Sleep or power off for traveling?

Is it ok to transport the MBP (in the back-bag) while it is in the sleeping mode? or should I turn it off totally before transport? Please let me know, thanks

Hi Tom71,
The MacBookPro actually has various possible sleep modes, but the default is one which both saves a 'sleep image" to disk (in case of a battery running out, etc - hence the slow "going to sleep" process, and maintains the contents of RAM - hence the fast wakeup unless the sleep image has to be accessed, but the continuing current drain).
Maintaining the contents of RAM necessarily uses power.
You can change the sleep mode using terminal if you wish, but a useful little utility called "SmartSleep" makes this easier.
Your choices are essentially:
1) the default (discussed above) - slow to sleep, fast to wake, with power maintained to RAM.
2) "sleep only" mode - in which power is maintained to the RAM, but no sleep image is written - fast both in going to sleep and waking up but less secure than the other options and still uses your battery.
3) "hibernation" mode only - doesn't maintain power to RAM, but writes the disk image - slow to sleep and slow to wake, but it substantially reduces power consumption while sleeping over any extended period and is safe if your battery runs out anyway.
(there are two additional modes which are relevant if you are using "secure virtual memory")
If you want to use Terminal commands to make the changes see http://www.macworld.com/article/53471/2006/10/sleepmode.html
There is also a Widget available called "Deep Sleep" - http://www.axoniclabs.com/DeepSleep/ that will "hibernate" your Mac if you wish.
Cheers
Rod

When waking from "sleep" the screen appears normal but, the pointer leaves a trail of grey as it moves and the whole screen will turn grey if I keep moving the pointer. The computer is effectively dead. Have to shut down by using power off for six seconds and then re-starting. I know little about computers!

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

After Sleep, and power off, Lion Crash Totaly!
    I`'ve buy a iMac core i5, July 15 2011, 500gb, 4gb (upgraded to 8gb Ram).
Transf my MBP with Snow at first iMac power on, after tranfer Snow, I buy the Lion, install and use until 2 weeks. After the first Sleep, turn Lion power off to change place. When power on, the Lion was Crashed the computer in some way that was impossible to recover or do anything. even go back the timemachine with Lion or Snow, trey clean PRAM, DVD Boot, nothing works.
So, I put a Ubuntu LiveCD, REMOVE COMPLETE THE GUID of iMac Disk, also clean the PRAM (cmd+opt+ P + R during boot), so, the iMac was Clean and I Install the SNOW (sure).
I just Lost the money and download time that spent to get with Lion?

  • Put to Sleep, or Power off?

Is it best for me to put my iPod Touch to sleep or power it off when I'm not using it?

are you sure? i read that turning off the iPod completely (and on again) actually drains the battery more.
since i read that (in a battery saving tips thread) i always leave mine sleeping. my battery behaves fine, it does get low after i've listened to a 3.5 hour radio show via wifi on the BBC iPlayer, or play power consuming games, but wifi/gaming does take up battery.
i do use it on pretty much a daily basis, and sync it (thus charge it, even a little bit) most days, but sleep mode works just fine for me.
i'd say if you aren't using it for a long period of time then powering off is probably better for it. otherwise sleep mode is definitely the way forward. (apart from anything else, loading the iPod touch up from scratch, takes a good few minutes, which can be a little grating if you want instant access to your music!)

  • Need a reliable power adapter for travel

I am traveling to Russia in a few weeks and I need a good power adapter for my Mac Book Pro, iphone, and other small devices such as a shaver. I don't want to spend $40-50 on the Apple travel kit. Does anyone know of a good adapter kit or can lead me to a site. This is my first time in Europe and Russia and I will be there for 2 weeks and I plan to use my laptop, camcorder, and camera a ton.

All you need is an AC prong adapter and, if you can't find what you need on the web, you'll be able to find one in Russia for a small handful of rubles.

