Sleep problems with a MacBookPro6,2 with OSX 10.6.7
Hi everybody,
I'm yet another pal with sleep problems on my MacBookPro6,2 (Core i5 mid 2010).
After a few hours of activity it refuses to sleep. It just wakes instantly, with the same info on the kernel.log as
many other are seeing on theirs:

I have nothing plugged in my MacBookPro, other than the power cord.
I have tried all the tips I've seen, like resetting the PRAM and the SMC.
I even did a reinstall of the entire OS X (SnowLeopard 10.6.7) although I did recover all my apps and settings from TimeMachine.
It is really annoying and I am beginning to think there is some issue in the USB code within OSX's kernel.
The only thing I can think of I have not tried is not running Firefox, which is always open.
But I don't see how that might interfere with the usb hub on the motherboard issuing a wakeup.
I don't remember ever having this issue on my first generation MacBookPro.
All the info I've found is minimum a few months old, going back to a few years for problems with external hubs.
Does anyone know anything else to try? Is this the best way to make Apple know about the issue?
Solution found for me. From Adobe Acrobat & Reader 9.1 Release Notes:
Roaming Profiles on Windows and Networked Home Directory on Macintosh
are not supported configurations for 9.0 or 9.1, however we have made
several fixes in 9.1. We are looking at the possibility of supporting
this for the next major release.
As I am working with roaming profiles, my current solution (which is no solution at all) is to wipe current and reinstall Acrobat/Reader 8. Among other things there are supposed console hacks to make the purchased Adobe software run at all in a group work environment. I will end up trying them later.

After waiting a few days to download OS X Mountain lion, I finally installed it on my new MacBook with retina display a couple days ago. I love the interface and all the new features, but I've noticed some problems I really need to resolve. I'm constantly downloading large files and I noticed thhis change:
Before, on Lion, I could download files from Safari or the Internet and the computer would sleep whenever it was set to on energy preferences and the download would resume. This would let the computer conserve energy so the download could progress further when on battery. Now, I noticed that my computer never goes to sleep! Its set to have the display sleep in 5 minutes and the computer in 15 on both battery and when plugged in, but it never does either. I don't know if it has to do with the fact that power nap is on even when using battery. So now the Mac is constantly on when downloading something and instead of downloading a one gigabyte file that would take up 15% of my battery, it takes up 60% since it never sleeps. When I tried downloading something and then manually putting the computer to sleep, the download was interrupted and it said Wi-Fi connection lost so I have to start the download over again.
That's basically all three problems in one situation. I even put the brightness all the way on low so the screen is black when downloading, but it still uses up much more battery than before. Can someone help find a solution?Did you try turning off power nap?

