Sleep problem with iMacs

I am happy owner of 2.8 GHz Intel iMac except with one nagging problem. When I leave my computer in the SLEEP mode for more than 24 hours it tends to not respond and WAKE when I return to use it. I have to unplug power and restart. Since I usually use my computer daily, it's not a major issue -- although it always makes me worry when I have any consistent issue with my computer
And it's not just me. I convinced my father and a close friend to purchase iMacs (PC users) last year as well. They have the same problem. It's worst for them because they are more casual users and often don't use their computers on a daily basis. They all have the exact same issues and are very unhappy about it. They both have the low end machines and have nothing but printers attached to them. I have done searches on the web and it seems like this issue happens occasionally, but it is not necessarily a common iMac issue. My experience is it's a problem with all of the iMacs (3 out of 3) we have purchased.
Anyone have any suggestions?

Here's something you can try:
Delete the following items in the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ folder:
com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
com..apple.AutoWake.plist
Also delete the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file
Reboot the computer.
If one or more of the above are not present, don't worry about it.
What if any third-party peripherals do you use besides the printer? Does this problem persist if the printer is not connected? What if any third-party software do you have installed on your computer?

  • Sleep problem with iMac Duo Core

    I purchased this 20" iMac Duo Core five days ago. Whenever the iMac enter sleep mode with pulsating indicator light below the screen, waking up the iMac always cause complete reboot of iMac. Is this a known issue with 20" iMac Core Duo or there is some problems in configuration under System Preferences ? The SMC firmware was updated from version 1.1f2 to 1.1f5 for installing Windows XP through Boot Camp Assistant in a NTFS disk partition.

    Thank you for the useful lead. The problem has been resolved by executing System Management Controller (SMC) reset procedure outlined in support site. Further monitoring on behaviour of the SMC is required. Hopefully this power management problem is not as big as with first generation iMac G5 I used to own. No idea whether latest SMC firmware update released by Apple resolve this problem though I have applied the update for Windows installation through Boot Camp.

    I have a problem with Imac mid 2010 graphics card (ATI Radeon 5670 512MB). When I play video formats like xvid, mkv, avi iMac freezes and emits horrible sound,in service said the problem is not overheating. Not a problem with memory or hard disk because I placed second correct parts.The same problem is with OSX 10.6.8 and 10.8.4 and other players.Apple hardware test found no problem and tech tool pro found no fault.
    After five days of testing in the service they can not  found fault and it was decided to change the graphics card.
    New graphics have been tested for two days but it is not reproduced divx ... but their test software which did not find any fault on the old graphics...
    Do I have the right to complain if repair does not fix the problem because I use non apple softwere and video formats.

    You could look at the System Profile for the info it presents for the card.  But why wouldn't you think it's not up to date if you have the latest install (according to your sig above)?
    What program are you trying to run?  Is there anything in the system log? 
    I think it's the program that's having the problem and not anything with your video software.

  • Problems with iMac retina 5K (artifacts, glitches and etc.)

    Hello dear Apple.
    I have bought new iMac with retina 5K display and I have found lot of problem with it. It was December 2014 when I got my first iMac. And after then I have found few real problems with it.
    The first problem is I can't open high resolution image with standard Preview.app. I mean 'high resolution' - more then 30-40 megapixels. When I open them, I can see image, but only 2-3 seconds, and after that I see horizontal artifacts only. I can't open images, like this Rembrandt.jpg; Carpaccio.jpg; Holbein.jpg
    The second problem, when I change resolution in to scaled mode (System Preferences/Display) for increase image on display. I found when select some area on background of desktop it has left some lines after itself. It is particularly unpleasant if you have plain colour desktop background.     The next problem with animation in different parts of interface, e.g. sometimes when I open Time Machine some parts of windows are freezing or appear some artifacts or glitches near borders of window. And I have the same situation, when I open Mission Control, or any Adobe app or other, or simply rename a files. I have found few discussions with problems like mine, but in the separate places

    And after that I want to tell you that I have this problems on four (4) iMacs. It was really difficult to arrange four replace. I have lost a lot of time an spent a lot of nerves for discuss and resolve my problems with Apple support. Finally, they told me that they do not know about problems with iMacs, and they could offer give my money back. I glad to get my funds, but now in my country price for iMacs has doubled. And if they refund my money, I can buy half new iMac only.
    I am sorry for my language and style, but I do not know what I should doing with that. And should I hope, that my problem resolve with OS X updates? Or it is hardware problem of the whole iMacs 5K...

