Sleep issues and strange message in console

Hi all,
For the last month or so, the only way to sleep my Mac Pro is via the apple menu, it won´t sleep automatically as programmed by system preferences. I have read other posts, and the only solution seems to be the use of PleaseSleep, right?
I also have this console message every time I wake the computer or display from sleep: "loginwindow[48]: in pamsmauthenticate(): Failed to determine Kerberos principal name"
Does anybody know if this could be related to the sleep issues?
Thanks in advance

Hello:
Your English is excellent...far better than some who claim it is their mother tongue
My answer was a bit flippant, sorry
I looked at my own logs after reading your last post.  I note all sorts of incomprehensible (to me) messages - some indicating errors.  I have no clue what the sandbox messages indicate.
The other problems could be caused by a number of things - including hardware problems.
You might try resetting the PRAM and SMC.  Those are not cure alls, but they cannot hurt anything either.

  • More no sleep issues and sleep troubleshooting

    My one year old 20" Intel iMac Core 2 duo has just started not scheduled sleeping (will sleep when directed though...you know what I mean)...this really makes me mad because it's so hard to fix. I had this happen on my old G5 iMac and it took a month and two visits to the Mac geniuses to figure out. Anyway here are the things I tried with direction from this board and an Apple CS rep. (still no joy):
    -removed all USB and firewire devices except keyboard and mouse
    -made sure bluetooth is turned off (i had a bluetooth mouse that used to wake up my old G4 iBook)
    -made sure that windows sharing is off as well as printer sharing and personal file sharing (even though OSX is perfectly capable of sleeping with printer sharing and personal file sharing on while other computers are not connected. Not so with Windows file sharing on in my experience)
    -internet sharing off
    -reset PRAM
    -reset SMU
    -deleted cache
    -repaired disk permissions
    -booted from install disk and repaired disk (no repairs were necessary according to disk utility)
    -trashed preferences file (ouch, this really ***)
    -created new user account to test and still won't sleep
    -booted in safe mode (sleep works!!!!! but only in safe mode)
    These are the thing's I've tried...if there's anything any one can recommend on top of these please reply. Since this has been such a pervasive problem with non-laptop Macs I'd really love to see a troubleshooting flow chart for these sleep issues. I'd write it myself if I could get some guidance on which procedure to try first and so on...
    Dennis (den.thed) seems to be the sleep guru. If you've got time to weigh in I'd appreciate it before I format my HD and start from zero day.
    Cheers, -JV

    One thing that work for me was the following: I did all the hints possible but nothing worked until I decided to look at the Console logs, something was preventing the system from going to sleep, I looked at the logs and I had a repeating message: "com.apple.nis.ypbind: domainnname not set. aborting...throttling respawn:will start in 10 sec" it means its an active process. In fact there is a thread here that points toward this message. The message went away with the following fix: in Terminal I typed: sudo domainname example.com ,upon entering I noticed that the Console messages stopped immediately. So the next step was to observe if the computer would sleep on its own and YES it did.
    So this may not fix your sleep issues if there is another process involved, but I think the symptoms are very similar. I have also read that some caches folders are corrupt (if upgrading from Tiger) and since repairing permissions is a whole 'nother story these may not be purged at all thus causing conflicting processes and misdirected maintenance scripts that run in the background. If anything new I will kee posting. hope it works

  • How to disable [drm] and ntpd messages on console ?

    http://s9.postimage.org/e3ymmtxlr/tty1.png
    As you can see in the picture above, i want these messages not to apear on my console.
    I even can not write my user name to login because of them. ANNOYİGGGGGGG.
    I have to pres ENTER and sometimes lots of buttons to find a "Tombik(my hostname) login : ___" inscription.
    Also, the message below appears after the udev in the initscrips at the begining of the system.
    dd-nn-yyyy hh:mm:ss [drm] nouveau xxxx 1:00.0: no native mode, forcing panel scaling
    My /etc/rc.local file includes,
    { ntpd -qg; hwclock -w; } &
    ( I added this code as mentioned "Synchronize once per boot" section on here , for synchronizing my system date.)
    How can i prevent "[drm] nouveau.....forcing panel scaling" and "ntpd" messages not to be shown in the beginning system messages and my main console ?
    ( i use "drm_kms_helper.poll=0" and "quiet" in my /boot/grub/menu.lst . But they only solve screen flashing and "[drm] nouveau.....forcing panel scaling" message in every 10 second .)

