Skype Questions

I've seen lot's of people pushing Skype for Mac to PC video chats. Is there any concensus to if this is the best option? I have done Mac to PC using iChat on my end and things worked fine for one person I chatted with, but not for another. If I do Skype, does it do full-screen on either end? One other interesting thing...I did an audio chat from my Mac using iChat to a PC in Norway. I didn't think that was supposed to be possible.

SE G-Dog
I use Skype as a stand-by for chatting to my son (a PC user) in case our usual iChat/Trillian connection fails to open.
Skype gives you full-screen (much better than the AIM postage stamp) and works reliably in our experience.

  • Multitasking and Skype question

I am very happy that the Skype app now supports multitasking. However, there is one thing about Apple's implementation of multitasking that confuses me. My understanding is that the OS can arbitrarily decide to terminate a background app to free up resources.
So, my question is, if you are waiting for a call on Skype, how can you be sure that Skype is actually running in the background? My understanding is that in iOS there is no way to figure out what tasks are running in the background (double clicking the home button gives you a list of both recently used and tasks that are active as background tasks).
Do you just have to cross your fingers and hope that you are not running any memory intensive tasks that may cause Skype to automatically be terminated?
    Does anyone know?
    Thanks!

After you reboot your iPhone, no user apps are running (e.g. Skype), and thus no user apps have registered for any of the kernel services. You'll need to restart the user apps you're interested in having running, i.e. Skype. Normally you shouldn't have to reboot your iPhone, unless upgrading the OS.
When an app registers itself for a background service, it also registers with the kernel to be able to be "woken up" exactly where it left off. (The latter is available as a separate API, and is used by game apps.) Yes, it is automatically started, from where it left off, or as the user app callback indicates, when the background kernel service wakes it up. (User apps in the task bar are suspended and NOT executing on the run queue of the kernel.)
A runaway kernel service would be detected when you see CPU Idle usage at 0% and CPU System usage at 70-80% with the rest in Nice and User CPU usage.
Of course any software has bugs. This is why we (iPhone owners) occasionally see battery drainage. I suggest getting A+ System Monitor, a free app, and monitoring your CPU usage and Load (1/5/15 minute number of processes running average). The app also runs at the same time you have the task bar open (double-press the Home button). A CPU Idle usage above 80% is excellent. Average I've observed is about 90%.

  • Skype question help

I don't know if this is in the right section but I hope someone can help me.
My girlfriend is usually set as "away" in skype. Lately when she has been using her iPad, her skype status changes from "online" to "away" every 10 minutes or so, even when she doesn't open the skype app. I read that this is normal. But last night she appeared as online and never went to "away", which made me realize that she must be using it with someone. She has rarely used skype with anyone but me before, but last night she stayed online from 10pm to 4am, then it went to "away". Yes I was watching it because I was starting to panic that she was talking to another guy...
So my question is, can there be any other reason that her skype stayed online for 6 hours? Whether she uses it on her phone, laptop or iPad, is it possible that it can stay online even though she isn't using it. Or was she online talking to someone until 4am in the morning?

    Hi,
Initially, Skype Premium offers group video calling.
Also, you can include calls to one country from the list to be included to your purchase, unfortunately, only landlines are included for Australia.
Also, the new Skype promotion (http://www.skype.com/intl/en/offers/skype-with-love/?intcmp=ch1-SkypeLove-main) includes Unlimited World subscription, which, unfortunately, does not cover autralian mobile numbers, only landlines.
You can see the list of subscriptions for Australia here: http://www.skype.com/intl/en/prices/pay-monthly/#AU Please make sure to select the Landlines and Mobiles tab to see the subscriptions that cover calls to mobiles.

  • Using blue yeti microphone with skype question

    Hi,
I just bought a blue yeti mic to use with skype. The other person can hear me fine
but I cant hear him. All tests checked out fine on both ends. Then I saw the headphone jack on the bottom of the yeti mic. Question: do I have to have headphones on and plugged into the yeti headphone jack in order to hear someone, or is there a way to use the yeti and hear the other party without using headphones?
    Thanks for any replies!

