SLEEP DISORDER!!!

Big problem here: Once my computer goes to sleep it turns completely off (crashes). This behavior is new. This started after installing the latest software update ("J2SE 5.0 Release 4")- may be a coincidence, may be not. I have repaired disk permissions, and have run Disk Warrior. I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and/or advice how to get my computer back to sleeping properly. It's a real hassle to turn off the computer every night, but I don't want it running 24/7.
Machine Name:iMac G5
Machine Model: PowerMac8,1
CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
Number Of CPUs: 1
CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 512 MB
Bus Speed: 600 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.2.2f2

Running the Apple Hardware Test sure shouldn't cause any more trouble. However, unless there is a complete failure of a component, like the logic board, it may not reveal much. It also won't report issues with components like the power inverter board (which sounds like it could be a factor).
I would give the AHT a run and if that doesn't reveal any errors, let us know. You might open the Console utility (in your /Applications/Utilities/ folder) after an incident and see if there is anything jumping out at you from the System.log. You might also try restarting and holding down on the "shift" key. This will startup the iBook in "safe" mode and prevent any non-Apple extensions from loading and stop any startup-items from launching. See if you have the same trouble like this and let us know how it goes.

  • Sleep Disorder (Energy Saver Prefs)

I tried in the hardware section about this, maybe I can get some help here:
My new Intel iMac seems to have a sleeping disorder. Does anyone out there have the Information Technology equivalent of Ambien CR?
I have my Energy Saver Preferences set to 22 minutes to put the system sleep and 15 minute to put the display to sleep. It doesn't seem to work.
Also, if I just put my iMac to sleep manually using the menu command in the Finder, it will go to sleep initially, but when I come back a few hours later it is on -- not sleeping. Am I going to have to shut this thing down whenever I'm not using it?
    1) I have checked the box "Put the hard drive to sleep whenever possible" in the the Sleep Pane of the Energy Saver System Preferences
    2) In the Options Pane of the Energy Saver System Preferences under Schedule there are NO active settings to start/wake my iMac.
    3) I have disconnected my external hard drives and my Wacom tablet to see if that made any difference. It did not. the only other peripheral is my Apple USB Modem, which I need to connect. I am not connected when I attempt to put the system to sleep
I have both put the computer to sleep and come back several hours later to see that it woke up. On another occasion I was reading on the sofa in the same room with the iMac and saw it wake up. When I saw it wake up there was no noticeably external noise or vibration in the house which might have caused it to wake up. It just woke up.
What is the point of even having an Energy Saver Preference if it doesn't work?
Does anyone have any more suggestions for troubleshooting this?
Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2 gig DDR

    Hi, Wet Baloney.
    1. Trash all the energy saver preferences:1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
    2. Open the Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration folder.
    3. Trash the following two files therein:• com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
    • com.apple.AutoWake.plist
You may be prompted for your Admin password when you trash these files.
Note that the second file is only extant if you have used the Schedule option to schedule startup, sleep, or shutdown.
    4. Empty the Trash.
    5. Launch System Preferences and reset the Energy Saver preferences accordingly.2. re: Modem:• In the Options tab of Energy Saver preferences, if "Wake when modem detects a ring" is selected (checked) deselect (uncheck) this option.
    • In the Print & Fax Preferences > Faxing tab, deselect "Receive faxes on this computer" if selected. With those options selected, I've seen my sleeping Macs wake up if a phone line was connected to the computer and a call came in on that line.
    Good luck!

  • 24" iMac Sleep disorder

My 24" won't sleep on it's own, I think it has to do with the network connection but it's hard to isolate what is causing it. It only seems to sleep on it's own after rebooting or after I enable then disable airport. This machine on a wired LAN so I don't use airport, I have disabled "wake for ethernet" with no luck . The problem first became noticable after the 10.4.8 Update.
I noticed others had similar problems any solutions yet?
    Thanks in advance
    -Josh
    24" iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2.16 GHz 2GB RAM 250 GB Internal 500 GB FW800 EXT

    Hi Josh,
Go back into system preferences > energy saver and check to make sure your settings are where you want them. Also repair permissions through disk utility > Macintosh HD
Lastly, I would go ahead and reset the SMC: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446 - the SMC deals with some power issues including wake and sleep cycles...
as a last resort you can always run the combo update: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateintel.html - this is the latest version and it may solve your problems...
    Good luck, Rick

