Sleeping in a confined space

Personally, I don't like sleeping in a confined space; I'd much rather sleep on a queen or king sized bed. :P But what about my MBP? Will it overheat or messup if I sleep it and then put it in its case for long periods of time? Does the MBP generate any heat or anything when it is asleep? Thanks for your responses in advance!

You should be fine..your MBP should be as well. The RAM is powered up during sleep but only enough to keep the data intact. If you plan on not using the machine for a while I would suggest that you sleep it then remove the power from the machine (battery and adapter). That will put the machine in safe sleep mode. That means the next time you boot the machine it will restore the data from the hard drive and you can pick up where you left off. Safe sleep does not deplete your battery.

  • Quad core Pro in a confined space - running hot. Problem?

I moved into a new home with a nice desk already there. It's the kind with a specific cubby built in for a CPU - which my quad-core fits into nicely. I've noticed a lot of heat coming off of it since moving it in there though. Should I be worried about it running too hot? Do I need to give it more breathing room?
    Thanks.

The machine's running just fine - it's supposed to be pushing a lot of hot air. Where things will get too hot is if you continue using it in a confined space without proper ventilation. If the hot air (exhaust) can't flow out freely or is obstructed, then you'll likely end up with temps inside the machine higher than they're supposed to. Over time, that will cause your machine to fail.
Extension cables don't cost much, but even on the floor beside the desk would be an upgrade from an enclosed space. Good luck finding the location that works best for you.

  • MAC AIR Crashes on wake from sleep

    Dear All,
I have a user's Mac Air exhibiting the ubiquitous 'wake from sleep' issue that seems to have reared its head at every OS since 10.2, increasingly occurring with or without various apps running at time of sleep.
Upon tapping space bar after a night's sleep, we get a login screen with sometimes the desktop background, sometimes black, but always with the login panel available but tantalisingly NO blinking cursor or ability to enter password into the box for logging in.
Solution even after 20-40 mins (user is a patient person :-) is to press and hold the power button.
Syslog examination upon reboot shows nothing at all for the corresponding time period, just the info pertaining to the hard reboot.
...This last fact makes me think it is below the OS level and to do with the SSD power management / SMC / firmware relevant to both the above - if I am correct, after a couple of hours sleeping, as the laptop considers it is now in deep sleep, the contents of RAM get written to the SSD.
So, upon wake up calls from peripherals or built in mouse/trackpad, IF it cannot load the data written to the (still sleeping??) SSD back into RAM, then of course logging in will present a problem ?
I'd love to finally get to understand this completely, especially as it has occurred with all recent versions of the MAC OS, and on pretty much all hardware (acc to google).
Like many of us over the years, with previous OS versions' wake-from-sleep issues I have just taken the varying anecdotal advice (run /sbin/fsck/ -f/y, or fix permissions, or reset PRAM / SMC / trash windowserver prefs / apply combo update etc etc etc, turn around three times and kiss a back issue of Mac User magazine) and moved on...
.... this time, with yet another OS version, this annoyingly prevalent bug undermines my enthusiasm for continuing with Apple (I rely heavily on various remote access apps and having a non-local machine not wake up for me could be be a huge issue).
Anyone delved deep into this one and come back with an answer ?
Currently I am toying with using terminal to remove the hibernation aspect of sleep ..
    Show settings:
      pmset -g
    Change:
      sudo pmset -a autopoweroff 0
    or, change aspects of it.
I am distressed though that the famously user friendly (and my personal favourite) OS has me resorting to its equivalent of the command line just to get a user's laptop to reliably wake from sleep - it's 2014 and this should have been sorted soooo many moons ago.
    Thanks for reading,
    Andy

  • Mac Pro sleep / restart issues - power management

    1) Firstly, I read the "solved" forum about the restart / sleep issues. Nothing worked for me but there were useful links:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macpro.html
You can post the report to Apple (as someone suggested)
    2) On a separate blog, a poster stated "I called Apple Support a little over a week ago and was told by the “product specialist” to delete three power management preference files. I did. The next morning after a night of sleep, I touched the space bar and the Mac promptly rebooted..."
DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THESE THREE "power management" FILES ARE???
    Thank you

I just had a quality callback from Apple:
the files in question are located in :
    hd (startup harddrive)/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
(almost at the bottom of the list)
trash the entire SystemConfiguration folder, then restart.
NOTE: this will delete your airport settings for e.g. a home network (you need
to re-input the settings for the home network).
Thwy will call me back next week

  • My mac volume level won't change after sleep

My "Line Out" (2.1 Speaker System) does not seem to accept volume changing commands either by the Apple Wireless Keyboard, or System Preferences > Sound. This happens all the time after I put the computer to sleep. Before when I switched to Internal Speakers then back it would "unlock" and let me adjust the volume, but that is no longer the case (I should point out that the volume controls are not disabled, it's just that changing the level does not do anything). I can however adjust and use Internal Speakers just fine. This forces me to restart my computer in order to adjust the volume again.