I briefly googled your issue and came up with this: http://the-gadgeteer.com/2010/08/11/blue_yeti_mic/
It may be worth a read, as it sounds like you may need headphones unless you're willing to mess around with your computer's audio functions.

  • IPad 1 Skype question

I have an iPad (first gen). I'm trying to use video call on Skype. I've downloaded the latest version of Skype. I can see the other person but they can't see me? I'm not sure how to turn on my cam? Can anyone help?

Your iPad 1 does not have a built-in camera. You can receive voice and video but only send voice.

  • Skype question- want to know what set up to use

Bottom Line is My Company wants to know how
I can make calls to different area codes but let the receiver see them as a local number where they live.  I will mostly being calling out.  Trying to find out what package or best way to go to accomplish this.  My company greeting is the same for all area codes so I don't think I need different account for different numbers.
What is needed to accomplish this?
My PC doesn't have a mic.  Do I need one?
Do I have to call through the computer like a phone?
Can All Incoming calls be set to forward to my Landline?
Is the process going to be that I need a mic to talk to them using the computer by choosing the area code number to call from the list.
How is it possible to use your phone to call out using different numbers?
I read something about verifying a company.  Doesn't seem very user friendly, maybe it would be once you start, but very frustrating that you can't actually speak to someone on the phone.
I have been reading up but it seems like I can find answers but not in reference to my whole scenario..
If you use a mic can you work on the computer and talk at the same time?
Thanks So much, sorry I don't get it.

The only information I can give you is that given at the bottom of this page:

  • Built-in iSight not working with Skype

Hi, I have an iMac Intel Core with Built-in iSight, and ever since I've upgraded to Snow Leopard OS, my Skype does not recognize my webcam- when I select the "Built-in iSight" option, it says it is in use by another applications, and when I select the "Built-in iSight (leopard)" option, it's just a green screen.
I've tried reinstalling, updating, and calling Apple. My friend uses Skype on Snow Leopard with a MacBook Pro 13'' and his works fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,

For any iSight trouble, start with Apple's http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
If your iSight problem occurs in more than one app and more than one user account, the reset suggested there often restores proper function of inbuilt iSight.
However, if after carefully following all the suggestions in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article, your built-in iSight still does not work, and if it does not show as a USB device in your Mac's System Profiler, yours is most likely a hardware problem. In that case, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
If Skype is your only problem app, you can get help for Skype specific questions here:
      http://www.skype.com/help/guides/
Skype even has its own dedicated forum for help from Skype users: http://forum.skype.com/
For any Skype questions or problems, you will probably get faster and better help from the Skype users or Skype Tech Support. Search or post in the appropriate Skype Support area.
If you still cannot find what you need, check https://support.skype.com/search_first/
    before contacting Tech Support: https://support.skype.com/support_selection
Of course we will be happy to try to help with Apple questions here in Discussions.

  • Isight photobooth and skype

    Hi,
ever since I got the new version of skype, photobooth won't recognize the built in isight camera. It simply shows a 'no camera' icon in the middle of the screen (photobooth app). However I have found that whenever I quit skype and then restard photobooth or simply start photobooth without having skype running there aren't any problems.
Hope this hasn't previously been discussed however i didn't find anything through the search (both here and via google..)
    Thanks in advance

