Slaving Logic To ProTools 7

Hi there,
i remember reading once that someone had posted that he ran Logic as a slave to protools.
Here's what I'd like to do
Hit play in Protool 7 and have logic running to sync in background. Thus monitoring thru protools only having logic doing the midi stuff. I have it running 50% - and i can get it to work but only if using an (Outside Outboard) trigger for Logic and protools. However, I would love to be able to hit Play in protools and have Logic sync in the background. If anyone can help me on how to set this up I'D be a happy man:-)
Thanks in advance guys
Steve

There can be a LOT gained by using this setup...
Firstly, PT CAN be triggered from Logic. I haven't tried running both programs on the same machine (I've run PT on a slave to the master computer running Logic, and using my audio interfaces to route midi), but PT will recognize any ports that you point to it.
I love Logic, but Pro Tools handles audio WAY better than Logic does...
-the audio file naming structure is more hip and advanced
-audio editing is much better
-with PT 7, region groups are possible
-USING MULTI TAMBERAL INSTRUMENTS IS BETTER (one of my biggest complaints about Logic...you can't load a Multi Instrument, like Kontakt 2, and then have MIDI tracks point CC information to discreet midi channels, they all come in on the same channel, which really *****)...also, getting the audio routed back to from the Multi instrument is easier in PT 7....this is really the main reason why I'm even using Protools in my work.
-Most dubbing stages consider a PT session a desireable deliverable for a dub session.
-you can load up templates in PT and just have MIDI stuff in Logic, making it a faster load in Logic (especially useful for larger projects with multiple cues using the same virtual ensemble.
I believe that your assumption regarding audio routing is correct. There's also a program called Racks..you (and I as well) should check it out.
I LOVE Logic's plug-ins...and I don't have any real plug-ins (like a good reverb) in PT, so I always end up importing back into logic, which stinks.

  • For those using Logic and Protools

This is for any of you out there that use both Logic and Protools in your workflow. What are the reason(s) that you might do this? How do (if they do) these programs augment one another in the process of creating music? From initial idea to final mix, where do these programs plug in and why?
    Thanks in advance

I hear that there is no automatic Plug-In Delay Compensation in Pro Tools. You need to set a value manually. According to a training video I saw of Pro Tools, this appears to be true. I also hear that PDC still isn't implemented in the version 8.0 release, though I can't confirm that.
For a guy that's been using Logic for years, I may just be spoiled as far a PDC is concerned, but it seems like for all those missing features in Logic (such as Elastic Time), there are important things we take for granted that aren't available on the PT side. Add the 32-channel (16 stereo!) limit in LE that we rarely think about in Logic.
That said, PDC and channel limits aside, version 8 of PT seems like a pretty compelling upgrade from 7.x. I hope Apple is keeping an eye on things. If there's ever a serious competition between platforms as far as features go, it starts now.

    You're right.
but the one thing I do like about not having the computer calculate the delay, is that when I am doing my final mixing, I can calculate it myself. this might be a little geeky for some, but in the end it allows me to control this aspect of the DAW that I cannot do in other DAWs.
I have noticed sometimes in Logic that some things do not get played back at the same absolute timepoint. In other words, i suspect the PDC might be changing upon each playback. This is fine for most music, but when doing either electronica or Jazz (believe it or not) this is not good.
This has only happened to me once or twice, but is something to note. In PT HD, the delay remains constant, so dealing with it is a one time deal. Set your delays, and you're done.

  • Best Way to export synth tracks from logic into Protools LE

Hi I have recorded my song in Logic using the software instruments and I am going to mix it in protools any suggestions as to the best way to get these tracks out of logic and into protools? Just wondered what different options there are and if there are any audible differences once put into protools. thanks for any thoughts.

"Export all Tracks as Audio Files" found under File>Export.
This will render audio files of your software instruments that start at bar 1, beat 1, and can be dragged right into Pro Tools. The export happens "pre-fader", so it is bounced at unity gain, and excludes any automation.
If there is automation that needs to be included (like a filter sweep or something like that), you'll need to solo the track, and bounce it, because a bounced file does include automation.
Also, if you're using a multi-channel instrument, you'll need to bounce those tracks separately as well.