    Yes Ralph, absolutely correct, 4 times. Do you have the graphic card the same as me, or m290? Could I ask you check your iMac for few things, please?
    For the first, can you enlarge scale in System preference/Display and install plain dark color desktop background. Are there any footprints after rectangular selection like in my video https://youtu.be/dBglFvjJx1Q?

  • Sleeping Problem With ACD 27"

    I have a sleeping problem with my 27" ACD that is connected to a 2010 Mac Pro and a Macbook Pro. The display is set to sleep after 5 minutes and it appears to be sleeping. The screen goes black but on closer inspection with a flash light, you can still see the login screen or any open window.

    Can anyone confirm this problem by trying the steps below?
    1.) Have the Apple 27 ACD connected to a 2010 Mac Pro with the latest Mac OS X update(10.6.6).
    2.) Go into the Energy Saver and set the Display to sleep at 1 minute and have computer sleep set to never.
    3.) Leave the System Preferences window open and wait for the display to sleep.
    4.) Once you see that the display is asleep flash a light directly on the screen where you left the System Preferences window open.

    I discovered this effect many weeks ago and just thought that's the way the display "sleeps". A possibly simpler way to reproduce the effect is to select a hot corner to put the display to sleep (using the Hot Corners... button in the Desktop & Screen Save preferences). Put the mouse in the selected hot corner to put the display to sleep and then shine the flashlight on the screen. You'll see an "echo" (? - pick a term of your choice) of whatever is on the screen at the time it's put to "sleep".
    I don't normally use the hot corners feature since I quickly discovered I would sometimes move the mouse into there inadvertently and it was annoying when the screen blacked out. I don't consider this a "problem" though. After all how many folks shine flashlights at their ACD? I'm not sure what I was thinking to prompt me to ever do it in the first place.
    I was once jokingly going to post about never shining flashlight at the ACD simply because you can then see every smudge and smear on the glass It would then start to drive you nuts trying to get 'em all off!

  • Many problems with Imac

    I've had my iMac for a little over a year and now I am having problems with programs not opening, but then not being able to close. the arrow is under them but no matter how many times I force quit it won't close. Happens mainly with Toast and Itunes. Also, sometimes the computer will go to sleep and I can't get it to wake up. when this happens the fan just goes crazy. I have reset permissions and verified permissions. I have run the OSX disk with hardware utility and everything checks out fine. Will I have to reformat or just not use it anymore?

    Sometimes zapping the P-RAM helps:
    1. After the startup tone, hold down <cmd><opt><r> until 3 additional startup tones are heard, then release the 4 keys.
    Sometimes doing the Open Firmware resets helps:
    1. After the startup tone hold down <cmd><opt><O><F> until a text screen appears (that's the letter Oh, not the number zero).
    2. When you can start typing, enter the following commands, following each command by pressing <return>.
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
    reset-all
    The mac will start normally at this point.
    If still not successful, try this as well:
    After the startup tone, hold down the <shift> key until you (hopefully) reach the desktop. This start is called "Safe Start" and it will be longer than normal, because Disk Utility's "repair" is invisibly run; it also will bypass any login items. If the system gets to the desktop OK this time but stalls when the shift key is NOT held down, the problem may be some login item that will need to be removed, using the Accounts panel of System Preferences and its Login Items section.
    If none of these suggestions work, you may be required to perform an Archive and Install re-installation of the Mac OS. This is one of the options presented by the OS installer when you run it, and it preserves all your settings, data and added programs, but puts a new copy of the OS on the hard drive from which to boot.

  • Problem with iMac quality

    I  own a 27" iMac that is just less than 4 years old, and where after sending it for repair with Apple in Denmark was told that it needed a new graphics card for DKK 2899 - approx. USD 490.00.
    I found out that the iMac is produced at a factory in Shanghai called W8 where Apple have had problems with exact same issue in the past, and it seems had agreed to extended warranty replacement to fix these problems.
    Nevertheless I do  believe that Apple customers buy Apple products because we expect superior quality and no Apple customer would expect to have problems with a major component especially on such an expensive products and certainly not within 4 years.
    And if there were a seldom problem with a unit that Apple would rather step up to the plate and stand behind their products quality.
    In my case it seems Apple - or at least Apple in Denmark - is unwilling to do so even though they acknowledge that it very seldom happen

    Do you have a support system in Denmark to protect customers from problems with products and services.  If so advance your complaint there.  Irrespective of the warranty, here in the UK you can get official help against any supplier of goods that are faulty up to six years from purchase.  But you must be reasonable in your approach.  Apple's warranty promise specifically allows for this  when it says ...

