  • Screen won't turn on after sleep for newest macbook pro (Feb 26 2011)

    Hi!
I just bought the 13' Macbook Pro with an 2.7GHz dual-core i7 processor and 500GB of space, the $1500 model. I am having a problem with the screen and I am wondering if I should be worried about it or if anyone else has noticed it. If it continues, I will have to take it into the store and see if I can get it fixed.
My macbooks screen will not turn on after it falls asleep for a long period of time. The first night I had this computer, it was playing music and I turned the screen brightness all the way down/off and then I fell asleep. The energy settings were set so that the computer would fall asleep after 20 minutes. Pathfinder, F.lux and iTunes were the only application running at the time. When I woke up the next morning, the light on the computer's side indicating it was asleep was slowly fading in and out (as expected). I hit some keys on the keyboard and the keyboards backlighting turned on after a few seconds.
But the screen did not turn on. I tried adjusting the screen brightness on the keyboard and nothing happened. After a few minutes, I held down the power button and heard the computer turn off. I turned the computer back on, AND THE SCREEN LOOKED VERY STRANGE. I could see part of iTunes fragmented/segmented into 5 or 6 sections across the screen. There were also strange lines going across the screen. It looked kind of like a leftover image of iTunes that could be solved with a screen refresh. I turned off my computer again and turned it back on about two more times, and then the screen would simple just not turn on.
As I was packing up to go to the Apple Store, I tried one more time to turn my computer on and the screen was working fine. This was yesterday, and for the rest of the day the computer seemed to work fine. However, I don't think I let my computer fall asleep all day yesterday because I was using it so much.
Basically the same thing happened this morning when I woke up, except to a lesser degree. My computers screen was unresponsive after keyboard input, but I was able to get music to play from my speakers. I restarted it and it seems to be working fine. I didn't see the screen do that weird fragmentation thing this time.
I think something about the sleep function is interfering with my computer's screen. Or perhaps Pathfinder or F.lux have something to do with it. F.lux, by the way, is a application that turns the screen a dark yellowish at night to help your eyes. But I have friends that use this application and I myself have used it for a while and we have never had this problem. Then again, none of them have a 13 inch with an i7.
Does anyone know about this problem and have advice that would save me a trip to the Apple store?
    thanks!

Bad news and good news. The bad news is that it happened again this morning. The good news is that I finally found something interesting in the console log, at the exact second my clock is stuck when the machine is failing to wake from sleep:

From when the problem apparently starts (some point in the night while my machine is idle and supposedly asleep) until when I discover it and reboot the machine, I get dozens or hundreds of the above messages. Now somebody just needs to figure out what that means and stop it from happening...

  • Target Disk Mode on Macbook Pro to Windows Vista?

I am scheduled to take my Macbook Pro in for the NVidia Warranty repair and need to back up the hard drive (I know, I know...). I can't get the Macbook to boot at all b/c of the NVidia issue, except in Target Disk Mode.
And the only other computer I have is Windows (I know, I know...this feels very cathartic, btw). Is it possible to have the Windows Vista computer connect to the Macbook via FireWire while the Macbook is in Target Disk Mode to temporarily back up my files on the Windows computer?
I know I could pay for backup, but I'm cheap. So I'm trying to find a workaround.
    Any help would be appreciated!

Is it possible to have the Windows Vista computer connect to the Macbook via FireWire while the Macbook is in Target Disk Mode to temporarily back up my files on the Windows computer?
It may or may not work depending on the PC's configuration, but a program such as MacDrive needs to be installed on the PC to enable it to read the Mac's hard drive in any case.

  • 64-bit mode on MacBook Pro?

