  • How to stop annoying Skype update requests???

I do not have time to read what new Skype update is about, and I do not want to risk my privacy by installing frequent Skype updates without knowing what this updates changes.
But - Skype annoyingly insists on updates, showing update reminders every day!!! It is annoying. And no "Skip updates" button.
How to switch off those annoying update requests?

  • Is there any way to turn off the Skype update mess...

Hello, I am using the Skype 6.21 version on Windows 7, for now I do not want to update to the newer version (mostly due to not liking the interface).
My problem is every time I turn on Skype, the updater message pops up (sometimes several times, once on startup, once on login etc). I've been reading up on some solutions here however none have worked for me : / Anyone know how to get rid of this annoying message?
Here is what I've tried so far:
Disabling auto-updates in the program itself
Disabling Skype Updater in the Services
Putting skype.com and msn.com as blocked sites in the Firewall (all that this did was disable the home page feed o.O something I did not want)
Deleting the installer file from temp files

Zhuinden created a thread on how to downgrade, make it stick, and turn off the update messages. You can find it here:

Of course, this should have been an option provided in the first place, but at least we have a workaround for now.

  • Satellite R630-14J - after Skype update web cam has disappeared

Update to Skype 6.6. the Webcam disappeared. not visible in device Manager. multiple Downloads of web cam Drivers don't execute. checked bios. Rebooted machine multiple times.
What to do to install web cam Software again?

    Hi
To be honest I cannot understand why webcam device disappears from device manager list after skype update.
I mean even if there would be a software problem (compatibility issues), the webcam should be listed in device manager even as an unknown device.
However, by default, certain devices are not shown in the list. To include hidden devices in Device Manager display, click View and select Show Hidden Devices.
However, I assume you are using Win 7 system.
    > multiple downloads of webcam drivers don't execute
On Toshiba EU driver page you can find the webcam software.
Maybe new Skype version damage something in registry. Would recommend uninstalling the Skype firstly. Download and install the repair tool like CCleaner. Clean registry and reboot the notebook. Now try to install the webcam software once again. Reboot the unit and check if you can use the webcam using installed webcam too.

  • Skype "updates" every time I open it

    Hi.
Every time I open Skype for the first time that day, it says there's an update and gives me the option to update when Skype is closed or skip that update. I usually choose the former, but the next time I open Skype it asks me again (unless it's on the same day). My current version is 6.19 (442). The version doesn't change when Skype "updates".
What can I do to get rid of the notifications?
    Thanks in advance.

Please,  run the DirectX diagnostics tool. Go to Windows Start  and in the Run box type dxdiag.exe and press the OK button. This will start the DirectX diagnostics program. Run this diagnostics and save the results to a file. Please, attach this file to your post. Be aware that you will have to zip this file before attaching it here.

  • Skype update available in Windows Store

There is a Skype update available in Windows Store now. I have decided to not update it yet, I have automatic updates disabled. I suspect this update contains the "July 7 time bomb" so I will wait for reviews first. I have also made backup of WindowsApps folder where current Skype version 3.1.0.1007 resides.
It is sad we have to "fight" with Microsoft to try to keep the Skype application work

Same here. I wonder if Windows RT users have received the update.

  • How to turn off the skype update notifications?

Anybody knows hot to stop the annoying skype update notifications?
There is no way I will do any upgrades, since skype has burned me in the past, so it would be nice to find out how to stop those...
    Thanks

The Updater service does checks (and automatic updates) in the background.  Disabling automatic updates in Tools -> Options stops this service, but does not disable it.  You can disable the service via Start -> Run -> services.msc and finding the Skype Updater service.
You may also notice that everytime you start Skype there still remains a pop-up dialog box prompting you to install an update.  This is because Skype had already downloaded a new version in the background and was waiting for you to install.  This happened before you disabled the automatic updates and disabled the service.
To resolve go to Start -> Run -> c:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local\Temp and look for SkypeSetup.exe.  Delete this file.  Exit Skype and re-launch it to verify this fixed the upgrade notifications.
I am still using Skype 6.9 due to the recent addition of ads.  This process helps make sure I don't get upgraded unintentionally.