  • Logic Express , Protools cross compatibility?

Hey everything thanks for taking the time to read this!
I'd like to record using Apple Logic however for mixing and mastering my friend uses the latest version of ProTools, will I be able to create files that he will be able to work with, or will there be some problem in compatibility?
    Thanks!
    Gerald

I work just the opposite with my friends who use Protools. For you it's pretty easy as you can bounce tracks and he can load them all in to PT in sync. You'll want to consult with him about what effects to keep in and what he has on his PT rig. I would recommend doing all the EQ and compression on PT but keeping the plugins you use that are integral to your music on your tracks, like delays with automation and reverb. Unless he has some sweet reverb plugs.

  • Logic Pro / Protools - G5 and Mac Pro?

I have a G5 with 8Gb (so still an ok machine) with many VST's and EW library through Kompakt player etc... this also runs Logic 8.02 and Ableton 7 well on Tiger 10.4.11
I have now just bought a Mac Pro 3.0Ghz with 10Gb and Protools HD, on Leopard 10.5.5 also with a few AU/VST's and some TDM plug ins running the same Logic 8.02 and Ableton as above...
I should also point out that I have 2 x 20" Cinema Displays..
Now I dont know the best way to connect these if i want to use them together and the best working way of doing this?
I have one set of Keyboard/Mouse and 1 x USB M-Audio Keyboard too - is there a way to share them ?
I was thinking of selling on the G5 and TRY to migrate my libraries to the Mac Pro but i dont think i'll get much for it and it is stable with some good VST's using Tiger.
    So I have a few questions! :
    1. Whats the best way to connect these to share my 1 keys/mouse and the USB Radium Keyboard? I did try teleport but couldn't get this working after a while and was a bit reluctant with the KVM switch route?
2 - Do I keep the G5 for the sequencing and Logic/Abelton (composing) and use the Mac Pro for Recording/Protools? - Seems a bit of a waste with a 10Gb Mac Pro! but the G5 is stable...
3 - I have been using 2 screens on the G5, but now do I use 1 screen per machine? or is there another utility that I can swap between the two and have 2 screens for whichever machine Im working on??
    Sorry for all the questions!
I do think I have sorted a "file share" folder if i go down the 2 machines route whereby I can drop and access files into desktop folders on each machine, and use them on either
Any ideas, thoughts, ?? - just want to get the best of the two machines incase I can't (or decide not) to sell the G5..
    Thanks!

    Hi,
your question is interesting But I don't want to replay your specific question... There are anthyng wrong in your desire to use 2 Macs... BUT
I have worked on a similar environment in the past...
    I'm talking about G4 400 + a Pentium 3 PC with tascam Giga studio...
I suggest to avoid to use 2 computers...
Logic is able to work without Pro Tools...
Pro Tools is obsolete and you are forced to stay on Leopard 10.5.5...
    Why?
    Logic works on Leopard 10.5.6...
My G5 is faster than ever with Leopard 10.5.6
Logic 8.0.2 is 1000 times more STABLE on Leopard.. (I never get any Logic crash with G% and 10.5.6!!!
I cannot see any reason to work with a G5 and Tiger.. (if you don't need to use Wa**s demo reset, or other crack sh*t stuffs)
I suggest to install 10.5.6 in your G5!
Leopard and Logic comes with Maximum sound quality... Pro Tools is a step Back to the past!...
Just my personal opinion... but I'm not alone about this point!
Using 2 Computers on a Digital studio is a obsolete way to work!
    too much problems...
too much time waste for syncing
DOUBLE PERCENTAGE OF bugs, crash, and malfunction
Double percentage to loose your mind, to go crazy... to much distraction... I want stay focused to my composition without problems...
you need to use Remote Desktop
    youneed to use Sharing network
you will loose about 50% of CPU power processing.
ON OS X SHARING network must be turned OFF to avoid POPs, Clicks, Audio drops and so ON!
Anyway you are free to testing by yourself...
    Good Luck
    G

  • Logic 8 & ProTools

Is there any way to open a ProTools song file in Logic?

