Sleeping Dogs

Finally but in sleeping dogs. I rented it and liked it, but I have a large enough backlog.
Well this weeks XBLA sale was sleeping dogs for $20. CAG put up that Hungary marketplace had it for 400MSP.
Couldn't pass up Sleeping Dogs for $5. And yes it is in English.

The DLCs are just extra missions that doesn't expand on the main story line. Sleeping Dogs was my favorite game last year, I'm waiting for a Game of the Year edition so I can re-buy it and do a 100% completion.

  • GT70 2PC: 870M does not activate, benchmarks and performance ingame confirm this

I bought myself a GT70 2PC Dominator (the SSD version) with an 870M inside, and after starting several games, checking benchmarks and comparing framerates to my current desktop machine (which has an i5 2500K and a GTX 770), I find that, even after configuring the machine to prefer the "powerful Nvidia processor", and setting all games to use the Nvidia processor, it still uses the 4600 processor. I'm getting rather low framerates, I'm not hearing any fan speed increase, Benchmarks ingame like the one from Sleeping Dogs still report the 4600 GPU and some games won't even boot up properly (like Just Cause 2). I did configure all the games to use the Nvidia GPU in my Nvidia Control panel, I updated my drivers, Device manager is finding both cards.
Is there a way to tell my laptop "Look, I don't care about saving my battery, I don't care about noise, I don't care about heat (as long as it does not damage anything), just ALWAYS use the Nvidia GPU, even when it's not needed, so I can actually have some enjoyment out of the 1600 EUR I spent on this machine"?

Check your power button light and see if it lights red(red=dgpu, white=igpu) and make sure you've attached battery with AC plugged while playing games.
Fan speed is changing by different cpu/gpu temperature, so check the temperature and the fan speed in Dragon Gaming Center and compare the temperature and the fan speed under different situation.
Can you tell the graphics driver version you're using? (both Intel and NVIDIA one)
Sadly for the Optimus structure, you can't disable the single graphics but you should be able to use the dGPU to run the game. Except the settings in NVIDIA Control Panel, you can also try to right click on the shortcut of the game and choose "run with graphics processor"> "High-performance NVIDIA processor"

  • Buying a PS4 - Game Recommendation list

I'm buying a PS4 in a few days. I'm looking for help in selecting games as I haven't really followed PS Titles over the past few years. I do own a few PS3 Titles, but it is quite limited. I've mostly been gaming on PC. However, I really *do* want to get back into console gaming again just a little bit puzzled as to what to get So here's hoping people can help me conjure a list of titles to start getting for PS4. I'll give you a little bit of a background information on games I have played, both on and off of PC/PS, or what sort of genres I like. [MMO Genre:WoW (Retired)Tera OnlineGW2]Hearthstone Soul Calibur (Most played PS3 Game on SC5)Devil May CryDante's InfernoThe Last of UsCatherineShadow of Memories (PS2)Zone of the Enders (PS2)Final FantasySilent HillAmnesiaBioshockDead SpacePortalThe Evil Within (Hoping for a PS4 vs PC Comparison here. Not fully played through PC as it kept crashing and it put me off playing) This is just a guide. Generally I'm a fan of linear storyline games with good combat if there's combat in it (Aside from stuff like GTA/Sleeping Dogs). puzzle solving/quirky like Catherine/Shadow of Memories. RPG games. Fighting games. Horror games. Well you see the list above. Any and all suggestions are welcome. I don't want it to sit there like my PS3 because I'm never quite sure of the title. Online isn't a big thing to me unless it's online like RPG based.  Sorry for the post being so long.

If you want to try some titles that offer a rewarding experience, yet are sometimes hidden in the shadows of the AAA 'big hitters', my suggestions would be the following:  CounterSpyChild Of LightValiant Hearts: The Great WarTrine 2: Complete StoryTransistorDust: An Elysian TaleNever AloneThe Unfinished SwanResident Evil Revelations 2 *You may have played some of these on PC already.

  • Do I need to install flash player using Win 7 Pro and IE11?

    Hi,
    Could I have a definitive yes/no answer to, "Do I need a flash player plug-in when I am using 64 bit Windows 7 Professional SP1 and IE11?"
    I am using IE11 v.11.0.9600.16476
    Flash v.12.0.0.38
I am not, as far as I can see, have any problems viewing anything. But Adobe insist I should be using Flash v.12.0.0.43 and they identify my browser as Gecko.
I understand that Gecko is usually identified as Firefox but is it correctly identified as IE?
Windows 8.1 with IE11 states that it is a plug-in less browser; but is Windows 7 with IE11 plug-in less or not...???
    Very confusing!
    Regards.

