Sleep, hibernate or off?

Recently bought a T61, and so far everything seems to work well. Unlike the complaints I saw on various forums, Lenovo seems to be very efficient in product build-up and delivery (built my T61 on 12/28, and it was shipped on 12/31, received on 1/2). In order to take good care of my new laptop, I am wondering when the laptop is not in use, is it good to put it to sleep, hibernate or just turn it off? Thanks!

Hello,
In sleep mode, the computer powers down all of the components it can, slows down the rest and saves the state of the system (documents, running programs and so forth) in memory.  This allows it to resume very quickly, at the expense of continuing to use a trickle of current to power things.  If the power level becomes critical while in sleep mode, the computer goes into hibernation.
In hibernation mode, the computer saves the state of the system to disk and powers down the system.  When power is re-applied, the system loads the machine state from the hibernation file on the disk.  This allows the applicatins and programs you were using after a longer period of time, but is slower to resume operation then sleep mode.
Here are a couple of articles from Microsoft's web site that explain things in more detail:
Turn off a computer:  Frequently Asked Questions
Windows Vista Power Management (blog entry)
From looking at the first link, Microsoft seems to recommend sleep mode for most computer usage scenarios, but if you are planning on not using the computer for more than a day then you might want to go with hibernation mode.

  • Sleep/Hibernate/Off ?

    Hi,
I'm new to macs and am slowly finding my away around my new macbook, but, could someone please explain the the differences between sleep, hibernate, and off, to me?
So far I've just been turning it off between uses, (I've not had a choice on pc's before) - should I just be letting it sleep or something?
I'm using it for a few hours in the evenings, not all day.
    Thanks
    Macbook 1.83Ghz 1GB, iPod Nano, iPod 3G   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

What happens when the computer goes to sleep (not just into idle mode or display sleep)?
    On all computers:
The microprocessor goes into a low-power mode
Video output is turned off, and the connected display may turn off as well, or enter its own idle state
    Apple-supplied hard disks spin down
Third-party hard disks may spin down
    On PowerBooks and iBooks:
The Ethernet port turns off (see Note below)
Expansion card slots (such as PCMCIA) turn off
The built-in modem turns off (see Note below)
An AirPort card, if present, turns off (see Note below)
The ADB or USB connection only responds to the power key on an external keyboard (see Tip below)
The optical media drive spins down
Audio input and output turns off
Keyboard illumination, if a feature of your portable computer, turns off
During Safe Sleep (hibernate) the current state of the computer is saved on the hard drive, including items such as desktop settings, open applications, and work in progress. This prevents any information being lost if the computer is completely shut down during sleep, which could occur if the battery runs. When the system is restarted a progress bar indicates the original state is being restored.
The above is taken from several Apple documents.<//i>
By default when you close the lid the computer goes into normal sleep mode. If the computer is shaken or suddenly moved (and has the Sudden Motion Sensor) it will automatically go into Safe Sleep (hibernation) mode and spin down the hard drive to prevent it from being damaged.
You can change the behavior of closing the lid from normal sleep to Safe Sleep by changing one of the power manager settings, but this requires using the Terminal application. You can also "force" the computer into Safe Sleep by removing the A/C power and then removing the battery for several seconds which will cause the computer to automatically switch from normal sleep to Safe Sleep mode.

  • I have a mini mac that when in sleep or log off gets lost.

I Never tried this in 10 or 15 years. Now is a good as a time as ever.
I have a mini mac, nice little guy or gal if you are a girl.
When I put in on log out and it sits for a while sometimes a long time sometimes for a short time.
long time all day, short time 30 minutes or less.
The little rainbow circle comes out and that's it gang. It needs rebooting.
Is there something that can change it to waking up like I do. Alert !!!
    Well, that's it.

    Hi Jim,
See if it's related to this...
It also seems to be related to later OSX versions, like 10.8.x & 10.9.x
The 2012 macs (and later apparently) (also later OSX versions on earlier Macs can do it also), not waking normally from sleep after hours being in sleep. (noted here ...

The sleepimage file still reappears even if never slept. Delete it (hibernate off, etc) - within minutes its back.

  • System locks up coming out of sleep/hibernate

    Hi,
We have three Latitude E6430 notebooks running Windows 7 Enterprise x64. This is a licensed copy from MS and has not been customized in anyway by us. All three systems have the exact same configuration. Two of these systems lock up when we try to resume
from sleep or hibernation. The logon prompt comes up but we are unable to enter the password or move the pointer around. The system has to be hard rebooted to get it functioning again. The third notebook that does not exhibit this issue has graphics driver
v8.15.10.2639 but those same drivers do not resolve the issue on these two systems. We have tried updating the BIOS, chipset and graphics drivers but issue persists. Tried different graphics driver versions (from Dell support site and Intel) but no go. Dell
sent motherboard and processor replacement for one of the systems but issue was not resolved. For testing, Dell tech support asked their engineer to install the OEM copy supplied by Dell (Windows 7 Professional x64) and the issue was not noticed. We then
installed our Enterprise copy and issue's immediately back again.
Issue occurs irrespective of how sleep/hibernate is triggered: manual, automatic (timed) or lid closure.
Issue occurs irrespective of power source, AC power or only battery.
Issue occurs even if lid close action is set to 'Turn Off Display' only.
However, if hibernation is disabled the issue does not occur. System could be in sleep or with only the display turned off for hours and it still responds normally after waking up as long as hibernate is disabled.
    All three systems have,
Intel Core i7-3540M Processor (Dual Core, 4M Cache, 3.0 GHz, w/HD Graphics 4000)
    8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHz DDR3L Memory
    500GB Solid State Hybrid Drive
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks, Muggy