    Hi,
There is currently no way to open a ProTools session file directly in Logic.
This is what I do to import a PT session:
    1. Consolidate all audio files so they start at the same time, and have no edits left in them.
    2. Save ALL plug-in parameters, in the plug-ins' native format (ie Waves presets saved as Waves presets).
    3. Render the ambience effects as their own file. e.g. save the reverb as it's own stereo file, the delay, etc... (helps in guiding the new mix in Logic)
    4. Make detailed notes on anything that is not saveable as audio or MIDI info. Like take choices, etc...
    Cheers

  • How to rewire logic to protools 10hdx

is there anybody who knows how to do this?

    ivanleyva02 wrote:
the thing is, i can do it on my macbook using the internal in and out but i can't do it with the hdx, so it has to be a way to make it possible
Can you 'see' the Logic instruments in PTs, send them MIDI from PT, and sync the transports? Routing just audio is 1/4 of rewire.
Not owning hdx, I can't say as to specifics on that, but if all you want is audio I've used soundflower to route that between the two, just to see if it would work.  I've only had limited, unreliable success with MIDI & transport syncing, but didn't really pursue it beyond basic IAC routing.

  • Slaving logic 8 to other laptop-HOW????

HEY. HAVE HAD NO SUCCESS IN THIS. I SIMPLY WANT TO HAVE LOGIC SEQUENCER SYNCED TO ANOTHER LAPTOP THAT IS RUNNING ABLETON LIVE. HAVE A MOTU ULTRALIGHT SNDCRD, THAT IS DEFO RECEIVING MIDI MSG IN THE MIDI INPUT, SO ITS SOMETHING NOT SET UP RIGHT IN LOGIC. HELP PLEASE.
    THANKS

If I were you I would just max out your RAM and slave Abelton to Logic using rewire on the same Laptop. Works great! I don't think it is possible to connect two laptops together with one (MOTU Ultralite) interface. I do not believe the Ultralite is made for this...unless by some witchcraft we expect to sync two computers across a firewire network using the Ultralite as a hub. Never thought of that before. Please provide more details on exactly what hardware you are using and also the ports you are connecting. I have only been able to successfully sync two computers by using two interfaces to allow communication between both computers.

  • HATE MBox as much as I do? Can't work w/ Garageband or Logic OR ProTools!

Wasted sevral hours trying to figure out why MBox would not work with Tiger. Got CoreAudio 7. Wasted more hours trying to figure out why Core Audio 7 from Digidesign site will kill the MIDI control in Apple MIDI Audio Setup.
OK, after wasting another few HOURS, I cheered when I was able to do this.
Uninstall Core Audio 7, install Pro Tools LE 6.4 upgrade that also installs some version of Core Audio, but at least Apple MIDI Setup sees the MIDI setup AND the Audio MBox.
So, I cheered. But then, try as I would, I could not get MBox audio to come into Logic Express 7.1 OR Garageband. I detest the Mbox box even more now.
I can't even LAUNCH Pro Tools 6.4 because --- despite restarts, checking with Activity Monitor, making sure nothing is running, enabling AND disabling MBox in Sound and Audio/MIDI setups, Pro Tools fails to run saying it cannot use MBox as it is being used by some other application. No other error, nothing. Just that BS. I HATE MBox. Avoid buying one even if I have to sell mine. Yes, that is how much I hate it.
Has anyone gotten Core Audio 7 and MIDI working with MBox with Logic Express and or Garageband? Please advise. Thanks.
    Imran