Flash Player for IE is integrated by Microsoft with Windows 8 and 8.1 only... IE11 is a "rolling train wreck", though. Almost NOTHING on the web can properly identify it if it can be identified at all.  As long as your current Flash Player is working, I'd "let a sleeping dog lie". Until you NEED to update it, don't with IE11.
With WIn 8.1 it's the worst combination in all computing history. Be glad you still have 7.

  • Trouble: HD "Data Lost," DiskWarrior stumped, then a "Clean Install"

    Hello Classic Fans,
Since installing OS 9.1 on my 1998 WallStreet PowerBook on 25 April 2005, I enjoyed a PERFECT computer until 3 days ago (16 Feb. 2006) when my Mac started badly acting up.
I'll chart what happened and what I did to correct the problem in the hope it may help others. I would also appreciate feedback telling me if what I did was correct and if there's anything else I should do. Since I'm just now back up and running I'm not sure the problem is gone.
    Sequence of Events:
16 Feb: While surfing in InternetExplorer 5.1.7 the program quit then the display froze. Ran DiskWarrior (5% out) and installed fresh copy of I.E. I had not had a freeze for many moons!
17 Feb: Got "Data Lost" on HD error message twice. Ran DiskWarrior again (5% out).
Backed up recent important "Documents" stuff to CD.
(Note: From past experience I knew that the HD "Data Lost" error means certain trouble).
18 Feb: It's back! Got HD "Data Lost" right away. This time the error box kept flashing and dinging like nuts and wouldn't stop.
    Forced restart.
Flashing "Question Mark" appeared (HD can't recognize its own "System" software!)
Booted to Zip Rescue Disk with DiskWarrior on it.
DiskWarrior can't see HardDrive -- none of my normal desktop icons appear either.
    Shut down with Power Button.
Tried to start/boot to HD ("System" folder) using Power Button.
This time HD recognized its "System" folder and started normally! (How come it could normally boot this time but not last time?)
Restarted to the Boot Rescue Zip. This time DiskWarrior COULD see HD, so I ran DiskWarrior (1% out) on the HD and successfully rebuild Directory.
Almost certain now that something was wrong more than DiskWarrior could fix (I had run DiskWarrior twice in 2 days and the problem was still there and getting worse), I consulted the Apple TroubleShooting guide and decided to do a "Clean Install" of OS 9.1 before I lost EVERYTHING on my HD (that dire event happened before!)
Did "Clean Install" of OS 9.1.
Moved the following folders from the "Previous System" suitcase to the new clean install "System" Suitcase: Control Panels, Extensions, Favorites, Apple Menu Items, Startup Items, and Preferences.
After doing that stuff and a restart, my desktop now looks the same as it did before the Clean Install and my applications, etc. are working like they did before too.
Is the problem fixed? I don't know yet. But from past experience I do know that once the HD "Data Lost" error starts appearing bad stuff starts happening really fast.
Als: Since installing OS 9.1 nearly a year ago, I have never rebuilt the desktop or reblessed anything. Was that a mistake? But this PowerBook just ran PERFECT better than when brand new!
    Until 3 days ago....then BANG!
Did I follow the correct procedure? Any other suggestions for this eight year old PowerBook to keep it alive?
Thanks and I hope this helps others....
Wallstreet G3 Powerbook Series (1998)   Mac OS 9.1.x   233 Hz; 20 GB HD (16 GB free); 288 RAM:

I have no expierence using a zip disk. I have always ran DW directly from the CD. Therefore, unknown if it would have made a difference.
The reason why IE froze could have been because it needed more preferred memory. The newer version needs approximately 300%.
If you were looking at a flash type site, those take up a lot of memory & can cause freezes if your browser does not have enough preferred memory.
Then again, you could have had directory damage. 5% is not much. You could have run Disk First Aid directly from your System Install CD that originally came w/your computer. Whatever, DFA can't repair, then that is when you pull out the heavy artillary (DiskWarrior, etc.).
I would just leave sleeping dogs lie for right now if your computer is running smoothly again.
I would also do a monthly maintenance by running DW & Plus Optimizor.
Rebuild your desktop after updating/upgrading an OS, running a 3rd party utility like DW, downloading & installations.
You really need a backup browser. The following is from Microsoft's website:
"Microsoft ended support for Internet Explorer for Mac on December 31st, 2005, and is not providing any further security or performance updates. As of January 31st, 2006, Internet Explorer for the Mac is no longer available for download from Microsoft."

  • IMac or Macbook Air?