Resetting the SMC and PRAM did not solve my problem, however this did manage to solve my problem across reboots and sleep:
    1. Command + Space / Open Spotlight.
    2. Search for "Audio MIDI Setup".
    3. Select your sound system.
    4. Change the format to something else, then change it back.
At this point it should fix the volume level and allow you to change it. I have only done this once, and it has worked since I made this topic.
Let me know if it helps.

  • PowerMac G4 Won't Wake Up from Sleep

My mom's computer is a PowerMac G4 (specs at the bottom of post). The RAM was recently upgraded, a new wired keyboard and mouse was added (the new flat one), and an external hard drive was added. Around this time (not necessarily coinciding with these upgrades) the computer stopped waking from sleep; needing to be restarted to recover. At that time, the machine had OSX Tiger.
We installed the latest OSX Leopard thinking it may help fix this problem...but it didn't.
_*Any suggestions on what may be causing this or how to fix?*_
Thanks again to this great discussions community!

A USB device can cause this. First disconnect all external USB devices except your kbd & mouse. Does the problem remain? If so disconnect the mouse & let the Mac sleep. Press the Space bar on the kbd. Will it wake? If not, connect the mouse but disconnect the kbd & let it sleep. Does moving the mouse wake the Mac?

  • HP s5710t won't wake up from sleep mode unless re-booted

I have an HPs5710t with Windows 7 Home Premium system with Service Pack 1. Recently, the computer will go to sleep but tapping the space bar, mouse or keyboard will not wake it up. I've cleaned out the inside (canned air) and re-set the power settings so it "never" goes to sleep. But it does and the monitor (HPvs17e) blue light pulsates.  If I turn off the computer and re-boot, it will eventually turn on, but only after fiddling about 5 minutes. Can someone help me and talk me through what the issue may be?  Thanks!

We are using Win7 64bit with various HP laptops and with mostly all HP Compaq LA2205wg monitors.
I've done the following on several different computers at work that are having an issue similar to yours. The monitors go to sleep and the laptop goes to sleep thereafter. When we press the space bar to wake it up, we can hear the laptop dinging. We cannot turn the monitor power button on or off and have to unplug it to get any response.
All desks were having the same issue and all but one appears to be resolved which is a different model than the majority we have here. I am curious if there was something in the driver for the LA2205wg fixed the issue and hasn't been put into the ZR24w.
Here are what I found on various websites that looked promising (sorry I was only able to site one source.) I am trying the full breadth on the ZR24w:
    - *In bios* Updated driver - was set to generic pnp
    - *In bios* Set Runtime Power Management to Disable
    - *Set monitor* to not auto detect source and manually set it
    - *On monitor* Main Menu > Management > DDC/CI Support > set to OFF.

  • Ext. hard drive ejects when MBP wakes from sleep

When I wake my MBP from sleep (by clicking the space bar), the ext. firewire hard (MyBook 500 GB) drive ejects leaving the msg. that it was not properly ejected and data might have been lost, etc. Is there a better way to wake it that won't cause the ext. hard drive to eject?
    Thanks

    Hi Logan,
You should post over in the Unibody forums, where you'll find many more people who own the same machine as you do (this area deals with the Original MBP).

I totally feel your pain. I too have a similar setup, a G4 running Tiger wherein I ripped my vinyl to a higher bitrate than my CD copies. I have in one of thses threads a script that was written for me that would rummage across the home network and pull down all the lower bitrate copies and move them, but I had a hard drive snafu, ran out of space and never got around to it..
I DO think however, that you can display the bitrate of the files in the list view options within iTunes and sort the files that way, and move the duplicate files you don't want to the trash. From within iTunes.. Let me go fire up the livingroom frankenbox to check..
Yup.. If you use the View Options you can sort through the master list in iTunes by bitrate..
    http://imageupper.com/i/?S0300010100011D1344782818223713
Takes a bit to sort out the tracks but it's workable..
As to joining the libraries that you've gotten them cleaned up, you need to drop all the song files into a single folder and let iTunes sort them into the default location. There is a submenu here:

  • Difference between Simple, EPC Gen 1 & EPC Gen 2 tags?

