Skype on Windows 8 Sucks

Am I the only person who thinks that the new Skype on Windows 8 is really hard to use. Why oh why can I not simply import all of my contacts I have previously imported. Trying to do anything is really hard.
It is a great example of style over substance.

I agree. It does leave A LOT to be desired. It is a handicapped mess. I cannot listen to voice mail, set it up or even usually answer a call in time with this modern UI mess. I have a number through Skype, and once the 12 month term is up, I am done with Skype and on to something hopefully more useful. Thanks, Microsoft. Nice product. Frankly, the whole Windows 8 experience has left much to be desired.

  • Big problems with Skype on Windows 8

Skype and Windows 8 suck.  I have to sign in on one microsoft account, then when I go to download skype it comes up another email address, when trying to change it sends me in the same circle.  I will not be using skype on windows 8 if I can help it.  It used to be so simple and now they make it so complicated.  I have wasted hours on this.
Post and reply transferred to Windows 8 message board to create new discussion topic.
    Subject/title amended accordingly.

I am in a similar situation.   I have a new laptop which came with Win8 - ditto W8 sux -  I went to apps and there were 23 apps waiting to download and install - things that I never asked for are there - Bing, Kindle, shopping, several weather apps, etc.  I click download and nothing completes downloading.  The error says I cannot download apps because Win firewall is not running.  my ISP (Comcast) provides Norton to customers.  I stopped Norton and I was unable to start Win FW.  I deleted Norton completely and still get the same message and still unable to start Win FW.  Like the other user, I have also spent many hours trying to resolve this.  I had Lenovo tech support try to help but they were also unable to fix the problem   I called Lenovo Tech Support last Sunday and this time I was told software support is not included in the warranty!  I checked the warranty and he was right - software is excluded.  And we all know how hard it is to get support from Microsoft.  So I had to go back to my backup laptop to run skype because I need Skype for business but that's an unacceptble solution...    If I could download Skype without using the apps feature (i.e., download in a browser) I could probably get it to work but I keep being brought back to the app download section of Win 8....  i have a new computer only partly functional.  I let the 90 day time frame for "Return for any reason" during 90 days followng the purchase run out so I get no help from Microsoft, Lenovo or Costco!  Is there anything else I should try?    Or do I just give up downloading additional software??
Subject/title amended to match new conversation subject/title.

  • It's irritating to use skype on Window 8.0

i have installed the new skype download from the internet.
each time i open skype, i always end up in skype from window 8.0
How can i remove skype from window 8.0, it always open full screen, i cannot do others work.
    Thanks
    sent from website ban hang

Skype is just too intrusive. I prefer not to use software that requires a confirmation when you close it, or won't stop trying to sell you things, or sits in memory when you don't want it to and sucks down resources, bandwidth and cpu cycles. It is quite a bit like a pet that won't stop urinating on your carpet.

