Sleep vs No Sleep-What's you choice & why?

How many choose to sleep thier Mac Pro and are there any issues. If so what?
(Please explain your set up. Example: Never sleep but do use screen saver and this works great. Or always used to sleep but it caused a lot of problems like...)

Mine runs all day with the display set to "sleep" after 20 min. At night I manually put the computer to sleep. I used to have it set to auto sleep after 20 min but, depending on what I had connected, the auto sleep was erratic and I got tired of having to plug and unplug my scanner or my card reader or whatever and never knowing for sure that the computer would sleep. The Mac Pro is quiet enough that it is not a problem to just leave it on.

    Hi,
    I am posting this as an information exercise and not a criticism.
    Most Forums now have a Recent Users Tip section above the Post New Topic link and the Topic List itself.
    In some cases the info you want is there.
    I hope you and others find this useful.

  • My mac won't wake up from sleep, what can i do

    My mac won't wake up from sleep, what can i do

    Can you say more about thermal cut-off?  My mac has beene having problems waking from sleep and I have noticed that I hear the fan running ever so slightly in the background.  When I depress the power button for a second the fan shuts off.
    Just open the side an dlook to see which fan it is.  The lower fands are easy to see as well as the video card fan.
    When you push the power button and that fan goes off is the machine now fully off?  No power light?  No fans spinning?   Now drives spinning?
    I don't recall what I did when my machine shut off with the one exhaust fan running.  I think the obvious thing I would have tried would have been to push power button for 10 seconds to shut it down fully.  That or actually pull the plug.
    When this happens the only way to use my Mac is to restart via the power button.
    Then I guess that answers the first question.  It must have turned off since pushing the power button again was the normal reboot.
       I can't find any helpful info on thermal cut-off so I was wondering if you could explain what it is, what causes it, and more importantly what I can do to fix it?
    That was my term for it.  What else could it be?  Without its fan video card would get extremely hot and throw off all that heat.  Whats the point of having temperature sensors in so many places other than to use that info to protect the machine against damage due to overheating?  So my assumption was card gets hot, sensor (probably the pci slot 1 temperature sensor) senses it, kills the machine.  It's also seems logical to me that the circuit(s) handling temperature overloads would want to keep a exhaust fan running to dump the heat out of the machine to further protect any damage from the heat.

  • When taking a picture with home button and sleep button can you get rid of the tool and task bar??

    When taking a picture with home and sleep button can you get rid of the tool and task bar?? (the search bars)

    No, but you can use any picture editing tool to crop out the bars.  (Many are free in the App Store.)  Me personally, I use PhotoPad, which I use to crop as well as rotate the screen shot.  Takes less than a minute to do both with PhotoPad.

  • Do you use UML if so what is your choice

    HI,
    If you plan to do complex project with AS3/Flex, do you guys use UML tools?
    The support list of leading products (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UML_tools) in this field didn't saw AS3 (never gota the money enough them anyway), but, I found:
    http://www.uml4as.com/flower-platform/ UML4AS, which seems to be in a early version number
    What do you use for UML?

    Enterprise Architect is my choice. It is not free after the trial period but it is very feature rich.

  • What do you think of my Bash Script? What about the error checking?

    Well what do you think of this Bash script
    It works
    I gave it some problems (i.e. unpluged the ethernet, messed up the URL's, uninstaled some programs...) to see if would report errors and stop or just keep going... But it did
    I just kind of thought up a way to do some error checking with the commands that I know.....
    What is a better way to do error checking?
    What do you think I should add/Do to this script?