  • Passcode lock protection" prior to power-off for mobile Apple devices

I would like to make a suggestion for an enhanced security operating procedure for Apple devices, with the purpose of detecting a device after it has been stolen.
This idea has occurred to me after an unfortunate personal experience. In particular, two months ago there was an incident where my backpack with four Apple devices belonging to myself and my wife (two iphones and two ipads) was stolen.
Immediately after the theft, within the next 10 minutes, I managed to gain access to a computer.
Although I had activated the service “find my iphone” and “find my ipad” respectively, I soon found out that the devices were already offline, which means that the first thing that the thieves did was to power them off.  Please note that all devices were “passcode lock protected”.
The enhanced security proposal I would like make is the following:
A command to be added to the operating system according to which, in order to be able to power-off the device, the user will have to give the valid passcode. In other words, I am suggesting a “passcode lock protection” prior to power-off and not just prior to power-on. By means of this arrangement, and as long as batteries last, the stolen devices may be located.
    Thank you for your time.
    Best regards

  • Why does my HD camera go offline (unusable) until I power-off for 5 minutes or more?

I have a MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011.  I've had it for about a month.
After some use, the HD camera will go offline to all applications and doesn't show up in the USB tree:
    https://skitch.com/pglombardo/f7yt9/macbook-pro
Facetime reports: "There is no connected camera."
PhotoBooth reports: "There is no connected camera."
Evernote just Hangs when I try to create an iSight note but occasionally says: "Camera Off/Plug in a camera to take a snapshot."
It appears that after the 4th or 5th time that the camera initializes for use (regardless of application) the camera goes offline and disappears from the USB tree.
The thing is that if I power down my laptop for about 5 minutes or more the camera returns to normal working order.  If I do an immediate restart, the camera will not come back.
It's almost as if the power from the USB Bus has to completely drain for the camera to re-initialize.
I've read many other threads and have tried resetting the SMC which have had no affect on the symptoms or the work-around.
The only work-around that I'm aware currently of is to power down for 5 minutes or more.
Any help and input would be appreciated.  Thanks.

    LOL
I have a MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011.  I've had it for about a month.
Which os did it come with?  As far as I know, the newer Macs do not come with 10.6.7.  Either they come with Lion or the last version of Snow Leopard-10.6.8.
Have you contacted the camera manufacturer to confirms it's compatible with the os that is installed on your computer?  Any drivers you need to download and install?

  • Substitution SBWP turned off for Travel and Entertainment

    Dear SAP Experts,
Is there a way to shut the substitution functionality down alltogether for Travel and Entertainment?
Can substitution be restricted to certain SAP areas (i.e Invoice approvals)?
Can substitution in T&E be restricted by security roles not restricting in the same time substitution in other areas (AP approvals)?
I would be very thankful for help on this.

  • Sleep or Power Off

The little book says Shut Down when you're going to be away from the machine for a day or two. I know I almost always leave my iMac in sleep, but do I really want to be walking around with the MBP in a laptop bag while it's in sleep mode, or do I want to shut it down?

personally i leave it n sleep but then again the only times i take my machine any where it to class to take notes with it so i dont want to shut down and lose all the web sties i have open and have to reopen all the applications had or was working on.
if your traveling long distances or will have it away for a long time and you dont really need/want to keep all your stuff open you should probably turn it off. if the machine was hot right before you put it away it has the potential to over heat in the case and all that good stuff so turning it off would probably be better to help it cool down but its kinda a toss up just really depends on how long you are going to have it away.

  • Lid won't latch - powerbook won't wake from sleep, must power off and on -

the catch on the lid of this 12" Powerbook G4 does not come out when the lid is closed; it can be brought out with a small tool. what is going on? the computer does not wake from sleep eitherl, must be turned off with power button and then turned on. If only the display is set to sleep, then it wakes up as expected. Are the two related? Is this a case for resetting the Power Management Unit, I could not be sure from the Apple article.