  • Submit: Great Skype for Windows Phone ideas

We have just launched a new Windows Phone idea board to let you all share and exchange your ideas on how to improve and develop Skype for Windows Phone.
Before you start sharing your ideas, here are some guidelines to help you get started:
    Idea Submission Guidelines
Search before posting. Do a quick search and make sure you are not submitting a duplicate. If the idea already exists show your support by giving kudos to the original idea rather than watering down the potential impact across multiple submissions.
Draft your idea. Be as clear as possible, tell us what your idea is, how it would benefit users and why you think we should consider it. That will not only help us to better understand what you want, but we may even be able to solve your problem more quickly another way. Please avoid text speak and keep the idea short and to the point. Ideas are available within a limited number of topic sections of the community as they are not discussion threads.
Currently you can choose one of the following topic labels for your ideas:
    Video Messaging
We‘ve just launched Video Messaging on Windows Phone so you can now send video messages to family and friends, even when they’re not online. Let us know what you think of Video Messaging on Windows Phone and any ideas you have for how we can make it better.
    Phone Integration
Tell us how you would like Skype to be integrated with Windows Phone. Would things be easier if Skype was better integrated with the People Hub? Integrated into the messaging app? Or in the dial pad?
    Contacts
How can we make it easier for you to find friends and family on Skype and add them as a contact? What are your thoughts on how contacts are managed on Skype for Windows Phone? Do you have any recommended improvements?
    Calling
Tell us how you would like Skype to be integrated with Windows Phone. Would things be easier if Skype was better integrated with the People Hub? Integrated into the messaging app? Or in the dial pad?
    Instant Messaging
Video calling is one of Skype’s most popular features. What do/don’t you like about Video calling on Skype for Windows Phone and do you have any ideas for how we can make video calling even better?
    Some things to include:
    Start with a clear title
    add appropriate label(s)
    list features and benefits
Review the ideas of others. Look at other ideas to see what your fellow community members are requesting and feel free to exchange on them in the comments section. While we take into account the numbers of kudos an idea receives, we also consider the amount and quality of member feedback when making our decisions.
Add value. Vote for those items that you like and agree with by giving the idea a kudos. It's really a significant way to recognize someone's effort. We are using votes as a barometer to find out more about what our contributor community thinks is important, so we can factor this into our prioritization process.
Submit a new idea. Adding an idea is just like posting a message on a board. To create an idea, click on the “New Idea” button, located on the left side of the page content tab, and in the left column under the actions heading click “create an idea”. Be sure to enter a clear title and description of your idea so others can decide how they would like to vote. Remember, the more complete your thought, the more likely it is to get noticed! You can use simple HTML, format the text, or add links or images. You can also preview your idea and check your spelling before you post the idea.
Do not be discouraged. Sometimes what seems simple may not be so simple to build. Some ideas take longer than others, and some ideas will not be possible within the scope of what we want to accomplish in the next year or so.
Be respectful. Comply with the Community Guidelines and Skype etiquette.
Disclaimer: Skype may or may not use your comments, ideas, or suggestions. Skype reserves the right to use for any purpose including commercial purposes, comments, ideas, suggestions, code, products or services (“Content”) that are posted on this community without any obligation to compensate the individual or entity that provided the Content. What is the Idea Board all about?
Idea Board is a new part of the Skype Community, where members can share their ideas about existing products and services. Anyone in the community can see and vote on the ideas you post.
We encourage you to give kudos and comment on submitted ideas as we are more likely to take the top kudoed and most discussed ones into consideration.
How do I navigate the Ideas Board?
Finding your way around the ideas board is a pretty straightforward task, here are some of the things you will see to help you get around.
    •  New Ideas – The most recent ideas.
    •  Hot Ideas – The most popular ideas right now.
    •  Top Ideas – The most kudoed ideas.
    The sidebar widgets
In the sidebar you'll find more ways to sort the ideas board, see new and popular ideas and the top rated contributors to the idea board. It's also really easy to view only the ideas with certain status', for instance if you only want to see ideas that are “Accepted”.
How to check if an idea exists already?
Use the search function filtering by the ideas board – or click here (direct link to search function)
    What do the votes/kudos mean?
Just as you can give kudos in the community boards and blogs, you can vote for ideas you like on the Idea Board. Ideas with high vote totals are more likely to be recognized and accepted by the teams at Skype who develop our products and services. You can also leave comments on ideas, but remember to be kind!
What do the different idea statuses mean?
We strive to review submitted ideas on a biweekly/monthly cycle. Each idea will go through a life cycle that will be assigned statuses at each milestone. The statuses are explained here:
New Idea - Sparkly new idea, submitted by you, and ready to be vetted by the community.
Comments Requested - Items set as Comments Requested will be open to the community for feedback and votes.
Under consideration - Idea has been forwarded to appropriate business team who is determining feasibility.
More information needed - More information is needed before our Product Management team can take this forward, please review the comments left by the team.
Duplicate - Ideas in this status have already been submitted in some form or another. We will link these items over to the other idea so you can review the status or track the progress there.
Already exists - This is available in the product.
Future possibility - Idea is a good one but not something we can include in a near-term product or software release.
Accepted - Idea has been accepted and has been taken forward for implementation, check back soon for updates.
Not right now - We like the idea but just not for right now, we will revisit it in the future.
Implemented - You asked for it, we did it!
My idea has been accepted. How long will it take to be implemented?
Sadly, we will not be able to provide dates for the implementation of any accepted ideas within the community due to the number of factors involved. Please be patient and let us make sure it is completely ready before we make it available.
How will I know if an idea has been implemented?
You can track the status of your ideas as your ideas are sent to the people here at Skype who can make them happen and you will see the status of your idea is updated. We will be telling you if the idea is something we are working on now or would like to do in the future, or if it’s something that is not feasible for us at this time. To ensure you don’t miss any updates select “Subscribe” from the “Idea Options” menu when viewing your idea.
What ideas have been implemented so far?
You can check "Accepted and Implemented ideas" topic here.
Can I edit or delete my ideas comments?
No, you can't. Be sure to check your spelling and preview your comment before you post it; you can't edit a comment once it's posted.
Who and how often moderates/ manages the ideas board?
The community team is monitoring the board on the daily basis and product managers will come in on a monthly basis to update statuses of the ideas and post their comments.
If Skype decides not to pursue my idea, will you tell me why?
We do not always provide the reasons for our decisions regarding ideas submitted for review but will strive to provide an explanation where possible.
I have an idea to improve the Windows Phone software itself?
Microsoft has set up a Windows Phone Feature Suggestion Box for exactly that purpose. Share your idea here: http://windowsphone.uservoice.com
If I am not comfortable submitting my idea over the Internet, is there another way I can do so?
    No.