Possible reason for the iMac G5 with 10.4.3 Sleep Problems
Ok first off let me say that I got this new iMac G5 20" about 4 days ago. It's wonderful. If anyone out there is holding out for the intel machines, don't wait, get a G5. It's a fantastic machine. Now on to the meat of the subject. The story goes like this; I hooked up my Plextor PVR with eyeTV to my iMac to see how well it would do (been using it with a P4 Windoze XP machine and my iBook G4 14" with no problems). It worked just great. No problems with the iMac, the PVR or any of my other addons (including the boatload of software I migrated over from the iBook). So I set up EyeTV to record some stuff while I was asleep. It's supposed to wake up the Mac, record the shows then the Mac goes back to sleep. Easy huh? Well the wakeup, record part went just fine but the Mac wouldn't go back to sleep. Perplexed (actually thrilled, this is where I have my most fun with new machines, figuring out why they aren't working correctly) I did all the standard "I can't get my Mac to sleep automatically" things. You know, blow away all the plist files that have anything to do with powermanagement and autowake, reset NVRAM from OF, reset the PRAM (3 times just like the old days), reset the SMU, blow away all the Bluetooth plist files, etc, etc. Did them all, don't suggest any, I did them all I swear, really. I've been through this kind of thing before. One big difference with this iMac. Nothing and I mean nothing would work to fix the problem. The only way the bad boy would sleep is by hitting the Power button for a second or selecting "Sleep" from the Apple menu. Hmmmm. Spent the better part of a morning reading every thread here about peoples problems like mine. One post and I mean exactly one had something I hadn't tried. I rebooted the Mac in Safe Mode (hold the shift key down while it boots until you get the login screen with the red text "Safe Mode".) I forgot that OSX even did that. Logged in as myself (normal login but still in safe mode) and low and behold the thing would sleep automatically! I repeated this (boot in normal mode, boot in safe mode) many times. Every single time the Mac would sleep from safe mode but not from normal mode. Tells me it's software not hardware. In each mode I run "Activity Monitor" and save a list of the running processes to a text file. Now compare them and shutdown each process that is different one at a time. To make this story somewhat shorter (heh) I finally found that I could consistantly make the machine sleep or not sleep by killing the "mdimport" process and restarting it. This has to do with Spotlight. To be exact, it's the process that imports Metadata into Spotlights data list (I'm no expert, have a basic understanding of this). So on a hunch I ran the terminal and entered the command to delete then rebuild Spotlights databases, "mdutil -E /". Then I let Spotlight rebuild that databases and rebooted. Guess what? The iMac sleeps perfectly now, go figure. I did this once so far and the Mac has been working correctly now for about 5 hours. I've got a feeling that the problem will come back. Especially if it's an inherent problem in Spotlight and the 10.4.3 upgrade. I don't seem to have this problem with 10.4 or earlier. Long post I know but I thought it could help someone out. Please post any comments. I'd like to know if what I did is coincidence (I really don't think so since I reproduced it many times) or not.

iBook G4 1Gig, iMac G5 2.1 Gig, iMac 266 Mac OS X (10.4.3) iMac 266 running 10.3.6, been using Macs since the '80sRight guy's i to have researched this problem
concerning my auto sleep problem.I started off by
following Joeaux's original post by safe
booting, noting what was running in the activity
monitor, booting normaly and again noting what was
running now.I eliminated the same processes that were
running from both boots, and then started quiting one
by one, the extra processes, from the normal boot, in
activity monitor.Once you quit a process, allow the
computer to try to go to sleep i.e set energy saver
to 1minute and wait to see what happens.I tried the "
mdimport"as of Joeaux but this was not my problem. In
my case the sleep problem was down to two
applications called N67U_ButtonManager and
N124U_ButtonManager.These are for use with my Canon
scanner.I also noted that if i left the scanner
connected to the computer this would also stop it
going to sleep, even after deleting the two
applications.Hope this helps!
Thank you now i know that those login items are for my scanner, and not logic audio i am a little less angry(Logic is now an apple application but the version I run was from the emagic days and i presumed that the button managers were from this app as it was the oldest bit of software running on my machine) By the way any apps that may cause a problem like this are more than likely simply residing in your user login items and can be disabled from there permanently as far as i can see. -
Sleeping problem with OS X Lion?
I have a new 15 inch Macbook Pro that shipped with Lion which has recently succumbed to a sleeping problem. When I have the computer plugged in to the wall outlet for charging, and I close the lid, it goes to sleep, but the sleep light stays on solid; it does not blink/fade on and off. Then, under these same circumstances, when I open the lid, I see my login screen for about 1.5 seconds and then the screen goes black. If I click the F1 button to turn the screen brightness down, the login screen returns, and I can login and use the computer as normal with no issues. If I unplug the MagSafe charger and allow the computer to run on its battery, none of these issues occur.
AND all of the Energy Saver preferences are set to the default, and all sharing is disabled.
All help is sincerely appreciated,
JakeI have the exact same issue! I'm so glad it isn't just me having this problem ..
I also have a 15 inch Macbook Pro with OSX Lion.
I really don't know whether it's a new feature of Lion or a bug.
Sleep mode seems to be disabled while charging ...
If you put the Macbook Pro to sleep with the magsafe adapter plugged in, it won't go to sleep. You can still hear the fans running, and the light won't blink, as you indicated. When you open the lid again, the screen lights up for a few seconds, then turns black. I haven't tried the F1 key, but I do know the screen comes back when you unplug the adapter ...
And it's getting even stranger: when you close the lid with the magsafe adapter plugged in, my MBP won't go to sleep. But when you plug out the adapter while still having the lid closed, my MBP WILL go to sleep. When you plug the adapter back in while sleeping, it will still keep asleep but the battery WON'T charge, although the adapter 's connected (the light is green while it should be orange, since the battery is not fully charged).
None of these issues occur when you put the MBP to sleep without the power adapter connected; it goes to sleep seamlessly.
It seems to me that this could be a bug, but it could also be an extra safety feature of apple ..
Maybe they wanted to protect the battery this way? I hear a lot of people say it's bad to keep for your battery to keep your laptop plugged in all time, although I doubt it.
Someone who knows more about this, or has a fix for this 'bug' ? -
HELP... Since last week, I can not awake from sleep. After reading a review I downloaded Deep Sleep, but after the first deep sleep, my MBP (late 2011 with Mountain Lion), developed a problem restarting from sleep. I straight away uninstalled Deep Sleep, but the problem has increased.
Now when I try to awake from sleep, a grey screen with the apple logo appears with a progress bar underneath it, which slowly moves to the forelast indicator, then it stops and a audio signal starts. Three bleeps and pause.
Then when I press the on/off botton and restart the system, the underneath error reports appears with the heading RAPPORTD unexpectedly failed.
Can any one help?