    Hi,
After waking form hiberbation, have you tried to unplug the mouse then re-plug it back in for a test. Meanwhile keep the latest drivers for the the mouse and keyboard.
And untick this option: Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power in device manager\mouse and keyboard device\properties\power management.
Please also perform a memory test and hard disk test with instructions in the following links

  • X200 cannot sleep/hibernate after WWAN has been used

Since upgrading to Windows 7 I experience problem using Sleep or Hibernate.
If I have been using WWAN (the Ericsson card) the computer will not Sleep or Hibernate afterwards (sometimes it will work, maybe 1 out of 10 times). The computer will start preparing for Sleep/Hibernate and will switch off the screen. But it never finished (caps lock will not work, but the HD LED can be seen blinking every 3 second or so) and will stay on until the battery is drained or a hard reset is performed.
It was working ok in the beginning after installing Window 7, but stopped working somes in june/juli this year.

HI, thanks, but I know I can set a new password. I just wanted to get my old one back cos I have used it a long time & can therefore remember it.

  • HP 15t j000 will not wake from sleep/hibernate Windows 8,8.1,10

HP 15t j000 will not wake from sleep/hibernate Windows 8,8.1,10. I have to restart. I've searched high and low for answer to this. I've seen videos, played with power settings.  I hoped each Windows system upgrade would fix the problem. No go. Anyone with any ideas?

Hi , Thank you for your query.  I understand that after upgrading to Windows 10, it will not wake from sleep mode unless you restart. The first step I would try is to disable "Hybrid Boot' or "Hybrid Shutdown.  This can be done by turning off "Fast Startup" Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 10 Next try running the "Update Troubleshooter"  Windows Update troubleshooter. Once launched, it should show a screen like this. Use the second option "Background Intelligent Transfer Service", it should lead to a force update of 'Windows Updates' that may not be automatically being applied, that could fix some of these issues.

What are you guys doing about this? At least provide some information on whether you have even taken notice to this problem or not! There won't be a point of a fix once the hard-disk is gone because of all the hard resets.

It's not just HP,  but Dell too.   Suggest switching the power options settings to "never" and always shutting down Windows before closing the lid.  PITA,  but avoids all those 'hard stops' doing any damage. I've partly fixed the issue on my machine by updating all the drivers to very latest,  shutting down and rebooting,  then shutting down,  removing the battery pack,  holding down the power button for at least 30 seconds,  then replacing the battery and booting up as usual.   So far,  this has fixed the "sleep" problem,  but HIbernate is still not working.     I've a Dell machine,  but a lot of the Hardware is common to the HP laptops - Intel Video etc. Steve

  • X201s not properly going to sleep / hibernate / shutdown mode and instead gets piping hot

My 3.5 year old X201s that has been working like a charm has developed a nasty problem:
None of the "normal" methods to get the system to "turn off" seems to be working any longer. The OS (Win7Pro-32bit) does its normal thing during  sleep / hibernate / shutdown, the screen eventually goes blank but the system never goes into the appropriate powered down state. The area under the CPU becomes hot and the system is totally unresponsive to Fn button, mouse button, lid opening, power button press.
    More specifically:
"Start->Shutdown" or single Power button press results in battery LED solidly lit, no "beep". Systemis  unresponsive to subsequent normal power on.
"Fn+F4 Sleep" or Close Lid  results in Battery and Moon LED solidly lit, single "beep". System is unresponsive to any subsequent normal wakeup attempts.
"Fn+F4 Hibernate" results in Battery and Power and LED solidly lit, moon blinking, no "beep". System is unresponsive to any subsequent normal wakeup attempts.
In all cases, I have to press and hold the power button for 5 sec (at which point all LEDs turn off as they should) to then be able to normally boot the system again. Upon booting, Windows does not complain of any improper shutdown and boots normally from scratch (sleep/shutdown scenario) and in the hibernate scenario, resumes properly.
I have the latest BIOS and Thinkvantage updates installed, have turned off Blutooth, disabled "always-on USB" , have also uninstalled Thinkvantage Power Manager but have not seen any change.
Reading some of the other threads on here about aging thermal paste and hot running CPUs, could this have fried some of my Power management circuitry?
    Could an overheated
Any insight would be much appreciated!