  • MacBook Pro 15" Late 2011 Problems with iMac 27" Late 2009 TDM

    I just got problems with my iMac 27" Late 2009 (Mini-DisplayPort) and my MacBook Pro 15" Late 2011 (Thunderbolt).
    When I try to use my iMac as external monitor for my MacBook, there are massive glitches and graphical bugs on my second screen.
    I bought a MDP-to-MDP wire from Belkin which works perfect on other computers.
    I tried these things:
    - Disconnected MagSafe from MacBook + unplugged all USB devices + switched graphics to discrete.
    - Shut down all computers ... then booted MBP, iMac and triggered CMD+F2
    - SMC, PRAM reset on both devices
    The cable works, because:
    17" MacBook Pro Late 2011 works perfectly on my iMac screen with my Belkin wire!
    I connected my MacBook Pro 15" to a 27" Cinema Display and it works flawless.
    After that I plugged it out and tested it again with my iMac screen -> suddenly it works.
    Retriggering CMD+F2 or replugging breaks it again with massive bugs.
    The MacBook Pro 17" is on 10.7.2, 15" is on 10.7.3, but I also tried to trigger dual screen in 10.7.0 setup with the same issue.
    Maybe its a problem with the internal 6750M of my MacBook Pro 15"?
    The 6770M of the 17" is working well.

    i tried to call the apple store (indonesia) which i bought this imac 27" from. got transfered 4 times and i had to explain it to them all over. in the end i got to speak to the technician and i asked whether i can get a replacement and they don't think it's the correct solution and leave me hanging here.

    i called the apple support on the apple.com (0018 03061 2009 for indonesia) today wednesday 19 may 2010, time 1:12pm indonesia local time (GMT +7) i didn't get the guy's name but i can tell he's Indian from the accent, i told him what the problem is, he told me to wait, i waited for 10 minutes and he hung up on me at 1:24pm. please check on the record, because i was told the whole conversation was recorded.
    so, let's go to the problem:
    i can't share my internet with airport built-in in my imac 27".
    I'm using ZTE usb hsdpa modem connected to the imac. (fyi, my friend is using the same exact modem and internet provider and don't have any problems with internet sharing using his macbook)
    i tried to share the internet through the airport express simply with these steps:
    1. open the system preferences, internet sharing,
    2. connection with "ZTE usb modem", and the box next to "Airport" is ticked
    3. turn on the internet sharing
    4. press start
    5. yes the firewall is off.
    and these are what i'm having right now:
    1. the airport symbol wont turn into an arrow
    2. when i open the network preferences, it says: AirPort is turned on but is not connected to a network. (color is orange not green)
    3. i searched the wireless network with my ipod touch and i found nothing
    4. if i try to "create a network" here's what it says "There was an error creating your computer-to-computer network."

    If you have anything configured in System Preferences/Network/Airport then you have conflicts configured into the network. I suggest that you start from the beginning. Do not assume anything. Do not take any short cuts. Start fresh.
    Go to Sys Prefs/Sharing turn off Internet Sharing. Go to Sys Prefs/Network, highlight AirPort and press the - symbol below to remove the AirPort interface. Now press the + symbol and create a new AirPort Interface. In the new AirPort interface do not turn on AirPort. You should only select the box to show AirPort Status in the menu bar. Now press Apply.
    Go to Sys Prefs/Sharing and follow the steps 1 through 11 in my first post.
    In step 11 Sys Prefs should ask you to turn on AirPort. Turn it on. It should next ask you to start Internet Sharing. Start Internet Sharing.
    The AirPort Status in the menu bar should show AirPort is on and have an arrow pointing up. In the AirPort Status dropdown menu it should show AirPort is ON, Internet Sharing is ON and it should show the name of the Internet Sharing network that you created.

