SL and freezing macbook pro?

hello there everybody
okay so, snow leopard is working like a dream so far...quickens up my macbook nicely! anyway, i'm having a problem with it, and was wondering if anybody was experiencing anything similar?
Sometimes when i shut the lid of my macbook, the system freezes and won't respond to anything - not even force quit. most notably, this happened to me last night just after i had almost finished typing an important document on pages, and when i lifted the lid of the macbook it could not be saved! i actually had to just hold the power button and wait til it turned off. my macbook has never frozen before, and in the past 4 days (since i installed SL) has frozen about 5 times - all when i have opened the lid.
i'm wondering if there is anything specifically wrong with my machine or if it is a wider issue affecting other macbook pro snow leopard users?
thanks for reading

I had another total freeze of the system last night. I was in Safari, but the previous 2 occasions I was not.
Just to be clear.
This is *not a hang*, where network access slows everything to a crawl. Or where you can't appear to access anything at all and the beachball spins. (In these occasions you can pull your ethernet, or switch off Airport from the menu and control will be quickly returned).
This is *not a kernel panic*. There is no message of a panic and there is nothing in the Console afterwards (though I'm not an expert at reading it).
This is *not an app. crashing*, where you can implement Force Quit, or Cmd-tab to another app.
This is a TOTAL FREEZE of the Mac. Everything stops. The clock, network traffic (I have iStat Menus), the cpu, the fans, the entire Mac has totally frozen. The only thing working is the monitor. Using the startup button is the only way to recover.
Once restarted, the Console reveals that indeed, everything stopped. There are no messages. (I can check the time because I can see the clock, when it froze.)
Last night, I was in Safari, just moving the mouse with the trackpad (MBPro-Unibody-2008) and this happened. I noticed when I restarted, that the frozen icon on the monitor, was NOT one that should have been showing. In fact the icon that showed, wasn't available anywhere on that page. (Or perhaps not at all in Safari? It is the 'grab' icon with the 4 arrows pointing outwards. Strange.
The only message in the Console was this :
com.apple.WebKit.PluginAgent[178] Debugger() was called!
Subsequently I have removed all the old plugins from HD/Library/Internet Plugins/ and re-installed Flash. So now it's just Safari and Flash ... but I doubt this is the issue ... although, Safari has most probably been running in the background when I had the 2 other freezes ... so who knows.