    Personally.....  (this is just how I would have written it - if it works, then it's good enough for me though )
    I would change this whole block:
    verify="n"
    while [ "$verify" != y ]
    do
    printf "Do you have mbr installed... yes or no?"
    read AN1
    echo ""
    printf "You answered... $AN1 I have installed mbr. Is this correct... y or n?"
    read verify
    done
    echo ""
    if [ "$AN1" == "no" ]
    then
    echo "Install mbr now. Then run this script agin"
    exit
    else
    echo "contunuing script"
    fi
    To this much shorter code:
    MBR='/usr/bin/install-mbr' # Or where ever you expect it to be
    if [ ! -x $MBR ] ; then
    echo "mbr doesn't appear to be installed."
    echo "If it is installed, check it's location, make sure it's executable and then make sure the MBR variable in this script is correct"
    exit 1
    fi
    I wouldn't have used the checkXX variables for each stage:
    mkdir ~/usbbiosfiles
    if [ $? != 0 ] ; then
    #failed
    echo "Could not \make directory usbbiosfiles"
    echo "look above \for \info"
    echo "Fix the problem and run this scrip agin"
    exit 1
    else
    echo "Made directory usbbiosfiles... OK"
    fi
    There is an issue with the way you do your verifications - the user can never get out unless they answer 'y' or hit CTRL+C. Something like this gives them options:
    verify="n"
    while [ "$verify" != "y" && "$verify" != "n" ]; do
    echo "You need to answer 'y'es or 'n'o"
    read verify
    echo $verify | tr "[:upper:]" "[:lower:]" # This converts the answer to lowercase so replies entered in upper case will still work
    done
    if [ $verify != 'y' ] ; then
    exit 1
    fi
    One last thing I try to do in scripts... Declare all your binaries as variables at the start of the program, then execute the binary program by using the variable. For example:
    # Binaries
    TAR='/bin/tar'
    CP='/bin/cp'
    CHMOD='/bin/chmod'
    # Execute tar and chmod the created file
    $TAR cvzf /tmp/tarfile.tar.gz /etc/*.conf
    $CHMOD 400 /etc/*.conf
    This way, it's easy to change the path in future without having to hunt through the script if the paths change, and it also ensures you're calling the programs using the full paths to make sure you're not executing some strange variant or alias that someone has setup. If I use `chmod` 30 times in a script, and the path changes in the future or on a different system (`chmod` is a bad example cause it's highly unlikely to change, but you know what I mean), then all you need to do is update the variable at the start of the script, and it all works again without having to script-hunt and change it 30 times.

  • What might you want to put in an InterruptedException catch?

    The purpose of this post is to clarify
    A) the operation of InterruptedExceptions, and
    B) the purpose of InterruptedExceptions
    So, tell me if I'm off on this:
    Suppose you have this thread that goes to sleep. It's interrupted. When it comes to (i.e. no longer interrupted and gets thread priority), the code in the catch for the InterruptedException is run.
    SO, my question is, what would you put in the catch? Would you use it to reestablish lost connections or find things that might have moved, or, knowing the source of the interruption, take it as some kind of crude kludgy communication ...???
    What is supposed to go in there? I've been blithely putting blank catches in like so -
    try {
      Thread.currentThread.sleep(4000);
    } catch (InterruptedException ie) {;}and I just want to make sure that this is not skipping out on something important.

    and I just want to make sure that this is not skipping
    out on something important.The only thing I can think that should go in there is a comment that explicitly says you are ignoring the exception. It might also help to say why you are ignoring it. That way if someone needs to fix your code in the future they will realize that you actually knew how to code defensively and you knew the conditions for that exception could be safely ignored.

  • Random kernel panics on iPhone 4 GSM: what would you do?

    Hello all,
    I'm posting here in hopes that someone could help shed some light on the matter before I give up and send my phone in for repair, provided it will be repaired/replaced given how random this issue is.
    I've had an iPhone 4 since November 2010, a GSM unit as I'm in Europe. Jailbroke it on a dull day just to see if I'd have any use for that, restored it to stock firmware (using the backup I had created before applying the jb) about 24 hours later. No trace of jb on it at all nowadays, basically. The phone and the system are as vanilla as they can be. The only customization, so to speak, is the provisioning profiles in my name as I'm an iOS developer.
    Ever since March, the phone will sometimes randomly reboot. There is no pattern whatsoever: I may be fiddling with it, I may be keeping it in my pocket, it may be charging, it may be placidly sitting on a table undisturbed. Out of the blue, the Apple logo will show up and the thing will reboot, and won't ask for the PIN either. I hadn't thought much of it as it was very rare, but lately it's become more apparent and I decided to look for some logs.
    To my horror, I found that ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/Jolliphone/Panics on my Mac was way overpopulated. The weirdest thing is that all the logs look virtually the same, although they all end abruptly in different points (which suggests that they were so brutal that there was no "time" to write the whole thing down.)
    Here is an example:
    Incident Identifier: [...]
    CrashReporter Key:   [...]
    Hardware Model:      iPhone3,1