  • IMac Sleep Disorder

My wife's iMac (fully updated and running 10.7.4) has two problems that just started yesterday..
    1.  After going to sleep, normally I would simply press any key on the keyboard to get to the login screen, but now pressing keyboard keys, moving the mouse, does nothing.  The computer stays sleeping and the screen fully black, though you can tell it's still running by the heat coming out of the top of the monitor.  At this point all I can do is hold down the power button until it restarts.
    2.  The second problem, also started happening at the very same time and is probably related.  When the computer is running if I select Apple | Sleep from the menu bar the screen goes about 90% black and the mouse pointer is still visible.  After about a minute the mouse pointer disappears and the screen goes completely black as it should.  But then I'm back to problem number (1.) above.
I've repaired permissions on the computer (there were quite a few that needed repairing) but that's all I've tried.  This didn't fix the problems.  She's using a wireless keyboard and wireless Magic mouse, both with brand new batteries.  Also, no changes at all have been made to her computer in months.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The update may have changed the Bluetooth preferences.
see > Wireless input devices: Bluetooth frequently asked questions
Then if that doesn't fix it,
Reset the SMC > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
and then perhaps even reset the PRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.

  • The Macbook with the sleep disorder.

I have had my macbook for about 2 years now. My macbook will not go to sleep. You know how you shut the lid or click sleep the screen would go black and the sleep light would pulsate? My macbook would only turn off the screen for a while and leave the light on (but not pulsating). Few seconds later, it makes a noise (sounds like the CD drive moving) and turns the display on. Yet, if I close the lid. This process continuously happens till I open the lid. Thanks for your help!

Did you install all firmware updates? If you did, did you install and enable InsomniaX? If not, call AppleCare.

  • MBP now exhibiting sleep disorder

    Hey all,
Just recently my MBP has started having a big problem with Sleep.
When put to Sleep, the machine invariably wakes up on it's own trying to eject an non-existant disc from the CD/DVD drive, then goes back to sleep, then wakes up trying to eject, etc. etc. It's a cycle that does not seem to stop once it starts.
The other weird aspect of this is that it also kills the iSight. Once this happens, the iSight will be locked "by another application" until a full shutdown happens (sometimes it takes two shutdowns to unlock it).
The only thing I can trace this to is Boot Camp and the latest firmware update. This did not happen before installing those items, it seems like others have had related issues with the new firmware, but not quite this configuration.
Is there anyway to roll back to the previous firmware (if I undo the Boot Camp partitioning)?

So I ultimately AppleCared my MBP in, and got it back the other day -- all problems solved.
However, they rolled back my firmware.
Booting to XP is gone, and trying to use Boot Camp Assistant gives me a message saying I need to update the firmware first. My Windows partition is still there, but I can't even run the Assistant to remove the partition and get that space back for OS X.
Now, if the report said something about this, I'd know what to do next... But all it says are top-line statements about the work (reseating a connector, etc.).
So now I have the option of updating my firmware to get Boot Camp again but potentially getting those problems back, or forgetting about the mess and being stuck with an pointless 5 GB partition lying around.

  • IPod Sleep Disorder

Ok, I have a 8 gig iPod touch. It is still under its 90 day warranty. I have a problem where not only dose it not charge, but when it is not connected to a dock or cable it still thinks its charging. As well as it automatically restarts when I turn it off because it thinks its plugged in! This iPod has had many problems and I have been able to fix them with help from Apple's online guides. This, However, is not in any guide I have found. I can no longer try anything you guys suggest to fix it that involves a computer because it dose not charge to connect to the computer at all.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Clayton Yocom

The only thing you can do without connecting to iTunes is a reset (press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears).
If that does not correct the problem, I'd suggest you contact AppleCare.
FYI, you have a *one year* warranty, not 90 days. The 90 days is the period for free phone support (one incident) - that's for non-hardware issues. You can still call them for hardware issues, or sumbit a service request online:

    Hope this helps...

  • Super Sleep Disorder?