MacBook Pro sleep problems with Vista SP1
Has anyone faced sleep problems on a MacBook Pro after installing Vista SP1?
I run Boot Camp 2.0 with the latest update from Apple.
IDT finally issued a compatible Vista driver for my Sigmatel audio.
I was very happy for the first time running Vista on my Apple when I had the stupid idea to upgrade to SP1.
After days of troubleshooting with Windows support it is obvious that SP1 and my MacBook Pro are incompatible for some obscure reasons. The latest time I tried SP1 was through Windows Update, which means that Windows detected no compatibility issues, such as drivers.
I suspect Apple-in-sight driver without any evidence, just a hint.
Any ideas?
ThanksHibernation seems iffy. Have you tried disabling hibernation? and when you say sleep, what happens? won't wake or what?
Normally I don't recommend resetting NVRAM or SMU but for sleep you might want to.
And yes, trying to rule out why can be difficult. But I would not blame SP1. Maybe BC 2.1.
Do you have a book dealing with Vista? or looked for articles or forums that deal with Vista? There is one for Vista64 - assume you have 32-bit though. Google is often best way to find things in Apple discussions or knowledge base, too.

I wanna reinstall Mac OSx lion on MacBook pro, my problem is I dint purchase OSx lion with my apple Id before.so anybody can tell me how to purchase OSx with my apple Id on MacBook
Nope. You can purchase a Snow Leopard DVD for $29.00 through an Apple retailer or ordering from AppleCare:

I have a sleeping problem with my 27" ACD that is connected to a 2010 Mac Pro and a Macbook Pro. The display is set to sleep after 5 minutes and it appears to be sleeping. The screen goes black but on closer inspection with a flash light, you can still see the login screen or any open window.
Here is a picture of what i'm experiencing http://www.flickr.com/photos/59070359@N04/5411570689/.
Can anyone confirm this problem by trying the steps below?
1.) Have the Apple 27 ACD connected to a 2010 Mac Pro with the latest Mac OS X update(10.6.6).
2.) Go into the Energy Saver and set the Display to sleep at 1 minute and have computer sleep set to never.
3.) Leave the System Preferences window open and wait for the display to sleep.
4.) Once you see that the display is asleep flash a light directly on the screen where you left the System Preferences window open.I discovered this effect many weeks ago and just thought that's the way the display "sleeps". A possibly simpler way to reproduce the effect is to select a hot corner to put the display to sleep (using the Hot Corners... button in the Desktop & Screen Save preferences). Put the mouse in the selected hot corner to put the display to sleep and then shine the flashlight on the screen. You'll see an "echo" (? - pick a term of your choice) of whatever is on the screen at the time it's put to "sleep".
I don't normally use the hot corners feature since I quickly discovered I would sometimes move the mouse into there inadvertently and it was annoying when the screen blacked out. I don't consider this a "problem" though. After all how many folks shine flashlights at their ACD? I'm not sure what I was thinking to prompt me to ever do it in the first place.
I was once jokingly going to post about never shining flashlight at the ACD simply because you can then see every smudge and smear on the glass It would then start to drive you nuts trying to get 'em all off!
\[Heh, I guess now everyone reading this thread it now pulling out flashlights \] -
Help with Optiarc AD-5630A causing sleep problems
I have an original Macbook pro 17" 2.16 Ghz Intel Core Duo, 120Gb hdd, 2Gb ram.
The original superdrive fried, so I had to replace it. I picked up an Apple MacBook Air external USB superdrive and removed the drive from the enclosure to replace my fried one. I believe my old drive was a mitsumi, the new one is a Sony NEC Optiarc AD-5630A with firmware 1CHQ
Ever since I replaced it, here's what's happening, and I can duplicate the problem reliably.
If I put the computer to sleep (closing the lid or otherwise) with a disc in the drive, it becomes un-responsive after the computer wakes. Console logs show a constantly looping error:
8/24/09 5:53:23 PM kernel IOATAController device blocking bus.
This error will loop endlessly several times per second until I restart the computer. In the meantime, nothing can access the drive and the OS struggles with the sleep/wake cycle. Usually, ejecting the disc will result in the OS succesfully unmounting the volume, but the eject signal is not reaching the drive, so the disc gets physically stuck in the drive until a restart. The drive functions normally at all other times.
Thinking the new drive was faulty, and following Applecare's suggestion, I replaced it with an identical unit, (actually the manufacture dates are only a month apart, September and October of 2008) but the problem still persists. At this point, I'm thinking that it's either a hardware compatibility problem or an incompatibility with the firmware version.
This is a fresh install of OS X Leopard 10.5.8 on a repartitioned and erased drive. All software is up to date. I have reset the PRAM.
This drive is (was) used in the newish iMacs, and obviously, the MacBook Air USB drive. Some googling shows that there are different firmware versions for this drive.
Anyone have any insight? Please? Help?
Here's the log entry from sleep to wake to the error:

Message was edited by: kevinroAnyone have any ideas? Anyone? If there's someone out there with a macbook pro using an internal optiarc drive, open system profiler and post your macbook pro model, what model number the drive is and what firmware the drive is running. Anyone? Please? (can you tell I'm desperate?)
aaron - was applecare of any assistance? It sounds like you've got a problem compounded by a vm. I can probaly help you out - I do mac IT work for a living. Does your IOATA error loop like mine does, or is it just a couple entries in the log?
To help narrow down the problem, shut down Windows and quit Fusion. Open console so you can watch the log. (make sure you aren't currently getting the IOATA error - if you are, restart) Then put your mac to sleep and wake it back up. See if you then get the looping error in the log. Whether the error is happening or not, make this behavior repeatable so you cna predict what's going to happen ie: restart, check log, sleep, wake several times so you know what's supposed to happen.
What we want to know is, does the error occur independently of Fusion, or only when fusion is running? -
my iPhoto icon has a cross over it, when i open it, it You have “iPhoto” 9.2.1. you can't use this with this version of OSX? it used to work ?what's gone wrong?
iPhoto 9.2.3 is incompatible with MacOS 10.9.3 Mavericks. If you are running Mavericks on your system you need to update iPhoto to 9.5.1. Only, the problem is, that this version is no longer available at the App Store.
The easiest way to get a compatible iPhoto version in that case would be to upgrade to Yosemite, MacOS X 10.10, and then download the most recent iPhoto version from the AppStore, iiPhoto 9.6, like LarryHN suggested.
If you cannot download iPhoto after upgrading to iPhoto 9.6 post back. -

