SL & GMA 950 on 2007 MacBook
What is the current status of the GMA 950/SL issues described in this (archived) thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2132473&start=0&tstart=0 ?
I've been going crazy with my 2007 Macbook which stopped playing fullscreen video smoothly on my external projector, regardless of source or resolution, since upgrading to SL (10.6.5). This is obviously a software issue. Can anything be done with it or do I need to thank Apple again and downgrade to Leopard?

I´m having the same issue on my 27" iMac C2D 3.06Ghz wich i think has an ATI 256mb video card.
Transission to fullscreen, open folder in launchpad, and expose are very laggy. Switching through different spaces or fullscreen apps works like a charm. I hope apple fix this as it makes the user experience not very pleasant

Displaying 1920x1200 on Samsung 2443BW, macbook with GMA 950
I just purchased a Samsung SyncMaster 2443BW. I connect it through DVI and the highest resolution I can set it at is 1280, higher options are not offered in display preferences.
The monitor's native resolution is 1920x1200.
The macbook I am using has a GMA 950 card which is supposed to support up to 1920x1200 on an external monitor.

*External Display Modes*
The default display mode setting on the MacBook is extended desktop display. To toggle between the two modes, press the F7 key, or go to System Preferences>Displays>Arrangement.
A scaling function is available when the internal display and an external monitor are both operating and the mirror mode is selected. However, the external monitor could have black borders during mirroring, depending on the supported timings between the two displays and on the monitor’s selection algorithm. Black borders are not seen on VGA displays.
Both displays show full-sized images when the display resolution for the external monitor is set to the internal display’s native resolution: 1280 by 800. Both displays can operate with other resolution settings, but in mirror mode, one of the displays may be smaller than the full screen and have a black border around it. With the resolution for the external monitor set to less than 1280 by 800, the image on the internal display is smaller than its screen. For resolution settings larger than 1280 by 800, the image on the external monitor is smaller than its screen.
In mirror mode, the maximum size of the external display is 1280 by 800 at 60 Hz. In extended desktop mode, the maximum size of the external display is 1920 by 1200 at 60 Hz.

is there a driver update for my macbooks gma 950 grafics card ?
You can use Avast Antivirus in XP 64. I really don't recommend the 64 bit version of Windows for anyone unless they have specific 64 bit applications they need to run. The driver support is very minimal (regardless of whether you're using a MacBook or any other 64 bit based architecture). The OS is really designed for people with very specific needs. Now that 64 bit processors are becoming the standard, I expect the gap in support for 64 bit versions of Windows will lessen (actually, I would imagine the next version of Windows after Vista will support both 32 and 64 bit hardware as Leopard will). For now, XP 64 is interesting to play with, but unless you really need to use it for very specific tasks, it just doesn't have a great deal of driver support. Unfortunately, you must use 64 bit drivers for any hardware you want to use. Most consumer manufacturers don't provide 64 bit drivers. Companies like nVidia and ATI are always good with driver support, so you'll be able to get your video up and running without a problem... but alot of the peripherals you might buy are likely not supported.

I got 2 MacBooks, the mid 2007 and the late 2007.
The mid 2007 got an Intel GMA 950 video card with 64 MB.
The late 2007 got an Intel GMA X3100 video card with 144 MB.
The graphics, Exposé, video, open GL tests look smooth & nice on GMA 950 (64 MB).
However, on the newer GMA X3100, the graphics look slow, including the screensaver, even the mac waiting cursor looks a bit slow.
I went to Best Buy to check if the other mac did the same, and they did.
What do you think? Just a driver issue, or what is going on, GMA X3100 was supposed to be better, ironically, it works better in bootcamp than GMA 950, but not in Leopard.There's two things you can do:

You won't get a response, so if you're looking to troubleshoot the issue or send the machine in for repair than you'd need to go the route of AppleCare.
2. If both machines are less than a year old (they sound like it), you'd qualify for the one-year limited hardware warranty. If you choose not to buy AppleCare on your machine and it's older than 90-days you would be subject to a nominal fee to speak with an AppleCare technician for your specific issue. -
Kernel panic in Snow Leopard on 2007 Macbook
My girlfriend has had a Macbook since July 2007, and it's served her just fine for the past four and a half years. Recently, in the past couple of months, she's been getting intermittent recurring kernel panics. I've found various suggestions for "fixing" the problem, but none of the ones I've been able to try -- uninstalling every program downloaded in the last three months, as well as Flash -- have worked. Any help would be appreciated.

Sims 3 with a GMA 950 Graphic Card?
I really want to use the sims 3 on my macbook. It's a few years old. I looked in System Profiler and saw that i have a GMA 950 graphics card? I'm going to upgrad my memory to 2GB. Will it be possible to play the game?