    Root and the normal user login are the same. After the login there are "Can't open display" messages.
    This is my /etc/bash.bashrc file. There isn't any .bashrc file in root directory.
    # /etc/bash.bashrc
    # If not running interactively, don't do anything
    [[ $- != *i* ]] && return
    PS1='[\u@\h \W]\$ '
    PS2='> '
    PS3='> '
    PS4='+ '
    case ${TERM} in
    xterm*|rxvt*|Eterm|aterm|kterm|gnome*)
    PROMPT_COMMAND=${PROMPT_COMMAND:+$PROMPT_COMMAND; }'printf "\033]0;%s@%s:%s\007" "${USER}" "${HOSTNAME%%.*}" "${PWD/#$HOME/~}"'
    screen)
    PROMPT_COMMAND=${PROMPT_COMMAND:+$PROMPT_COMMAND; }'printf "\033_%s@%s:%s\033\\" "${USER}" "${HOSTNAME%%.*}" "${PWD/#$HOME/~}"'
    esac
    [ -r /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion ] && . /usr/share/bash-completion/bash_completion
    But my main problem is more inportant then the "Can't open display" issue.

  • Sleep issues and Ethernet

    On my fp iMac, running 10.4.11:
    A relatively new (roughly the past ten days) issue has arisen. I think I've narrowed it down to when the machine is woken up from sleep. I can't get on the internet nor can I connect to my other two machines from the 'Go > Connect to Server ...' command. A restart seems to temporarily sort the problem out.
    System Preferences exhibits odd behaviour when I go to the Network Pane while being cut of from the internet. This machine is connected to an Airport Extreme Base Station via Ethernet cable. In the Network Status window, the Ethernet button is red instead of green, and the following message is displayed:
    +The cable for Built-in Ethernet is connected, but your computer does not have an IP address and is not connected to the internet.+
    When I try and close the System Preferences window, I get the spinning beach ball. I have to use Force Quit twice in order to quit System Preferences. It's at this point I do a restart.
    In the past week I've used OnyX, DiskWarrior (twice), I've shut down and unplugged the AEBS and the broadband modem overnight as well as shutting down the computer, and yesterday I reset the PMU - almost in desperation. Two days ago I downloaded and installed the 10.4.11 combo updater.
    At present I've got the machine set to screen sleep only, no hard disk sleep.
    When it was set with hard disk sleep as well, it seemed that all was well until a few hours of normal use (including being woken from sleep) had passed before the problem arose.
    I might be wrong about sleep being an issue, but certainly the behaviour from System Preferences > Network is consistently the same.
    Can anyone shed some light here?

    Ok for the sleep issue the link from fishcomputer has some steps in for these type of issues but there something that more then likely is causing isssue with sleep.
    I would try the following
    Remove the powermanagement.plist located in mac hd/ library/ preferences/ systemconfiguration/com.apple.powermanagement.plist  delete that then restart
    For Microsoft issue i would try the following
    Boot into safe boot by holding shift at startup until you see apple and gear may also see loading bar once in safe boot remove the following folders
    MacHD/System/Library/Caches
    MacHD/Library/Caches
    User library Caches and cookies folder
    Restart.
    Since you are in lion you can't remove the folders from Hd need to just remove contents of the folder

  • Strange message in console after upgrading to ML

    Hi!
    I recently upgraded my system to ML. The operation went fine and the only issue I had was that VMware fusion stopped working, as it was outdated. Everrithing seems to be working nicely well, indeed much faster than OS X 10.7.4. However I'm getting the following error message in console log and have no idea what the reason could be.

    The console log is much larger, this messages will repeat ciclically no matter what applications I'm using, numbers between brackets will vary (I can't see them in activity monitor so I'm not sure if they're PIDs)
    Things I've done until now:
    - Looked for corrupted preference files
    - Repaired permissions and searched for wrong preferences files.
    - Cleaned the system from potentially troubling user agents and daemons
    - Removing third party apps from launch at login
    Any clues?
    Thanks.

  • Sleep issue and USB 2.0 card

    I recently installed an Allego 2.0 USB card, recommended by Apple, into my G4 1.25 Dual. The card works great but now I cannot put the computer to sleep. Whether by button or command the monitor goes dark but the G4 is still awake plus I can't bring it back without a cold boot. Tech support said this was an issue, offered some tips and said if all fails get a different card. I bought Iomega's as an experiement and same problem! Anybody else have this issue and could you solve it?
    Thanks.
    Bill

