SL mail (status=bounced (User unknown in virtual alias table))

Hello
I have setup mail with 6 locally hosted virtual domains. I created shortnames on workgroup manager with the complete address for the user. After some good results i start getting "status=bounced (User unknown in virtual alias table)". Also the shortname (with the domain name) created for the first virtual host name becomes grey ( like the default )
If i only setup one virtual domain everything works great, but with more than one it starts sending this message in the smtp log.
i dont know if this got something to do with the fact that my host name is mail.example.com and my domain name is example.com.
Hope someone can help me

I'm have the exactly this issue on a new SL server mac-mini. Someone help!

  • User unknown in local recipient table

I have some of my mail users getting this error:
(reason: 550 5.1.1 <<[email protected]>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table)
It also comes in this form:
    Action: failed
    Status: 5.6.0
    Diagnostic-Code: x-unix; user1: Mailbox does not exist
user1 and domain.com changed to protect the innocent.
Any thoughts on what might be causing this?

  • Postifx user unknown in local recipient table

    Good morning --
My fetchmail job has been failing to get mail to my mailbox with this error (presumably from Postfix):
SMTP error: 450 4.1.1 <username@localhost>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table
(I replaced the actual user name with "username")
I'm not sure what to make of this. "username" definitely exists -- I just su'd into his account and ran the fetchmail job that gave me the error.
The problem goes away if I stop and restart postfix, but it seems to come back pretty consistently (I haven't had a chance to figure out the precise timing).
    Any suggesitons?

    Thanks, Mihalis.
I do not us su -l -- just plain old su. And echo $USER returns the correct user (that is, the one I su'd into).
I don't think the problem is fetchmail. It's the same result whether I run it from the prompt ("fetchmail -v") or from the user's cron.
The problem resolves temporarily if I restart postfix, but it returns within a few cycles (the cron job runs every three minutes.
The error message repeats itself for each mail item that fetchmail parses. Here's the last bit of a fetchmail's results:

  • Fetchmail, Postfix user unknown in local recipient table

    Hello all --
My fetchmail job has been failing to get mail to my mailbox with this error:
SMTP error: 450 4.1.1 <username@localhost>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table
(I replace my actual user name with "username")
The problem goes away temporarily if I stop and restart postfix, but it comes back almost immediately.
I'm having a hard time finding any clues in postfix's log. I'm not too sure what to look for, and it's pretty voluminous!
    Any suggestions?

    AlanNYC wrote:
If I turn off local recipient checking, will I actually get my mail?
Yes, all email properly addressed should be delivered to you without problems.
The line only affects improperly addressed email, in this case allowing them to be accepted instead of rejected.
Since you are running Spamassassin and an IMAP server, I suggest also using the line
    luser=[email protected]
which will send all improperly addressed mail to the address specified by "[email protected]". This is what I meant by "catch-all" address.
If you find postfix giving you problems after adding the lines, simply delete them or comment them out by adding a hash mark to the front of the line, e.g.
    #localrecipientmaps =
Alternatively, you can simply make no changes and allow the log messages to accumulate. The messages mean that postfix is doing its job by rejecting email addressed to users that don't exist. The above steps allow you to receive mail addressed to [email protected], where "anything" is any string allowed in an email address.
I assume you're testing your changes using a separate email account, but in case you're not: sign up for a free email account with any of a number of free email services (Gmail, Yahoo) and test your postfix install as you make changes using the free account.

  • Virtual Mail Domains and Users

I'm having an issue with virtual hosts and mail hosts.  I have three domains lets call them domain1.com, domain2.com and domain3.com
now lets say I have a user russ and he wants to recive mail only at domain2.com is there anyway to just let him recieve mail at that domain?  becasue he also recives mail at domain1.com becasue it is the default domain.
Any help on this is greatly appreciated.
    Thank You,
    Russ