Hey guys, been having a problem with my PB-G4 15" FW-800 that has gotten to the point of "do an archive and install and then send it in to us to repair if it happens again" with AppleCare, but I hate doing that (I mean, I want to fix the problem, not replace the entire O.S. [And yes, I know that I still keep all my data, had to do 2 archives for an earlier issue last year]).
Ok, so, ever since the 10.4.10 update (although not directly after, I know it was to some point, after it), my computer will occasionally put itself to sleep while plugged in and mostly charged (or fully charged). If I try to wake it up directly after, I will type in my password, then have 1-10 seconds to do stuff, and then back to sleep it goes. It does this (to my knowledge) indefinately until I force shut down while it waits for me to type in my password. Also, if I leave the computer alone for 15 minutes or greater, it lets me log back in as normal.
It happens regardless of what is connected.
I have reset the SMU, PRAM, done the apple hardware test off of the original disc (it passed the quick test), and replaced the power preference list.
My first guess to what is wrong is that it is overheating, but that doesn't quite make sense to me, as it happened today in an ambient no more than 75F, sitting on a flat wood desk, doing no more than browsing safari and changing the settings on a new airport. Yet, it doesn't happen (at least no more than usual) when doing the same but on a pillow top bed with an ambient of probably between 65 and 70F (who doesn't love reading blogs to sleep :D).
Also, the last time it happened, I shoved my hand underneath the laptop, and it was painful to touch after 3 or so seconds of touching it. this was directly under the center of the keyboard (or possibly a little left/right, but the depth is accurate).
To all you PB guru's out there, any idea what could be wrong?
P.s.: I may have forgotten to write down some details, and I will add them as soon as I can if you request.
P.p.s: Just as I was about to click 'Preview', it happened again, and the bottom of the laptop was barely "hot", although it was well above warm. And all I have open is safari and some widgets. Just an FYI, in about 70F ambient, the CPU is at 54C bottom, 51C top, and the PSU is 50C and it is currently trickle charging (orange at 97%).

    Hi Johan,
Have been having the same problems with my PB-G4 15" FW-800. I even made a post about this problem and was guided by helpfuls at this forum to do all that you tried. Nothing apparently worked. I even installed OS X again, but no matter what I did, it justs sleep on me while I am working, with nary a warning.
Two points of difference though: this keeps happening even with 10.4.9 with me, and 10.4.10 hasn't alleviated the problem, and 2) The problem is definitely temperature related, though not because of the Touchpad sensor. The values for the CPU, Battery, etc, are well within specs, though I noticed the PB goes to sleep immediately after there is a spike in any one of the temperatures. And it will keep doing that, till I unload Acrobat 8 from memory, or any HDD and CPU intensive operation that I happened to be carrying out before it went to sleep.
I have sent the PB back to Applecare, and hopefully they shall have an answer to these PB woes of mine. I shall keep you updated.

  • My iMac will not sleep when not in use.

The screen will go dark, but the disk will not sleep when not being used.  I have restored defaults and set energy settings to do so and still no luck.  Any thoughts?  Was this part of a current update?  It just started to not sleep a few weeks ago.

Thanks for your help regarding my computers sleep disorder.  I wanted you to know that after many hours of searching, I found that I had downloaded a program called Growl with my Belkin router when I installed it.  I removed this Growl program and finally my computer will sleep on it's own.  I wanted to give you this info just in case you come across this problem again.
    Thanks again!

  • Pixel graphic after sleep mode

by the way if you are interested a background check about mac service care where i life:
to start with - i life in beijing - china, and have unfortunately not made the good service experiences my friends from oversees report me and i can read in the community here and there. apple seems really to value their clients out of the region i deal with.
we buy at the apple flagship store in sanlitun (nice architecture - nice products but differnt service policy than elswhere in the world - that is my impression at least) all our office equipment the last 3-4 years (macbook air (battery inflated after just 3 years), mac bookpros 2*15"&17" (harddisc failure after ~5month no replacement but only repair with waiting time of ~2 weeks+), imacs 24.5" (tons of death pixels from on day one and getting worse - no replacement right away but waiting time of 3 weeks for repair - last year harddisk failure), 4*19" 4*27" (all have the dust issue behind the screen - very anoying special if you do lots of graphic), ipad, 4 iphones (one with switch on of bottom failure after 8 month - no exchange), mini mac, 2*mini server (complete disk failure after 1.5 years repair only - waiting time 2 weeks for arrival of repacement 1 week for repair)...all our mac purchases are bought with extended apple care warranties btw). we finally i believe we buy them because they match our esthetic style - not our quality requests.
just reacently had a bad info on appletv - does not run with airplay on the equipment they sold me all the years as i know yet despite their yes...
but ok these are some of my own problems and i need to get along with them.
    but here is the issue:
do you have any idea what this pixel graphic issue could be on my mac book pro. it occures frequent, randomly after sleep periods - thus i call it sleep disorder -  and can not be forced to appear for demo issues, thus not easy to show the super busy geniuses at the counter. the screen first is black- nothing at all shows. just if i move the mouse squares get visible as if i used a sponge to clean a dusty table. sometimes a complete section of the screen changes as well. once i cleaned long enough i find the insert window for the password and enter it and here we go as if nothing happened.
the issue appeared after the harddisk of my second last macbook pro broke just a couple of month old (4 or so) in jan 2012. as mentioned above i got a harddrive and some related wires changed. when i finally got again problems with the harddisk and wifi connection the flagship store replaced it after some not so kind words back and forth the macbook in december 2012.
brand new machine - i mirrored the system but after a couple of sleep modes the pixelgraphic appeared again.
no one at apple can help me - even the guys in brussels who were very supportive (macline shop - completely differnt service experience) could not give an answer. at that very same day though on the counter a client next to me had just the same problem - so far so good - it is not only me in the world:)
i dont know what it is and what it's caused from - but i had a couple of very unpleasant comments  when some clients saw the problem at presentations.
    cheers
    arnd
MacBook Pro (17-inch Late 2011), pixel graphic

