Sleep no more

I thought the .1 update had fixed it, but still getting the same problem again now.
I've got 16Gb of RAM and a shed load of applications running.. and my iMac won't go to sleep !
The only option is to close all my apps and shutdown.
Also when I come out of target display mode on the left iMac having been using screen sharing to it, the mouse pointer has dissapeared ( permanently !)
I've literally just wasted yet another hour of my life trying different things to work around this Lion bug !

  • Why won't my Mac Pro go to sleep any more?

I upgraded to yosemite I a few days later I noticed that my mac pro (3.1 early 2008 dual 2.8 xeon processors, two sad's one hdd, 14GB memory) doesn't go to sleep any more.  When I choose sleep from the Apple menu the displays go dark and it looks like it's sleeping, but the system is still humming along, as if a fan or an HDD is still spinning.  I can shut it down just fine, but would really like just to have it go to sleep like it used to.
I also recently added a PCIe USB 3.0/eSATA card for external connections (From OWC, compatible with my system).
Any known issues that would cause this?

    Hi ..
Open System Preferences > Energy Saver then click:  Restore Defaults
Then select Sleep from the Apple  menu.
See if that makes a difference.
If not, reset the PRAM > OS X Yosemite: Reset your computer’s PRAM
BTW, if connected, external drives can prevent the Mac from going in to sleep mode.

  • Wireless connection lost after macbook pro sleeps for more than 15 minutes

It's annoying. I have a brand new macbookpro 3.06Ghz 17" hi-res screen running OS-X 10.6.3 and the wireless connection keeps dropping after the computer is either turned off or sleeping for more than 15 minutes.
My router is a linksys wireless G, has dd-wrt software in it which is very powerful. When I release or renew the DHCP at the router, the mackbook connects to the wireless network, no problem.
What configuration can be done at the macbook as to not have it time-out airport wireless connections unless I renew/release DHCP at the router? This is an annoyance beyond the limits of anyone's patience.... Thanks in advance for any help!

Well, since nobody answered this post I decided to try a bunch of things and I believe I came to a solution:
1 - Make airport the first connection under System Preferences->Network
2 - In the advanced window:
    - Under AirPort: Keep only one network name on the list (the one you use all the time)
    - Select 'remember networks this computer has joined' and deselect all other boxes
    - Take note of the Airport ID (xx:xx:xx:xx:xx) and put it in your router's MAC address list. I do this because I only allow connections to my router from mac IDs that are on the list I create. In my case, I have my macbook pro and my PS3 system. If you don't know how to edit the MAC list in your router, do some research. It's pretty easy.
    - Under TCP/IP: Select "Using DHCP" on the IPv4 drop box
    - Select "Off" for IPV6 drop box
    - Under DNS, after you connect at least once, you should see (grayed out) your router's IP address on the left box and the domain on the right side box.
Finally, under "Ethernet" you should see your Mac address there, the configure option should be set to Automatically and MTU as standard (1500).
Press OK and then press "Apply" and lock that screen by clicking on the padlock at the bottom left. BTW on the top of this screen Location should be "Automatic" - if not, select it and apply.
Done! Your wireless should connect quickly after the computer is turned on or waken up from sleep state. This assumes you configured your router correctly (mac addresses, frequencies, etc).
Good Luck to all who try this - at least I have not have any more dropped wireless connections.

  • Monitor doesn't sleep any more

I have a 24" Soyo monitor attached to my Mini....I've had it for at least 6 months now and it's worked fine.
I leave my Mini on 24/7 and have the screensaver set to kick in at 10 minutes and the monitor to sleep at 15 minutes. I don't have the Mini set to sleep because when I did I had a problem with some USB devices not being recognized when it woke up.
As expected, at 10 minutes the screensaver would kick in, and 5 minutes later my monitor would blank out (go to sleep mode - power LED turns from blue to red). However, for the last couple of weeks I notice when I wake up in the morning, the screensaver is still showing on the screen....after 8 hours the monitor still hasn't gone to sleep.
I've restarted...set the sleep time to different values...nothing seems to make the monitor go to sleep any more. Any ideas on getting the expected behavior back?

