Skype name vs display name in chat

I have been in a group chat for a long time. There are several hundred members of the chat. I am not the administrator.
I have recently realized (as a result of some attribution problems relating to various messages on the chat) that Skype is mixing up Skype names and display names in the chat thread. With hundreds of members, this is more than annoying – it has already caused some friction.
In summary, a series of posts by some members show up with a mix of their Skype name and their display name. This can happen when their posts are only minutes apart. It does not happen with all members.
Does anyone have experience of this? Is there anything I or the administrator can do to fix it? I know I can set anyone's display name locally to whatever I like. I also know that adding them to my contact list might lock in the display name. But there are hundreds of members of this chat; I don't want them all in my contacts and I don't want to manually adjust them all!

Do you mind sharing a screenshot of where exactly you see this "(1)"? Please blur/remove any occurrence of private information on that screenshot. But that picture would tell a lot more about what we are dealing with here.

Skype Account contact list and skype name changed

Hi!
I have been actively using my skype account again lately and one time last week when I signed in, I just cannot. My username and password are correct. And so what I did was to reset my password. I was able to reset my password through my email and when I signed in to Skype, I found out that my skype account was "hacked", I think. My skype name, profile photo and contact list changed into somebody else's account.
I just want to ask what has happened to my account? Why did that happened? The username and contact list that appears to my account, I think, was leggit and not an act of hacking. Could it be possibly that our accounts switched?

Your report reads to me like your account was compromised (hacked). If you still have control of it, sign on to the account dashboard and change your account's registered e-mail address to something else, and then change the password.
Also, as a proactive measure, ensure your computer's software and patches are updated, and run your preferred anti-virus/malware/spyware program using the most recent virus signature files available.

Skype is aware of lingering problems with the website when contacting their customer service agents. How do I create a Skype Name in this new environme...

For a variety of reasons, I have created a new Microsoft Account. In attempting to set it up with Skype, I was never asked to create a Skype Name. This has created issues sining into Skype, as well as telling people how to Skype me. I do NOT want to give them my email address as my Skype contact. A Skype name is much more suited for this situation.
How do I create a Skype name that people can use to call me?
This beggs the question of why Loging into Skype and idnetification is co complicated. Associated with this one account there are the following methods of primary identification: Skype Name, Microsoft Account, Display Name, Skype Community Name, and there seems to be an additional display name for each Skype accont in the Community which begins with live: and then a modified form of the user's email address. That is A LOT to remember. I had a difficult time just logging in because it asks for my Skype name and the blank would not accept any of the aforementioned identifications. I had to get here by signing into Skype Desktop and then clicking a link to go through rather than signing in. The sign in would not accept my credentials.
Bottom line is all these issues would go away if I could figure out how to get a skype name.

Skype Name Changed (Yes! my Skype name. Not my Dis...

So i attempted to sign in with my original, as i believe, Skype name and password. They were both accurate. (Trust me. The ink was not smudged.) Sign in failed. Repeatedly. i asked for a reset of the password. Followed the procedure and reset my password. Sign in again failed. Repeatedly.
At this point i noticed that the Skpe Email reset was showing my account name but it was differrent by one character to my original, as i believe and had recorded, Skype name, i reset the password again and then using this new 'Skype name', with the altered character, signed in. Voilà! It worked.
Everything says you cannot change your Skype name. Display name, yes. Skype name, no. A new account is required if you want a new Skype name. So how come my Skype name has changed? [Since at least April 2013, (maybe even earlier).]
i would appreciate a Skype employee's response, thank you. Then i can go into the details by email.

Here's the deal: I have more than one apple ID. Actually many of us do. @ mac dot com, dot me dot com, over the past decade there have been lots o "Apple IDs" (as they're called).
So one was attached to my file syncing, another attached to my iTunes money. I still do not know how my wife's name got in there (maybe "family sharing with ios8 is trying to take over?), but I was able to fix it at least by logging into different IDs on different machines.

Using a Skype name

This is bizarre. Signed in and it said that my email address - that I used to sign in with - is used by another account!
I thought that the Skype name that we use would show up in the chat window. It doesn't!
Is there a way to change this, other than to create a new acount and use the Skype name that we want to appear as our name when we register?

There's no point in doing that. Just call "Skype-to-Skype". The call will be free.

Remove My Skype Name from Skype directory

I don't want to receive contact request from anyone who knows my name so I wanted to change my Skype Name and change my Display Name to stop people finding me with my full name on Skype.
But I read in this topic "https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA110/can-i-change-my-skype-name-or-display-name-in-skype-for-windo..." that It’s not possible to change my Skype Name. And If I want to have a different Skype Name, I will need to create a new account.
So I start looking for how to delete my present Skype account before creating a new one. And I followed all the instructions in this topic "https://support.skype.com/en/faq/FA142/can-i-delete-my-skype-account". Now I need to remove My Skype Name from the Skype directory. I tried to contact Skype Customer Service by Email but they're having some problems at the moment.

Skype does not permit account names to be changed once they are created. This way, no recycling of account names can occur. You can, however, change the name displayed. Here is how to do this:

Remove my Skype Name from the Skype directory

Hello, can you please help me. I want you (someone who does that) to remove my Skype Name from the Skype directory.
I removed all my personal information from my profile.
"If you want us to remove your Skype Name from the Skype directory, you need to contact our Skype Customer Service. It may take up to two weeks to remove your name from the directory."
I've read everything about this topic. So, please, can you just do that?

Removing Skype Name from Directory

Hi,
I would like to have my skype name removed from the skype directory. I will then create a new account with a more professional name. Any help on how to go about this would be greatly appreciated.

The final step is to contact Skype Customer Service, as is mentioned above, to file your request. Here is a link to the instruction on how to contact Skype Customer Service via their secure portal: Contact Customer Service
You will need to proceed through each step, one at a time. Sign on to the Skype website as requested. Choose the subject and topic which most closely matches the item you need assistance with. Then, continue past Step 2 of the instruction where several articles from the FAQ library will appear for you to review, and proceed to Step 3, Continue Support Request (the blue "button" appears at the lower right corner of the website page). You may also skip through Step 4 where you will be referred back here to the Community; no need to do this as the Community is where you started. Skype does not permit account names to be changed once they are created. Your only choice is to change the name as it is displayed, or to start over with a new account. Remember, you can transfer your contacts from your old account to your new account.

Lost access to skype name

Hi, until recently I was using a skype name that I can no longer access. When I request a new passwork, I see two other skype names, but not the one I was using. Is there a way to recover the password for the other skype name, or to find which email address I registered it to? The other names do not have my contacts, so I'd rather use the old one!

using another Skype account, open the Add a Contact window. Then in the "email address" field, enter the email address that you think you registered in the account in question. Once the correct email address is entered, the Skype username of the desired account should be displayed in the search result. But if the account has not been use for more than 6 months, it may no longer appear in search results. you can try to contact customer service to know what your possible options are;

both Skype display name and Skype username are fixed to be visible to public. There is no option yet to hide them or make them visible to certain users only.