How do you know that your Mac is running in 64-bit mode. I run my Windows 7 partition in 64bit mode, but I don't know if my Mac is doing the same.
    Thank You.
    Specs below (in green text)

Taking a quick look (no pun intended) in Activity Monitor I see that almost everything is running in 64bit mode (except for ituneshelper and itunes), but safari runs in 64bit as well.
Anyways, let's see what Steve Jobs has instore for Mac OS X ("Lion") tomorrow at the "Back To The Mac" event. Hopefully, OSX Lion will run well on the current 2010 MacBook Pro's without any kind of upgrading (Hardware-wise, like ram upgrade). Personally, I don't understand why Apple feels the need to release a new OSX, I mean Snow Leopard came a little over a year ago and it is the best Version of OSX yet (I used Tiger, and Leopard, and I say 10.6 is a leap forward improvement over Leopard in terms of snappyness). OSX (Snow Leopard) is lightyears over Windows in terms of technologies, I mean, look at how OSX uses its kernel, it runs 64bit capable applications in a 32bit kernel and still the user enjoy the benefits of 64bit applications without the need to boot with the 64bit kernel, in Windows 7 you can't do that. What I would not like to see in 10.7 is someting like ditching the current aqua interface in favor of the minimalistic iOS UI, it will make OSX look like (in Jobs terms) as "Baby Software", I guess is me but Aqua fits OSX still to this date, even Windows Aero looks retro when you put it against Aqua.
Thank You everyone for your feedback.

What i need to do? Stay on 10.6 or Reinstal Back To Leopard 10.5 ?

I still have not been able to find a solution to this problem.
When I wake up my MBP the system is locked up. If I try to launch an app it just bounces in the dock then does nothing. If I move the cursor over the right side of the menu I get the beach ball. I cannot pull up the force quick menu, or click on anything really, nor can I log out or shutdown cleanly. There's nothing that I can do other than power off the machine. This only seems to happen if I have two accounts are logged in. It doesn't matter which account is active before sleeping.
    Any one with any thoughts?
I'll include a snippet from my syslog in case its of use. I'm out of things to try...

  • Sleep Issues with Macbook Pro

    Hi all,
When I wake my laptop (15" Spring 2011 Macbook Pro) while it's connected to a power source, I see the screen for a split second before it goes black. Nothing I do will make the screen come back until I disconnect the power source, at which point the screen gets bright again.
However, what's interesting is that while the screen is black, the computer still gets input from the keyboard because I can see things that I've typed in the password field.
Is there any way to fix this?
    Thanks in advance!

    Reset SMC.
Many power related issues can be resolved by resetting SMC.

    Best.

  • My macbook doesnt wake up from sleep mode, my macbook doesnt wake up from sleep mode

What to do when the computer doesnt wake up form sleep mode when left for a couple of hours?

Hit me over the head enough times with a fact and it will sink in.
In the front right corner where your right wrist sets when typing there is a light in the dot of the i in Thinkpad. When the computer is asleep, what is that light doing? When you try waking up the computer and the screen is black, is the light doing anything?
Do you have the power manager installed?

  • Download, battery, and sleep problems on macbook pro with retina display after upgrading to Mountain lion

After waiting a few days to download OS X Mountain lion, I finally installed it on my new MacBook with retina display a couple days ago. I love the interface and all the new features, but I've noticed some problems I really need to resolve. I'm constantly downloading large files and I noticed thhis change:
Before, on Lion, I could download files from Safari or the Internet and the computer would sleep whenever it was set to on energy preferences and the download would resume. This would let the computer conserve energy so the download could progress further when on battery. Now, I noticed that my computer never goes to sleep! Its set to have the display sleep in 5 minutes and the computer in 15 on both battery and when plugged in, but it never does either. I don't know if it has to do with the fact that power nap is on even when using battery. So now the Mac is constantly on when downloading something and instead of downloading a one gigabyte file that would take up 15% of my battery, it takes up 60% since it never sleeps. When I tried downloading something and then manually putting the computer to sleep, the download was interrupted and it said Wi-Fi connection lost so I have to start the download over again.
That's basically all three problems in one situation. I even put the brightness all the way on low so the screen is black when downloading, but it still uses up much more battery than before. Can someone help find a solution?

Did you try turning off power nap?

  • Sleep mode crashes MacBook running OS X 10.5.8

Click the Apple>Sleep, message box opens and says in several languages that Mac OS X must shut down.  Does not seem related to programs I have open at the time.  Has been happening for 2 days now, big inconvenience.