Hi EZ Jim and thank you for the reply!
    You are most welcome, MUCaviator!
And thanks for the Helpful points!
I do realize that only one application may use isight at a time. However while skype may be open it isn't using it (no videochat or anything on and the light next to the isight camera isn't on). With the old version of skype this didn't cause any problems. Is it possible that skype simply reserves the camera for it's own use, therefore not letting other applications use it even though skype isn't using it itself?
    (1) Because everything worked until you changed Skype, I agree that the problem is with Skype.
Unfortunately, I do not know the answer to your Skype question.
    (2) Unless you get the answer you need here, I suggest you try Skype help.
As you know, Skype is a third-party (non-Apple) products. The best answers for your Skype-specific question should come from Skype:
      https://support.skype.com/
Skype provides comprehensive Help including FAQs, step-by-step instructions, and a searchable knowledge-base. Additionally, Skype hosts dedicated "Forums" about their products. If the users who post there have not already answered your question, they will likely be able to quickly help you.
If all else fails, you can follow the "Get more help" link to directly contact the Skype developer's technical support. They should best be able to tell you how to use their product with your system.
    (3) If your time is valuable, you should immediately seek help from the Skype users who may have shared your trouble and already found a solution. However, if you want to try other ideas before exploring Skype Support, you can reinstall software.
      (a) If you have not already applied the 10.5.8 Combo Update
using the following method, you can do so now:
      • Backup your Mac and turn off Time Machine
      • Disconnect peripherals and restart Mac
      • Use Disk Utility to repair permissions
      • Download and install
        http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
      • Repair permissions again immediately following the restart that finishes the update.
      • Test Skype. Reconnect needed peripherals and test again.
(• Turn Time Machine on again when you are satisfied that the update worked.)
      (b) If you haven't downloaded the new Skype again and reinstalled it, you can do so now.
I suggest that you restart Mac and repair permissions before the download.
Because I do not share your problem, I cannot test whether either of these reinstalls can solve anything. However, although they may do nothing to help you, neither can do any harm, and neither costs anything but a bit of time.

The notification pops up in the upper right-hand corner covering the browser tabs I have in use. If I could either close it ("Reply" is the only option) or move the notification to pop up somewhere else on my screen, that would be ideal.

This is an OS X question, not a Skype question. Have a look at this thread for more info on how to deal with notifications:

  • Webcam for iMac

    Hello,
I'd like to buy an external webcan to use with Skype on my 3 year old iMac.
iSight seems to have been withdrawn ?
Is there a new Mac webcam out anytime soon ?
Or can somebody please recommend a good one for about £70.
    Thank you.
    Ken in UK.

    Hello Ken,
I do not use Skype, but Skype Help offers comprehensive support to answer your Skype questions if you do not get the answer you need here.
If you have a Mac compatible Firewire equipped DV camcorder, you can use it.
If you want a USB cam, although other USB cams will likely work, Skype offers several for use with their app linked at this page. All of them cost less than £70.
As explained on this Skype Help page,
Most PC-compatible webcams should work with Skype, however some older models may not work. You should ensure that you always have the latest drivers for your hardware to ensure that the camera will work.
Moreover, Skype's minimum system requirements for Mac show you must be using Mac OS X v10.3.9 Panther or later. Your posted System Info shows Mac OS X (10.3.x), so you need to update to use Skype if your system is currently at 10.3.8 or older.
Additionally, at 10.3.9, you will need iChatUSBCam and additional driver software. Consider the "Known Working Configurations" section of the iChatISBCam camera guide for recommendations unless the seller gives you specific instructions to make his camera work on your system.
From my look, at least two cams appear in both Skype and iChatUSBCam's lists of compatible webcams:
    Logitech QuickCam Chat
    Logitech QuickCam for Notebooks
Both of them require iChatUSBCam and the macam driver to work with your Panther (10.3.9) equipped Mac. With 10.3.9, iChatUSBCam, and macam driver software, either should work for you.

  • Skype to go ++ (Well it is a question that ties up...