Try repairing your disk by booting up from the Mc OS X install disk and go to Utilities-->Disk Utility. Select your HD and click repair disk.

  • Really need some help here.  My G5 keeps putting itself to sleep and more..

Just out of the blue my mac doesn't turn on. I turned it on a few more times and it still wouldn'tt power up, my screen was just not recognizing anything. So I open up my mac unplug everything, than turn it back on and it works again. But the fan is very loud, I hear grinding noises every now and than, and the weirdest thing is it would not power up unless I took the cover off my mac and removed the plastic bay that protects the inside from dust.
Now it keeps putting itself to sleep. Over and over it's so frustrating.
I'm very concerned here, is this a hard drive problem? I even formated my hard drive, but that did nothing.
    What is going on here?

Have you checked the PRAM battery?
I would check it first. When mine went, I had no response from my Mac at all; just a light on my power button; absolutely no boot at all.
Check out things in Texas Mac Man's Battery, PRAM, PMU tutorial on the subject. His tutorial is a little dated (don't believe it even mentions G5's) but the info in it, except SMU not being included, still applies.
I believe this is the battery for a Late 2005 G5 2.5 dual. Yours is near the age it should be replaced.

  • Putting iMac to sleep with more than one user logged on

    Hi,
Our family shares the iMca with an account for each member.
They all leave them looged on all the time and we switch between each.
I want to force th eiMac to sleep between mifnight and 6 AM to save power.
When I set this up in Energy Save settings within System preferences, it will not execute and comes back with an error saying that there are other users logged on and this may cause them to lose work.
Any idea how I can force this to over ride any objections?
    Thanks
    SD

It sounds like you have scheduled it to shut down instead of sleep. Ensure you have selected Sleep and not Shut Down.

  • IMac sleeping automatically more and more frequently with hudge fan noise

A few days when I was watching a DVD my computer started to sleep suddendly.
Of course I desactivated sleeping option in preferences panel and I also tried to reset the nvram without success.
It was getting worse when I tried to play games (on DVD) : every minutes the computer started to sleep (iMac G5 iSight 20")
Now it is not a matter of DVD, my computer often sleeps every 20 seconds even during startup, it is impossible to work. When I restart there are hudge fan noises which are not disappearing after starting.
The only way to work without the imac sleeping every 20 s is to boot under my safe tech tool pro partition.
I tried to repair permissions, reinstall combo update, delete caches with Onyx, ran techtools tests and as I said reset nvram...without result
If I can get some help it would be nice, I am currently backing up all my data in case...

You are dong the right thing by backing up, it sounds as if your power supply is going bad. What did TechTool report?
Have you tried booting from the install disc and verifying/repairing the drive? Try running the Apple Hardware Test as well, but it doesn't always catch things. It does sound like a hardware problem, if none of the suggestions helps, call Apple.

  • Display will not sleep any more after waking from sleep

My Macbook has recently started misbehaving after waking from sleep. Started putting the entire MB to sleep each night by closing the lid. When I wake it in the morning everything seems normal, no error messages. However from that point forward the display will not dim or sleep. I've tried re-applying my settings in System Preferences -> Energy Saver. Pretty much the only fix has been to reboot, which is annoying and Windows-like.
In the interest of full disclosure, I have "fast sleep" enabled (aka hibernation mode disabled) but I've had that since I bought my MB with 10.5.1 on it. So I don't think it's related. In fact I changed to the default Energy Saver profile to see if that fixed the problem (it didn't), which re-enabled hibernation mode and I then had to re-disable hibernation.
I want to say this started happening after the 10.5.4 update, but that may have been a coincidence as to when I started sleeping it each night... I don't exactly remember.
I downloaded Cocktail to run all the cron jobs, etc, that don't get run when sleeping at night, and that didn't help either.
Any suggestions? Anyone else ever see this? Seeing it now?
    Thanks!