    Hi Joe,
    Yes, my mac usually sleeps just fine. My own sleep is another issue but that is for another forum.
    A couple of years ago I was on another forum and saw a post claiming a fully functional usb2 card for $9. I bought it and it worked slick as could be. It was a no name, no box, no instructions, bare card but the price was good and it came with a usb2 cable. I then posted as many times as I could to others about that site and the card. About a year later the link broke and I went back to the site. The had a card that looked the same, had the same chipset, and was the same price but the manufacturer had changed some components. The second card did not work as well as the first.
    Since then the same thing has happened to all of the makers of usb 2 cards. Something on the card changes and breaks sleep. It's not your fault. It's not the vendor's fault, it is the manufacturers fault. By the way, the manufacturers are usually not the name you see on the box. Companies buy from a manufacturer and slap their lable on the box.
    Keep trying and you will eventually find one.
    One guy went so far as to pay Belkin extra money for one of the older cards but it worked.

  • Report on Issues and Support Messages

    Hello All-
    I would like to generate a report that includes all issues and / or incidents. Is there a report that includes all issues including message long text? Or would this be considered a Z_report?

    Hi,
    For Issues and Top Issues, you can try out this:
    - SOLUTION_MANAGER
    - Open Solution Landscape
    - Operations: Solution Reporting -> Issues and Top Issues
    - Start "Issue and Top Issue Reporting" (via Icon)
    - Make you selection and execute
      this results in a list of Issues or Top Issues
    - mark the relevant rows
    - choose icon "Summary"
      ==> it will generate an HTML report with all details.

  • Sleep issues and failure code 0x00000200 0x11000000

    hi.
    I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this error please.
    I tried to wake my imac tonight and I was unable to and had to hold the power button to restart the computer, I have notice in the console log this error in the log.
    Sleep failure code 0x00000200 0x11000000, Previous Shutdown Cause: 3 and BSD root: disk0s2, major 14, minor 2.
    Any ideas? I might have to start shutting down my imac in future despite clearing out the SMC the other day.
    I am running 10.6.1 snow leopard

    Thanks for the message. This has happened a couple of times but this only happens when I switch user and the click on the sleep button on the login window. However I am running a hardware test and the quick one came back all ok. I am now running an extented one and will report back.
    If it is a memory error I will see a genius my imac is still in warranty I don't have AppleCare as I thought it was not worth it. I am thinking it might be a software bug like what was reported if you have the guest account And then finding all your files deleted.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Sleep issue and hard disk tick?

    I have been noticing a single tick everytime i put my iMac to sleep manualy. Also a while after it does it again about twice in a row (maybe when it is done falling asleep completely? lol)  Anyways, this bothers me since it is a brand new 27 inch iMac and I fear it has a hardware problem. I dont exactly know when it started, or even if it has been doing it a lot. But it came to my attention when i started diagnosing my computer on a dialy basis to make sure everything is ok. Now, I also have this problem with a WD Passport External HD. When I connect it to my iMac it recognizes it just fine, but sometimes out of nowhere it starts beeping and when I try to open it from the iMac, the beach ball starts spinning untill i eject it. Notice that this does NOT happen when i connect it to a windows computer. At least i havent noticed. And this is a little strange, but when i grab the HD and flip it, it STOPS beeping! and it goes on to do the usual time machine backup. I bring this issue up because i read somewhere that the external hd could be causing the tick as i put my iMac to sleep, and also because it bothers me how it only has happened to me in this iMac and not on my parents windows computer. Maybe a compatiibily issue? Also i would like to run a hardware test but I cant seem to find an option. Thanks everyone! I hope i can resolve my problem without having to take my computer to an apple store.

    By the way, other than this two issues, my iMac seems to be completely fine, exept for the fact that when i wake the iMac from sleep it makes some type of humming noise as if it was booting up (someone tell me if this is normal) and it also tells me that it couldnt find my network but at the same time i go on safari and can use it just fine. Weird

  • Windows 8.0 and Windows 10 technical review installation issues and activation message keeps poping up?

    My Dell Inspiron E1705 had Windows Vista and I could not install the Windows 10 technical review, so I installed my Windows 8.0 and then I could install the Win10 tech review.So I'm reviewing the Win10 and now I keep getting a pop up screen with Windows
    asking to activate so to get ride of the messages popping up every boot up. I am attempting to activate but when I follow the instructions to activate entering the product key from the Windows 8.0 fails. I next select call and provide your installation ID,
    this process is you call in and an automated prompt ask for your installation ID, then it gives you some numbers to enter in groups A thru H, but my screen only shows A thru G?  My concern is that if I don't activate this windows it will stop and thus
    no review of Win10.
    Should I be concerned is activation necessary, Do I re-install Win10 and start over, I feel that I may have inadvertently caused the problem when I did the initial installation it ask if I wanted to keep information from the previous installed Windows 8
    or install clean? If I don't get any other options/solutions I may just do a clean install?
    Thanks in advance for your support.
    /Joe

    Hi Joe,
    So the situation here is you upgrade Windows 8 to Windows 10, and Windows 10 can't be activated?
    There is no need to activate Windows 10 in the Technical Preview period, and if you have issue activating Windows, you may try to run:
    1. Open Administrative command prompt (Windows key+x > A)
    2. Type: SLUI 3
    3. Enter the product key listed on the download site.
    And if you still get the activation issue, please contact Microsoft local license support team for further assistance.