    They are all like that. The only thing that's different is the OS system, which ranges from 4.3 to 4.3.3, and the location that generated the panic:
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x8007f3e5): "buf_brelse: bad buffer = 0xd0704640\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1735.46/bsd/vfs/vfs_bio.c:2348
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x8007f3e5): "buf_brelse: bad buffer = 0xd070aa98\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1735.46/bsd/vfs/vfs_bio.c:2348
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x8007f3e5): "buf_brelse: bad buffer = 0xd06fdf88\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1735.46/bsd/vfs/vfs_bio.c:2348
    …and so on. The caller is always 0x8007f3e5, and the buffer location is always in 0x0d6…–0x0d7… range. This is what leads me to think that it may be some memory problem.
    As I said there is absolutely no pattern in this. Sometimes it will stay a month without panicking – after a few panics on April 1st, it happened again on May 2nd – yet in other occasions it will panic 4 times within 8 minutes as it happened yesterday morning.
    Lately it's been happening more often when I charge it using the wall adapter, but then again it's fairly inconsistent: I have kept it connected since last evening on purpose, and it hasn't panicked once.
    I have tried restoring it as a new phone, just to make sure that it wasn't a software problem, and the very same thing happened as soon as I connected to my father's iPad 2 adapter.
    If you have read so far, I want to thank you very much for your patience. I'll get to the point: what should I do?
    I spent 35 minutes on the phone with AppleCare this morning and was about to give the green light to have it picked up, but the woman told me that I couldn't provide the logs to tech support, and that they'd run some tests on their own and, if they could reproduce the problem, I would get a refurbished phone in place of this one, otherwise they'd send the same unit back. Considering that it's impossible to reproduce it on purpose, I'm afraid that I will just end up being phoneless for two weeks (with the added issue of finding a way to stick this micro-sim into a phone that takes regular-sized sims), and ultimately be sent back the faulty phone.
    I told the woman I'd consider going to the Apple Store in Rome, so I could at least speak with a human person and expose the problem in more detail. I do have a repair ID and apparently I can just book a slot at the genius bar and have them access the repair ID data.
    The problem is that I live 200 km from Rome, and it would take the better part of a day and it would be more money spent on this issue to get there and back. And I wouldn't even be certain that they'd replace it: even if they agree to replace it, what if they're out of stock on 32 GB units, for instance?
    So here is the dilemma: I have a phone that feels very unstable given the 18 (eighteen) panics I've had in the last three days, and I'm facing either wasting time and money to go to an Apple Store, or being without the phone for the better part of two weeks, again without any certainty.
    Going to my carrier (Vodafone) is pointless: they referred me to Apple; at most they will ship it for me, but at that point I'd rather do it myself.
    As for the local Apple Premium Reseller, they are an authorized support center for Macs, but they don't offer any support for iPhones at all.
    What would you do?
    Thanks.

    Not saying you are complaining, I know it isn't what one likes, but just the way it is and quite normal.
    You can buy a used one from somewhere and just continue on your same contract (if same type of phone, eg: You didn't have original one before and go buy a used 3G now..then you need to change plans). But if you had 3G before and buy a used 3G now, you can activate it and your contract shouldn't restart.
    A used one you buy shouldn't have a SIM card in it but even if it does, you don't want to use it. You need to go to AT&T store and request a new SIM. They will give you one set for your account and you just go home and activate using same account (thus no contract changing). If you try to use another SIM without getting one from AT&T it could mess with your contract so best to deal with them first to get one coded for you. There is nothing wrong with buying a used iPhone and saying you want to put it on your existing account. You can do that with any phone. You already have the data plan etc required so they don't care.
    That was useful info, and I'm not complaining (well, I am, but it does no good, so it's a rhetorical complaint)...
    What I'm really looking for is opinions about what would be the most sensible/cost effective way to go right now, given the available options.
    Thanks,
    Lorraine