  • Reboot problems with iMac dual intel 1.83 OS 10.4.6

    Needing help. Mac user since 1999 but I'm feeling like a novice with this. Wife was playing Sims 2 when it locked up and wouldn't allow the game to be turned off. Did a forced restart, disk went to the grey screen with the spinning gear for an extended period. Went to bed and the next morning the blue screen was on with OS X label as if computer was booting successfully but the hard drive sounded as if it was stuck in a loop. Got the installation disc and figured out how to eject the game and install the disc. Did safe boot and computer will goto the grey screen with the spinning gear and then will turn itself off.
    Tried to reinstall OS X 10.4.4 while archiving in a separate folder and after verifying the disc the install fails. Ran hardware check came back o.k. Tried to boot from install disc and it just takes me back to the install disc start-up. Ran disc utility to repair premissions and it hung up after 30 minutes and the hard drive sounded like it was stuck in a loop. Ran disc utility to repair hard drive, first checks came back o.k. and then stated it was not completed due to an underlying issue when it tried to back out.
    The hard drive is partitioned from boot camp, deleted windoze and tried to install OS X on the 20 gigs partitioned. The disc again verified but then failed- which threw me for a loop (does not appear dirty or scratched). My intention was to boot up on the partition and then try to retrieve pictures and videos on the hard disc, unfortunately only 1/2 is currently backed up.
    I have not tried fsck yet because I was confused how to get to it, I think I am supposed to use the start up disc and go to the terminal application then enter the command, is this correct?
    Unfortunately I am having to type this at work while the computer is at home- so if there are suggestions please dump them on me and I will try all of them tonight. No broken folders, kernal panics or exclamation points thus far.

    When you verified with disk utility the disk, you basically ran fsck. Permissions are another factor here, but the fact it failed the disk check suggest major directory problems with the hard disk. Unfortunately the only third party directory repair utilities that I know work well currently are for PowerPC Macs only. If you have another Mac, suggest putting the iMac in target disk mode and see if it is seen by the other Mac. The target disk mode is described by this article:

    If it is, then you can recover your data.
    If it is not, my suggestion is to get an external Firewire hard drive, and Prosoft Data Rescue and see if it is able to recover the information to it.

    My suggestion is to find a way to completely and safely remove Boot Camp and only use it on non-production machines.
    I don't think your problem is an online networking issue, which I see you posted in that forum.

  • Weird display problem with iMac 24"

    Hi guys, I have a very weird problem with my 24" iMac. For some reason it seems that after approx. 10 minutes using the Mac, whenever I keep a window on top of another window and then I minimize it, it keeps there like a ghost for another 5-10 seconds until it fades away slowly slowly.
    Sometimes it's hard to see it however it's very evident when using a white window (such as Safari) on a dark background (not black).
    I'm attaching an image split into 2 parts, the 2nd part is shot exactly after I minimised the browser. It clearly shows a faded ghost image on the grey Photoshop canvas.

    Has anyone ever experienced a problem similar to mine? or am I getting paranoid?
    By the way, I bought this Mac, 5 months ago and I don't know whether this problem has been there from the beginning but I only noticed recently while cropping in Photoshop and still seeing the parts I removed away very faded.

    den.thed it's not that I took it the wrong way or anything but shouldn't I be doing whatever I like with my iMac?
    For the record that is a dark grey Photoshop canvas, which just happens to show the problem much more evidently.
    The problem is that it happens on any background (even desktop) with any window, even Adium etc. Their ghost just stays there for a while... I use the iMac for design purposes and it's very annoying especially when cropping a picture and what I just cut out stays there very faded...

    If you cannot get it to boot you will need to take it into an Apple Store or AASP to be fixed.

  • Problem with iMacs loading web pages slowly after a power failure

    We have 3 intel Macs (2 iMacs and a MB) on our network.
    Today we had a power failure, and now we are having problems with both iMacs loading some web pages slowly (in Safari and Firefox both). I have shutdown and restarted both iMacs to no avail. As you will notice, I have not experienced any problems with my MB probably because the battery never allowed it to shut down completely.
    Can you give me any indication of what the problem is or how I can go about troubleshooting this further?

    It does sound like it could be a WiFi issue. You can try rebooting your router and that might help. It just might your Internet connection or the router itself. If the router is bad, you can replace it. If its the Internet connection - you can only do what you ISP allows you to do.

    I can't use the mouse or anything else, and after a while the fans start to go on max. This is the second time I encounter this problem within 30 days. What I have noticed is that the day before, the brightness of the screen started to "blink" slightly -- like if the screen tried to adjust itself.
    But I haven't experienced what Bob North describes as the: "Upon boot, the dispaly appears normal, but within 5-10 minutes, either at desktop or in ASD, the normal display will "crash" to the "plaid" display".
    I just restart with the power button and everything is working OK. I made an Extended Hardware test without any problems detected.

    My nearly 3 year old Titanium PowerBook G4 just did this one day, out of the blue. The problem went away after a few minutes, but I had already taken photos. Thanks to those photos, Apple gave the powerbook a new logic board.
    (This PowerBook has had its logic board replaced twice, a new optical drive, and a cracked case edge replaced. AppleCare has more than paid for itself. Despite the occasional problems, I remain very happy with this machine. I'm sure I'd be much less happy if I had not bought AppleCare!)

    What troubleshooting methods have you tried to solve your issue?