Hello community I'm in the market to buy a new notebook/desktop soon and using a PC for homework, banking, surfing the web, little gaming(sleeping dogs, batman arkham city and deadspace), and music. It gets the job done kinda it is almost 5 years and debating do I go for the fully hooked up MBA or iMac 27' for more power? Many of you will ask MBA for student however the iMac is just a beast and would like opinions. I plan to use the Mac give or take 5-8 years hopefully I've had my iMac 21.5' for some time and its great but not for gaming :/

For best results, make a dual list, listing plus and minus on both sides.  Then at bottom list OBJECTIVE USE desires for same (portability over gaming,....mobile use vs. larger screen) etc etc.
Doing that for 10 mins will avert any regrets later since you made a well informed decision.
If youre in a college dorm and want to do homework sitting on the bed surrounded by books, or flip open the screen and check daily emails news etc etc, or watch a film or youtube in the chair or bed,....that might be a consideration too, obviously.

  • R7950-2PMD3GD5/OC bsod at stock settings.

My pc running a msi R7950-2PMD3GD5/OC  keeps getting bsods and crashes on programs/ games that are very graphically intensive, namely the ones i found that had the problem where Sleeping Dogs, Planetside 2, and Heaven Benchmark. Though I fear it will get worse over time.
Heaven Benchmark crashes the most and I can not always complete a single benchmark.
Temperatures are great, with my default fan speeds I don't go over 50c
I replaced the cooler with a Artic Acccelero Xtreme about half a year ago
I am running Windows 8 for about 4 months
I am having these issues for about 3 weeks
I have tried multiple driver versions and am now running the latest beta version (13.2), after I got issues on the latest stable one. (naturally combined with full uninstalls)
Overclocking does not worsen the problem providing I increase the voltage correctly.
I could never oc the gpu without increasing the voltage
I have never flashed the bios of the gpu.
Anything that could fix it short of an rma which of course has its drawbacks especially after I replaced a cooler.
Edit: improved readability of the post and included some new details.

Never mind, I wrongly assumed it was the gpu however in reality it was not, it was a undervolt on the cpu I was running for ages, which i deemed stable however once I changed the voltage to make the undervolt less it did fix the issue so I am closing it here.

  • Installing 7.0.2 (contents)

I have downloaded the 7.0.2 upgrade and I get 2 files: 1) Read before you instal..., and 2) iTunes.mpkg. Usually whe I download I get a "box" looking file that loads the program when I click on it, but I don't get it during this download. When I click on iTunes.mpkg it tries to open with Quicktime.
has anyone else had this problem? Fix? Thanks my daughters Christmas Shuffle only works with this update so I hope there is a fix.

Running 10.3.9 when I download itunes 7.0.2 there is no installer present although the entire file appears to have been downloaded. Judging from other posts here, I may be fortunate. But I would like to share libraries with others on my network who are using iT7. I'm not especially eager to upgrade to OS10.4., my hard drive is already maxed out. Should I let this sleeping dog lie? iT6 works for most of my needs?
Niel, I'm tempted to follow your workaround, but I'm concerned why such a fix should be necessary. Is there a deeper problem for which I should allow Apple more time to straighten it out? I'm a bit risk averse in this regard, although my library is safely backed up externally.

  • Q: Restore Boot Drive from Backup?

I've used Retrospect for years with good results. On several occasions, I've needed to restore my boot drive from backup, and it worked flawlessly.
    Not this time.
After the restore I can boot okay from the restored volume.
What's weird is that many of my preferences are gone! My dock has reverted to default (all icons I'd added are missing). When I view my "Account" in the System Preferences, my "Picture" is still there, but my Login Items are gone!
It would be easy enough to manually reconfigure these things. BUT this makes me wonder what else isn't being properly restored, that I may not stumble across for weeks, only to find that I've recycled my backup and can't do anything about it?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