    Bob:
Try starting up in Safe Mode, logging into your account, emptying Trash, then rebooting normally. I have found this helpful when I have had sleep problems with my Pismo.
Is this a case for resetting the Power Management Unit,
    Wouldn't hurt to try.
In terms of your latch, it is likely a mechanical problem. When the tongue is pulled out try putting a very small amount of lubricant on the tongue and working it back and forth.
    Good luck.

  • Betreff: Helix, windows 8.1. Sleep and power off not working correctly.

I'm still havin issues booting my computer when docked or using standby when docked. I've set my computer to allways hibernate to disk as this lessens the problems for me when the computer hangs during bootup. The information is still there on the disk when you try to bootup several times.
The backdraw is that boot is really slow and it I can tell you that it's really not making a good impression when you bring the computer to a presentation and people ask about it.

    Hi WooHooMe
i tried fixing it but had no luck, although it was fixed for a brief time. I think the problem is with the wireless driver. I think if you uninstall the intel pro set wireless software and then disable the network adapter(from device manager) reboot and re-enable the issue should be fixed. My problem was that afterwards i tried sharing media from my desktop and the problem resurfaced.. So it was a short win.
other things i tried is disabling the homegroup services(from control panel-->administrative tools-->services), opening cmd with administrator rights and typing "powercfg -requests" to see if there was anything blocking sleeping.
Anyway if you want to fix the shutdown issue, just disable fast startup from power options! It will shut down correctly but sleep will still have a problem.
The other problem i have is i can't refresh windows. My usb recovery drive won't be recognised, and a win8 cd i had wouldn't help also(something about the windows drive being locked).
If you have virtual box installed you could also check this http://gurustop.net/blog/2013/09/11/windows-8-1-sleep-stand-by-hang-freeze-unable-to-wake-up-virtual...
That's what i got so far, hope it helps, till someone who knows a bit more solves the issue.

  • Where can I get a iPhone 5s power adapter for travel to Great Britain?

We are traveling to Great Britain this summer and understand that we will need an English power adapter to charge our iPhone 5s.  Can anyone recommend where I can get one????

The UK requires the 3x large pin adapter for the UK wall sockets

  • Power requirements for travel to the UK

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to travel to the UK with a Think pad X60s?  What would be the best power cord and can an external battery charger be used to charge up a battery?  Can the battery be left on to charge long enough without overheating?
    Thanks!

The AC power supplies that come with ThinkPads are designed to work on both North American (110VAC, 60Hz) and European (240VAC, 50Hz) power sources. They adapt to available power automatically, i.e. there are no switches or other configuration for you to worry about. The only thing you will need is an adapter to convert the standard NA 2-prong plug to the UK's larger 3-prong plug. You can buy such adapter at any travel accessories shop here or in Europe. BTW if your travel plans include the continent then you'll need another adapter with 2 round pins for that. See AC power plugs and sockets especially Type G (UK) and Type C (Europlug).

  • Does sleep mode power off ext. HD?

I've got a My Book. The instructions say it only powers down if you unplug it, however the light turns off when I put the computer in sleep mode. It's powering down, right? (I've heard bad stories about external hard drives practically exploding because they're on all day long.)
    Thanks.

    Hi there,
I don't think you have too much to worry about just as long as both your Mac and MyBook go through wake/sleep cycles properly. I've got an external and the lights go completely off when my Mac goes into deep sleep, prior to deep sleep, the external HD light does slowly "pulsate"...

  • Sleep vs Power Off - battery usage?

on my 2nd gen iPod Touch, being in sleep mode when not using (rather than powering off) doesn't seem to significantly affect battery charge - i.e., little if any battery charge loss is noticed
So, on a 5th gen iPod Touch, does sleep mode (e.g., overnight) significantly drain the battery or would it be more like my 2nd gen experience?
    Thank you

Because when sleeping the 5G/iOS 6 and 7 are doing more and thus draining the battery faster.
