough to reject your serial number, it won't help to download it. It must have installed ok.
What is the message you get (DON'T tell us the serial number!!)?
Does it mention a "qualifying product" by any chance?

  • How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library

How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library?  I have several 128 GB SSD's that I want to use to copy/backup all my iPhoto photographs for a permanent archive due to stability...but my iPhoto library is larger than the drives (about 234 GB) so it would require two of the SSD's...how best to get the original photos onto the SSD's?  I'm running Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6...thx.

Terrence - Can you explain what you mean by data loss?  In the iPhoto Library?  Or on the copy?
Larry - In what way is each photo "degraded"?  Quality?  Isn't it simply making an an exact copy, in this case a jpeg, as would happen if I dragged and dropped a different file type?  Is there another type of degradation?
I am working on trying to create a correct backup as well (per your instructions) but I wanted to use this as a "put in a fireproof safe" archive on very small SSD's that would never have a mechanical hard drive problem (we've lost a couple over time so aren't real confident in their staying power)...I also recognize that I I won't have newer photos in this archive group but at least it would have 98% of our photos in another off-site location...at least that's the thought...
Thx for your input and look forward to more in your reply...

  • Back up to portable hard drive rather than discs - how?

Can i back up my itunes to my portable hard drive rather than disc as 'help' suggests? How do i do it?

Like CTJon suggests, just use Windows Explorer to copy the iTunes folder and all its subfolders over to your portable drive.
You can't do it using iTunes. iTunes only has the disk backup option.
For incremental changes, you can use SyncToy from Microsoft. It's free software and really easy to use. There is no way to make it automatic, though, so you need to remind yourself to do the regular backups.

Your iTunes library isn't deleted when you uninstall it, so uninstall iTunes without worrying about this

  • XP SP3 updater wrongly targets "F:" drive rather than "C:", won't install.

I have a new, Leopard based Intel Mac set up with Boot Camp and XP.
Both methods of upgrading to XP SP3 are failing. I have upgraded to the v2.1 drivers for Boot Camp, of course. When I try to install SP3 either from Microsoft Update or from a standalone installer, the installer reaches a point where it complains about a lack of space to perform the installation, but the drive letter it is complaining about it is "F:" drive, which of course is one of the several "unreadable" partitions left over by virtue of XP not understanding the "Mac side" of the computer existing. My XP installation has a perfectly good C: drive partition, and it's what I'm booting and running the installer from. Why isn't the XP SP3 installer targeting the right partition?

The workaround is a Windows registry thing.
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
    3. Check for a Key labelled "BootDir". Edit it if it exists, if not create one per the next steps. You may find the entry is already there with the value "F:\" rather than "C:\" - this is the bug.
    4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and click String Value.
    5. In the text box under the Name column, type BootDir and press ENTER.
    6. Right-click the name BootDir, and then click Modify.
    7. In the Edit String Value dialog box, type the drive letter for your system drive, and then click OK. For example, if your system drive is C:, type C:\.
    7. Close Registry Editor.
DO NOT REBOOT WINDOWS or this registry entry will default back to "F:\".
    8. Run the previously downloaded SP3 updater.

  • Is it possible to use bootcamp to install windows on a flash drive (rather than an HD partition)?

I would like to run windows on my Mac preferably from a flash drive, or an external drive. I don't want to install it locally because I don't have enough HD space. I've found a few sites and videos that show you how to do this from a PC (like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh-F6dcXmsE) but I don't have a PC and I'd like to know if it's possible to use bootcamp to accomplish this.
Thanks very much for any help! Would be greatly appreciated.

If you have Windows-to-Go, it can be installed on an external disk, otherwise Windows licensing restricts it. Bootcamp has additional checks to enforce such licensing.
You can always install it on an internal drive first and then put the drive in a USB enclosure.

  • Not enough space on PC for media backup for ios 5.0 upgrade. Can it be config to use external 1T drive, rather than C: drive?

We have iPhone 4 and 3GS, iTouch and Nano.
The PC has about 3GB on the C: drive available, and I have an external USB connected 1T drive which is just about empty.
Can backup / sync functions be changed to use the external drive?
i-device backups and media files have taken over much of my C: drive space.
The iTouch upgrade to ios 5 is stopped because the media would be lost due to insufficient C: drive space.  (Requires 3.5GB)

Move all of your media files to the external hard drive, then delete the information on your C: drive.  Take a look at this link for instructions.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364