I have my mbox working with audio and midi in Logic Express 7.0.1 but I do not use Pro Tools anymore for various reasons. Personally I think many companies feel Mac users are not a significant part of their income anymore so do not put alot of resources towards developing the products we use. I will not be buying anymore Digidesign products in the future and yes I do hate my MBox. Digi may have some fine products but the Mbox is not one of them. I have complained before about problems in other threads. I suggest starting fresh (if that is possible) but leaving Pro Tools out. If you need PT that bad, just buy a PC and then you will have PT and all the other problems that come with Microsoft box. I am checking out the threads for opinions on different interfaces and am leaning toward a firebox (PreSonus) I know someone who has a Firepod, never had any problems ( unless he is drinking, coincidence, I think so).But he is a PC person, not a very close friend. Good luck, I wish I could be of more help. Phil

  • Mix logic/master protools

I created a mix in logic. I recorded at 48 sampling rate. now I want to master in PT. I want to bounce my logic mix to a stereo track and import that into PT to master....
When bouncing in Logic what sampling and bit rate do I bounce down to get ready for PT?not sure how to do this..
also should it be a SD2 file?if not what kind? thank you!!!

Export at 24 Bits and 48K (although see my next paragraph on sample rate). AIFF vs. WAV vs. SDII doesn't matter - it's just a matter of telling PT what kind you intend to use when creating the PT session. That goes for sample and bit rate, too, of course.
If this is ultimately destined for CD you'd be better off doing everything at 44.1K. If you already recorded live/acoustic tracks 48K, you'll have to do a sample rate conversion from 48k to 44.1k at some point before burning the CD. This could happen bouncing out of Logic or after mastering in PT (iTunes may do it automatically on burn, too, but I don't know). The choice would depend on who has a better sample rate converter, which is too big a topic for here (or at least for me). IF, however, you're song is all soft synths, and again you're going to end up on CD (as opposed to a film project), change the whole session to 44.1K and bounce at 44.1K as well.
One question I have is: since Logic is 32 bits internal or whatever, are you supposed to dither down to 24 Bits??

  • A few protools to logic questions.

    Hello.
long time protools user and returning logic user (version 3.x was the last interaction)
am really enjoying the sequencing aspects to logic but am becoming increasingly frustrated by what seems to be a few really simple features but constantly used features of protools.
hopefully someone might be able to point me in the right direction.
they all have to do with audio editing.
    1) selection snapping to timeline. i have found the marquee tool, but how do then snap the playhead to where i want to place the copied selection?
    2) duplicating a region on the time line creates a second instance of the region, however its the same instance.. thus any editing will occur to all regions. is there was a way to default this to automatically create new regions (as in protools, well in protools it creates a new region once edited).
    3) another question on snapping.. in the main timeline you can select snap to bar.. but is there way to snap to smaller transients than a whole bar? i know you can set that in piano roll.. but what about for either the sample editor or the main timeline?
these are all key features which are used constantly in protools.. and before i get a barrage of responses, i know logic isnt protools.. but some of these features i have mentioned are present across most if not all audio editing applications (cubase, live and even fruity loops)
i would really like to cross back to logic, but i need to be able to perform the same basic tasks..
    help me obiwan..
    tom

Not sure about question 1, mainly because I have always just manually moved regions where I wanted them. But because of the answer to question #3, it's never been an issue for me.
If you click and hold on the "Snap" menu (upper right hand corner of the Arrange page), you'll see a drop down list of options, which include, bar, beat, division, ticks, frames, etc... this helps limit where the region will land while dragging. I personally leave it set to "smart", which, depending on zoom level, allows me to place regions exactly where I want, very quickly.
My "nudge" key commands also help in certain circumstances.
As far as duplicating a region, yes, you are merely copying the region, but it's still referencing the same audio file, so any edits done on one will affect all copies.
After option/dragging a region, if you want to edit it, and ONLY that particular copy, simply go under the audio menu, and select "Convert Regions to New Audio Files". This can be assigned a key command, so it can be a pretty instantaneous thing. Now it's a separate audio file, and any edits done to it won't happen on the original.
    Hope some of that helps...

  • Can't run neither Protools or Logic on my new intel mac!