No, it is not possible. You need to contact Apple and see if you can purchase replacement discs for those that came with your computer when it was new.

  • Serious problems waking up my MacBook Pro from sleep mode

I have quite frequent problems waking my MacBook Pro from sleep mode - often it results in either a black or a totally scrambled screen and only a hard reset will cure the problem (for this time). I have tried to pinpoint whether a certain program that I use last before putting the computer to sleep is responsible, but all attempts so far have failed. The error seems random, but is very annoying since one in about three or four wake-up actions are affected!
I use Parallels Desktop during the day running Windows XP, and in the evenings I use mainly Safari and Mail under OSX. The only other program always open is Mori - a notes/information management tool.
Anyone with similar problems? Any advice??
    Cheers,
    -J
    MacBook Pro 15   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hello,
I was browsing the 'downloads' section of the Apple support page and I saw a firmware update that might help you out.
It is called the "MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.2" and it is supposed to fix "several Boot Camp, start up, and wake-from-sleep issues on MacBook Pro computers."
    The web address is ( http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macbookproefifirmwareupdate12.html )
If that doesn't fix it call Apple care.
    Good Luck.

  • Macbook pro doesn't go to sleep when screen lid is shut

Hi, I've got macbook pro late 2008 model with glass trackpad. When i got it was working fine and everytime i shut the screen lid, it would goto sleep like normal macbook pro does. Recently its not going to sleep at all. I've to put it sleep to by clicking apple logo on the corner and then choosing sleep. I know its a minor thing but I want to fix it. I bought a new charger sometime ago but that doesn't seems to be doing anything to macbook pro or does it?
    Thanks

I've tried SMC reset and nothing happened and PRAM reset says you shouldn't do it unless you've a problems with audio, screen and one more.
Is it safe to perform PRAM reset? I mean it wouldn't crash anything or something. Sorry kind of new here

  • MacBook Pro Retina won't wake after after sleeping!

On most occasions after my 13" MacBook Pro Retina  has been put to sleep (by closing lid or pressing Power  button) overnight  it will not wake up again until I have reset the Systems Management Controller.   Opening the lid, or Power button or Space bar still leaves a black screen.
My wife's new 11" MacBook Air suffers similar problems even after our local Apple Store reinstalled Mavericks in an attempt to resolve the problem..
Any thoughts on a solution would be gratefully received - thanks.

Mac Pro is not the same as the notebook MacBook Pro

  • MacBook Pro screen blank when turned on

So my MacBook Pro was working about 1 hour ago when I had left it on to do an update for one of my games on my desktop and I would think it would go to sleep. My MacBook Pro 17 inches 2007 model and I would think that when I got back home and opened my computer that it would awaken from sleep. This is where it gets weird the bottom half of my computer is on but the screen is turned of, I now that the computer is on since the light on the button you press to open the MacBook Pro is on. So if any one can help me I would be entirely grateful. So I have tried to restart it and that didn't work. I even looked up online if this had happened to other people and it has and I have tried restarting my MacBook Pro on safe mode by pressing the shift key and that didn't work. Then I tried restarting the PRMA and that didn't work. The same thing has happened to my sisters computer which is an identically MacBook Pro like this one in every way and she sent it to apple and they said that you have a bad logic bouts and now they have to replace and those are very expensive and I am just hoping that I don't have that problem with my MacBook Pro. So if any one can help please. Ohh my computer runs osx but I think it's to the most updated osx but not  mountain lion. If anyone needs anymore information about my computer to help me fix this problem I will gladly give you more info thanks and please help.

Booting into Safe Mode can take a long, long time... how long did you allow?
It really sounds as if you've a hardware problem. You say that you're not running Mountain Lion, but you don't say which version of OS X you're running. If Lion, you can try booting to your Recovery partition by holding down the Command and R keys whilst booting. If you're not running Lion, get the original installation disc(s) that shipped with your computer and try booting from the first disc.
If you can't boot into Safe Mode, Recovery partition or using an original disc, you're just going to have to take your computer into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them run tests on the machine. You could try running the Apple Hardware Test yourself, but given your symptoms, I'm not sure that you'll be able to do that.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