    Some follow-up:
    - I applied the Intel ME firmware update 6.1.32.1076, see
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-77175
but this did not fix anything.
    - Reinstalled latest Lenovo Power Manager and driver, - no luck.
    - Recovered original factory image, - still the same ill-behavior.
Has anyone had experience with sending out of warranty laptops to Lenovo for repair (likely motherboard replacement)?

  • Satellite Pro A210 PSAFHE - Windows 7 - freezes after sleep/hibernate

I have a Satellite Pro A210 PSAFHE running dual boot Windows XP/7
Using Windows 7 - either 32 or 64 - the system always freezes after sleep/hibernate.
This never happens with XP which sleeps and hibernates OK..
There are no drivers at all for this notebook on the site http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=EU
I like System 7 and use it on my other computers but without sleep/hibernate I will revert to XP.

    Hi
    > There are no drivers at all for this notebook on the site http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=EU
Sorry mate but you are wrong.
All Win 7 drivers for Satellite Pro A210 are released on the Toshiba European driver page I recommend checking it again
Since this issue does not appear using Win XP, I can say for sure that this has nothing to do with the hardware but its a software related issue
I recommend updating the graphic card driver
Furthermore there is a new BIOS for Sat Pro A210 PSAFHEits v2.0
Check if you are using the latest version

  • Which is better for computer and program... sleep or turn off?

When not using, which is better for the program, sleep or turn off the computer and any explanations are welcome...

I advise shutting down rather than sleep. A good shut down often clears up nascent problems, and of course you're saving electricity by not running your machine and also saving those precious MTBF hours on all the mechanical components. Think of the hours it would sleep vs. the number of hours you actually use the machine. Even though sleep consumes less electricity, it still consumes.

  • IPhone 3GS Sleep button falling off

Recently i went to press my sleep button and it was dodgy and didnt put my iphone to sleep and when i put my iphone down on my desk the sleep button fell off please can you help me what to do?

The sleep/wake/power button is very important. If it "fell off" then you must have a crack or bad defect in the case in that area. Glue, such as Super Glue can work wonders if you know what you are doing. If you are not careful with such strong glue you can also do much worse damage to the iPhone. Until you get this repaired, or better yet buy a new phone, you can use Assistive Touch for perfect Virtual Button. Tap Settings App > General > Accessibility > Assistive Touch > ON > tap the new small white screen button > Device > Lock. You can even use this button to turn the iPhone OFF. To turn the iPhone ON, connect to power ie, charger or USB of computer.

  • Ethernet not connecting when resuming from sleep/hibernate

I use my mac (Win7) in clamshell mode quite often, and I leave the cables connected (ethernet, power, display, etc). I have noticed since installing the 3.0 Boot Camp drivers that the ethernet connection is not recognized after resuming from sleep/hibernate. I need to disconnect the cable and re-plug it in for the system to recognize the network. Anyone else seeing this?

Look through Power Options for sleep and network. There should be sleep, low power, etc. And if possible, maybe you can manually update drivers from the vendor (not Apple). And if Windows or your update doesn't work as well, then you can just as easy use Device Manager and "rollback" the last driver upgrade - a great feature. Also, use those Create/Restore Check Points.
I use to have trouble, got tired of having this issue, and bought a new modem to replace my 5 yr old model. Problem gone. Same can happen regarding routers, sometimes a firmware update, but I had one router that had been superceeded by 4th generation and no firmware patch anymore.

  • X230 hangs when resuming from sleep/hibernate

Sometimes my x230 becomes unresponsive after resuming from sleep/hibernate.
The "system" process would take up one core (25%) and the hard disk activity light would stay on all the time. I could switch between applications that were already started, but I couldn't start any new applications, and giving the currently running applications any keyboard or mouse input, would put them in the "not responding" state.
The only way I found to get out of this state is to do a cold shut-down... holding on the power button for 5 sec.
This hang would happen quite often... about 3-4 out of 10 resumes... very annoying that I would lose the state of all my open applications.
I did a system update to the latest driver versions, including a bios update. That seemed to fix the problem... at least for a while... Then it started happening again, althouh less frequently... but it still happens.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

    hi Vicentiu,
Thanks for posting your result. Based from your results, its great to hear that performance of your machine has improved quite a bit. Although that was not what we were look for
Anyhow, in this case could you possibly update the "Intel Management Engine" as there a case i worked with not long ago on an x220 which had similar porblems. By updating the BIOS and Intel Management Firmware did the trick.
It worth the try though. The link for the update can be found below.

Do let me know how it goes.

In my case of this symptom, I think there is a correlation with updating, so if I can remember to, I may try preventing network connections too.  I have also threatened to try using Scheduling to prevent unattended updating.  That was for Surface
RT which explicitly does not allow a simpler GPO solution.  However, now that I have seen the same problem happen on Surface Pro I guess I should at least try the GPO solution on it.  Thanks for the reminder.   ; )