    You are talking to fellow users on these forums, not iTunes Support or Apple - I've asked the hosts to remove your phone number from your post.
    For the Camera app, try closing it via the taskbar and see if it works when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Camera app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar at the bottom of the iPad's screen, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Camera app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
    If that doesn't fix it then try a soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
    In terms of syncing, you will need iTunes on your computer - if you haven't already downloaded it then you can do so from here : http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    You can conncet the iPad to your computer and select it on the left-hand sidebar of your computer's iTunes (you can enable the sidebar on iTunes 11 on a PC via control-S), and use the tabs on the right-hand side of the iTunes screen to sycn your content to the iPad.

    For the excel file, what app are you viewing/editing it in ? If the values are different then it may be that the app that you are using doesn't support all the formulas that are being used in the spreadsheet. Apps that 'support' excel documents include Apple's Numbers app, and from third-parties apps such as Documents To Go ('premium' version) and QuickOffice Pro HD.

  • What do you think of this Design for Multiple Threads

    Hi Java Experts ;
    I'm curious to know what you think about this design for a multhreaded app i'm working on.
    I have a controller thread that (a.) creates threads and (b.) keeps a reference to threads that it creates (by sticking them in a hashtable along with the generated Id for that thread).
    When a created thread completes its job, it decrements the thread counter and removes its reference from the hashtable before it finishes its run method.
    Now here's the interesting part in my controller thread i'm creating new threads on the fly with this infinite loop
         public void run(){
              while(true){
                   try{
                        Thread.sleep(500);
                   }catch(InterruptedException e){
                   if(threadCounter<maxThreadCount && moreJobsToDo.size()>0){
                        createDomainThread();
              }//end while
    what do you think about this pattern ? My goal is to maintain about 200+ created threads running at all times with this pattern.

    jeff kesslerman's book says about threads
    "5.2.3 Threads
    The impact that threads have on RAM footprint isn't a problem for most programs, but running threads do need space to store their stack state, and the system- specific data structures do consume memory.
    Because runtime implementations vary widely in how threads are handled, you might encounter situations where the impact threads have on footprint is significant. For example, some ports of the JRE create a heavyweight OS process for each running thread. In an application that uses many threads, this means that thread costs, rather than class or object costs, can become the dominant factor in the program's memory consumption.
    You shouldn't avoid using threads-they're necessary in many cases, and generally don't have a large impact on footprint. However, you should be aware that the impact can be very different across runtimes. This is one of the reasons it's a good idea to measure performance characteristics under your program's different target environments. "
    Question #1: how does garbage collection go about clearing the stack state, and the system- specific data structures that consume memory.
    Question #2: in my situation, each worker thread's activity is not as brief as a simple server request. Each thread does a lot work and does a lot of network connections. on average I would say 100 http request - each of which can be easily blocked or delayed significantly. Therefore each worker thread may operate for between 2 - 10 minutes.
    Do you think thread pooling is useful in this situation ?

  • What Firefox version choices do I have for using Firefox on new laptop running Win 7 64-bit, and how do I move bookmarks from current laptop running Firefox 3.5.13 to new laptop?

    Currently running Firefox 3.5.13 on laptop using Windows XP pro sp3 and will want to move my bookmarks to a new laptop. New laptop uses Win 7 pro 64-bit OS. I have read too many conflicting reports about Firefox and Win 7 and understand that Firefox is working on a true 64-bit version. What are my choices for a stable web browser for new laptop and which particular version of Firefox is recommended and the pros and cons of that suggestion? (I believe one can run Firefox 32 bit version in the 64 bit environment, but is that the best choice?) I have not installed Firefox on new laptop yet and am eager to dump IE. This is being posted from my old laptop. Thanks ...

