Skype to Go NWT Canada

Hi, I live in the Northwest Territories in Canada.  I'm trying to set up Skype to Go numbers for my contacts, but it is not available in the drop down box list for the provinces.  Am I out of luck for being able to use this service?  Thanks.

Isn't that silly? It is a free app, and I have

Please Apple, make skype available in itunes Store Canada

This has been covered here and in the iPhone forums multiple times already and has nothing to do with Apple. Skype says ""There are some patent-licensing issues which prevent us from offering it (in Canada)."

  • Skype-in Canada Feedback

Moderators please do not mark this topic as "Accepted Solution" until there are Skyp-in Numbers available in Canada.  This is a Feedback thread so that Skype can see what people think about us not having Skyp-in in Canada.
For myself I have cancelled my subscription of unlimited calling in Canada and US which I have had for 4 years as I do not see the point in calling out when people can't call in.  Especially since there are so many other viable options such as "e-Phone" (Free), "Fongo" (Free) and many others some with a minimal fee.
Here is a copy of the Feedback message I left for Skype after I cancelled my subscription:
Just wanted to let someone know.  I have cancelled my Skype unlimited subscription due to the fact that you still do not have any Skype-in ability for Canada.  YOu have made many excuses over the years such as CRTC problems etc...  The fact is that I now have at least 3 other apps with free calling on my iPhone with Canadian phone numbers so if they can do it you are out of viable excuses as far as I am concerned.  Without a Skype-in Phone number my Skype subscription was not very useful.  Hopefully enough other people will follow suit till you see the benefit in serving Canadians as you serve Americans and other countries.  Unfortunately there are so many other viable options available now that I am not sure you could win me back even if you did suddenly get Skyp-in numbers for Canada.  At least not at the rates you are charging.
Again Moderators (or whomever does that) Do not mark this topic as "resolved" or "Accepted Solution" etc...  The only way this is "resolved" is if we get Skype-in in Canada.  The only "Accepted Solution" is if we get Skype-In in Canada.
Until then this is meant to be an ongoing discussion topic.
    Thank you.
    Carl

I'm disappointed that Skype has wasted my time in getting half way through an install for me to learn there is no Skype in Canada?  Canada is one of the highest connected countries in the world. Disappointed and surprised shame on you Skype for not doing your homework.

    Hello,
    1. Legal requirements imposed by the CRTC prevent Canadian Skype Numbers being offered. This may assist:  http://community.skype.com/t5/Skype-Number/Canada-and-other-countries-Online-Number-alternative/m-p/...
    2. Participation in the Skype Number program requires local telecom carriers to guarantee a supply of available numbers. At present the Thai carriers are unable to meet that requirement.

  • Is it legal to have a USA Skype nr, but living in ...

Dear Skype Community, I live in Canada, but would like to get a Skype number. Since Canada is not supported I was thinking about getting a US Skype number. My question: is this legal or not? I have never lived in the US but I would like to get a Skype number so that my friends and family can call me.
Thanks for your help in advance.

Yes it is legal and call charges from around the world to call the USA & Canada are usually the same, so it shouldn't make too much difference to people calling you from abroad.

  • OnLine number in Canada - please support DID with ...

    Hi,
I am a long time Skype user and for the last 6 years, all my long distance calls went to Skype. I am as many users willing to get a Skype In number in Canada, I have one in the US for Business, but I need a local one.
I have a North American subscription too, it works well.
While the Skype In / Canada issue is somewhere in limbo, could Skype help us?
I can get a DID number in Canada (a DID number is a virtual number you can re-route to either another land/cell number, with per min charges, or VOIP provider, or even Skype) and can be found as low as $5/month.
I did such a setup (local DID number, rerouted to Skype account, $5 setup fee, $5 monthly fee) and it works fine on my tests.
But then I got an email from Skype, stating: "Here's a quick reminder that Skype's subscriptions are for individual use only and cannot be used with multi-user devices such as PBXs - as stated in our Fair Use Policy. Calls made to landlines or mobiles through multi-user devices will be charged at our standard call rates.". OK, I have a Canadian number, it routes through Skype then it costs me connection fee plus per min fee and ignores my subscription... Worthless then.
The other option for me are multiple, i.e. I can go to MagicJack and get a Canadian local number. But if I do, I have a redundant North American free calling plan, and I will terminate one. Skype, you'll loose a customer. And once I start moving I'll just will try to consolidate as much as I can to the new provider I'll select. Skype looses.
I am not trying to abuse your system, I just want a Canadian local number. Let us use / do support DID numbers in Canada with subscriptions until you get the Canadian Skype In fixed.
Please do allow for now on the use of DID numbers in Canada with subscriptions. I don't mind that you throttle it, let's say 3000 minutes max per month through the DID line. But please let us use subscriptions on that.
If I have to go through the pain of rethinking my entire VOIP setup, you loose a customer &  above 200$ / year. Help me stay with you.