I've had the same thing happen to my MacPro, although I haven't tried firefox, since upgrading form 10.6.5 to 10.6.6. Seems to happen more when waking from overnight sleep. The only thing I found to fix this is to restart the machine, very annoying.
My MacBook running 10.6.6 seems to work just fine.

  • Issue with Wacom Intuos tablet since installing Leopard

I have been having a problem with my Wacom Intuos 3 tablet ever since I loaded Leopard. Often on initial start, the tablet is not working. I have to shut down and start again (notice I didn't say Restart because that doesn't fix it). Often after waking from the Sleep mode the tablet is again not working.
Initially upon the Leopard install it wouldn't work at all and I loaded the most recent driver (and yes, it was flagged as the #1 reported problem at Wacom Support) but the performance has been sketchy since reinstalling the drivers.
Anyone know anything else about this? Thanks.

I tried what nerowolfe suggested but that did not resolve my issue. I did a few hours trial and error and this was what I posted on the Wacom forum:
I am having similar problems with Intuos 3, driver 6.0.5-2, Leopard and MacBook Pro. On boot up Intuos is working fine, but once computer goes to sleep and wakes up, Intuos is dead. Unplugging and plugging back into the same usb port will not resolve the problem. To fix it I either have to switch usb port or reboot the computer. The initial usb port will be unable to connect to the Intuos until either the computer has rebooted OR the computer has been put to sleep with the Intuos connected to another usb port. The usb port that has been made inoperable with Intuos after sleep IS operable with other devices such as iPod's and usb flash drives. To resolve this problem I have clean installed Leopard and freshly installed driver 6.0.5-2 but the problem remains.
After 2 hours of turning applications on and off, tweaking different settings I have finally found what causes my Intuos sleeping disorder. Bluetooth! Bluetooth on — sleeping disorder, Bluetooth off — NO sleeping disorder.
I have tried removing my paired devices and paired them freshly up again, but still, Bluetooth on — sleeping disorder.
I have not removed any Bluetooth .plist files and such, mainly cause I am a bit tired now and I do not know what to delete. So, if anyone reading this knows which Bluetooth files I can delete to reset Bluetooth as much as possible I would be very happy if sharing.
Hope this problem can be resolved.

  • 8220 battery life problem

    Hello everyone,
I've had my 8220 for almost exactly a year now, and for most of that time it's been great, albeit somewhat neutered by being on Vodafone pay-as-you-go. Then, sometime in November last year, I started to have problems with the battery life being quite short.
Now, I don't use my phone for much, it used to spend most of the day turned off (not complete off, just on standby) and would turn on twice a day to remind me to take some medication for a sleep disorder I have. I would have to recharge it about once a week, maybe once every 10 days. But since November I have to recharge it about once every 2 days, and that's without using it as more than an alarm clock!
I bought a new branded battery (from an Amazon UK marketplace seller, so I can't be 100% sure it's legit) and tried that, and nothing has changed. It loses a good 20-30% charge overnight, even if I use full power off. I thought at first it might be because the phone basically spent its life powering on and off without being on for very long, maybe that did something bad to the battery life over time; so now I turn the phone on when I get up and leave it that way all day until full power off before I go to sleep.
I don't have much installed, just Opera Mini and Empower Central+Task Manager (which I installed after the problems tarted to graph the battery usage)
    Things I've tried:
Going through all open programs and choosing 'close' - only default programs open (messenger, browser, home screen, phone, messages) and they just re-order themselves if I choose 'close' - no change
New battery (as detailed above, from Amazon UK marketplace) - no change
Charge using mains adapter instead of USB cable - no change
Charge to 100% using mains, pull battery, wait a couple of seconds, replace, continue charging - it still said it was 100% charged after the battery pull - no change
Upgraded OS (from .155 to .305) - no change
Does anyone have any more ideas I can try to get back the decent battery life I used to have?
    Is my phone faulty?
Any help or advice gratefully received!

