Skype over AIM for PC buddy?

I have a buddy that has Windows XP and I can't get him set up so I can Video chat with him while I use iChat. AIM seems to be having all kinds of issues. Should I consider setting him up with Skype? How would I see him in my buddy list?

Get the Windows end to set up as per these instructions:

Yes, that is correct. The alternative is to quit all applications prior to logging out. Lion will then have a chance to remove the saved states.

AIM for Macs

Has anyone had trouble accessing AIM during the day in the last week? Last week, I woke my Mac from sleep and it tried to connect to AIM. The best term that I can use is that the connection was stuttering. I couldn't cancel and finally had to force quit. This happened two days in a row. I tried to reconnect, only to be told "The host has refused this connection. Please try again later". I tried AOL, but their tech support is dismal. I was routed to an FAQ page and that's it. I did report it to AOL, but I was told I won't get a reply. It seems to work at night, so is this just a case of too many people trying to use the system during the day? This is my first computer, so I am very new to all this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. SteveSD

actually i had this exact problem as well, I think it was a couple of days ago, I usually leave AIM on over night and then I came back to my computer and i signed off and when I tried to sign back on it kept refusing connection, as well as iChat, I thought maybe it was my connection but I ran Azureus, Camino, among others and my connection was great.. Didn't think much of it because I was able to connect later on the day but I think AIM had some sort of issue or something, which is unheard of and I've used AIM for like 6 years.

Mouse over solution for jdk1.0

hi all,
I am interested in making the equivalent of a mouse over solution for a java applet.
Basically I'll have approximately 100 Rectangle objects representing images on the applet.
When the person moves the mouse over these 100 rectangle objects, i'll use contains() method to determine if the mouse is over the object in question.
If true, the image will be changed to represent the mouse over event .
I thought for a msecond about looping through all the rectangle objects each time the mouse moves. but that seemed impractical since the mouse can move pretty quickly.
It seemed to me the best option was to extend the Rectangle object and put an event listener on it . so that the Rectangle object can be triggered at the same time or individually as needed in response to the mousemove event .
Does anyone have any thoughts about that ?
does anyone know how I would possible implement something like that for java 1.0

I am using this class in conjunction with a java applet (targetted to 1.0-1.1 ).
I'm passing a reference of the applet in to create this ListeningRectangle like this

and when the person moves the moves the mouse of the applet rapidly, only the appropriate ListeningRectangle object would respond.

Orange UK skype over wifi

Is anyone using Skype on an Orange UK iphone.
I'm just trying to establish whether i would be able to use Skype over wifi before purchasing one.
Read some reports that it’s barred and the sales reps in the Orange store would only confirm that Skype is not supported.

I have an iPhone 4 on Orange UK, and Skype works perfectly over wifi, which is hardly surprising as anything over wifi is not carrier-dependent. However, using Skype over 3G is another story. Orange's 3G bandwidth is so low at times, sometimes as slow as dial-up, that you can't hear what each other are saying on a Skype call. Chatting over 3G usually works fine though, given the much lower bandwidth requirement.

There are no events for it but you can use TextField.getCharIndexAtPoint() to determine the character where the mouse is over, and from there you can work out the word where the mouse is over.

Why did AIM for Ichat suddenly return an error?

I was using AIM for iChat earlier this morning and everything was working fine. Then suddenly, without warning, it logs out of every iChat account and returns the error: "An internal error occured that disconnected you from all iChat services. To resume iChat, log in again to your instant messaging account." I can log into my bonjour and jabber account, but as soon as I try to connect to AIM, it brings them all offline. I went to AIM.com and signed in and have been using the web client since, but apparently this has happened to about half of my friends on iChat. Why would this be and what can I do to fix it?

Now and then the AIM Servers have a blip and many people seems to get kicked Off Line.
I have server accounts/AIM IDs and keep some using SSL and the api.oscar.aol.com server on port 443 and some using the login.oscar.aol.com server on port 5190 without SSL.
Usually it only effects one group of my logins and not all of them.
It can of course be a server local to you that is having issues.

