Sleep/wakeup problem - get colored wheel - must hard shutdown

If I put my iMac to sleep (Apple -> Sleep), or just let it go to sleep, I can't seem to get back without having to hard-shutdown and restart. When the computer comes out of sleep, it looks fine until I try to do something, anything. If I click on FireFox to do something, (or any application it seems) I get the colored wheel that just spins and never stops. It seems like I have cursor control in that I can move the cursor, and sometimes the colored wheel changes to the regular cursor when I'm over the background image on the desktop, but if I try to access any menu items the cursor changes back to the colored wheel. I also cannot open any new application from the dock. I'm pretty well stuck and am forced to hard-shutdown by pressing the power button for a few seconds.
This problem seems to have started about a week ago. I have tried to read about it in the forums and seem to find other with similar problems but they state the problem occurred after upgrading to 10.5.5. I am running 10.5.6 but can't remember exactly the date I upgraded, but am wondering if this could be the problem.
Also, I have tried resetting the SMC as described in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543 but there is no change.

Ian,
I appreciate the information. I have, in the meantime, shutdown my iMac. Not just restarted, but completely shut down. So far, I have not experienced the problem again. Prior to shutting down, I keep my Mac going 24 hours, but I do put it in sleep, or let it go to sleep (they do seem different since when it goes to sleep I can still hear things running as opposed to when I put it to sleep it's completely quite). I'm beginning to wonder if somehow that caused the problem. In any case, I'll watch it and see if anything else happens. I forgot to mention but I did run the extended hardware test by starting my Mac while holding down the "d" key. It found no errors but I wanted to mention that I did run the test. And not to be sarcastic, but I've owned PCs until this Mac. I know shutting down a PC every now and then is a good idea, but I didn't think I'd need to do that with the Mac.
I'll keep you posted.
Thanks, again.

Trouble with slow Macbook Air. I have first generation MacBook Air and have a hard time keeping hard drive from being full. After trashing many docs, I have almost 5 gigs available, but mac is slow and I keep getting color wheel when I use Mail. I'd like to install Lion, but now I'm afraid it will slow down my machine even further. Do I have enough free hard disc space? Is Mail problem related to free hard disc space? Thanks for your help!

7gb of free disc space is required to install Lion.  Read this about how to free up disc space: http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html.  Also, advice on how to speed up your mac: http://www.maclife.com/article/feature/25_ways_speed_your_mac

Originally it was 2GB RAM. I have upgrade to 4GB and upgraded disk to 500GB. No matter what she does, even as simple as opening a small file on the desktop seems to create a color wheel event. Often it locks everything. Very frustrating. I have considered a clean install to see if that will help. Any ideas? I was trying to check swal usage, but there is apparently no "swap" command. According to the Activity monitor, there is no CPU hog, there is always at least 1GB of free RAM. Disk activity is not high. I have about 30 years experience with various XENIX/UNIX OSes and cannot figure this out.

Often a primary suspect is a bad hard drive. Can you check the SMART status of the drive with Disk Utility? Otherwise, I'd try running the computer from an external boot drive.

  • Sleep (wakeup) problems with 2x 2 GB RAM

    Hi,
my old problem still persists, but the thread is archived. Please have a look at
Topic : Does not wake up from sleep after some time
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1451042&tstart=0
    and answer here.
PS: Is there some official way to contact Apple with this problem? I have the strong feeling this is not the right place to get solutions.
    Thanks,
    Carsten

    Hallo Carsten,
    1. You can try calling AppleCare by telephone. Even if you don't have AppleCare, you may at least be able to talk with a human representative from Apple
If they refuse to help you, they may at least have a suggestion about what to do or who to contact with your problem.
    AppleCare in Deutschland: (49) 01805 009 433
    Montag bis Freitag - 8:00 bis 19:45
    Samstag- 10:00 bis 17:45 Uhr
    2. You could visit the Apple retail store in München, although it is not likely practical if you live in Aachen
    3. Apple Autorisierter Service Providers (AASPs) within or near Aachen should be able to talk directly with Apple, on your behalf. Search for Deutsch AASPs here: <http://www.apple.com/de/buy/locator>.
For example, I found a store in Köln called Simply Mac <http://www.simplymac.de>.
Of course you should call in advance to see if the AASP can address your problem.
I hope you have success finding someone to speak with.

  • Sleep/wakeup problem discovered - Apple USB modem is the problem.

Ever since Leopard (every release), I've been having frequent problems with my iMac not being able to wake up from sleep mode. Would not respond to mouse or keyboard. I tracked this down to a problem going to sleep. The machine would appear to go to sleep, but something was still running inside the iMac. A fan?? Disconnecting the Apple USB Modem from the iMac USB port fixed the problem!!! This is an all Apple problem. Apple needs to address compatibility with their modem, which they still sell.

I would call AppleCare and let them know you are having this problem. It is possible that it simply will be fixed by replacing the modem. If replacing the modem does not solve the problem, then call AppleCare again, and ask them to file a bug report on your behalf and find out why Energy Saver doesn't work with the modem. Many third party USB devices create problems for all USB peripherals if Energy Saver is enabled. Make sure you have you have none connected. If you don't have any connected that strengthens your case with AppleCare. You can always use Screen Saver instead of Energy Saver until the issue is fixed.