  • Skype update gave me a virus

Hello, a Skype update was available and i put it off for a few days, prolly like 2 or 3, and then finally installed it. A few hours later my Norton antivirus popped up saying an intrusion was blocked, few hours later, again.  I checked what programs had been installed/updated that day and it was only skype.  I figured it couldn't of been skype and whatever this virus was it just wasn't on the list. Next day another notifications of an attempt blocked this time i view more details and see this:
Network traffic from cdn.adnxs.com/p/1a/23/ea/b7/1a23eab730c35898c104265d6c326f1c.swf matches the signature of a known attack. The attack was resulted from \DEVICE\HARDDISKVOLUME3\PROGRAM FILES (X86)\SKYPE\PHONE\SKYPE.EXE.
this clearly saying its from skype.exe aswell as skype being the only thing installed that day tells me that update was a virus. Why is this happening? I've been using skype for years and never had problems.

    Most probably false positive.
You need to allow Skype.exe to your norton's firewall settings.

  • Skype Update is Terrible

I was using Skype to send an SMS to a friend's mobile phone and the updater kicked in, I closed the install pop-up window, which caused my Skype session to abort.  The installer is very buggy, does not ask if you want to install now or later (this is sporadic), and whoever programmed this piece of crap needs to go back to Computer Science 101 and pass this time around. IF this happens again, I am going to uninstall Skype.  Can you imagine a session being interrupted by the installer and crashing your session if you are in the midst of a video conference with an important client at work? And yes, I have the skype updater service DISABLED in the task manager, so WTF is going on? I am truly p*ssed off

I'm having the same problem as well, running Windows 7 and worse as Skype will eventually refuse to allow me to input text at all, and will not draw a window after I alt-tab to another program. It also access my hard drive constantly while it is running, even when it should likely be idle.
I've tried both re-installing Skype itself and deleting main.db, in case its size (around 150mb) was causing problems. All of these have been to no avail

  • Skype update disables my laptop's touchpad

I am running Windows 7 on a HP laptop. Since Skype updated itself, if I have Skype running I cannot use the mouse touchpad and I have to plug in an external mouse to regain any sort of control. But even then I have limited use of the mouse. I cannot select other open windows. When I hover over the start button or the task bar, I get the Windows 7 wait icon and cannot click on anything.

It seems to me that you are having a similar type of issue that seems to be common among some users with the latest release.  It's probably less that your mouse is actually disabled but rather that the touchpad software/driver is "frozen" like the rest of your desktop.  For the mean time you will have to downgrade to an earlier release and disable automatic updates.

  • Downgrade Skype 7 to 6 + skype Updater service

    Hi,
I would like to downgrade Skype 7, because I hate this interface, and I hate to be forced to update any software that I don't want.
So, I have downloaded SkypeSetup_6.14.0.104.msi to re-install this version. It works, I have deactivated the auto update in the options of Skype, and I have stopped the Skype Updater in the windows services (services.msc)  BUT every time I restart my computer, Skype 7 comes back...
Does anyone has a solution to this problem? (to stay in Skype 6)
    Thank you so much
    (Sorry for my bad english)
Since the purchase by microsoft, skype is crap
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

After weeks of asking whether I wanted to "upgrade" to Skype 7, despite my having turned updates off, a couple of weeks ago Skype started updating me to 7 automatically without me giving it permission. I tried numerous things to prevent it, including stopping the updater service, blocking the update IP addresses, and so on, but none of them prevented this silent update. In the end I had to resort to changing the permissions to the Skype folder in Program Files (x86) to prevent any write or delete operations by the SYSTEM user. This stopped it uninstalling the old version or installing the new one every day, but it would still quit the application about 10 minutes after first starting up the PC for the day. So instead of having to reinstall Skype 6 every day I now just have to restart it after a few minutes; it's still inconvenient but it's the closest I have managed to get to preventing it entirely. Frankly I've known viruses that were easier to prevent from screwing up your system than this (and yes, that's what it's doing, as I depend on Skype for my work and Skype 7 is unusable for that purpose). Given the number of people who have clearly stated that they cannot use Skype 7, it shows a staggering level of arrogance that they force this update on people with increasingly underhand methods. Anyway, good luck trying to stop it updating.

  • Huge smileys in latest Skype update

In the latest skype update, whenever you post a smiley on its own it becomes this huge animated thing which takes up two lines of text. Is there a way to stop it from doing that so it stays the normal size, like if you add a smiley to an existing line of text? It's very annoying.