  • G4 odor upon restart from sleep mode

My G4 functions fine but has recently developed an odor, upon just awakening from the sleep mode. The odor then dissipates and all computer functions are fine. Can anyone tell me the cause of this disorder? It only happens when awakening from sleep mode and not upon start-up.
    G4   Mac OS 9.2.x

    Can you describe the odor?
Have you looked to see if something has crawled in and made a home. Your mac is warm even when off and some critters like the warmth.
After all, the term "bug in the computer" came from an actual insect that crawled into one of the old vaccuum tube computers and got fried.

5 ways to fix MacBook /Pro/Air that won't wake up from sleep
Some MacBook, MacBook Pro or MacBook Air won't wake up from sleep. My MacBook Pro was one of them. I have been googling for two days, and I learnt different ways to fix the problem. Not all the MacBooks can be fixed by the same one solution. Here I collect five common ways to fix the waking up problem together (trying to save time for others). If your MacBook doesn't wake up from sleep, you may try and see which solution works for yours. If any solution works, you may leave a message including your MacBook model and the solution. It may help the others.
Solution 1.Select a Startup Disk in System Preferences
I learnt this solution from AJ's post. AJ said even in a single boot MacBook, a startup disk is rarely selected, and sometimes, this may stop MacBooks from waking up from sleep. Here is how to fix it:
Launch System Preferences from the Apple menu
    Click on Startup Disk
Select the startup disk of the OS you are using (click the single disk if there is only one)
    Solution 2.reset SMC
SMC stands for Mac's System Management Controller. Many strange behaviors are related to disorder SMC setting. By resetting SMC, you may fix sleep problem of your MacBook. Here is how to reset SMC of your MacBook.
Reset SMC of a MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro with an internal battery you should not remove on your own:
    Shutdown your MacBook/Pro/Air
    Connect the MagSafe power adapter
Press the (Left side)Shift+Control+Option keys and the Power button at the same time
Release all keys and the power button at the same time
Press the power button to turn on the MacBook/Pro/Air.
Reset SMC of a MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro with an battery you can remove:
    Shutdown your MacBook/Pro/Air
Disconnect the power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Install the battery back and connect the power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Solution 3.turn off Safe Sleep (hibernatemode)
Safe Sleep(or hibernatemode) was introduced in 2005. This Feature writes the content of MacBook's RAM onto the hard disk before you put the MacBook to sleep. Normally, when Macbook wake up, it does not need to read the hard disk for the RAM's content, because RAM is not turned off when Mac is sleeping. Safe Sleep is there just in case that the MacBook is short of power and turn itself off or you remove/change the battery. And that is why it is call SAFE sleep.
Sometimes, Safe sleep may cause MacBook can not wake up from sleep. You may try to turn it off, here is how:
    Launch Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
run pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
If you see "hibernatemode     3", you may go on the process, or else you need to stop and try other solution
    run sudo pmset hibernatemode 0
    Enter your admin password
This very solution fix my MacBook Pro. If it doesn't fix your problem, you can restore the safe sleep feature with running following command line in Terminal:
    sudo pmset hibernatemode 3
Solution 4.Switch system to another hard disk if you have two
If you have installed a second hard drive (or SSD) on your MacBook or MacBook Pro, and have waking up problem of the mac, you may try to install Mac OS X system on the other disk of the book.
I have removed my optical drive of my MacBook Pro, and installed a second hard drive. When I installed Lion on the second hard drive, my MacBook Pro could not wake up from sleep. Then I tried installing Lion on the original hard drive, the MacBook Pro did not have the problem.
    Solution 5.Reinstall system
Backup all you data, and try re-install the Mac OS X system. It always will be a solution to Mac problem.
I hope some solution above will work for your MacBook. If not, maybe you just have a broken Mac, it is time call Apple.

  • Sleep Button Issue

This is not a question but an issue which I found with my wife's iPhone 3G which I was able to resolve.
Her sleep button would not put the phone to sleep and if I pushed it, it would take photos even if I was not in camera mode. So, after looking through the discussions, I found out that I could do a soft reset by holding the sleep button and home buttons together for a few seconds until the Apple logo appears. Its working fine and my apps are still saved. Thanks for the tip even if it wasn't specifically what I was looking for, it still worked for me!

That is Funny to say Neurologic or arthrithic disorder. The button has gotten to the point that it now does not respond at all. so i cant shut it off, but luckly the Home Button activates the phone just like the Sleep / Wake button.
I am taking it to my local Apple Store today to see what they can do. I just hope they do not give me a Refurbished Phone. Since this one was only 1 week and 3 days old, I should get a New one.
Well thanks, as they say common sense isnt so common anymore. I should have just went to the store and not waist your time.