    Hi All,
    1. Can some one explain me the difference between Simple, EPC Gen 1 & EPC Gen 2 tags?
    2. When are they used?
    3. Which is the one, widely used?
    Thanks,
    Shridhar..

    Hi Shridhar,
Actually earlier I only mentioned the main difference between the two that was the Q Algorithm and mentioned some links which would help you to get some more differences.
From your reply I thought should make more easier for you.I have segregated some differences for you from those Links .
    <b>Difference between GEN1 and GEN2 tags.</b>
<b>New features that were incorporated in the Gen 2 protocol.</b>
<b>1.The biggest difference between Gen 1 and Gen 2 is that there is now a single global protocol.</b> The first-generation epc had two protocols, Class 0 and Class 1, and the same reader could not read both unless it was a multiprotocol reader. The International Organization for Standardization (iso) also approved two uhf air-interface protocols, 18000-6A and 18000-6B, as international standards, so there have been four uhf standards.
    <b>
    2. Another important aspect of the UHF Gen 2 protocol is it was designed to optimize performance in different regulatory environments around the world.</b>
Europe’s communications authoritiesrecently adopted reader regulations that are more relaxed, but the new rules are still quite stringent compared with those in the North America. Because the Gen 2 protocol uses the available radio spectrum more efficiently, it will provide better performance in Europe than any other uhf protocol. “Gen2 creates a good foundation for higher-function products, such as Class 2 and Class 3 tags and readers”.
    <b>3. Dense-reader mode</b>
The Gen 2 standard allows readers to operate in three different modes: Single-reader mode, multi-reader mode and dense-reader mode. To function optimally, readers will need to operate in
dense-reader mode when more than 50 readers are present within a building, such as within a distribution center. Dense reader mode is designed to prevent readers from interfering with
one another, which could be a problem if many readers are used in a confined space, particularly in Europe and other regions where only a small band of the uhf spectrum has been allotted
    for rfid systems.
<b>4. Dual methods of backscatter encoding</b>
The Gen 2 protocol also supports another method of encoding the backscatter signal called FMO. The purpose of allowing the reader to use either FMO or Miller subcarrier was to improve
performance not just when there are many readers in a facility but also when there is a lot of noise in the area.
FMO, a format used effectively in the current ISO standards, is fast but susceptible to interference. Miller subcarrier is slower but works better in noisy environments.
    <b>5. Secure read-write memory</b>
First-generation EPC Class 0 tags are programmed at the factory, when the chips are made. First-generation Class 1 tags are user programmable, meaning that an end user company can write EPC’s to the tag after taking delivery. In most applications today, Class 1 tags are programmed one by one as they come off a spool.
Gen 2 tags are field programmable, meaning that readers can write information to tags even if they are attached to cases on a pallet or a conveyer belt. Gen 2 tags will feature three required memory banks—one bank for storing the epc, one for passwords, one for tag identification (the tag stores information about itself)—and an optional bank for memory that end users can use for whatever purpose they wish (one of the few optional features tags can have). User memory could be to store codes to indicate where products are being shipped to, for instance.
The memory banks can be locked temporarily or permanently. So a product supplier might write an epc to a tag and lock it permanently. It might then write the identification number of a store that the product is being shipped to in the optional user memory. The supplier might lock that memory with a password to avoid having it overwritten, but a manager in the store’s distribution center might have the option of unlocking the memory (if the manufacturer supplies the password), changing the store id to indicate the destination has changed, and then locking the memory again.
    <b>6. The Q algorithm</b>
One issue with the Gen 1 protocols is that they require rfid readers to use the tags’ unique serial numbers to singulate tags (to identify them uniquely). If two tags have the same epc, they confuse the reader. Some retailers are considering using tags with the same epc—that is, information similar to what they have on bar codes today—as an interim measure as they move from bar codes to rfid and prepare their software systems to handle unique ids. Those retailers asked EPCglobal's Hardware Action Group to make it possible to singulate the tags even if two or
more tags have the exact same epc.
This Algorithm is mentioned in my first reply above.
    <b>7. Sessions</b>
One weakness of the Gen1 protocols was the possibility that one reader would interfere with another reader's ongoing counting of a group of tags. So let's say a fixed reader is counting all the tagged items on a shelf. It reads a tag and commands it to go to sleep so it can read the next tag. When it is halfway through 100 items, someone comes along with a handheld reader, looking for a specific item on that shelf. The handheld commands all the tags to wake up and respond. Now the fixed reader has to start the counting all over again. To avoid this problem, the Gen 2 protocol introduces something called sessions. Each tag will be able to operate within four
separate sessions. A retailer or manufacturer could set up their system so that all fixed readers read tags in session 1, and all handhelds use session 2. So if the fixed reader puts the tags to
sleep in session 1, the handheld reader could communicate with the tags in session 2 and not interfere with the ongoing count by the fixed reader in session 1.
    <b>Enhancements made to the Gen 1 protocols.</b>
    <b>
    1.Faster read rates:</b>
The Gen 2 protocol is designed to enable readers to read data from and write data to rfid tags much faster than the Gen 1 protocols. Gen 2 supports a tag-to-reader data transfer rate of up
to 640 kilobits per second, versus up to 80 kilobits per second for Gen 1 Class 0 and 140 kilobits per second for Gen 1 Class 1.
    <b>2. Fewer ghost reads</b>
One problem early adopters have encountered with the Gen 1 Class 0 protocol is ghost reads. Sometimes the reader thinks it has read a tag with a particular Id when no tag with that id is present.
    <b>3. Longer passwords</b>.
Now to talk about your queries.
    >>Q's:1. What if the Tag ID is alpha-numeric?
let me know from which link you  read this so that I can comment on it.(If i missed it).
    >>Gen 2:These type of Tags have the ability to generate random numbers. The reader asks the tag to generate random numbers.
Q's:1. What is the match/criteria upon which Tag/s respond to the reader with the EPC, after which the reader can continue the flow.
Now if you again go through the Q Algorithm mentioned in my above reply. This query is answered.
Well I again mention the part of the Algorithm
" Gen 2 tags have the ability to generate random numbers. The reader will tell the tags the range in which it should generate a random number by issuing a query command with a Q value ranging from 0 to 15. If it often gets back no response to its queries, it will automatically decrease the Q value. If it gets more than one tag responding, it will increase the Q value, thereby increasing the range of numbers that can be generated by the tags. The reader might issue a query with a parameter of Q=4. The tags generate two random numbers, the first one ranging from zero and 65,535, and the second ranging from zero and 2 to the power of Q, minus 1. If Q is four, then 2 to the fourth power is 16, minus 1 equals 15.  So all tags choose a second random number ranging from zero and 15. The reader asks any tag that chose zero for their second random number to respond. If one tag has zero, then it responds with the first random number, between zero and 65,535, and the reader acknowledges it. Since the tag has now been singulated, the reader could simply count the tag as present ("I know a tag with a random number of 45,101 is in the field"). It could write an epc to the tag, if it doesn't have one, or it could ask tag 45,101 for its epc if it does have one. It then asks the remaining tags to subtract one from their second random number and singulates the next tag that has a zero, and it keeps doing that until all the tags are singulated. If no tags choose zero for their first random number, then the reader asks all the tags to decrement their random number by one, and it keeps doing that until a tag with zero responds. If two tags respond, the reader can't read either tag, so it issues a negative acknowledge, which tells the tags to wait for another query until they respond again. "This protocol makes it extremely unlikely that a reader will singulate two tags when it meant to only talk to one" . "
The above mentioned is the match/criteria upon which Tag/s respond to the reader with the EPC, after which the reader can continue the flow.
I suppose this should clear all your doubts.Let me know if still there are any.
    Thanks,
    Pawan

