Sleep in Forte!
Hi,
Is there any way to put something similar to 'sleep' in
C in Forte tool code to sleep for certain duration of time
WITHOUT using event loop?
thanks in advance,
-Nimesh.
In the 2E release there is a Sleep method on OperatingSystem, it
should be documented in the 2.0 addendum doc. This will put
the entire process to sleep for a specified number of milliseconds.

MBP Sleep or Shutdown which should I be choosing?
I recently read a section of the book OSX Missing Manual and it mentioned that cycling a Macs power was rarely required. Being a recent convert from the world of Windows I have always powered off my laptop at the end of the day and powered it on again when needed and I have been doing the same with my MBP.
Is it really advisable to put my MBP to sleep rather than shutting down even if I will be transporting the MBP to and from the office?A couple of things to consider:
1) Regardless of how great OS X is there are memory leaks and problems with apps. Eventually a reboot is a good thing. But OS X is great that way in that it will run for weeks before a reboot might even help.
2) For me I go from just a laptop at home to plugging in a 20" Dell flat screen and a keyboard/mouse at work. My MacBookPro doesn't always wake up from sleep nicely in this configuration. Sometimes it has presented me with a blue screen but no log in prompt. One time I even had to power down then reboot to get anywhere. I've never had this happen just as a laptop waking from sleep.
3) If you plan to travel on an airplane I would HIGHLY recommend a shutdown. Here is way. Most airplane cabins are pressurized and present no problems to humans or computers. However a friend of mine was on a flight that experienced pressurization difficulties. For a short time the cabin rose to almost 10,000 feet before the pilots got it under control. Several elderly people passed out etc. His Window XP laptop had just been put to sleep but something woke it up and started the disk spinning. Disk heads are designed to "fly" over the disk on a micro-cushon of air. At 10,000 feet the air was too thin and the head could not fly. It scraped the disk and tore the heads off the drive. (Rare occurance yes... Do I recommend not using a laptop on a plane while in flight, absolutely not, but when you are done shut it down that way you know for sure your disk is not spinning accidentally while you are boarding, loading and unloading).
This is also a warning for private pilots. I fly regularly and most aircraft I have access to will do 12,000 to 15,000 feet but are not pressurized so I carry O2. But I had a girl along for a ride from Fort Collins to Wenatchee Washington one time who at 12,000 feet was bored and wanted to use her laptop. I caught her just in time before she ran the risk of destroying it.
Anyway these are just my thoughts. I love the concept of sleep but sort of don't trust it fully. That's probably my Windows paranoia coming out.

JSObject missing in Forte 1.3
Hello All,
Very tired at the moment, so hoping someone can kickstart my brain, preferably with an answer to a problem that I'd probably be able to solve given 10 hours of sleep...
Using the community version of Forte 1.3. Just built an applet (extending java.awt.Applet) and was trying to access the JSObject (netscape.javascript.JSObject). Lo and behold my IDE has no access to JSObject...
import netscape.javascript.JSObject;
yields "package netscape.javascript does not exist" error.
Tried to figure out why the package is not included in the Forte setup, considering it's such a common package. Failing that I tried to go find the package and class files on the web, hoping to manually 'build' them into my project, but couldn't do that either.
Forte can't even find the package 'netscape' for that matter.
Thanks for any help.Thank you (dekassegui) for the assistance. You earned the 3 juicy duke dollars.
If you have another moment, how did you find that out (that the netscape package was tucked in the JAWS.jar archive?) The Forte help system, as far as I could find, had no info on that. Was there some other source, such as some general JSDK 1.3+ docs/info. Please direct me there if possible.
Thanks much. -
Re: PanedWindow in Forte'
Forgive me if I'm not replying to this correctly. I just got subscribed
and I can't believe this question popped up. I'm involved in the building
of a new imaging system using the Forte development environment. We are
currently in the prototyping stage and wanted to do just what you are
describing, "the browser" type window. Frames are pretty easy to do in
Forte. This may not be the best way, but it works.
We created a window which has 3 widgets panel one, panel two, and a
rectangle. The panels were to be parents of any "real windows" that you
wanted in you panes, like an outliner. The rectangle can be selected and
moved. We size all three explicitly. The main window has a startup
method and we send it parameters for positioning and determining if this
particular frame setup will be a horizontal type or a vertical type. The
frame control window has a resize children method which just re-sizes the
two panels based upon the position of the slider (rectangle). The neat
thing is that you can map one or both of your panels to another frame
control iff you set your startup parameters correctly. It seems pretty
crude but it takes very little code and you can nest the frame controls to
produce as many window panes as you desire. Getting around Forte's
geometry management was the toughest part, we wanted to take advantage of
the gridfields and automatic movement of widgets. However, we couldn't get
it to work. Might just be us, we are very new to the tool.

