Sleep becomes Coma after keyboard update

Ever since I updated the keyboard firmware on my MacBook Pro, anytime the machine goes to sleep for more than a few minutes it lapses into a coma that requires a restart. No matter what keys I press, the machine is unresponsive. The only solution I have found is to hold down the power key until it reboots.
Is anyone else seeing this?

O.K., after some more tries I toggled all settings in the power management.
Even the settings are now exactly the same as before, this solved my problem!
Maybe this info can be helpful to other MAC users in the future...

  • IMac wakes from sleep by itself after security update 2010-001

Since installing last weeks security update 2010-001, my iMac has suddenly started waking up when it should be asleep. Now I've had Auto Sleep problems with my iMac before, but this problem of finding my iMac running when I left it asleep started immediately after the update. Now, one thing additional I've notice since the update is that I often see the message on the screen "Keyboard Connected" when it always was or should have been and I wonder if this is related to my iMac waking up. Anyone else seen this problem since the update or have any ideas?

Thanks to you both for suggestions, but I still have the same problem after trying them and as I said in my title this only started after the 2010-001 security update. As a test I put my iMac to sleep at 13:35 and it woke up by itself at 13:46. Here is the console log below, does it help at all in finding the root cause?

  • After keyboard update Aiport is Off

After I updated to MBP software update 1.1 on every startup my airport is off. When I enable it, it comes off again. Second time it stays on and takes long time to find my wireless network. Very annoying as prior to update I repaired permissions and did system maintenance. Anyone has similar problem.
    Take care
    Pedja

So I went down to the local Apple store hoping that the Genius Bar would be a useful resource. The guy tells me to reformat my Apple (I think he wants me to reformat it because it seems really slow, but that's another problem), but even I could have figured that out. So, I dig a little deeper and find a partial solution to the problem:
If you have an open wireless network, your airport should be fine. Connecting to these wireless access points should be no problem. If you run into problems, use the Diagnostics program listed below.
If you have a closed wireless network, use the "Assist Me..." button in System Preferences: Network, then use "Diagnostics..." to add another network to your system. (Note: Keep in mind you need to know the exact network name and WEP Password, but I think that's a given.)
    Hope this helps!

P.S. I know this is probably a fix that everyone knows, but I recently switched to a Mac after a 10 year hiatus, so I'm a little rusty. Sorry!

  • G4 sleep mode problem after latest update (10.5.8 build 9L30)

    Hi,
My 'old faithful' 17" G4 PowerBook 1.67GHz behaves differently after the latest SW update to 10.5.8 build 9L30:
When ordered to go to sleep mode (german: "Ruhezustand") either by Apple-menu command or closing the display does no longer result i slowly flashing white standby-LED but the LED remains dark and the PowerBook will not resume when the display is flipped open again or the power-button is pressed.
It can only be reactivated with <ctrl><apple><power-button>.
Before that, it behaved as expected i.e. resuming operation after flipping the display open again or pressing any keyboard key when in power save mode.
The behaviour is the same if operated without attached power supply.
    Any idea?
    Thanks in advance

  • My T400 won't stay in sleep or hibernate after some update

Howdy.........a couple of weeks ago I applied some updates to my T400 through Thinkvantage maybe......honestly I don't remember.  But it was recommended updates for my machine to things like Power Manager and Access Connections.
After I did that, I've run into some issues I did not have before and am very frustrated with!
The main one I think relates to Power Manager.  I'm at v3.6.4 now.  No idea what I was at before.  I like to have the machine set up to go into hibernate when I close the lid.  It does that.....but immediately after it resumes 99.9% of the time.  Same is true if I select 'hibernate' from the start logo.  I have idle timers to put it into sleep after so many minutes and hibernate after so many more.  But when it does, it immediately resumes.  So it's an endless cycle.
I've made sure that "Wake on" is off in the bios and in the network adapter settings.
The other issue I have is that after the 0.1% of the time that it stays in hibernate, when I come back to resume, my external monitor (I extend my desktop across the Thinkpad and an external monitor) is not recognized as what it is but instead is listed as "Generic PnP monitor" and is unusable because it just shows "Out of range" and "60Hz" on the monitor.  Only rebooting fixes that from what I can tell.
I've since tried reinstalling the monitor's driver, downloading and reinstalling Power Manager manually......no changes.  Has anyone else had this difficulty or just know how to fix it?  I'm going crazy with it.....
    Matt

    hey mplehning,
    welcome to the forums.
try uninstalling all ThinkVantage software and drivers from your system.
see if you're able to put your unit into sleep/ hibernate mode.
then install each software one by one and test after each installation on whether your unit can be place into sleep/hibernate mode.

