Sleep grayed out in apple menu. MBPro stopped locking out.

I have a MBPro we've been labbing with to utilize profile manager. After I transitioned some of the login screen preferences from workgroup manager to profile manager the client system/MBPro no longer will lock out when the lid is closed even though it's enabled under the security settings. The MBPro no longer has any profiles/mdm on it. I also noticed in the apple menu the sleep function/command is grayed out so you cannot select that option to make it go to sleep at all. Pre Mavericks I would assume one could dump the com.apple.systempreferences.plist, however it appears to not be so easy in mavericks. Any ideas for a quick fix on this? Thank you.

Additional info. When pressing the power button to sleep the system this error comes up:
4/14/14 10:45:15.950 AM loginwindow[83]: ERROR | SleepSystem | IOPMSleepSystem returned error: -536870174
followed by this when selecting the sleep option. (the system does nothing when selecting sleep)
4/14/14 10:45:13.556 AM com.apple.CrashReporter.ACRRDaemonPlugin[161]: Error saving state to file:///Users/xxxxxxxxx/Library/Application%20Support/CrashReporter/Intervals_5 2E8832E-75AF-5D0D-A0A1-6B5D79AA525E.plist
4/14/14 10:45:15.950 AM loginwindow[83]: ERROR | SleepSystem | IOPMSleepSystem returned error: -536870174
Still digging into it.

  • Sleep only working via Apple Menu?

    Hi,
since today I have a very strange problem with my iMac: Sleep is only working through the apple menu. If I set up energy saver or press cmdshifteject, the computer won't sleep, only the display sleep will work (so the display switches off after the amount of time I set in energy saver, or if I press the keyboard shortcut the display turns off but the mac stays on)
Any ideas on this? It happens on all accounts, I already tried SMC and PRAM resets and disabled wake on lan and all sharings. I also trashed the PowerManagement.plist
It maybe helpful, that "pmset sleepnow" from terminal works fine. It seems that energy saver and the keyboard shortcut use another way to send the imac to sleep, which stopped working.
    ideas?

Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--
(username is your name or System Administrators name)
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
More on sleep, some of which you tried.......
This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is Apple doc.#303698 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update (10.6.4 Combo, etc.), disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse,Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
You can install it right over what you have now.
Many here have reported no wake from sleep or failure to sleep, running 10.6.3 on MacBooks, using Parallels and VMware. No solution yet.
    USER TIPS...
In System Preferences > Energy Saver is "Wake for network access" checked?
If so uncheck it and test.
Also, if you have an External Western Digital (WD) hard drive and have installed
WDDMService and WDSmartWareD on your Mac, it may not sleep. Fix is to un-install those....you don't need them to use the drive.

After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
One noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
    Check the printer queue!"

  • Apple Menu and iTunes locked up

iTunes was unresponsive and I couldn't use the Apple drop-down menu either. Force Quit showed no applications running. I could use the internet and got the information on resetting the MSC(?) by unplugging the power cord while holding the power button down, then replugging before releasing the power button. It worked great and everything runs fine.
Now I wonder what the problem really was and couldn't find anything in a search. Does anyone know if I have the beginnings of serious trouble? Or if I should do some sort of diagnostic testing?
    Thanks

    Hi Linda:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
What you did (I think) is to reset the SMC (system management controller). That will sometimes "fix" problems of the sort you experienced.
I would not be too concerned. You might run the hardware checker by booting from your software install DVD and hold down the "D" key.

  • Disable Sleep option under Apple Menu

    Hi,
Some users sometimes put my server to sleep by hitting the sleep button under the Apple menu. How can I disable this button?

The server in most installations is a very important resource. It just strikes me as a bad idea to allow anyone to use the server as a workstation, and risk taking down your whole cluster if it freezes up (or they press sleep, or do a restart).
If resources are scarce, it seems smarter to turn your server computer into a workstation, and run the Server software on an old junker. Most file server work is not compute-intensive, and does not require top-of-the-line compute power.
You can run Mac OS Server on computers as old as the beige G3 (with XpostFacto), or the Blue & White G3 directly. A used beige G3 can be had for less than US$100, if you do not already have one lying around.

Apple Store password change locks out older devices (iPod touch 3rd gen, etc.)

Just what do you mean? Only devices with iOS 7 and later have the Activation Lock that uses our Apple ID, Only the 5G can go to iOS 7 and higher.