    If you go to this link you will be assured by Microsoft and Win7 "new" app checking and making sure that all drivers and software you have is compatible with Win7 64 bit. And in this article it states that Firefox version 3 IS compatible and designed for 64 bit OS, hm mm well as you know that is incorrect!! As of today Mozilla Firefox is not designed for a 64 bit computer. Thank you for your honesty and it saved me a big headache By being upnt and honest. my books!! Great job!!

  • Goals of current systemd development, what do you think?

    "System Vendors:
    The toolbox approach of classic Linux distributions is fantastic for people who want to put together their individual system,
    nicely adjusted to exactly what they need.
    However, this is not really how many of today's Linux systems are built, installed or updated.
    If you build any kind of embedded device, a server system, or even user systems, you frequently do your work based on complete system images, that are linearly versioned.
    You build these images somewhere, and then you replicate them atomically to a larger number of systems.
    On these systems, you don't install or remove packages, you get a defined set of files,
    and besides installing or updating the system there are no ways how to change the set of tools you get.
    The current Linux distributions are not particularly good at providing for this major use-case of Linux.
    Their strict focus on individual packages as well as package managers as end-user install and update tool is incompatible with what many system vendors want."
    - Source: http://0pointer.net/blog/revisiting-how … stems.html
    What i wonder is if this something we really want? (and i do not mean that i see this as being our, or my call to make, but as a topic of gnu/linux discussion in general)
    For my own part, Choosing Arch as my distro of choice, was largely just because of the "use-case" of being able to make my personal choice of use-case;
    I.e to get some part of control over what packages i need, and how my workflow be it on my desktop machine, or on my server.
    Pacman has largely been a great time-saving enabler for that, and of course the great work of the packagers on here.
    Never has it felt easier to cherry-pick applications, and to have sane non-defaults (vanilla/upstream) configurations enabling me to take a self-educated guess
    at how i want to set up my personal computing space (my system, my desktop (if any))
    My view on the matter, however educated or not, is that choice and burden of control was the main thing that drew people towards linux as opposed to
    other OS's (Win, MacOSX?) with a more, one-use-case-should-fit-all attitude.
    It is also my personal experience that the more automatic assumptions that we allow the system to make,
    the more trouble we will have when those assumptions prove wrong or collide with what we actually wanted.
    Furthermore i have always felt that I save time by using more time to set something up, getting a slight know-how of how it works, and fine-tuning it,
    to have it work the way i expect, and also to have a better understanding when it breaks
    - Then when something is automatically set, configured, and tailored to some theoretic use-case, and not meant to be tinkered with when it breaks.
    I Feel it takes more time fixing automatic stuff working against me, then setting it up the way i want in the first place.
    I do not wish to make this an inflammatory thread with the usual back and forths of us against and for systemd as change in how we approach our linux systems,
    But more like sitting down with a cup of tea (or any other neat beverage of choice) and discuss how we see our own situation in daily linux-usage,
    and how we think our beloved distribution, or linux at large, might change in the future.
    How do you all feel?