I would really appreciate if you guys work on the feature “ custom backgrounds for chat notifications”.If users will be able to choose any image of their liking in the custom background feature if would add value. Currently some of the chat messengers provide this facility to the users which makes interesting to the users while improving user friendliness and satisfaction. Options that would include areTake a photoChoose from albumsSearch from webDeleteThat appears to be a reasonably robust selection. In search, a user can use a built in engine to pull up images based on search and then select it as it their choice. Once you chose an image, it will be asked to confirm and ‘set’ as the universal chat window for all contacts.

You guys who have posted obviously have not read the first sentence of the long OP, let alone the whole thing.
    This is the wrong place.

If you are asking questions about skype issues this thread is really the wrong place lol. Getting an answer to yoru question will require a little effort on your part.
    First go here:
    https://support.skype.com/en/
Read through that page, if you want to narrow it down and search, use the search.
Since the search targets all skype forums, include which OS you are on.
However since you all are probably on windows, click this link and use search or browse topics.
Do not post a new thread without using search. Look for forum topics marked as [Solved]. Doing otherwise spams the forum and is globally known as inappropriate and poor forum etiquette.

How can I upgrade my Skype in windows 7

Windows Firewall won't block installations. You can use group policy, check out Using Software Restriction Policies to Protect Against Unauthorized Software
As well, as a security best practice users who should not be allowed to install applications should not be members of the Power Users or Administrators local machine groups. As members only of the Users local machine group they do not have permission to

  • Deleting messages in skype for windows 8

Took me an hour to figure out how to make a post... Skype needs to get a bit more user friendly.
Anyways, I am using the latest skype for windows 8, but I cannot seem to remove messages off my pc. I've tried right clicking while inside the conversation (brings up remove contact, remove notificiations, etc), I've tried clicking on the three dots at the bottom, and I've tried right clicking on the recent conversation window itself. Nothing seems to be working. And apparently nobody seems to be having this problem except for me because I haven't seen anything for windows eight. Anyways, help would be much appreciated.

  • Translations in Skype for Windows

Skype for Windows desktop currently supports more than 38 translations for the user interface. You can easily switch between these built-in language via the menu item "Tools - Change Language". Should you have accidentially switched to a language you do not understand: It's the second menu from the right in the Skype window and the first item within that menu. In case your language is set to a language with right-to-left direction like Arabic or Hebrew it's the second menu from the left:
    Using a custom language file
But there's more than just the built-in translations: Thanks to the outstanding contributions of Skype users all across the world there are additional translations available. Skype Community user  is coordinating these efforts in an online project at Transifex and you can finr more information on that in the topic "Language files for non-official Skype languages available". Have a look there and check if your language is already available or you might be able to contribute by translating a few lines of text.

Well we are already currently looking up the account language based on the registration country. And that's obviously leading to some wrong matches. Previously the language lookup was based purely on the language of the Skype client you first signed up for Skype with. Different, but not much better. We are reworking this for a more consistent "one language per account" approach, but we need to ensure that all touchpoints - from clients to account pages to emails - are using and setting this language profile information consistently. And this is unfortunately taking some time.
I hope with that additional information you can understand the difficulty of such a "simple change".

I have two problems here which started after I got installed Windows 8.1:
    1) I seem to appearing online when I´m closing the Skype window (by dragging it down).
    2) I can´t logout from Skype for Windows 8.1 app
I already unlinked my Microsoft account from Skype account, but that doesn´t help at all.
Can we get this bug fixed and logging out option back it was like in Windows 8?
Pretty please, this situation is getting really annoying and I don´t know what to do :c
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The proposed solution DOES NOT work if you are logged into your computer with microsoft account. In this case Skype also automatically logs you in with microsoft account and you  are provided with two options only: either to link (again) your (just unlinked) skype account to microsoft or to register a new skype account.
In both cases you will NOT have the option to sign out. The only option to sign out from Skype is if you are not using your microsoft account to log into the PC (use a local account). If you are logged into the pc with microsoft account, there is NO WAY to turn skype off unless you UNINSTALL the windows 8 version (use the desktop one). As long as the Metro version is installed on your PC, it will be running. Always. 24x7. It will also be runing in background, even if you have "Allow this app to run in backround" set to Off, even if your lid is closed and your computer is in sleep mode (skype will wake it up every now and then

  • Automatically hide Skype in Windows 7 taskbar on s...