Did you ever sort this properly or just go with your 'fix'?
I have set up our 10.5 mailserver and everything works fine for people with accounts on the server but forwarders to external mail accounts are not working properly.
Emails sent from an external source to a forwarding account on our server receive a bounce message with the errors...
    <[email protected]>: host mailserver.domain1.com[/var/imap/socket/lmtp]
said: 550-Mailbox unknown. Either there is no mailbox associated with this
550-name or you do not have authorization to see it. 550 5.1.1 User unknown
(in reply to end of DATA command)
    ...and...
Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 550-Mailbox unknown. Either there is no mailbox
associated with this 550-name or you do not have authorization to see it.
    550 5.1.1 User unknown
In this case '[email protected]' is an account on the mailserver set as a forwarder to '[email protected]'
Despite the sevder getting the bounce message the actual message is however forwarded and received by '[email protected]'

  • Mavericks mail server "user unknown" error

For some reason, the mail server bounces the email sent to local network users and returns a "user unknown" error. The same error is received when an email from an external domain is sent to one of the open directory associated email addresses.
However, sending email from these accounts works just fine, just like sending and receiving email associated with the diradmin account.

  • When i send a mail to the user of messaging server, it returns saying unknown user.

I am trying to add a mail user to iplanet messaging server 5.1, I am able to configure that user from my mail client (outlook) but when i send mail to that user, it returns saying unknown user. I can see that user in LDAP data base/

This could be symptomatic of the iMS 5.1 server not yet having done a full synch to its alias database of the LDAP server. This is done every 24 hours (default) at 2 or 3 am. You can synch manually by running the "imsimta dirsync -F" command.

  • Mailman + Postfix - User unknown

Hi all, I'm having some trouble installing mailman (who doesn't?) right now.
I tried everything. I followed EXACTLY what is said on our wiki (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mailman) but still it's not working.
Actually the only thing that is not working is 'sending an email to the mailing list'. And this is quite important for a mailing list, I guess.
After spending hours trying, here is my current status:
I created a mailing list called pynochio, with [email protected] as the mailing list address.
Postfix reads my /var/lib/mailman/data/virtual-mailman file and applies the mapping. I'm sure about that because I changed the content of virtual-mailman (and then hashed it using postmap command) and the email postfix was trying to authenticate changed. (so there is no permission issue from this side)
But then postfix concludes that the user doesn't exist. Here are fresh logs from journalctl, just for you:

This warning appears because in the tutorial we are said to put `too.gy` (our domain) in mydestination and because in my postfix database inside the `domain` table, `too.gy` is said to be virtual (transport=virtual). I don't know if it should be that way.
My problem is that I don't really know how postfix and mailman are supposed to communicate. Postfix is supposed to let mailman handle things since [email protected] is a list address but it doesn't.
I read some tutorials (on other distribs) and they are using lists.too.gy domain for their lists address (it seems easier) but it looks like there's a better way to do it and in the archlinux mailman documentation, we are not using such subdomain for our lists. So I want to do it the right, archlinux way.
There is `postfix_to_mailman.py` transport script thing but I read it's a bad practice...
Here is the output of `postconf -n` (which respects the mailman tutorial, once again):

If I turn off local recipient checking, will I actually get my mail?
Yes, all email properly addressed should be delivered to you without problems.
The line only affects improperly addressed email, in this case allowing them to be accepted instead of rejected.
Since you are running Spamassassin and an IMAP server, I suggest also using the line
    luser=[email protected]
which will send all improperly addressed mail to the address specified by "[email protected]".