Hi,
I would like to build a desktop similar to the Partition Workshop one,
that is based on a form with due (or more) resizeable areas.
One other example are the Netscape Frames.
I know that this kind of window is called PanedWindow in the Motif
toolkit.
Do you have any suggestions to do this in Forte'?
Thank you in advance

To create a variant, you need to instantiate a variant object and set
its value. Forte supports many variant classes mapping to their OLE
variant types, and VariantInteger is one of those. You can try the
following:
myVInt : VariantInteger = new;
myVInt.Value = 1;
CrystalReport1.Destination = myVint
Hope this helps.

Can anyone help me?
I am trying to use a Crystal OCX to create reports. I do not want to
view the report I want to send it directly to the printer. I believe
I
have located how the code needs to read but, crystal expects a variant
and I am unable to locate how to create a variant.
Example of the code:
CrystalReport1.Destination = 1;
The 1 is the variant.

New iMac wakes from sleep sluggishly and requires password despite preference setting
My new iMac (Core i7) wakes from sleep very sluggishly and it requires a password despite the fact that I have de-selected this option in Preferences.
I have a new iMac. I used Migration Assistant to move everything from my older Mac Pro, which was running Lion. Under the Secucrity settings in Preferences, I de-selected "Require Password."
I use a bluetooth mouse and wireless keyboard. Typically I click the mouse to wake up my Mac. The screen comes to life and the cursor moves with the mouse, but...how can I explain this? When I move the mouse in this situation, the cursor paints a gray swath over the desktop screen. It looks like I am using a paint program.
After clicking the mouse repeatedly the computer becomes responsive and the password entry screen appears--most of the time. I have tried to set it up so a password is not required, but usually I get this screen. SOMETIMES, it behaves correctly--say one-fourth of the time.
Another problem... When I shut the iMac off and then back on, it does not always link to my Apple bluetooth mouse. I have to connect a USB mouse and re-link the wireless mouse.
I wonder if this is a software/OS issue. My old Mac Pro had similar wake-up issues, and I wonder if Migration Assistant transferred them to my new machine.
Your thoughts and great ideas are appreciated.

Fort Collins, COI too am having trouble with my bluetooth mouse after upgrading to 10.7.2 and the associated iOS 5 upgrades. The mouse keeps losing its connection. I've turned bluetooth off, trashed the preferences, rebooted and repaired both the keyboard and mouse but the mouse keeping dropping out. Keyboard seems ok. Anyone have any ideas?

Hi Forte Users.
I am trying to write a Forte service that will control background batch
style jobs.
I want an Environment Visible non replicated service that will listen out
for events from clients and start tasks in other partitions to carry out
long batch type processing.
I want to use a reference partition so that several applications can have
access to these batch jobs.
I'm storing the taskdesc's of the batch tasks in an array on the batch
control service, I can then make a list of batch jobs running available to
client applications. I want these applications to be able to cancel the
batch jobs.
My problem is cancelling jobs in partitions that are load balanced.
I've found a TechNote (11046) that says "Currently, there is no way to
cancel a task on a load balanced partition"
I am considering having the batch control service write to files when a
batch job is cancelled and having the load balanced services reading these
files every so often to see if they should stop processing.
Is there a better way of doing this ?
How do other people handle large background processing jobs?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Imac running slow after sleep mode
not sure what's going on but i can't use sleep mode on my imac 2010 sl
whenever it wakes from sleep mode it is so slow, even typing an email i'll get the flywheel coming up and a delay in the words i'm typing. every application is slow, i have to a restart for it to start working normally again.
my wife has the same problem with her macbook pro of similar vintage and os.
anyone else have this problem and know a solution?I too have been noticing problems in slow behavior after sleep mode. It has gotten so bad I have been restarting it regularly or shutting down much more regularly. It behaves almost like normal after a re-start.
It is almost like the hard drive is failing? Last time this happened I put a new HD in. I am usually running a large number of different programs, always multi-tasking, which has been a mac fortie. Seems worse with the last few updates. My I mac is 24" imac 2008 model. replaced drive just before apple care expired.