This is still an issue for me.
I sleep my Macbook every night by closing the lid. After doing this a few times, the display either stops sleeping, or stops locking. I have the lock menu in the Apple menu bar, and even selecting "Lock screen" will not work.
Sometimes a reboot fixes it, sometimes I have to reset the SMC.
    Any info out there?

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep for more than a few seconds

For a few months now my late '08 MBP has been intermittently refusing to sleep. When I close the lid, the system will power down to sleep mode, the Apple on the top goes out and the power light will fade off and on as expected. But after a few seconds, the cd drive whirrs and the system powers up again and I have to choose Apple Menu > Sleep, because closing the lid doesn't work.
It's an intermittent issue: sometimes it'll sleep first time, other times it needs to be told to sleep from the Apple menu three or four times to persuade it to get some rest.
I've tried the usual suspects: Turning off Bluetooth, PRAM, SMC...anyone else have this problem?

Certain settings, e.g. printer sharing, can prevent sleep. There are other possibilities as well. See this kbase article:

  • Icons keep disappearing off the monitor when computer sleeps for more than 10 minutes

My new HP Pavilion I5-2300 keeps locking up when the computer rests for more than 10 minutes.  When i go to wake up the computer the desktop background comes up on the monitor, but all of my icons are missing and no command prompts work from the keyboard.  I have just been unplugging and then replugging the monitor from the power source and that seems to reboot the freeze, but i really don't want to have to do this every time it happens.  Anybody experience anything similar? Am i missing an easy solution here?  Thanks

    Hi,
As you can see from the theory this alert could mean two things:
    1. Too many powershell scripts are executed on agent simultaneously
    2. There are scripts that takes much time to complete
First of all, you need to evaluate a script-based module (workflow). You need to find answers to following questions:
    – What is the target for this script-based workflow?
    – How many instances of this target class are exist on the affected computer?
    – Does this script leveraging a cookdown concept?
    – How long it take for script to complete?
Please go through the articles below for more details:

  • Cannot put my Mac to sleep for more than  a second

When I put my Mac to sleep it shuts down for a moment tnd then comes right back up. I have a g4 running asx 10.3.9. Currently it is set up for a screen save tocome on after the computer has been inactive for 5 inutes and to go to sleep after 15 minutes. Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Rocky

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is Apple doc.#303698 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit. If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
Also, here is Apple doc.#305262 about PCI cards and sleep.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
    Check the printer queue!"
    Good Luck!  DALE

  • Sleep Issues & more!

When I close the lid on my ibook it will go to sleep like it should, but sometimes it will only stay asleep for a couple minutes and then come out of sleep then go back into sleep, ect. But then other times it will stay asleep like it should. Is there anyway to fix this? Also I have my old ibook tangerine here and it has a program on it I need for school, is there any way to copy it from the tangerine to the lime, or not? If not I will just use the tangerine. Another also what cheap wireless alternative do you recommend? I dont want to spend the money on an airport card for the tangerine because I dont use it often. I know that there are usb adapters but which ones work with mac? Thanks for the help!

    Hi Bitting7 -
I would guess there may be some background running system or application process going on - check out this doc...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=8000
Check out this article re: file sharing to transfer your program across...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106461
The Airport Card is the best way to go as there have been reported problems with USB Wireless systems and the ibook. Older Sony Vaio cards will work as well along with a few other generic cards that would need modifications to your ibook - but these are generally not recommended.

  • Why do I get a blank white screen on wakeup from sleep?

When my iMac wakes from s sleep lasting more than 10 minutes, I get a completely white screen. Everything is working well: when I move the cursor to the screen bottom, my toolbar appears, and when I click on an app icon, the part of the screen in and around its windows refreshes. (If I click on Launchpad, the entire screen refreshes). Is this a new bug? Advice on fixes, please?