  • How can I disable QuickLook

This is technically not a new question. I asked it nearly a year ago and got no satisfactory response. I find that when I waken my iMac from sleep by pressing the space bar it highlights an apparently random icon on the desktop. Then, if I hit the space bar again QuickLook does its thing and that folder or document expands in the middle of the screen. How can I either disable QuickLook completely or, failing that, either disable the random highlighting feature or switch the function that activates it from the space bar to a more obscure key that I won't be pressing by accident? And please, no one tell me that I should waken the computer by depressing a key other than the space bar. That is not a solution, it's a capitulation.

    Roger,
I find that when I waken my iMac from sleep by pressing the space bar it highlights an apparently random icon on the desktop. Then, if I hit the space bar again QuickLook does its thing and that folder or document expands in the middle of the screen.
Hitting the space bar once should only awaken your computer.
It's more likely that the icon had already been selected when your computer went to sleep. If an icon is selected on the Desktop, hitting the space bar will open Quick Look as you describe.
I think what you may be doing is tapping your space key two or more times to wake the computer.
One tap is sufficient to wake the computer. Subsequent taps will either select an icon or open Quick Look for any icon already selected.
And please, no one tell me that I should waken the computer by depressing a key other than the space bar.
I won't tell you that. But I will tell you to not press the space key more than once to wake the computer.