  • Trouble with spinning color wheel

Still having the same issues with the spinning color wheel. Took my computer into Apple; seemed to "fix" it but as soon as I brought it back home and started using it again the same issue with the color wheel constantly spinning.  Has ANYONE had success with fixing this problem?!!! I've tried everything suggested and like I said, took it into Apple and that hasn't helped.

OK ... so I just restarted and opened Safari first ... no spinning ball. And I opened mail after hitting the rebuild, well, I'm missing messages from Dec. 24 - now, but it opened right away. Most messages are FB feeds, so it's not like I've lost anything important. So, initial thoughts ... John was a tremendous help, BUT, we shall see what happens when I try to open mail again ... and I'll try it first with the next restart or wake up ... so appreiciate the walk-thru on all of this!

Ever since installing iCloud and Lion my computer is slow or freezes.  The color wheel comes on and My work stops.  I have only a small window of time where my computers will function normally during the day. I know many others that have the same problem. I'll get 20-30 minutes of work done and then a sync or something comes on, the color wheel of death shows up, and my productivity is shot.  I have to shut the computer down the hard way!  when it comes back up, it is still either frozen or slow.  I've checked in at the genius bar and all they say is that there have been some problems that Apple is trying to fix.  It effects Mail, Contacts, Safari, Calendar....yeah, pretty much everything.  My iPhone and iPad are not effected as much so I end up doing what I can with them.  I've seen the blogs out there and understand that many have the same problem.  I have been waiting to read about a fix but I have found nothing!  Any ideas?

Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
For startup issues...  open System Preferences > Users & Groups - Login Items. Delete any apps listed there then restart your mac.
And disable the Lion "resume" feature.
    Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:   Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
And Spotlight may be indexing... you can turn that off > Turning Off Spotlight | Mac Tricks And Tips

  • Problem getting hard drives to mount on desktop and also open when they do

I have a problem getting the iMac to recognise external hard drives - it won't show them on either firewire 400 or 800. I can see my 1TB drive using usb ( it shows up on the desktop, whereas on firewire it doesn't do this) but if I try to open it and see the contents in finder, it opens, but doesn't display the contents of the drive. I can see the disk size but just get a grey spinning wheel in the bottom right hand of the finder window. Timemachine does not work with this drive. it used to but then stopped. It sees the drive but cannot back up to it.

What brand drive is it? Check to see how the drive has been formatted. From the desktop right click/Get Info.
If your iMac is having Firewire issues try resetting the SMC: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543?viewlocale=en_US
Open up Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility select the external drive on the left hand side and under the First Aid tab click Repair Disk.
If the drive is formatted for Windows NTFS+ or FAT32 then you will need to erase the drive and reformat it for Mac OS Extended. Make sure to backup any data before reformatting.

  • My Iphoto version 8.1.2 stopped working today. Opens to a blank white screen with the little color wheel spinning indicating something running. I also cannot shut this window once opened without doing a hard shut down of my Mac Book Pro. What is wrong?

Opens to a blank screen with the little color wheel running indicating that something is running everytime I put my mouse on page. I also cannot close the page or do anything concerning this page when the little wheel is running. This has gone on for hours. I can only close the page by doing a hard shutdown of by Mac Book Pro. Never had this happen before.

    Your main library is damaged.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|Previous Sh' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • When I am in e-mail. I get the spinning color wheel. Then, when I check the activity montior, it notes high cpu usage (99%) for "Safari web content.". then I quit this process and cpu usage drops way done. but I have to log in again to my e-mail. what can

When I am in e-mail, I sometimes get the spinning color wheel, which lock up everything. when it doesn't go away, I see on the activity monitor, that CPU usage is very high (99%), for a process calles " Safari web content'. When I click on the proccess and quite, the CPUusage goes way down. Problem is that I have to then log back in to e-mail. What can I do to eliminate this proble.  thanks

How much FREE RAM do you have when this occurs. It's easy to tell, when it beach balls open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) click the System Memory tab and note how much FREE RAM is listed. If it's 500MB or less it's time for a RAM upgrade.

  • If I try to rotate a photo in the Finder menu I get the never ending spinning color wheel?

If I try to rotate a photo in the Finder menu I get the never ending spinning color wheel?

The problem with write permissions for the OneDrive folder only shows up in Lightroom 6's export dialogue, that's why it's to irritating. Lightroom 5.7.1 is not having that problem nor does the file explorer. The problem also exists on both of my machines. I will try to check for other problems with the OneDrive troubleshooter though: Running the OneDrive troubleshooter - Windows Help

  • When I open iphoto, I only get the spinning color wheel

When I open iphoto, the window is blank and I just get the spinning color wheel.  I have OSX 10.6.8.  The last time I used iphoto I had deleted over 100GB of photos (they were backed up to an external hard drive). Now I just get the spinning wheel.  I have to force quit to shut it down.