You're welcome. As to your questions, by the numbers:
    1. I don't know. I wasn't there to watch you perform either the Backup or the Restore. As I said earlier, and as confirmed by the responses received on the Retrospect forums, you went about the Restore by a convoluted method. I suggest you review the information concerning Restore in the Retrospect Users Guide.
    2. Again, beats me. How would I know? I've never seen this problem, nor had the other Retrospect experts who responded to your post on the Retrospect forums. Technically, if you used Restore to "Restore an entire disk" then everything should have been restored from the Backup Set so that the restored disk reflected its state as of the last Backup.
Don't take this the wrong way, but you've been a bit "light" on details both here and in the Retrospect forums. It's impossible to perform a forensic analysis based on the limited details provided. If you try to jog your memory this long after the event, your recall may be imperfect. In your Retrospect forums post, you noted the possibility of "Probably an operator headspace malfunction."which I found amusing, but is often the case in trying to recreate what one did. Next time, take step-by-step notes.
If I had to guess, it was something in the process you used, i.e. the first failed Restore attempt from using the incorrect option, followed by the second correct attempt using "Restore an entire disk." You may have done things between those two attempts that led to the issue. WIthout a record, it's impossible to reconstruct the events other than based on potentially imperfect recall.
I generally recommend checking backups after they're performed. This is easily done with bootable Duplicates, since you can start up from them, look around, try a few applications. Since Backup Sets are not bootable, one cannot check them in this way. I recommend using a Safe Boot from the backup since, if you have Mail as a Login Item and new mail was received since you initiated the backup, then the new mail would be downloaded to the backup, which you'd probably like to avoid.
Using Retrospect's Verification option is also helpful. It increases the time required to perform a backup, since afterwards the destination files are compared against the source files, but it can let you know about problems, if any. Verification does yield some false positives (Execution Errors) on cache and log files (generally date/time or size issues), but these can be ignored for such files if you're performing a "hot backup" — backing up your startup disk while booted from such — as cache and log files on your startup disk are constantly being updated. The differences in such files are irrelevant w.r.t. the integrity of the backup. One can avoid these false positives by performing a cold backup: running Retrospect from another bootable volume, e.g. booting from a Duplicate of your startup disk to then backup your normal startup disk to another volume. In a cold backup, your normal startup disk hasn't been used as the startup disk, hence cache and log files on such aren't updated. Any execution errors you see then are worth examining in the Retrospect Log.
What I suggest you do is the following:
    • Let sleeping dogs lie. Keep the Backup Set from which you restored the drive around for awhile in case something else turns up missing in the next couple of months, specifically personal data. Create a new Backup Set for future backups of the disk in question. Consider implementing bootable Duplicates in addition to Backup Sets.
    • If the OS becomes problematic, perform an Archive and Install. For important tips on this, see my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ.
    • If any third-party apps become problematic, uninstall them, then reinstall them.
    • If you're regularly having to restore your startup disk due to "corruption" there may be something amiss with the disk. Keep an eye on its SMART status by checking such in Disk Utility. For one approach to this with step-by-step instructions, see Steps 1 and 2 of the Procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ.
Finally, you wrote: "P.S. - Apologies if this bothers anyone, but I plan to cross-post this to the Retrospect forum, since it appears to get a somewhat different set of users."It doesn't necessarily bother me, but cross-posting to a variety of different forums or Discussions is generally considered "very bad form" as one risks wasting some subset of responders' time. It's a "newbie" mistake and one does not want to gain a reputation for using the "shotgun" method.
Cross-posting is very annoying when one spend one's time answering a question in one place, only to find the same question posted by the same person on another forum and also answered there: one of the responders who answered the question in that exchange had their time wasted. Think how you would feel in the same situation.
When I found your post on the Retrospect forums (which is where the question really belongs) I almost skipped answering your question here for that very reason.
    I think we're done here.
    Good luck!

  • I'm having kernal panics even in single user mode

My new Mac Pro has been having kernal panics left and right. I've done everything suggested here plus everything the Apple people have been telling me to do both on the phone and at the local Apple store. Nothing helps and the last call I made the Apple tech suggested I install a new hard drive which he is sending me. I also have his extension number so I can call him when the install is done. In the meantime while I'm waiting for the new hard drive I manage to reinstall the system after a couple of tries and just for grins boot into single user mode and let the computer sit for awhile. When I get back I find the computer has once again crashed and this one line stands out "simple lock deadlock detection". What this means I have no clue but I'm beginning to suspect what I have is a real lemon. If anyone has some insight they'ld like to share on this I'm open to suggestions.
P.S. And just to let you know I've done the following:
    1. I've booted into safe boot mode and it crashes
    2. I've booted off the install DVD and let it stand and it crashes
    3. I've disconected everything but the mouse and keyboard and it crashes
    4. I've reinstalled the system numerous times and it still crashes
    5. I've taken it to the local Apple store where they replaced the memory and it still crashes
    6. I've called the Apple help line and followed their suggestions which included unplugging the computer for 15 seconds to clear the SMU and it crashes even worse.
    7. I've zapped the pram and reset the nvram and it still crashes
    8. Even when I left it at the local Apple Store where they used their monitor, mouse, keyboard, and power cord it still crashes
    9. It crashes on startup from time to time
    10. And last but not least it crashes in single user mode even though I've done fsck -fy and then let it just sit
    11. Oh yes and one more thing, the crashes are completely random and unpredictable.
Mac Pro duel core intel xeon 2.66mhz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Well I finally resolved my issue, hopefully. Upon installing the new hard drive I had no problems for a week or so and decided to add a second drive and put my old system on it and see what would happen when I booted from the second drive. All went well for a week and then boom the crashes began again. I then switched back to the new drive with the fresh system and all went well for a little over a week when boom the panics returned. I called Apple and they made an appointment for me at the local Apple store. After looking at my files which included about 7 phone calls and several visits to the Apple store the best solution was a brand new Mac Pro. All this has been covered under warranty which is awesome. The only crashing I've had to date had to do with something called "mdimportserver" whatever that is. I also can only use one ethernet connector which is strange. I figured it might have to do with the new hard drive so I booted over to the old drive and everything is working fine except for the ethernet port which I haven't tried yet. I figure for now it's best to let that sleeping dog alone since everything else is working so good. When I'm sure this new Mac is working ok I'll wipe the new drive and use Super Duper to clone this system over rather than use Apple's migration assistant which evidently didn't do such a good job of migrating my system over. I'll let you all know how it goes several weeks from now hopefully.