    blackout23 wrote:Who's going to oversee the app store? The people who develop software are responsible for their own software. I know that sounds pretty preposterous, because software is better when someone else compiles it (aka a package maintainer)... Ohh wait it isn't. In the end you have to trust the upstream developer anyway, since even now Arch devs don't do a full code audit when the package something up. So introducing unnecessary middle man is completely pointless.
    There needs to be some medium between a collection of source files and the final installation. Someone needs to oversee that. It's unavoidable. Linux distributions are just that: Packaged distributions of *nix software, overseen by teams of people and deployed using a distribution platform. Without a distribution platform, and someone to operate it, none of the rest makes any sense.
    Relationship between developers and users is going to be 1000x better. You know why? No unnecessary middle man. Devs can roll out new version to their users when THEY want it not when some package mainter feels like packaging up a new release and then wait for the new release cycle of the distro to include it. This is immensly better especially for the small FOSS app developer.
    The myriad choices that go into developing a single application complicate things. Which versions of various librarires are being used in development? Which tools? What dependencies would the final product require? How are those dependencies handled----are they packaged along with the final package itself, with each application containing copies of its own dependencies? Am I gonna end up with a *nix system that mirrors my Windows installation, where every time I install some new game I have to install yet more identical copies of Visual C++ and DirectX, until my drive clogs up?
    Here's another question to ponder: Where do developers get the tools they need to develop? As it is, they're available in packakge repositories, and can be installed on a whim. The proposed "App Store" model would require them to be obtained through the centralized distribution platform. But then how do they get to the platform? Someone packages them and puts them there. But then how do they get packaged and put there? Utilities are used to package them and put them in the distribution platform. But then where do those tools come from? And so on. IN the end, developers still need to jump through the same hoops that we have now. However, the gulf between the developer experience and user experience would be broadened, as users and developers rely on different means of obtaining the same things, and the expectations and persepctives of each are shaped by those different experiences. To quote the article in quesiton:
    Many users are used to app markets like Android, Windows or iOS/Mac have. Markets are a platform that doesn't package, build or maintain software like distributions do, but simply allows users to quickly find and download the software they need, with the app vendor responsible for keeping the app updated, secured, and all that on the vendor's release cycle. Users tend to be impatient. They want their software quickly, and the fine distinction between trusting a single distribution or a myriad of app developers individually is usually not important for them.
    In other words, it turns users into assholes that individual developers need to deal with on an individual basis---something many folks just aren't prepared to deal with (how many of us have seen a "I'll give you a five-star rating if you add feature x or fix bug y" review?).
    Now, on distibutions such as Arch or Gentoo or Sorcerer or CRUX, which are used by many hobbyist and professional developers, the things necesary for development are in the package repositories, and the tools used by developers to build those things and distribute them, and by users to retrieve and install them, are one and the same. So the difference in expectations between end-users and developers is relatively small. Still, the impudence and entitlement of some users surfaces from time to time, and they need to be reminded that [insert distribution here] is developed and maintained by volunteers in their spare time, etc. But imagine that sense of entitlement, multiplied by the number of packages from individual developers in the central distribution platform.
    You are aware two of the guys who worked this out use Arch and one of them (Tom Gundersen) is even an Arch Linux developer?
    Yes. I read the article. Maybe there's something getting lost in translation here: What's essentially being talked about, near as I can tell, is a universal Linux distribution platform. It's been tried. It didn't work. Like I said, I won't argue over the technical aspects. I can't claim a deep understanding of them, and I'm sure the folks behind this proposal know the technical side of it very well. But the human element makes this all extremely dubious in my eyes.

  • Lack of SD card slots what do you think

    I don't know about the rest of you, but I like my stuff on an SD card. Not in a cloud. It seems Motorola, Verizon, and android all want you to put your stuff in the cloud. I'm sorry but I like my privacy and I like to access my content even when I have no signal. The cloud is for morons who don't realize their stuff can be hacked. If the Pentagon can be hacked, so can the cloud. Verizon, give us the option. Quit force feeding us stuff that a bunch of techno geeks sitting around and dream up. I have been a loyal customer for years and your trying my patience. I like my Droid Razr MAXX HD. It has served me well for 2 years in some of the worst environments. It has never failed me and I think you hit the nail on the head when you introduced it. But you took a moronic stance and quit offering it. You got it right and then screwed it up. The only complaint I had was all the bloat ware. Give us the choice. We buy the phone, it is ours, we should be the ones to decide what stays and what goes. Not some ***** sitting in marketing. If you want to introduce it, then do so but allow the people the choice of what stays and what goes. It will cost you customers in the future if you don't, including me. Have a nice day!!!!

    You ask "what do you think".
    I think that your message would/will be better received if you didn't resort to name calling and "colorful" language.
    You/we will never win the "argument" over what you term "bloatware".  Verizon enters into financial agreements with the providers of that software to be able to install it on the devices.  They make a lot of money (presumably) on this, so it is not likely to end.