  • Getting strange messages on console

    My new external HD suddenly began running continually.  Curious, I opened the console and am getting this message repeated over and over and over:

    I ejected the drive, shut the computer down, waited a bit, pressed the power button and held for 5 seconds then released it.  Pressed it to start, got the tone and then did the CMD-OPT-P-R thing.  Plugged the drive back in and it's off and running again.
    This drive is a 3TB LaCie Porsche which I partitioned into 2 segments.  One for extra backups and the other to use with Carbon Copy Cloner.  It has been fine until about two days ago when it just decided to spin its wheels indefinitely.
    I'm wondering if my iMac is using it to write logs to since there's so much room there and my internal HD is about maxed out.  I just checked and there's only 18GB available on that drive.
    anyone?

    Darleen
    Solved!!!
    I found an old discussion that said to delete any references to unwanted applications from
                /library/launchdaemons
                /library/launchagents
    In my case, there were a couple of Adobe files from when CreativeStudio was installed.
    Removed the files.
    Emptied the trash.
    Rebooted.
    No more unwanted console messages...YAY!

    But if you aren't having any problems accessing the net, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • Report Performance Issue and Strange Execution Log Data

    Today we have had a report suddenly start taking a long time to execute.
    Looking at the Report Server executionLog3 table/view we have the following information for the query in question.
     <Connection>
          <ConnectionOpenTime>1</ConnectionOpenTime>
          <DataSets>
            <DataSet>
              <Name>ReportDataset</Name>
              <RowsRead>7</RowsRead>
              <TotalTimeDataRetrieval>150013</TotalTimeDataRetrieval>
              <ExecuteReaderTime>3</ExecuteReaderTime>
            </DataSet>
          </DataSets>
        </Connection>
    Supposedly the time taken to retrieve the data is around 150 seconds.  However, running a profiler trace while running the report in SSRS shows the query executing in under 1 second.
    Indeed running a profiler trace for anything on the server with a duration greater than 60 seconds isn't returning anything.  I can only assume the above data is wrong when it says 150 seconds to retrieve the data.  IT IS taking that long to run
    the report though - so the question is - where is the time going?
    Why can't I find a slow query on the server but SSRS thinks there is?
    LucasF
    EDIT: This was fixed by restarting the report server.  Any ideas on why this might occur?

    Hi Lucas,
    According to your description, you find the <TotalTimeDataRetrieval> in ExecutionLog3 is larger than the profiler trace time.
    In Reporting Services, to analyze the performance of the report, we usually check the TimeDataRetrieval to find the time we spend on retrieving the data. It’s the time needed for SQL Server to retrieve the data of all datasets in your report. So in your
    scenario, please check if the TimeDataRetrieval is equal to the time in profiler trace.

  • IOS 8.1 installed yesterday has spoilt my iPad 2! There are no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is now sluggish, juddery and strange, battery is draining fast and it no longer security locks when put to sleep.

    I am so cross because iOS 8.1 installed yesterday has ruined my iPad 2! There are now no keyboard, message or app sounds, performance is slow, juddery and strange, the battery is draining fast and the iPad no longer security locks when put to sleep.  I have checked all the settings, done a number of resets and really wish I hadn't bothered and stayed with iOS 7 when it all worked like a dream.  I thought that by waiting until 8.1, teething problems would have been fixed and I am just horrified that there is no going back!  I am not the only iPad owner that has this set of problems so why didn't you warn us Apple!  What are you going to do to help us?  I do not want to be forced into buying a newer version of iPad because you broke this one!

    In spite of the fact that you said you checked the settings, I still believe that you have system sounds muted.
    System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
    Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
    If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
    If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the control center if you are running iOS 7. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get to control center . Tap on the bell icon and system sounds will return.
    If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock can be accessed in the same manner as described above.
    This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

    AS for your other issues, have you done any other troubleshooting like resetting your iPad, resetting all settings or doing a complete factory reset?