Is there a way to make the Skype taskbar field automatically hide when Skype starts up? It did it on XP, now it's not doing it on 7 and I see no option for it. I do know how to make it always show in the notification and close it manually from the taskbar so that is not the problem, I just dislike having to close it manually every time.

Unfortunately regardless of the settings you still have to close the initial main form manually.  I was wondering if it could be done so I made a C# application to do it.  It just needs to launch after Skype executes.  So if you have it run at startup then you would want "HideSkype" to be the last program running.  Alternatively you can use the provided Skype.cmd file to launch it as well at any time. It's set to a 10 second delay to allow Skype enough time to sign-in automatically to a default account.
You will probably need .NET Framework 4.0 or above installed or you computer for it to work.  This has been tested many times on my Windows 7 machine.  You will need to fill out the skypeid.txt file with your skypeid for it to work properly.  Be aware this does not close/minimize all of Skype's windows.   It is targeted to solely close the main Skype window.  However, if Skype is set to default view vs. compact view it will close that complete window which includes that active chat session encased in the same window.
If I find out later I have to correct an error, any new version can be downloaded from here:
    http://www.pcdust.com/Downloads/Skype/HideSkype.zip
Feel free to scan it with your AntiVirus, mine says it's clean, as it should be.

     Hi all,

Sorry, that isn't a Firefox support issue. Try AOL support for help with that.

  • Skype for Modern Windows and Skype for Windows Desktop on a tablet???

Hi All. I am a newby here so please be patient I have a 6 month old Toshiba Encore that comes installed with "Skype for Modern Windows". When I opened Skype today I received an advice/advert saying that this service will cease July 7 and I should uninstall and update to "Skype for Windows Desktop". News flash.... I have a tablet and it is telling me to install a Desktop version? Is this correct, dispite that my device is a (Windows 8.1) OS tablet, am I still required to make the conversion? Any advice most appreciated.

And just in case your next question is "Why". I am just a user like you so no inside knowledge but from what I have read it is partly down to the "Modern" version actually being based on "Old" tech, so it couldn't intergrate with the cloud based future of Skype and partly down to it isn't probably worth fixing (It had a lot of issues that I could see). Unfortunatly for some it is a bit inconvenient that it's being killed off before Windows 10 is released. The one thing I liked about the "Modern" version was the intergration with for example your contacts in the people app, but if you uninstall (Or when it gets killed off in a couple of weeks) you lose that intergration. I know you still have it in Outlook with intergration for the desktop version but to be honest Outlook isn't great on a seven inch tablet either. From my understanding when 10 is finally here and Skype catches up there will be full Skype intergration with your contacts again (Although I could be wrong and that is for the WP). Anyway, I for one would love MS to consider the universal app idea based on the WP version for smaller or all tablets. Maybe someone from Skype will reply?

  • Skype for Windows non-federated contacts

    Hi,
I have an Office 365 Small Business account. I was using Skype to connect to non-federated Lync contacts. With Skype for Business, I can't connect to these contacts. Was the ability for Lync to connect to Skype contacts removed?
Do I need both the Skype and Skype for Business programs on my PC? Can I run both simultaneously? It isn't clear from what I've read, I'd like to have one client open and see both personal and business (Lync) contacts.

Not sure where you're getting your data, Entegy, but I have found Skype to work quite well, especially considering the cost.  It's less buggy than a lot of expensive software.
I've been collaborating using Skype for some 7 or 8 years now, often in tandem with screen-sharing software, and sometimes on calls that last all day with folks on Macs and PCs alike, even iPads.  I've transferred files with it from bytes to gigabytes
    without error.
Skype is not without a few little glitches but I count it amongst the top productivity applications I've ever used.  It has always "just worked" for me.  Perhaps it has to do with how tightly you run your ship when it comes to keeping
    your computer well-maintained.
Why would anyone consider installing Skype for Windows 8 while the Windows desktop
version is still available.  What could a person possibly hope to gain by trying to use the Metro/Modern side of Windows?
I just installed the Skype Windows desktop version 6.3.59.105 on my Windows 8 test system and it works just fine.