Mbp running slow after sleep mode
My MBP runs extremely slow after sleep mode (closing lid). It seems like Safari will take up much RAM. But I use a memory freer which supposedly should solve the problem. So after all I am not sure what is the real cause and what could solve this.
BTW it runs normally after a reboot.
Mine is a mbp 13" refurb purchased in March, 2012.

My Macbook Pro started freezing all the time & going to sleep on its own for no reason
I've been having trouble for a few weeks with my computer freezing way too often for seemingly no reason - I'm using it exactly the same way I always have with no problems, and even actively trying to have less applications open (which seems to have no effect). I can't always load simple webpages without it freezing and giving me the color wheel and it's just MUCH slower in general. It is seriously making it difficult to use my computer for work or for fun...
It has also started going to sleep on its own - the screen will just go black (or sometimes BLUE) and the keyboard lights turn off, and the only way to get it to wake back up is to close the computer, wait, open it again and click or press a key. It doesn't respond to any keys/clicks until it has been closed and reopened.
It seems to overheat really easily lately as well - but it does not always overheat when it freezes.
SMC reset did not seem to have an effect. Activity Monitor doesn't show anything crazy, everything is pretty much 0% except Firefox around 7-12% as I'm typing this. 246 GB available on my hard drive so that doesn't seem to be the problem either. Right after restarting my computer it seems better but the problems quickly resurface...
I googled for help before posting this and someone had suggested running the command
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|find tok|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef
in Terminal, which they said "Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty." But mine gave this:

I don't know what that means or if that is useful info to help solve my problem? I just want to know what I can do to make my mac go back to normal!

I'm not sure when it began, but now my Macbook Air only shows a black background and a User Name and Password dialog box when I wake it from sleep. It used to show my desktop background blurred with my user name and icon displayed with only a text field for entering my password. I'm currently using Yosemite (OS X 10.10.1) and all updates have been done. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I know this isn't a real problem, just an annoyance since I couldn't find how to change it back in the System Preferences.
I just have to point out that after looking at a related post (https://discussions.apple.com/message/22661092#22661092), it brought to memory that my issue most certainly began happening after I added some DoD certificates to the keychain. This obviously has something to do with it, but it still leaves me wondering what actually causes this to happen. :/

Is there a way that iTunes can act as a Radio Alarm Clock?
I have found the radio station I enjoy listening to in the iTunes Radio List. Is there anyway iTunes (and my Mac) can be set to come-on from Sleep mode and start playing that Radio Station at specific times of the day?
Any App or plug-in that does that?
Many thanks
KevinTurning your Mac into a clock radio.
1. In iTunes create a playlist that contains just the radio station you want to wake up to.
2. Export the playlist (as .m3u works well). Get Info on your playlist file and look at the Open With entry to make sure it points to iTunes, VLC or some other app that will stream your station.
3. In iCal create an event entry at the time you want to wake up.
4. Right (or Control) click on your wakeup event and select Get Info.
5. For "alarm" select Open File.
6. Now under Open File there will be a place to add the file to open. It will probably be some default entry (like iCal). Click on it will allow you to select "other." Then use the file dialog to select your playlist file.
Your Mac will wake you up at the appointed time. You don't need to keep iCal running. If you want to put you Mac to sleep for the night then there is one more thing you need to do. Open System Preferences to Energy Saver and click on the Schedule button. Check Start up or wake and set the wake up time to slightly before your iCal alarm time.

