SL & USB error message

I use this particular Mac as a workstation for Logic Pro. I have two USB cables connected to the computer. One is for a powered hub (hosting a midi interface and an iLok key) and the second is for an audio interface. These devices are plugged into a power strip. Before I finish a session, I turn off the power strip to which these devices are connected. I then get the following error message on the Mac:
"Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled. To prevent damaging your computer, the USB device drawing too much power has been disabled. Other devices may have also been disabled. When you disconnect the device drawing too much power, your other USG devices will be enabled again."
Is this a problem? Am I doing the computer any harm? I'd rather not be reaching around the back of the iMac to unplug the USB cables every time I turn off the power strip if I don't have to.
Thanks for any thoughts,
Jim

Hey DaddyPaycheck,
Thanks for the reply. Here's what I do, in order.
1. Quit Logic.
2. Disconnect external hard drives.
3. Turn off power strip to which the powered USB hub is connected. This is when I get the error message.
So after I cut the power to the USB hub, is it the trying to draw power from the computer? I'm not sure where else I can connect the hub. The computer has a wireless keyboard, so no USB port there. And I could always disconnect by pulling the plug on the back of the machine (though being an iMac, it's a pain to get reconnected as everything is in the back and virtually invisible). My other option is to just leave the power strip on and say screw it.

  • Even with nothing connected to my Mac Pro, I get a USB error message

Even with nothing connected, I get this error message:
Because a USB device was drawing too much power from your computer, one or more of your USB devices have been disabled.
I have restarted a few times and restarted in safe mode, and reset the PRAM and it is still there.
    Any ideas?

Even with the mouse and keyboard unplugged, I got the same error message. It always gives me 5 warning messages in 5 separate dialog boxes. The 2 USB ports on the front of the machine are disabled, and the 3 in the back are ok.
Profiler recognizes the "Hub in Apple Pro Keyboard" that lists the keyboard and the USB laser mouse (Logitec).
I'll give the SMC reset a try, but I have read in another thread where it didn't work for the guy with the problem, and his final solution was a complete re-install of the system software. I'm thinking maybe an upgrade to Lion 10.7 might fix it without having to rebuild my whole computer. I'm using 10.6.8.

  • CM1312 NFP: WIndows 7: USB Error message ~"Lost Connection"

With the 1312 connected to my Windwos 7 desktop, periodically Windows gives an error message that indicates that it has lost connection to the printer.  Unplugging and replugging the USB cable fixes the problem.  Otherwise the print & scan functions work perfectly.  Symptomatically it appears as if the printer goes to sleep and stops responding to whatever "keep alive" messages Windows might be sending.  Is there a setting in the printer, in Windows or in the printer driver software that can prevent this message?
BTW, the other way to work around this problem is to just access the printer via the Ethernet but the scan funciton is not accessible via the network (an unfortunate limitation).

    aluniewski,
I am sorry, but to get your issue more exposure I would suggest posting it in the commercial forums since this is a commercial printer. You can do this at http://h30499.www3.hp.com/hpeb/ .
    I hope this helps.

  • USB error message deactivating my printer

    Hi,
I'm a recent convert to Mac and I'm glad I made the witch. It's been plain sailing with only one niggly problem.
When I power up an error message tells me " USB over current notice. ! A USB device is currently drawing too much power. The hub it is attached to will be deactivated."
In order to logon I have to press OK to the above and it then deactivates my printer. I receive the error message even when a USB is not connected.
I would appeciate any advice to solve this.
    Thanks,
    Finn

What brand and model is the router?
Also, is the wireless light a flashing blue light or a solid blue light?
Press the wireless button and go to settings>printer report>test report.  Does it show anything as failed?  If so, what items are listed?

  • Usb error message "USB over currnet notice" both usbs dont work.

Ive looked at many posts with my similar problem but nothing really answered it. I recently connected a digital camera with a usb cable. When I turned the camera on the error message came up that I "USB over current notice". I have a feeling that I might have burt the USB. Im not sure because i have been reading posts that say you can reset something, or might have to reinstall the operating system.
I would also like to mention that both USB's dont work. I plugged the camera in the USB closer to the user. The usb towards the back does not work at all. The one closer to me does do something. When I plug my ipod into that usb, the computer doesnt recognize it, and the ipod doesnt recognize that i plugged it in either. But when I unplug it from the computer, the ipod lights up recognizing that I have unplugged it.
It seems that it works very very little amount. Im thinking that I have a hardware problem. So does anyone know what it will cost, or what must be done to fix this problem. Not having a usb is not easy to live with.
Also, the firewire, camera, mousepad, keyboard and all that stuff works.