Adding more RAM to Intel GMA 950?
So I've had my iMac (see bottom of post for specs) for a while now and I love everything about it, except the Intel GMA 950 intergrated graphics. It works, but as far as games go, I can hardly play Halo. It's gotten better since 10.5.6 seeing as it boosts graphics performance, but it could be better.
I'm aware that it's VRAM is shared with system memory, so is there any way I can give the chip more of the system RAM to use? 2gb is plenty, so I'm willing to share some. Any help is appreciated.Jerroslaw,
since you’re running Mavericks, open up Activity Monitor while you’ve got your usual selection of apps running, select its Memory tab, and look at the Swap Used setting in the lower left. If it’s displaying “0 bytes” as the amount of swap used, then extra RAM won’t make a difference. Otherwise, to answer your first question, whether it’s worth it or not depends upon how frustrated you are running your usual selection of apps with 4 GB of RAM. It might be that the cost of replacement RAM modules outweighs your level of frustration — only you can make that determination of worth. I would recommend that if you do choose to purchase replacement RAM, that you get a pair of matching modules — either 2 × 4 GB = 8 GB, or 2 × 8 GB = 16 GB, to replace the pair that is currently installed.
For your second question, you don’t have to use Apple-brand RAM, but you do have to use RAM with the same characteristics as your factory-installed RAM uses. Any worthwhile purveyor of RAM for Macs will let you easily locate modules that are compatible with your Mid 2012 MacBook Pro. -

Yes, it would be nice but Intel graphics are set to use only so much Ram even if you have some to spare. It would not provide any better performance even if you could. Because of the design of the chip its not capable of doing a lot of with games for example. The new chip x1300 from Intel which is on the newest MacBooks will use more Ram and can play some games like Far Cry with lower resolutions and slower frame rates. But some say its still pretty good. One of the big problems is that game studio's design games for Nvidia and ATI cards and don't even consider anything else. That's is to bad for those of use who by laptops.

sorry to say, but there's nothing that can be done.
The GMA950 is soldered onto the logic board of the MacBook and can not be cahnged or upgraded.

I am trying to decide on which MacBook to get (new for referb). How does the GMA 950 differ from the GMA X3100? I know the GMA X3100 using more memory (not a problem I plan maxing out the memory on the machine. Just wondering if the GMA X3100 is faster or what.

Let's face it. You cannot make a onboard chip using onboard memory perform like a $500 ATI or Nvidia
graphics card with dedicated memory! Their is no CHEAP FIX!!! After all Apple is not on the top of any game softwares list of systems to write for. Most games are written for Windows machines and high end machines at that! True gamer's they know will spend hundreds of dollars keeping up with the latest graphics cards. Laptops of any brand are not good gaming machines because they cannot be upgraded easily. -
2007 MacBook (Macbook 2,1) having frequent kernel panics
My macbook has been having frequent kernel panics. They usually happen when there several tabs open on the browser and either skype is running or a video is being played in youtube. I thought about it being the GPU's fault too. Indeed most problems seem related to video (though this panic in particular happened just 1 hour after another one and happened while the computer was not even being used, just idling on the screen saver).
I wasn't sure that the backtrace was directly related to the cause of the panic. I know most modern versions of OS X have kexts that are downright incompatible with the GMA 950, but I stayed on Snow Leopard because I knew it was still compatible... Sadly there are not many Apple stores in France for me to take it for service easily, but I'll see what I can do.
I'd apreciate if anyone has more in-depth insights about this panic report. -
64MB GeForce FX Go5200 vs. 64MB (shared) Intel GMA 950 - Which is better???
I currently have a July '04 PowerBook G4 w/ a 64MB GeForce FX Go5200 with 768MB of main memory
I'm thinking about purchasing a MacBook (Black) with Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory
1- Which graphics processor is better, which will yeild "better" graphics?
2- What does it mean "shared" with main memory, is this good or bad?
3- I was planning on getting 1GB of memory for the MacBook, I don't need 2GB's as I have that in my iMac. How much of my main memory will be drawn on to perform graphics tasks and will I need more than 1GB to get the 1GB feeling?

While I do not have exact numbers, the GMA950 is quite a bit better than even a more recent video card than the Go5200. Arc Technica did a review of the MB back in May and in their benchmarks, they found that in some cases the MB beat the MBP.
That said, you will really only notice the difference if you were gaming on the MB.
The shared memory simply means that a portion of the system memory is set aside for the graphics. Generally, it is considered bad, but again - for gaming.
According to Apple, the GMA950 uses 80GB of the system memory, but can use more depending on the system's needs. -
2007 Macbook with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT Repair
Hi, I have a 2007 Macbook A1226 MB896LL/A which is showing all the signs of the GPU problems common to this model. Is apple still repairing them free of charge? Laptop does not chime,the fans are running, nothing on display but you can hear the hard drive chattering, it sort of boots to the point where if you increase/decrease the volume it makes the usual clicking sound, the keyboard backlight comes on if you cover the sensors, it ejects a CD if you press the eject key.
Just take it to the Apple store and they run their NVIDIA diagnostic test, if it fails they will pull up your serial number and see if it's on the list to be replaced. I have a early 2008 Macbook Pro and it had the tell tail signs of a failing Video card and they replaced the logic board at no cost to me. Took it in on Thursday, got it back today (Sat), running like a champ.