Problem with permission disk errors
After re-installing White Tiger and After I installed the last OSX 10.6.5 update
I found the following problem
Group differs on "Applications / Utilities / AirPort Utility.app / Contents / Resources / wanArrow.png", should be 0 instead of 80.
Last but not least :
My computer seems slow - I have 60gig free on My hard drive and I test my hard drive and everything seems all good .What was the fix for this? Everything has sucked for my itunes video playback since the last major revision release.

Printing problems with InDesign CS3 with Mac OS 10.6.3
I am not new to InDesign... I have CS3... but I am brand new to Mac Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.3). Although I can open CS3 and use the application, I cannot print with it. None of my other applications has printing issues... just CS3. Any suggestions?
RichardHi again Peter
It is version 5.0.4. I updated it when I newly installed it a week ago in my new computer, and then again updated it just yesterday.
I might mention that before I got my new computer, I was running Mac OS 4.11, and was using InDesign 3.0. I had bought InDesign CS3 about a year ago, but hadn't gotten around to using it since version 3.0 had been working fine, and I was used to it. Then, when I got my new computer, I decided it was time to use the newer version. However, while using InDesign 3.0 with the old Mac OS 4.11, a printing problem popped up there, too, a few months ago... and it also involved printing problems with Adobe Reader. I contacted Adobe, and they sent me a patch which fixed it. I will contact Adobe again if need be, although I thought I'd start here first to see if it was a common enough problem that someone might be able to provide a free and routine answer.

I neglected to ask what version of indesign CS3 you are using. I also
notice that Mac OSX 10.6.4 has just been released. It actually
addresses some CS3-specific issues, though they seem to be related to
launching the apps, not printing. It may be worth trying to update,
nonetheless.

2 problem when syncing iphone with my mac.
On the last days whenever I connect my iPhone (2G 3.0) to my Mac (10.6.1) I get a message "applemobiledevicehelper quit unexpectedly". All I need to do is just click 'ignore' and then everything works fine with iTunes (9.0.1).
The problem is iPhoto (8.2), I cant see my iphone there. iPhoto isn't recognizing my iPhone.
This problem is also right with Image Capture.
Please any assistance. Before you upgrade beyond 10.6.8 as in Michael Allbrittons post you need to have 10.6.8 on your computer.
Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac". Write down what it says about "version"and report that here. Now continue to "More Info..." Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).
If you have a PPC Mac you cannot sync your idevice without a newer computer. See the end of this post for options.
If it says you have an Intel Mac you can upgrade to Snow Leopard, but check system requirements first:
Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
You can buy Snow Leopard at:
Snow Leopard disc source - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
After installing run the updater to 10.6.8, then upgrade iTunes.
Jan. 2014 post by Kappy on doing all this: https://discussions.apple.com/message/24599931
Options if you cannot upgrade: iTunes Store purchases can already be downloaded directly. Use iTunes Match to put non-Store music in iCloud, then download to your device from there. Backup your device directly to iCloud over a wireless connection. Photos can be downloaded from the Camera Roll using iPhoto or Image Capture.
Incidentally, the post referenced by Michael Allbritton is two years old. If you can install Snow Leopard and your computer is new enough you also have the option to go straight to the latest OSX, Mavericks, for free, but that's another topic. -
My network symbol keeps working on my home page even when I'm not doing anything, I know there has been problems in the past with this so has it come back, help it's killing my battery!
Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss) -
My FaceTime doesn't work... I would call a person, they would accept, and then I would be stuck in a never ending "connecting".. And this problem has been according with not just my ipad, but with other people's iDevices that I know.
-My wifi connection is running strong
-All the devices run the same version of iOSTry this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