    hi there-
the first thing i would try is resetting the macbook smc. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319 when you restart the computer, reset pram by holding apple-option-p-r until you hear two sets of startup chimes instead of the usual one. if this doesn't help and you need repair, it depends on the extent of the damage how much the repair will cost. if you phone Apple (1-800-275-2273) or take it to a store, they can give you estimates for different types of repairs, but of course no one can know precisely what parts are needed unless the computer is examined. best of luck. • ITunes 7.3 problem synching and error message

OK so the first thing that was happening was the error:
The iPod is connected so a low speed 1.1 USB port. For better performance you should connect it to a high speed 2.0 port if one is available on your computer.
I didn't always get this message, just in the last few months, I assume after a software update. Everything worked fine, I just got the message everytime I connected the iPod to the computer and used iTunes. I thought I had USB 2.0 but I guess I have 1.1.
Then next error message is: The iPod cannot be synched. The required file is in use.
So the BIG problem is, when I try to sync my music library to the iPod, it will only go so far and then the iPod disconnects. I get the Device Removal error message: The decice you removed was not properly put away. Data might have been lost or damaged…
Then the iPod freezes and I have to reset it manually. SOMETIMES though the iPod has not frozen, and will automatically reconnect, try to sync, only to disconnect again, and then freeze. It happens when I let it automatically try to sync, AND if I choose to sync just a few folders at a time. I have restored the iPod, updated the software. I think it is a problem with version 7.3 but I'm not sure as I hadn't used the iPod for a while, so can only assume that in the meantime there was a software update, I updated, and then a week or two later only connected the iPod to charge/sync.
When I called Apple, the rep hadn't heard of anything like this. So I tried the computer at work, it synched fine, but I think it had version 7.2. And no USB error message, but it's a new Mac Pro.
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I have been getting this error message for a while - I narrowed it down to the calendar and contacts files.
Mount your ipod through itunes. From the desktop, open the ipod to the calendars and contacts folders - drag those contents to the trash, empty the trash, and re-sync the contacts and calendars through itunes.
I don't know why this happens, but I have seen it happen on 4 different ipods (15gb 3g, 30gb 5g video, 2gb nano, 4gb nano), no matter what the version of itunes on what platform.
    Hope this helps.

You can only add songs to your iOS device from iTunes via Wi-Fi sync or via your cable, not Bluetooth.

That's an entirely different issue, unrelated to your iOS devices.

  • TS1369 Hello! I have an Ipod Shuffle 2nd Generation and it is not recognized by my Windows 8 based laptop. An error message of 'USB device not recognized' is shown. I have the latest ITunes version installed, and tested the dock in other pc's.

    Hello!
I have a problem connecting my Ipod Shuffle 2nd generation to my Windows 8 based laptop. The computer doesn't recognize the Ipod and issues an error message saying 'USB device not recognized'. I tried uninstaling ITunes(latest version) and all other Apple software and reinstaling it back again, checked my USB hubs in the 'Device Manager' section of the Control Panel, you name it.
I could really use some help solving this.
I've turned to the troubleshooting section in Apple Support but it has nothing concerning situations in wich the device isn't even shown in the 'My Computer' folder.
Help a brother out, will you???

Found a solution in another forum http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-63733-ipod-not-detected-on-computer (a few posts down).
It was for an IPOD so you can see those details in the link.
Found how to reset a shuffle and inserted it into these instructions - did not have to follow his last steps.
    - Turn off computer.
    - Plug Shuffle into usb.
    - Then you must reset your shuffle
    To reset iPod shuffle:
Disconnect iPod shuffle from the computer (if connected).
Move the switch on the iPod shuffle to the OFF position. Note that when iPod shuffle is off, the green stripe by the switch is not visible
Disconnect iPod shuffle from the computer (if connected).
Move the switch on the iPod shuffle to the OFF position. Note that when iPod shuffle is off, the green stripe by the switch is not visible.
    - Start computer and it should install the usb driver for the ipod automatically.
    - Your i pod will say do not unplug so don't. then open itunes and it will be there.
I did not have to do these thing below – did not get error message and shuffle was displayed in Itunes. / LMc
Just remember to not only eject ipod from itunes but stop usb.
Go to the program icons near the clock and right click the usb icon and "safely remove hardware" will appear and click it.
Stop it and select "apple ipod".

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