  • Help Understanding the Log - status=sent to status=bounced

    Hello,
This is a very newb question and I'm very sorry to have to ask this here. I attempted googling it and searching for it, and I just can't seem to find a clear answer on this issue, so I'm hoping someone can just help me understand 2 messages in my log here quickly.
First, we send emails to Company A all the time and have no problem doing so; however, recently we had the need to email a new employee at Company A that we've never emailed before and anything we email to him gets bounced back.
At looking at the logs I have the following 2 messages (and what I think they mean), can someone confirm with me what these messages mean. Sorry, again I know, newbie.
    Nov 3 09:51:30 xxxx postfix/smtp[3785]: 72C2CCC203A: to=<[email protected]>, relay=127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1]:10024, delay=0.18, delays=0.01/0/0/0.17, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (250 2.0.0 Ok: queued as 9C61DCC2049)
This means my server sent the message out to the Internet without issue correct?
    Nov 3 09:51:33 xxxx postfix/smtp[3792]: 9C61DCC2049: to=<[email protected]>, relay=mail.global.frontbridge.com[216.32.181.22]:25, delay=3.3, delays=0/0/3.1/0.21, dsn=5.0.0, status=bounced (host mail.global.frontbridge.com[216.32.181.22] said: 554 <[email protected]>: Recipient address rejected: Access denied (in reply to RCPT TO command))
Does this mean another server (mail.global.frontbridge.com) flagged it as spam or blocked the email from going through?
If so, I'm really confused why we can email everyone else at companya.com but not this particular person. Then I don't even know who to blame as far as the problem goes, is my company blocked from sending out or is Company A blocked from receiving. (I'm thinking a blacklist)
I'm just looking for verification I guess and maybe what I should look at doing to resolve the issue.
In googling this issue, it did appear others out there are having this issue with mail.global.frontbridge.com, but that doesn't mean my server is setup correctly I guess ... even though I'm fairly certain it is .... :/
Thank you anyways to whoever can help me confirm what's going on here.
    -Jessee

The problem is most likely on their end. If your mail server was blacklisted by them, you would not be able to mail any address on their server.
    That said:
    Nov 3 09:51:30 xxxx postfix/smtp3785: 72C2CCC203A: to=<[email protected]>, relay=127.0.0.1http://127.0.0.1:10024, delay=0.18, delays=0.01/0/0/0.17, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (250 2.0.0 Ok: queued as 9C61DCC2049)
This means my server sent the message out to the Internet without issue correct?
No, it means the e-mail was delivered to the content filter (spam/virus)) on your server (relay=127.0.0.1 = localhost = your server).
    Nov 3 09:51:33 xxxx postfix/smtp3792: 9C61DCC2049: to=<[email protected]>, relay=mail.global.frontbridge.comhttp://216.32.181.22:25, delay=3.3, delays=0/0/3.1/0.21, dsn=5.0.0, status=bounced (host mail.global.frontbridge.comhttp://216.32.181.22 said: 554 <[email protected]>: Recipient address rejected: Access denied (in reply to RCPT TO command))
The receiving server (mail.global.frontbridge.com) is rejecting the e-mail. Since they only give a generic error, you will need to ask them why. (Chances are they have not defined the new user on their gateway.)

  • Mail expunge error and old mail switching to new mail status

Everything started when I set to enabled in mail-general-when searching mail boxes: include encrypted pages.
I was looking for a way to seach in the content of the message for the mails.
Then the first error appeared: the mails when I read those mails returned by themselves to the state of unread.
Then I disabled again the optin: mail-general-when searching mail boxes: include encrypted pages,
but the error continued. and all my mails (more than 1200) were set automatically to the "new" mail status each time that I started the mail program.
Now I created a mailbox named "old" when I move the new messages that I have read to that file.
But now the mail program uses the memory constantly.
with out the mail, the computer memory is near 5%, but when I start the mail program and use it constantly, the memory goes to 100% until I receive the mail expunge error.
The machine has 4Ghz ram, and the mail program uses all until I got the error, I am using a G5, dual cpu, 2ghz, mac osx server. There are no other programs using the memory.
1)how can I configure the mail to avoid the expunge error?
2)how I can configure the mail to keep the mails that I just read to an old state (avoiding those to restart their state to "new")?
3)it is possible to do searchs in all the content of the messages?
    thanks
    Alberto

    You’re welcome.
Well, not knowing what the problem really is, and since it apparently started to happen after you changed some settings, I’d try setting up Mail again from scratch and import your mail back afterwards.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk, try this:
    1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
    2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/. Move (not copy) the entire Mail folder out of there, to the Desktop.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop.
    5. Open Mail and set it up again from scratch. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and check that everything works fine.
    6. You’ll have to re-configure all your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    7. If Mail works fine now and you had any messages stored in local mailboxes, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Mail for Mac OS X as the data format, and follow the instructions to import your mail from the old Mail folder that’s now on the Desktop. Import the Mailboxes folder first, then each of the POP-username@mailserver account folders, if any.
    8. If .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Mail inbox shows no mail on managed user account