  • Important!! Improve the life and performance of the battery.

Reduce the operating temperature and increase battery life
The battery in your notebook PC is designed to provide the necessary amount of energy for the processor while maintaining HP high safety standards. As a result, the battery may not charge or may stop providing power to the notebook when the battery temperature exceeds the specified, design safety level.
If the battery life appears shorter than normal, the battery stops charging before it is 99%-100% full and the battery appears warmer than usual, the battery has most likely reached its designed "no charge" safety state. The battery will no longer charge until the temperature condition is corrected.
Try one of the following methods to correct the battery temperature:
When charging the battery, do not use applications that require large amounts of system resources such as graphic or memory intensive applications, heavy and extended hard drive usage.
Turn off your notebook and remove the battery to allow it to return to a safe operating temperature.
Make sure the notebook PC is operating on a hard surface. Using the Notebook PC on a bed or sofa may block the vents causing the notebook PC to heat up and shut down.
By taking these steps, the battery will return to its normal operating temperature range and continue to charge and discharge as designed.
Calibrating the battery while PC not in use
Recalibrating the battery requires a cycle of a complete charge and a complete discharge. To recalibrate the battery while using the PC is not is use complete the following steps.
The recalibration may take 1-5 hours depending on the age of the battery and the configuration of the notebook PC you own. The PC should not be used while you perform the following steps. Completing all the following steps will also calibrate the battery so that the power meter readings are accurate.
    Shut down the notebook PC
Connect the AC Adapter to the notebook PC and to an electrical socket.
Charge the Notebook PC until the Battery Charge light is Green. This indicates the battery is completely charged.
Press and release the Power Button to start the computer.
Press the F8 key several times when the HP Logo displays.
When the Windows Advanced Startup Menu displays, select the Startup in Safe Mode option.
Remove the AC power adapter from the notebook PC.
Allow the battery to discharge completely until the notebook PC turns off.
The battery is now calibrated and the battery level reading on the power meter is now accurate.
If you are not using the notebook regularly then please unplug the AC adapter and shut down the notebook. By following these practices will improve the life and performance of the battery. Here is a quick list of Do's and Don'ts for the care of your Li-On batteries:
    Do's
When you receive a new Notebook or Tablet PC, leave the battery to fully charge overnight.
Condition a new battery by using it until it is fully discharged, and then re-charge it fully. Doing this once a month will help to accurately calibrate your battery.
Always ensure the battery is recharged as soon as possible after it becomes fully discharged. A battery will be permanently damaged if left for an extended length of time in a fully discharged state.
Remember that a Lithium-Ion battery will slowly deteriorate; a new battery will always perform better than one that is 6-months old.
Remember that the battery half-life is rated for a certain total number of charge/discharge cycles (see your User Manual or Quick Start Guide for the rating). For example, a battery that is rated for 3 hours and 500 charge/discharge cycles, will still be considered as within specification, even if it only lasts for 1 hour 45 minutes after 500 charge/discharge cycles.
Heat is the worst enemy of a battery. Allow plenty of air to circulate around the Notebook/Tablet PC, so that the battery is kept as cool as possible when charging and also when in use. If provided, use the integrated 'legs' under the Notebook to raise the notebook and improve air circulation.
Remove the battery if storing for several months (the battery should be at approximately 50% charge or higher).
If you use a NoteBus or if charging your Notebooks or Tablet PCs in a confined space, allow for adequate ventilation in order to keep the batteries as cool as possible.
    Don'ts
Do Not - Expose the battery to excessive heat or cold (i.e. outside the range of 10-35 degrees Centigrade ambient).
Do Not - Store the battery in a fully charged state (store batteries with about 50% charge).
Do Not - Allow a nearly flat battery to be unused for more than a month or so. The battery will slowly discharge until it becomes fully discharged and this will permanently damage the battery cells.
Do Not - Charge your Notebook/Tablet PC inside a carry case - the battery may overheat.
Do Not - Charge your Notebook/Tablet PC when stacked on top of each other - the battery may overheat.
Remember: Your battery is slowly degrading all the time, even if it is not used. Keeping your battery as cool as possible will slow down this degradation considerably.