  • Anybody use Word Perfect?  How does 'Pages' compare?

For anyone who wants to cut to the quick, just read the question....the last paragraph.
I need some comfort. It's probably normal to get frustrated with a new Word Processing program like 'Pages' after only 2 days of using it so I'm willing to be patient, but I have a general question, which actually appears in the Title of this post.
I've used Word Perfect on my non-Mac computers for 20 years and although the program is without equal in it's sophistication and ease of use (IMO), I do believe it caused some big problems for other programs on my computer (incompatibility problems with other software). I've wanted an iMac for a long time just to get rid of all the problem I had with those other computers, thinking I'd be rid of WordPerfect, which I blamed for many of the problems. I wanted a fresh, clean start, so I sure don't want to mess up my 2 day-old iMac by loading up a word-processor like WordPerfect again....that'll just mess everything up again.
But I have mixed emotions. After my past experience with Word Perfect, it's just hard for me to believe that the WP people actually got rid of all their bugs, and wouldn't inadvertently stick them all into an Apple product. I'm paranoid, I know. I'm asking this question because word-processing is the most important thing to me in using a computer and I found WordPerfect to be perfect, as a word-processor, that is.
I'm certainly willing to give 'Pages' a fair try, and hope it works out for me. But, is there anyone here who uses WordPerfect on their Mac (and with which OS) and does it cause you any problems? Also, in your opinion how does it compare with 'Pages'?

I was an avid WP user (DOS, AtariST, and Mac versions) for years and I was a beta tester for the Atari and Mac versions. I was never all that impressed with the Windows versions. When the program was sold to Novel support and quality became uneven and after Novel sold it to Corel, well, let's let sleeping dogs lie, eh?
Pages isn't WP - it is a consumer word processor and desktop publishing program. Still it is quite powerful and easy to use...once you accept its conventions. That is a sticking point for a lot of people. With OS X, Apple has taken the toolbar and adapted it to its own purpose. Unlike some programs that attempt to put every command in toolbars, Apple prefers to target a smaller number and allow the user some ability to custom it. Apple has also adopted the idea of palettes - one palette actually. The inspector. In OS X the inspector is used to take commands that might be buried in the menu hierarchy and puts them out front. With Pages, like many OS X programs, getting to know the Inspector is key to using Pages.
As I said, Pages isn't WP or MS Word. That's good and bad. The good is that the program is cleaner and easier to learn. It also means that lots of features you might consider important are missing. You should have a demo version of iWork on your new iMac and you have 30 days to use it before you have to decide to keep it or ditch it.

  • Installing 7.0.2

I tried to install 7.0.2 and I got the error message itunessetup.exe is not a valid win32 application. What do I do?

  • 10.8.4 upgrade unable to connect to wifi

After upgrading to 10.8.4, wireless card will not turn on and find the wireless services.
I cannot even turn it on through network preferences.

I had the identical issue after upgrade to 10.8.4
The down side of deleting com.apple.network.identification.plist is that you lose all your Network preferences. As a frequent traveller, this was not attractive to me. I tried copying com.apple.network.identification.plist from the .old directory as root to try to restore them, but that didn't work.
An alternate, less destructive fix that worked for me: add a location, change to that location. Bam. Done.
    >SystemPreferences >Network > Location > Edit Locations +to add a new location, Apply, then Reboot.
I kept all my preferred networks intact AND solved the issue of Wifi not connectiong automatically.
Not sure what the root issue is, and that bothers the geek in me, but having lost my Saturday Morning trying different solutions, I'm going to let that sleeping dog lie and be glad it's working. ;-)
