Suddenly last night iphone 4 sleep lock button is stuck in down positon. What might cause this and how do we fix it?

You have a hardware issue with the phone, Any number of things might have caused it; most likely a fall. In any case, you'll need to bring your phone into Apple for exchange. If you're under warranty, it will be exchanged free of charge. If not, you will pay $149 for an out of warranty exchange.
Alternatively, if you're not under warranty, you can bring your phone in to a 3rd party repair shop.

Bought the iPhone 4 like a month ago.
Great device but I just got this minor issue.
Been using the APPLE BUMPER on it and since a day or two the sleep/lock button has been stuck. I need to push it REALLY hard and then it'll work.
Already called my service provider (since Apple doesn't have any support overhere) and they told me that it's my own fault and they can fix it for 300 $ (that's 215 euro's for JUST A SLEEP/LOCK button).
Does anyone else had this problem also and what can I do about it?

See thread 2713539. You're by no means alone. Mine did it after about 7 months. It's not your fault, it's a fault with the iphone4 that Apple need to address and help their owners with. It's disgusting that owners are being charged for repairs. My understanding is that if it's within warranty, you can take it to an Apple Centre and it will be replaced with a refurbished unit immediately as there is no quick repair for this common design/manufacturing defect. I love my iphone but am not happy that outside warranty it seems you will be lucky if Apple don't just fob you off and make you pay for a hardware problem they know about but won't take liability for. I guess they're not making enough money.

If this does not work, your sleep button might be damaged and you'll have to get it serviced.

IPhone 3G S sleep/lock button not working

ok it doesnt redspond to anything. ive tried all kinds of restarts and restores and nothing works. i am getting a replacement from my retail store but i'm wondering if there is anything i can do to fix it.

Hi Aliassa, I'm having the same problem: no response from my sleep/lock button on my 3G.
I went to the Genius Bar at the Apple Store and they use a little lighted eye scope (like what an ear doctor would use) to look into the headphone port. If the ring down in there is pink (I believe), then they tell you that your iPhone has gotten wet before and then they refuse to help you any further.
This is frustrating as I know why my port's wetness indicator was pink: because I had to clean my headphone port with a touch of windex and a q-tip when my iPhone stopped recognizing that I had unplugged my headphones due to fuzz and crud buildup.
So by fixing that problem, I "voided" whatever help the Apple Store may have given me.
All together that blowz.
I wish I could get normal phone insurance on the iPhone. As far as I know I can't and I'll need to wait till December to get the new iPhone that's subsidized.
Really annoying since, there's no way to reset my phone now other than letting the battery wind down. Also, 'buttons' get hit when I can't wait the minimum of a minute for it to go to the lock screen automatically when I put it in my pocket.
My next step is to try to repair it myself by opening it up and cleaning or replacing the button.

Unless somebody else has a micracle workaround I don't know. Probably get the phone in for repair since it has been living on borrowed time so far and now you absolutely must have a working button.

I have an iPhone 4 which iv had it for almost a year now and yesterday night I pressed on the lock button and it wouldn't sleep ? or Lock??? I have NEVER ever dropped an iPhone or any phone.. NO it has never gotten wet, the phones button no longer does the clicking sound and feels stiff like pressing down on rubber. I do have warranty on my phone until 2012 of June. Hey i a few months ago had the problem, and like *gdgmacguy said i did so. I took out my phone i downloaded the Apple Store App and i set up an appointment with a guy at the genius bar, i went the next day with only my phone and nothing else, we talked about what was the problem and he took a look at it with a little light which i guess it was to make sure it wasnt droped in the water and within 5 min he just took a brand new iPhone for me. So i walked out with the reciept of the exchange (Paid $0.00. ) and a brand new iPhone 4.

If there is Warranty or AppleCare, make Genius reservation or set up service and take or send to Apple for resolution. Otherwise, Settings App > General > Accessibility > Assistive Touch > ON > tap new white screen button > Device > Lock Screen. This can be used to turn OFF iPhone. To turn iPhone ON, connect to power, charger or USB port of computer.

Sleep/lock button has broke, will Apple fix this?

So my lock/power/sleep button has decided to break. I cannot get it to work no matter how hard I press on the button.
It has NOT been dropped, exposed to water or humdity of any kind.
My question is, will Apple fix this for me or replace my iPhone 4? I have scheduled an appointment at the closest store for Monday as it was the earliest I could be seen and I am still under warranty.

Mine is too! There is really no at- home way to fix this. There is something you can use to fix it MOMENTARILY WITHOUT USING THE LOCK BUTTON!!!!!!
STEP 1: Go to settings.
STEP 2: Go to General.
STEP 3: Click Accessibility.
STEP 4: Scroll down. Under Physical & Monitor, there should be a white box that says AssistiveTouch. Click on it.
STEP 5: Click on. Now, you can turn it off and lock the screen without using the lock button (Which is stuck)! There should now be a little white dot in the area of you screen. You can actually control where it is by dragging it to a corner of the screen. If you click on the white dot and click Devices, you can see that you can do all sorts of things. You can rotate the screen, lock it, turn the volume up and down, and shake it (that's if you are to lazy to change the music)! If you want to turn your iPod off, just hold down on the lock screen icon and it should bring you to the power slider! The only thing is, you have to plug the iPod in (As if you were going to charge it) for it to turn on!
I highly recommend that you go to the closest Apple store. They will help you. The amount of which they charge you depends on how stuck it is. If it is minor, they won't charge you a whole lot. But if they have to take the whole thing apart, they will charge you a fair amount of money.
If they cannot fix it at all, then they will give you a new iPod. That fee will be from $99 to $199! (But for a new iPod that's not too bad. I got mine for almost $300!)

Looking for an App that forces iPhone into sleep/lock mode

I don't need anything fancy. Searching the app store has proved fruitless.
I don't need any password protection. I dropped my phone and it broke the sleep/lock button.
I just wanna lock my phone so I can throw it into my purse without pressing buttons and using power.
As it is now I've set the auto lock to 1min and stand around waiting til it shuts off, however this is frustrating because when I'm using it its usually on for hours at a time and 1min of idle shuts it down so I have to go into settings and set autolock to never... and then go back and set it to 1m to shut it down.
If anyone can name an app to lock/sleep my phone I'd be grateful. If you don't know of an app... perhaps you could write one and sell it on app store.

pps. Reset, Restore, Restore as new have all failed.

As already provided, Apple does not make the necessary API's available to developers to do what you want. Only Apple could implement such.

IPhone 4 lock button broke

I've had my iPhone for since February 2013. A few weeks ago my lock button just got stuck, I've never dropped it, it's in immaculate condition, it just got stuck out of nowhere. I'm just wondering how much would it cost to get it fixed as I daren't try to fix it myself as I have no idea where I'd even start