Mac Mini repeatedly refuses to wake from sleep
Please to anyone I really need your help.
First let me preface you that I know my console log is incredibly long, and let me know if there is a way to make them more manageable and I will update.
Also let me know which other logs or screen shots or active programs I can provide
I have a 2011 2.5 ghz Mac mini i5 with AMD Radeon 6630M
I have customized this with a 256gb SSD and 2TB HDD as well as 16gb RAM.
I also have a Monoprice drawing tablet attached.
My keyboard and trackpad are bluetooth
I am running yosemite 10.10.1.
10.10 was installed with a clean install.
So here is the issue:
The computer was working perfectly, and then, I can't identify a specific time, it started to just occasionally refuse to wake up from sleep (monitor off, won't activate).
Interestingly it seems to have only started happening AFTER I purchased an apple TV which I use to mirror my screen for video playback. Prior to that I had two mac mini's (one hooked up to TV as a media center and one desktop). This configuration resulted in no freezing issues for a few months.
My parents wanted to get an apple desktop so I ended up giving them my mac mini media center and decided to try using an apple TV mirroring with my mac mini instead.
Now the computer seems to work perfectly fine for a day or two and then it just refuses to wake from sleep.
I do a hard reset and it boots up with no issue and everything works perfectly for a couple days (or less), then it just won't wake from sleep at all.
This can occur when still mirrored to apple TV, but also occurs when it is not.
Background programs tend to be: dropbox, google drive, evernote, flycut, Teamviewer, safari and google chrome
Additionally I have noticed that if the computer has been on for a couple days, when trying got mirror it becomes very choppy.
Activity monitor identifies no CPU or memory hogs. (can post if needed)
The console does seem to show A LOT of issues, but I can't make any sense of them, and I have tried searching google for what they might mean.

Is this related to the problem? What does it mean?
My 2010 27" iMac running Yosemite won't wake up from sleep. -
G4 Mac mini sporadic sleeps & crashes
My G4 mac mini has had a consistent problem across two OSs. Both in Tiger and now in Leopard my mac seems to kernel panic and shut down. I restart and again if any taxing job is undertaken it again fails. I have included my log files and if anyone is having the same problem or, better, knows a solution it would be greatly appreciated as it drives me crazy.

Two possible causes immediately come to mind, since you say the problem occurs with both Tiger and Leopard:
1) The leading cause of kernel panics is RAM. Has the RAM in this Mini been upgraded since it left the factory? Most RAM problems will not be detected by the Apple Hardware test. The most definitive test is to swap out the RAM. If the problem disappears, then the prior RAM was the cause.
2) Since you say this occurs during "taxing jobs", then overheating has to be considered. Be sure the mini has free access to room temperature air -- and that it is not sitting on other heat-producing equipment. Even so, its cooling ability may have been compromised over time by a build-up of dust or pet hair inside the Mini or on its vents. It is also possible that the thermal pad between the CPU and the heatsink is breaking down and causing poorer heat transfer.
If the problem is heat-related I would expect the fan to increase in speed and loudness before the crash. Are you hearing this? -
Lenovo SL510 suspend (S3 sleep) is not working
Hi all,
I bought a new Lenovo SL510 with T5870 2GHz CPU, 250GB HDD, no OS, (part No. NSLQ7MC). Installation of Ubuntu Karmic 32bit was without any problems, but I didn't get the suspend working. Hibernation works fine.
When I click sleep button (or echo -n mem > /sys/power/state), the screen backlight goes off, but graphics on LCD is still visible, after 10s fan goes to max and sleep LED is blinking wild. No further reaction to power button. Of course, poweroff works, when I hold for more then 2 sec. I suppose the sleep routine somehow hangs forever.
btw. I also tried with 32bit Suse Live CD, BIOS upgrade and 2.6.32 kernel, all with the same result.
Did someone get the sleep mode working on SL510?
Do you have 32 or 64bit Linux?
What is your SL510 hardware model?
Many thanks for your help, regards PetrBump
Any news on that issue??? I still haven't find any information on how to solve that

Color 1.0.2 and QT 7.4
I've read that QuickTime 7.4 works best with Color 1.0.2 and QuickTime 7.5 causes problems. If you're running FCP 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, how is it possible to run 7.4 QT with FCP? You can't right?