Hi. I am really starting to get frustrated about this!!! I recently bought a Macbook Pro to run Logic Pro 7.2.2 on using a digi002 rack interface. Everything seem to be working out right according to all settings both in audio/midi setup in mac-utlities, Logic and Protools. The problem is that I can't even run more than 8-9 audio tracks before cpu starts complaining! I really don't get it! I have updated to all the newest driver versions and my computer seems to find the digi002 with troubles at all..When I run Logic the same error always occurs: conlfict between Logic and external device! Midi and audio can't syncronize! I have also tried with another firewire cable to check on cableconnection between computer and interface, but it is still the same! I'm about to throw this piece of s... out my window! I didn't have any of these problems the G5 I had before! Other people I have talked with havn't had any problems with their macbook pro and running Logic so far...

Something isn't right in the DIgi kitchen. This comment has come up several times this week, mainly from Mbox owners, but also 002 users. I can't remember what version of Logic other people are using who are having problems, but I wonder if it's something with version 7.2.2 - the latest release. Have you got an older version you can go back to and see if that clears it? If you can get back to 7.2.1 have a go and let us know how you get on, it could answer a lot of problems for people out there in your situation.

  • Why Logic and not protools other than midi

why have users chosen Logic over protools...not a debate but just a little feedback, Thanks.

Not wishing to debate either. The following are my opinions based on having worked on both systems:
    - Logic's MIDI editing/arranging capabilities (and ease of access) far exceed those of PT. For me, PT's MIDI implementation is a welcome addition to more recent versions, but it's downright primitive compared to Logic, DP, Cubase, etc.
    - Many important MIDI manipulation functions can be carried out non-destructively and in real time, including velocity, gating, transposition, and delay.
    - Extensive notation capabilities that come close to those of dedicated notation programs such as Finale and Sibelius
    - Audio operations are, in some respects, much easier in Logic than PT. For example, if you have a 1-measure drum loop that you want to run down through an entire track, you need only to place the first instance of it in Logic's Arrange window. Turn loop on and voila, it's done. No copying/pasting required. I can think of other operations that, to me, are much more easily accomplished in Logic than PT but I'm trying to keep this reply brief.
    - Aliases of audio regions can be created, so changes to the original region are automatically reflected in all aliases (no sure if PT offers that).
    - Compatibility with a wide variety of audio file types with no file type conversion necessary.
    - User-definable key commands
    - Ability to group tracks in folders (to cut down on eye-clutter, and, to easily mute/solo groups of tracks). I know this can be accomplished with Groups in PT, but having worked on both systems, Logic's folders are more intuitive and easier to deal with.

  • Alternatives to virtual vtr slaving to logic

This isn't strictly a logic question but i've had helpful advice on the subject from this forum in the past.
I'm using logic pro and i'm slaving logic express on a 2nd computer to play quicktimes.Daniel Lerner recommended in the past a program called virtual vtr , the demo of which does exactly what i need it to do i.e. reads midi timecode and syncs my picture on computer 2 to logic running on my g5.Before i take the plunge with virtual vtr i was wondering if anyone knew of other alternatives.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ray

If you have a MIDI interface for each you could use MTC... you could also try MIDI over LAN but that probably wouldn't be as tight if you used the network for other things.

  • CAN I .....  Run Logic & ProTools on Same System

After hearing so many great things about Logic.... I'd love to give it a try. I currently have a PowerMac G5 (Power PC), running ProTools w/ the Digi 002. I'd like to know if I'm asking for problems by installing and running Logic Studio on the same system, retaining the ability to work in both?
If the install and run is OK for both, what would my options be for instrument interface for Logic.
I have the Digi 002 interface (is this compatible w/ ProTools only?)
I have a Presonus Digimax 8-channel interface and a couple other mic preamps all tied into the G5.....
can I just use any of these current inputs to record to Logic once installed? Does Logic come with it's own interface?
    Thanks, Chris

I run Logic and ProTools on the same system and have for years. I've run them at the same time. It does nothing to your system to have both installed and operating, whether at the same time or not.
The 002 can be used with Logic.
The DigiMax can be used with Logic.
In short, "yes" to everything you asked. It will all work.