`Yes, I too would like an answer that is actually plausible considering all the light you have shed in your previous statements.
Isn't it time that Canada reaps some of it's investments in service to it's people.
I would greatly use and appreciate a number as well.
    Signed: Still waiting...

  • No audio on Skype on my Kindle Fire HD 8.9"

When participating in a Skype video call, I am not receiving any audio on my KFHD.  My audio works fine in all other programs.  Actually, I can just verily hear the audio... kind of like having your sound come through your headphones without putting your headphones on (or in) your ears.
I had Amazon Tech Support troubleshoot the problem with me and they were dumbfounded, just am I!  So, they referred me to the Skype website for assistance.
    Any suggestions?  Thanks!!

Same problem with original Kindle Fire. Worked great, then update - now no incoming audio. Actually there may be audio as I get feedback when next to the called device. Guess only dogs can hear my Skype on Kindle now! Very, Very disappointed.
I called Amazon Customer Service and after an hour of trying to restore an older version of Skype, they told me the only thing left to do was a Kindle Factory Reset, which would make it like it came from the factory. Any data or anything I had downloaded would be GONE, so I would have to back up all pictures, emails, contacts, etc first.  All my Apps would have to be re-downloaded. They could not guarantee that this would even fix the problem. I decided it was too drastic a measure.  Its  abummer because my Kindle has 4G LTE and I have an unlimited Skype U.S and Canada calling subscription.   I use Skype instead of having an expensive cell phone contract or a land line.

  • Get an online number in Canada?

    Hi,
I want to get an on-line number to use in remote northern Canadian communities. The "Get an on-line number" option in Skype does not list Canada as a country in which you can get an on-line number. What do I do to get one?  Thanks  Northsandy

    Hello,
Unfortunately Skype cannot offer the Online # facility in Canada unless and until the relevant Canadian authorities issue the required licenses.

  • Cant use skype with airport extreme

i am exploring the idea of using skype for calls to canada from my iphone and eliminating my land line. i subscribed to the service and am having difficulty with connecting via wifi at home over airport extreme. Getting a connection seems to be hit or miss. i was connected a couple of times. i read in the skype support pages that airport is a closed network and will not support a skype connection. i found information about opening file sharing and modifying some port access. before i start playing around with that, i thought somebody out there has figured this out.

    GG wrote:

I don't know where you read that, but I'd question the source. The term "closed network" in this context is a non-sequitur.
Skype works fine with AirPort, even the older 802.11g version. It requires no special configuration. I haven't used it with an iPhone, but Skype worked with an iPod Touch (no mic though ) and runs fine even on my ancient G3 iMac. I'd speculate your internet connection might be too slow for reliable voice communication, but it is also possible the wireless connection to your iPhone may be a limiting factor.
What kind of service do you have?

  • FreeTalk Skype vs Windows Skype

Began using Skype with Skype number and US/Canada subscription last week on my Windows 7 computer. So far am very happy with everything about it. FreeTalk1200 arrived yesterday, easy installation, seems to work great, except for a noticable lag or echo when connected to a mobile phone. Problem: the two systems seem completely unaware of each other. Example: incoming calls ring on both wired FreeTalk phone and on computer speakers; if I answer the handset, the Windows Skype goes offline or hangs up and it then shows the event as a missed call.
How can I make these systems work together so I could, for example, answer the wired phone and then switch to the Windows Skype, and maybe even convert it to a video call? Outlook contacts were so easy to add to my Windows Skype contacts; how can I get them to appear in my FreeTalk contacts as well? For that matter, how do I add a non-Skype/non-Outlook number to FreeTalk?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The FreeTalk device and any other Skype client works exactly as they are designed to and yet still remain independent of one another.  If you answer with one client the call will be missed by the other.  When your account  is called they all ring by default.  Converting from one device to another would require a transfer, transferring calls isn't supported in any current version of Skype so it's not possible.  The Freetalk device supports speedials so you can log into the web interface and assign speed dial numbers (i.e. *001, *002) to Skype names.  Speedial is a legacy feature of Skype and was discontinued some time ago.  The Freetalk uses that legacy feature, that feature is not supported by Microsoft account names, only legacy Skype names.    Contacts can be added in the FreeTalk web interface in the same manner that speed dials are added.  If you add contacts on your desktop they should sync on the FreeTalk device when it is rebooted.  If they don't on your device, you would have to force reload the device and after the reload the contacts would be updated.  I can't vouch for mobile phone syncng since some of the contacts that are added on the phone don't always sync to Skype.  The process I go about added a lot of phone/Skype contacts is to add them on the desktop, log out, then reboot the FreeTalk and see if the contacts appear in the web interface.  If they don't, I reload the box and that resolves the issue.