These "Share" files are accessed and used by the Create Disc app.
Create Disc is buried in the FCP X package.
Applications>FCP X>Show Package Contents>Contents>Plugins>Compressor>Compressor Kit.bundle>Show Package Contents>Embedded Apps>Create Disc
I'm wondering if having the Compressor Application on a Mac makes a difference to having just FCP X on a Mac and the use of the Sharing feature.

We are currently using polycom equipments over ISDN links for video conferencing, however, we intend to switch to our EIGRP E1 lines for that. all our sites are currently using 2811 routers to route both data and voip traffic. How do I provision the network so that I can use my E1 lines for video over ip, How should I design it?
Besides, How do i provide video over ip service to my mobile users who vpn into my network.

first, on provisioning your network for video over ip, make sure you can implement the QoS required to provide a clear, unchoppy video stream.
your design could look something like the following:
polycom >> network >> router >> E1 >> router >> network >> user
(very basic description, you may require more detail depeding on your needs)
also, for video over ip to your vpn users, you might be able to use something like cisco IPTV or the likes. (depending on the type of video you want to provide your users)

Yes, Skype can make video calls over 3G. You do NOT need to jailbreak your phone. I believe the previous poster thought you were asking about FaceTime which does not work over 3G.

You can have up to 10 Online Numbers on a single Skype account. So you could purchase numbers for the UK and US, and you would receive those calls on your Skype account. You'd still need Skype Credit or a subscription if you want to call telephones in those countries, or anywhere else, as Online Numbers do not give you any privileges for calling telephones - except that you can use certain Online Numbers as Caller ID when calling telephones.
For your example, numbers from both the US and UK can be used as Caller ID when calling telephones from Skype. You can choose to use one of these numbers as your "default" Caller ID number, and there is an option where you can use a specific number for calls to the country that number is in. This means you could set the US number as your default Caller ID, but the telephones you call in the UK could see your UK number, not the US number. Or vice versa - use the UK number as your default Caller ID number, but callers in the US would see your US number.
I have 4 Online Numbers - in the US and UK like you are interested in, along with Australia and Mexico. These are great tools to have callers avoid international call charges. Good luck!

Write permission over nfs for transmission files

I have a strange problem and I hope you could help me.
Context :
I have a server with :
transmission-daemon to remotely download torrent
pyload to remotely download ddl
nfs server to provide write access over lan for linux clients
samba server to provide write access over lan for windows clients
And of course, a client wich connect to nfs share to manage files .
Problem :
nfs clients have write permission over files created by pyload and basic users of servers but not on transmission files.
otherwise, samba or local basic user have write access on all files (even transmission)
Configuration :
On the server, I have a storage mounted in /mnt/data binded to /srv/nfs4/.
Transmission save files with mask 022 in directory :
/mnt/data/downloads/
Pyload with mask 022 in :
/mnt/data/downloads/ddl/
Nfs give access to /srv/nfs4 with wirte permission :
/srv/nfs4/ 192.168.100.0/24(rw,no_subtree_check)
Infos :
With I know and I tested, I can tell you :
I have 770 (and not 700) permissions on /mnt/data for local users on servers
Permission files should not be the cause. nfs and smbd are owned by root so logically, both of them can write.
Smb clients can write with every permissions (777,770,700) on files
Nfs clients seems have permission of "other". No write with 700 and 770. But write access with 777
pyload files are owned by pyload:pyload
transmission files are owned by transmission:transmission
basic users files are owned by [the_user]:users
So the problem exists only for transmission (not pyload) owned files from nfs client (not samba) and files are the same permissions .. I don't understand.
I will try with more verbose nfs server but I take every idea

The problem could be related to Mavericks permission problems. You can try the Bridge fix:
Open Finder > (go) Computer > Macintosh HD (for me) > Users > Click once on the Home icon (main admin) > Get Info >
click on lock and authorise bottom right > click on cog wheel drop down > click on 'Apply to enclosed items' > OK