Upgraded to 10.5.6, mail works fine in my main account.
However in managed account for my daughter her mail shows no messages.
i can find her old inbox, I want to restore it to her inbox.. Any thoughts?
I am using parental controls, I have added all her email addresses to the list. I can see her previous recipient list.
Also when I close Mail in her user account I must force quit it, do not have to in my main user account.
iMac G5, 2 gb ram, did archive and install to load 10.5.6, all software up graded, permissions verified and fixed using Onyx and disk utility.

I certainly agree you have to wait to clone intel vs ppc!
But the settings inside the user should certainly be portable - they are just XML files and the options need to be the same even if the code has to be different when compiled as a universal binary versus PPC only code.
The time out period and on/off status as well as whether you need a password to unlock/unsleep is a system wide setting. The last admin user to make a change there wins (undoes any other settings)
The other settings can be different for each user. (Dock icons/arrangement).
Again, simply make one mac perfect and then make a disk image of the /Users/shortname folder on the "correct" mac and copy the contents of that folder to another machine. I think you will find that as long as you correctly preserver the owner permissions/bits the new mac will look exactly like the old one.

  • Email notifications stuck in Mail status

    Hi,
The notification mailer is up and running and we receive emails when we run the test. However, when a user goes through the application, lets say the Purchase requisition process, the process completes successfully, we see the notification in his worklist, we see the notification in the wf_notifications table with status of MAIL, but the user does not get the email notification. The email address is defined both on the employee record and on the user record. The background process is running but it doesn't pick up the notification. After a while the notification gets expired.
does anyone have any clue as to why the test notification from the mailer works but we don't get an email when we go thru the requisition process although it completes successfully ?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Regards
    Preeti

There are various aspects to troubleshooting this issue.
Let me explain the mailer architecture in a nutshell and then troubleshooting tips.
    1. Notification activity in a workflow process is executed by the engine. The activity makes an entry in WF_NOTIFICATIONS table with appropriate values for RECIPIENT_ROLE, SUBJECT and MAIL_STATUS based on recipient's notification preference.
    2. At the same time, an business event is raised for that notification and enqueued on to the WF_DEFERRED queue.
    3. The Workflow Deferred Agent Listener dequeues the event, builds a XML message for that notification and enqueues it again to WF_NOTIFICATION_OUT queue.
    4. Workflow Notification Mailer polls the WF_NOTIFICATION_OUT queue and when a message arrives, it dequeues it, parses the XML for that notification and builds a MIME message. Sends the MIME message to the intended recipient_role's e-mail address.
In summary the message for e-mail goes like this...
Ntf Activity -> WF_DEFERRED -> WF_NOTIFICATION_OUT -> Notification Mailer Now things to check.
    1. Is the Deferred Agent Listener or Deferred Notification Agent Listener running?
    2. Is the Notification Mailer running with Correlation ID parameter set to null? Because the mailer could be configured to only process e-mail notifications from a specific Item Type.
    3. Is the intended RECIPIENT_ROLE's e-mail address and notification_preference values in WF_ROLES view correct? The email address should be valid and notification preference should be MAIL%.
There is a debug script $FND_TOP/sql/wfmlrdbg.sql. Run this for the given notification id and you will be able to see in which queue the message is stuck.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mail Soft Bouncing

I had been running a mail server with OS X 10.5 client software. All worked fine. I finally got 10.5 server and have had several problems since installing. I am having lots of mail soft bouncing. I do not know if this is due to the spam filter, AV, or the configuration. I have also had issues with other servers connecting to mine. My Exchange server at work will retry and retry. Finally after about 5 to 10 hours later I get a bunch of email from it. A friend who had trouble sending mail said his server timed out connecting to mine and had an EHLO error. Also, I take it there is no GUI for the spam filter or AV configurations? I have attached the postconf file. Any help would be appreciated.