    Hello there!
Greetings! I have been a skype user for over half a decade now (Feb 2005 ),
I have some questions, and hope some of you can help me. Let me begin by explaining
    my situation.
I plan to have the following services:
    1. Unlimited US & Canada.
    2. US incoming number.
    3. Unlimited India.
    Unpaid:
    4. 9 Skype to Go numbers + 1 Universal Call and Transfer old fashion number
    5. 4 registered phones
    Question 1:
I understand that I am limited by the fair usage policy -
    http://www.skype.com/intl/en/legal/terms/fair_usage/
I know that it is pretty old (~2009), and does not include details on India.
    The policy states: 10,000 min/month , max 360 min/day
But the Tricky part is this : "If your subscription includes more than one country,
then this is the total amount of minutes allowed per month on your account, and is
not a separate limit for each country."
    Does this mean:
    1. US+Canada and India : 10,000 min/month , max 360 min/day
    or
    2. US+Canada = 10,000 min/month , max 360 min/day and India = 10,000 min/month , max 360 min/day.
Here US+Canada is a multiple country sub and the cap is on both of them put together.
Which of my interpretations is correct?
    Question 2:
I understand that Skype expects these plans to be used by a single individual.
I am not sure if this can be loosely interpreted as a single family. I am starting my
family now, and obviously I am interested in seeing if my spouse can use my subscription.
So that brings us to the second part of the Questions:
    1. Can both my spouse and I use use my account to make calls, provided we stay under the limits?
This might include, occasionally, calling from two registered phones through skype-to-go to two International numbers
(Canada + India) or long distance US simultaneously. I think it is reasonable to expect that if we together keep
the calls to under 6 hrs/day and 10000 min/month and the 50 unique number limit, we should be considered as respecting the skype TAC.
    Is this a valid interpretation?
    2. Is there a restriction on the area-codes of the phone numbers being registered (managed phones for
pin-less skype to go)? We come from two different area codes, and would like to keep it that way.
Should the answers to the above questions be favorable, a perfect system would be the Connect-me adapter at home
serving as the landline, with our office and mobile phones serving as extensions to our skype subscriptions.
    Thanks and looking forward!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hi LonNW1, Thanks much for the response. I see that you are staff on the site, probably a staff at Skype too? Anyway, I am guessing in your response,
    >> 1. Hence, if you have 10K mins for the US/CA plan, and 10K mins for the India plan.
The if is misplaced, and it should read "Hence, you have 10K min...."
    That sounds good.
I think due to the length of my question, one of the details got lost, so let me repeat it here,
If my spouse and I were to accidentally call two different numbers using our STG setup simultaneously, i.e.. I initialize a call using STG to say STGN01 which calls Ind01 and my
spouse initializes a call to STGN05 which Calls Ind04, will skype see that as a breach of contract? I.e.. Does skype place restrictions only on minutes or does it place restrictions on number of simultaneous calls?
I know much of the wording in the TAC is to prevent people from using these "flexible" plans toward running commercial calling services, and users are expected to follow the honor system - only single person (personal) use. I am afraid any amount of coordination can still leave place for unexpected calls using STG at the same time, and I wouldn't want to be penalized for that.
    Thanks!
    Rajesh

I just receive a message from 'skype security urgent', I checked the posts and found that this is a regular occurrence that skype can't do much about.

    Hi,
IChat uses better Video Compression than Skype does.
On a top flight Mac you can send a 640 X 480 pixel frame up to 30 frames a sec.
    Skype can't match this.
iChat in Video is Peer to Peer. (you can actually Log out of the Buddy list)
Skype seems to borrow something from everyone's bandwidth to make connections.
What do you mean by Business account Tracking ?
iChat Adds (or can add) the First Name, Last Name of your Buddies and create an Address Book Entry
Whether you mark those cards connected with a  company is up to you.
(I have heard of issues with earlier version of iChat and the Address Book that "saw" the Company Name as the part of the Name and linking several Screen Names to the one name
Audio on a Mac using Skype tend to be the same as the streaming needs are less.
However you have to rely on any PCs audio abilities from PCs which may not be to the same standard.
Mac to PCs in iChat and AIM can be difficult though.  (It should work but it rarely as simple as Plug and go)
Skype may suit your needs better on ocassions.