  • Installing a second hard drive in a G4 - advice needed please

    Hi......
I have a G4 Quicksilver (2002) model and I also have a G4 Digital Audio model as well which is currently surplus to requirements.....
I would like to take out the 20Gb hard drive from the older G4 and put it into the Quicksilver as a second internal hard drive (for extra storage capacity....)
I have seen the instructions regarding installing a second hard drive and it doesn't seem to complicated....
I just want to check because the 20Gb hard drive has the operating system on it for the older G4.....
Do I have to fire up the machine and erase the hard drive and then take it out and put it into the Quicksilver...?
Or am I able to simply take it out, put it in the Quicksilver and erase it when I restart the machine....?
I don't have the original installation discs for the OSX...
I talked to a Mac technician at work and he said I can just take out the 20Gb hard drive and put it in as a 'slave' drive and I have to 'bend some pins' (I think he said) when I install it.........and I can then erase the second hard drive and use it as storage.....
any advice would be greatly appreciated.....
    Thanks

    Hi, craigkelleigh -
Ony many drives the label showing jumper pins configurations will be on the end of the drive, just above the block of pins; on other drives it may be on the top, rarely on the bottom.
The block of jumper pins is at the same end of the drive where the data cable (wide, flat ribbon cable) and the power connector plug in.
It is best to move the jumpers before installing the hard drive - they're quite small and hard to manipulate in a confined space. Important - do not move jumper pins if the drive is powered up (running).
As far as removing and installing the drive, you can view/download a how-to PDF or movieclip from these pages -
    G4 (Digital Audio) - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75313
    G4 Quicksilver - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75314
In addition, with regard to specific jumper positions, that depends on the make (and sometimes the model) of the drive. There are some resources available on-line, such as jumper diagrams for specific drives. If you would give us the specific make (manufacturer) and model number of your hard drive (that info should be shown on labels affixed to the drive), we may be able to direct you to a specific website page with that info.

  • 8800 GS drivers

Like many others I am suffering freezes and BSOD's whilst gaming. I have isolated the cause to the 8800 GS driver (although using wireless mouse/keyboard made it worse).
When I check what driver I have via the XP control panel/systems/device manager etc. it tells me I have a NVidia 8800 GS, version 6.14.11.6763, dated 1/24/2008.
When I use the Auto Check on the NVidia site it tells me that I have a 8800 GS and the current installed driver is version 167.63. As the last five numbers are the same as detailed in Windows, at least both checks are giving the same result. (I would not have been surprised if they were different!)
My first question is this. Where did this driver come from: It is not listed in Boot Camp 2.0 which I have installed (but not 2.1). Was it on the OS X installation disc or perhaps the Win XP SP3 disc?
I also used the Nvidia website to tell me what update I needed for my 167.63 driver. The recommendation was:
"Latest Geforce Release for Notebooks Version 179.28 - Release date 18 Dec 2008" . And of course the drivers included in that update are all "M" type including 8800 M GS
So my second question is: Why is NVidia recommending a Notebook update when it has identified my existing driver as a desk top version? I would have expected it to refer me to the Jan 8 2009 release of update 181.20 which included my 8800 GS!!
    Confused from England!

    Dealbata,
I am at work currently and dont have access to my Mac, but I found the imac's 8800 specs (cant remember where) and matched them to the specs of the 8800M GTS specs supplied by nvidia. I had also read that the iMacs use the notebook version of both CPUs and graphics cards because the of the lower power consumption and heat output. It is necessary to keep those both low due to the confined space of the imac.
Personally, when I update the drivers I use the drivers for the 8800GS (desktop version) because they are the newest drivers and are not Beta such as the notebook drivers are. They function great for me. ALWAYS REMEMBER TO SET A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT BEFORE UPDATING JUST IN CASE!!!! It is a little tricky to install the drivers and I am going off of memory here but here goes:
    1. Download the newest drivers for the 8800GS
    2. Extract to a folder where you will remember the location
    3. Click on start, control panels, then system. Go to the hardware tab, and device manager. Once the window opens, double click on display, then nvidia 8800. Click on driver in the new window, then update driver button.
    4. When windows wants to connect to windows update click no not this time. >click next, Then Click on Install from specific location. >click next. Then click choose specific location >click next.
    5. in the next screen you should see the nvidia 8800gs in the list. Click have disk and navigate to the folder where you extracted the new driver you download.
6**Windows will give you a warning saying this driver might not be supported and may yield unwanted results, etc. Click ok and install the driver. Once the driver installs, you will need to restart.
    7. After restarting the new driver will be installed. You can verify the new driver version as well.
    Good Luck!