  • Put to Sleep and  Don't wake up when i open my macbook pro

    Hello,
i have a Macbook pro 17' (2,33ghz) using leopard 10.5.2 with all the latest update.
Everytime i put my computer to sleep for more than 10 minutes (random time), when i try to wake up nothing happen, i hear a strange noise of the HD for about 2 seconds and the screen stay Black.
When i close the computer again, the light stay On, when i open the computer again nothing happen, the screen is black, no buttons works, nothing happen.
So i have to press the Power button for a few seconds and then turn on my Mac again.
this happen to me every day !
    i try:
Remove the charger = Same Problem
With the charger = Same Problem
With Apple Bluetooth mouse = Same Problem
Without Apple Bluetooth mouse = Same Problem
With External HD = Same Problem
Without External HD = Same Problem
when i try to wake up the Mac, I wait for more than 10 minutes and nothing happen.
i see the Log's and i can't see antything Wrong.
this is not the first time i have this problem
in 10.4.8 i have the problem, when i update to 10.4.9 "fix the problem" until 10.5.2
    i have the AppleCare.
i dont know if this is a Hardware or Software problem and if the guarantee cover this?
thinkin that this could be a HD problem so i check in the disk utility and everyting is OK.
    Thanks!

Well. in my searching i find an """"Answer"""
Some body was talking about that the new's Mac have something called "Safe Sleep" so when someone sleep the Mac the Information of the Ram make a copy in the HD this can take for 30 seconds to a minute. In this time, if you move the mac or do something else, generate a error and corrupt the Information of the ram and the Mac stop working.
Say that to remove this "Safe Sleep" have to open the terminal and:
The Unix command to disable SafeSleep is:
    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0
To re-enable SafeSleep, the command is:
    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 3
Maybe Apple going to Fix this in future Updates.
    Sorry for my English !

  • Unable to write to external drive after drive sleeps

This topic seems to be all over the place. I want to know if there is a fix.
I have a number of external disk drives. They are connected via USB and firewire. About 30% of the time, if a drive has been put in sleep mode and then later awakened, I am unable to write to it. If I try to dismount the drive I get a -50 error that the drive is in use. But that is not true because nothing but the finder is running. If I look the console log there are lots of the following messages.
Dec 6 15:50:43 squid fseventsd[45]: disk logger: failed to open output file /Volumes/Calvary1TB/.fseventsd/63657332a56b8d30 (Invalid argument). mount point /Volumes/Calvary1TB/.fseventsd
    Dec 6 15:50:50 squid UnmountAssistant[1463]:
The drive in question is the CAXM Calvary1TB drive. BTW when I received the Calvary disk drive, I reformatted it OSX journaled with a GUID partition before using it. All my other 8 TB of storage is formatted the same way and I had no problems before Snow Leopard. Anyhow, If I force a dismount, all returns to normal. OR if I disable sleep the drive drives options in the energy saver preferences, the problem disappears. But then none of the drives ever spin down.
Once every 50 or so forced dismounts (it happens a lot), OSX will crash with the kiss of death display.
This problem did not exist in pre Snow Leopard, so obviously changes were made to the file system and not properly tested. Anyone have any idea when this will be fixed.

The drive in question is the CAXM Calvary1TB drive.
Calvary lists this drive series only in its "Windows PC" section at http://www.cavalrystorage.com/pr_index.htm. This could be a problem because different manufacturers use different methods to implement wake-from-sleep (or more generally, energy management features) in the support circuitry of external drives. IOW, there are no universal standards for this, so manufacturers may or may not design their implementations for cross-platform compatibility.
Unfortunately, since Windows PC's dominate the market some manufacturers use energy management methods in some or all of their designs that work reliably only with that platform. For this reason, there is always some risk of unexpected behavior when using external drives not specifically marketed as Mac OS X compatible with a Mac. (This is not a problem with "raw" internal drives directly connected to a Mac's SATA interface because there is no support circuitry involved.)
Since you already have invested in these drives, your best bet is to contact Calvary & see if they can offer a solution. If you are lucky, they may have a firmware updater for the CAXM series that works reliably with Snow Leopard; if not, they may simply tell you not to let the drives sleep, or that they don't support the CAXM series with Macs & you are on your own.