  • Sleep problems (even after firmware update)

    Hello
Previously I was having problems where I would put my Macbook to sleep only to find it an hour later in my bag blazing hot with the fan working overtime.
The recent firmware update seems to have fixed that problem but it's been replaced by another. What happens now is when I get home and retrieve the Macbook from my bag and open the lid the hard disk makes it's familiar waking up sound but the screen doesn't come back on - and I'm not really sure if the computer has woken up or not - sounds like things are happening inside the metal but no beeps or burps when I randomly press keys / try to make things happen.
In the end I'm forced to hold down the start up button and force a shut down.
Anyone else having this? This doesn't seem to happen when I wake from sleep at any other time than when I take the computer from work to home which makes me think it's something to do with maybe my Bluetooth mouse or wireless network?
This is really frustrating and I'm sure forcing a shut down isn't doing my HD any favors.
    Can anyone help?
    Cheers
    Dom

I forgot to mention, DenverEagle, some more details.
My iMac would do the same thing: if it went to sleep, it either just shut down, or restarted, instead. If I turned off sleep, all was OK (for awhile. Eventually it had an episode where I turned it off and it would not start back up. Eventually, it did start back up [after about a day's rest]. That was when I took it in).
So it might be the same problem I had.
The software steps I was told to do, in attempt to resolve it, were:
    1) Delete my power settings preferences file, and;
    2) Reset the SMU, and;
    3) Reset the PRAM/NVRAM.
None helped, but they're easy, so you might try them. I don't think I they have any nasty side effects, but buyer beware.
I'm a little hazy on #1, and I can't find the tip online, but I think it just involved deleting the file:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    Number 2 is outlined here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301733
    Number 3 is outlined here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
I took my iMac to the Cherry Creek Apple store, and they fixed it really fast (it was 4 days, including a weekend, IIRC).

  • Geforce GTX 550 Ti doesn't resume from sleep mode sometimes after BIOS update

    Hi there,
I updated the BIOS of my main board Z68A GD65 (G3) yesterday to the latest version on the MSI site (E7681IMS.P80)  and I noticed that my PC doesn't always resume correctly from sleep mode now.
It seems that it works when I resume immediately, but after a nights rest the display remains black, although it looks like the PC itself is starting correctly (mouse, keyboard hdd etc)
Anyone know what this could be? Should i change a setting in the BIOS maybe?
    Marcel

I`ve updated BIOS but problem wasn`t solved.
Did someine else face with problem?
    Thanks.

  • Slow Sleep Wake-Up after Security Update 2014-002 MacBook Air

Hello! I have a 2013 August MacBook Air. I experienced the "screen goes black, hard restart" issue for many months until one of the updates cured that issues, thank goodness. I just updated with Security Update 2014-002 and just noticed it took about 20 seconds for my MacBook Air to wake-up from sleep mode. I was fearful it was back to the "black screen, no wake-up" issue with this update, however when it finally came back up I was relieved albeit very cautious now. Anyone else have this same issue?

    Hello macforme
If you are having issues with waking from sleep and slow startup times, then check out the article below. The main thing to try is to reset the SMC and NVRAM as a starting point sort the issue out.

  • File vault home folder becomes ejectable after QuickTime update

I have two user personalities on my Mac - an administrator and a normal user.
The normal user has an encrypted home directory using FileVault.
I just installed Apple's 9/9/08 QuickTime update and the updater seems to have destroyed a few things. I ran the update from inside the user personality, typing in the admin password.
After the restart, my home folder is now ejectable. That was the first curious sign.
Also, no browser other than Safari works any more. I also have Camino and Firefox on this machine and both can no longer be started. This seems to be related to the QuickTime updater and I assume it is related to running the updater from a non-admin account...
So how do I get my system back to normal? It is very puzzling and potentially dangerous having the "eject" button next to your home directory....
    Michael

looks like you have a number of problems. the best would be to restore your system from a backup to a point before the update. if you don't have a backup you should first of all start backing up. no idea what's wrong with your browsers but for the filevault I would first restart and see if the problem remains. if it does I would try turning filevault off/on. You need quite a bit of free space to do it - at least as much as your home directory holds and then some.

  • After maverick update mac won't come out of sleep

After I updated to Mavericks my macbook pro wont come out of sleep modes, I will close the screen or let the computer go to sleep from inactivity and i can see that its breathing but it wont come out of sleep mode and than requires a hard shutdown. It also takes a very long time to reboot and/or restart as it sits on the gray

Sadly, I had the issue resurface today. It went into standby/sleep mode while I was in a meeting (on battery power), and later I tried to wake it, and all I got was a black screen with a mouse cursor.
The keyboard brightness and volume keys on the keyboard were responsive (I could hear the audio level clicks as I changed it), but the visual overlay didn't show (where it shows the white speaker graphic with the bar of rectangles representing volume level). Also, the screen brightness keys did nothing.
I finally used Ctrl + Cmd + Power to force a restart. Luckily, my user account didn't get completely hosed like it did a couple weeks ago.
So, it looks like Migration Assistant isn't the culprit here. This is the system I just finished rebuilding. So it's either a bug in OS X/Mavericks, or it's due to an application I have running, or a configuration change I've made.
It seems to only happen when I'm on battery power, for what that's worth. I don't recall it ever happening when I'm plugged in. I have Power Nap disabled while on battery power, btw.
I'm going to enable SSH access so I can try to SSH in the next time this happens. Perhaps that will provide useful diagnostic info.
Anyone have any tips or suggestions?