If you forgot your screen-lock passcode then:

Then restore via iTunes. The iOS device will be erased. Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode if necessary to allow the restore.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:

  • I am trying to reinstall an admin password and got completely locked out. I can't get past the first log in

I am trying to reset my admin password.  I think my computer was tampered with. I signed out completely and now, I am locked out.  I can't get past a black screen. I'm unsure of my operating system but I've had laptop about 2 years.

If you boot from your install DVD and, after choosing language, go up to the Apple bar and select utilities, you can restore you admin and firmware psswds. You will these options there. Do not choose a firmware psswd if you do not need this, you may complicate your life, especially if you forget it.
I do not understand how you changed the psswd and why you cannot log in, though. Did you forget the new psswd or why? What do you mean by ‘was tampered with’?

  • ActiveSync mail/contacts/calendars removed after Active Directory account is locked out?

    Hey guys,
Wondering if anybody has seen an issue like this.  This is a new Exchange 2010 deployment (8+ CAS servers) and the devices are all iPhones/iPads running the latest version of iOS (7.1.2).  The CAS servers are behind a load-balancer.
Basically when a users' Active Directory account is Locked in AD (either manually or by entering the wrong password) their ActiveSync Contacts, Calendars and all Mail folders (except the Inbox strangely!) will be removed from the iOS device within a few hours.  So an account might get locked out at say 6pm, if left locked out by the next morning the ActiveSync account will still be setup on the device as normal, but everything is gone except the mail in the Inbox.  If a user has an iPad and iPhone both will be blanked.
The behaviour is similar to what is documented here - iOS: How to mitigate a full sync or reload of Exchange account data - however the Exchange servers are not issuing HTTP500 errors as we have captured logging during the window where the device blanks itself.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • I have a Power MAC G5 dual 2ghz that has a peculiar problem.  The monitor will not report until the machine is stopped and started 5 or 6 times.  Once booted it will restart without problem if done so from the apple menu.  Swapped out all hardware

My Power MAC G5 has a peculiar problem.  The monitor fails to report until the machine is started and shut down 5 or 6 times.  Once it has booted it can be restarted without incident from the Apple menu.  I have swapped out all of the hardware.  Monitor, Memmory,Video Card and reset the PRAM.  After resetting the PRAM it booted on the first attempt and I thought it was solved.  But the next day it was back to starting and stopping until the Monitor came on.  Does anyone have a suggestion?  Thanks

It could be a bad PRAM battery corrupting your PRAM.  Typically when I have monitor issues on startup it is a bad PRAM battery.

If you have a digital multimeter you can check the condition of your present battery.  It should read at least 3.2V if it is the 3.6V half-AA battery type.  A new battery provides 3.67 Volts DC. A bad battery provides under 3.2 Volts DC.  Ideally this should be measured while the battery is under load; added recommendation from Hans777:
    >I have recently found out that an exhausted battery will still indicate >3.6 V with a high internal resistance VM.
    >
    >Checking incircuit: powercord disconnected press PMU reset button for >about 5 sec before measuring.
    >
    >Checking outside: load the battery with a 1500 Ohm resistor when measuring.
Alternatively, test the battery while it is still in the computer.
If the battery is more than 5 years old, especially if you totally disconnect the computer from the power regularly, or have left it unplugged for several months at one time, it is likely the battery is dead.
Sometimes you have to do a more intensive reset of hardware management:

MacBook Pro won't stay asleep with external monitor attached.  When sleep is selected from the Apple menu the computer will go to sleep only to continually wake up...go back to sleep...wake up...etc. every few seconds.  This only happens when using the external monitor. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Mine does that too. The worst thing is when it goes to sleep, then wakes up and keeps running while the lid is closed and it is wrapped up in a case. I am afraid when the hot weather comes it is going to burn up. I am hoping Apple fixes it in the software or they may have a melted MBP to replace.
Then when I open the lid it is crashed running at fill tilt, pumping out heat to beat the band. I am forced to hold the button down and reboot.
I wiped my hard disk and reinstalled my OS, but it didn't help. I reversed my OS to 10.5.0 and it solved the DVI problem but still won't sleep. This post will probably be deleted by Apple, they did it a few days ago. I just don't know what to do, and I consider myself a real Apple expert. Just hoping you realize you are not the only one.