  • How come that after an "update" Adobe acrobat become diasbled?

I use Adobe to copy web pages, email etc.
I have been using Firefox since version 2, and Adobe seems to work fine. since my update to 4 I have this problem: after an "update" of firefox, Adobe is disabled. After Adobe sends an update this function works again, until the next "update" of Firefox.
Why would a newer version have less possibility's then the old one?
    How to prevent this?

  • After System Update keyboard doesn't work -MacBook

Here is what happened and I was able to fix, someway... but not definetly.
I updated to Snow Leopard and everything was fine. After I launched System Update to finish the update, I installed a few ones then I rebooted.
At the login I realized that some of the keys didn't work anymore. Namely
    0 = P ] ; \ / ENTER
    those what I found.
With the help of the virtual keyboard I was able to take a look at the log and I noticed that the /System/Library/Extensions/AppleHIDKeyboard.kext was updated just before the last working configuration...
Luckily I had a bootable backup of the system before Snow Leopard, so I boot from the external USB drive and copied the old AppleHIDKeyboard.kext in place of the new one, that I saved with .bak extension.
I rebooted and the keyboard was properly working again.
I think my fix is "dirty". I experienced some slowdowns here and there and I found a log message stating:
com.apple.kextcache[271] AppleHIDKeyboard.kext does not declare a kernel dependency; using com.apple.kernel.6.0.
I'm wondering why the keyboard stopped working and if there is a better way to fix it.
    Any comment? (Please)

    <END OF LOGS>

It is never a good idea to mix system components like kext's from different OS X versions. If you right-click on for instance the AppleHIDKeyboard.kext & choose "Show contents" you will see that it is a bundle composed of many individual files. Many of these files contain information about files in other OS bundles. Similarly, other OS bundles may contain info about the files in this bundle. This tells the OS what +set of files+ it can & can't use for various functions.
IOW, kext's are not self-contained, functionally independent items. When you replace one with one from a different OS version, its info about other files usually won't be right. This can & very often does cause problems. Some are minor but others can cause progressively greater problems, eventually damaging the OS enough that it becomes inoperative.
So, your fix is almost certainly "dirty."
It's also not addressing the source of the problem. There is nothing wrong with Snow Leopard's AppleHIDKeyboard.kext file (version 1.2.0). Snow Leopard works perfectly well with my & thousands of other users' MacBooks. The cause of your problem could be many things, but this is not one of them. If you can accept that, there are several things you can do to find the cause, starting with running the Apple Hardware Test to see if it finds up any problems with your MacBook.

  • Mac book pro won't wake from sleep after Yosemite update

Since updating my laptop to Yosemite my MacBook hasnt woken from sleep
i can hear it turn on but the screen and keyboard don't light up
mac book is only 3 years old retina display

I think I may have found the fix for this. My MacBook Pro was dying in its sleep every time (after installing Snow Leopard), whether it went to sleep automatically or I used a Hot Corner. I went into System Preferences>Desktop & Screen Saver and changed the screen saver to Flurry, and it works now. I had had it set to a folder containing a single .pct file that I had created.
Good advice Mike! When in doubt check the ScreenSaver settings.
Definitely seems that it has a problem with that pic... In my case, selecting any images instead of the default setting (no screensaver) seems to have cured my non waking issue on my early Macbook Pro in Snow Leopard.
My original problem was that no amount of trackpad input woke it, but the space bar did. The space bar seemed to wake it up with the previous Screen Saver setting. Now trackpad wakes it up (even from total sleep as well as screen saver), too. Might be nice to know about if this is an intended 'feature' as a security trick. Otherwise I consider this a bug.
My vote is that it's a bug.

  • Mac Mini wont' Display Sleep after Yosemite Update

My Mac Mini is no longer going into Display Sleep. Instead I now see the Screen Saver.  I have checked System Preferences | Energy Saver and it is definitely set to Display Sleep after 10 minutes (The default). What is interesting is that if I try to change the Display Sleep time (e.g. to 1 hour), when I go back into Energy Saver, it is back to 10 minutes - this doesn't look right!  In fact none of the options (e.g. Wake on LAN) seem to stay changed.
This seemed to start after the update to Yosemite 10.10.1 a few days ago - but that might be coincidental. Until then Display Sleep had worked fine.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Nick
