Sleeping Mac not accessible

I have an Airport Extreme bought new in 2011 and several Macs all with support for waking over wifi and with this feature turned on in the energy saver preferences. This should make their services visible and accessible even if they are asleep thanks to the Bonjour sleep proxy in the Extreme. But it's (usually) not working. The Macs don't show up in the Finder sidebar and I can't connect manually either. Am I missing something?

Hello,
I have had this problem as well. As far as I know, there are a few things that could be causing the problem. In addition to what has already been discussed, I've found that the problem is my mouse. I have a wireless optical USB mouse that I use, and it is the main cause of why my computer won't sleep. I have a PS2 -to-USB splitter that I plug both my Logitech keyboard and my wireless Mi mouse into, which joins into 1 USB input. Once I unplugged that splitter from the back of my Mini, it would go to sleep just fine. This is sort of annoying to have to do when I want the computer to go to sleep, but it's the only way I can get it to work properly.
If you have any type of third party wireless mouse or keyboard, that may be the problem. I'm not exactly sure if there are any software updates or anything that can help with this situation yet, but in the meantime a good habit to get into would be to just unplug your mouse and/or keyboard before putting the computer to sleep. This is what I have to do, and while it's not as convenient as I'd like it to be, it's a lot better than shutting your computer down all the time, or letting the computer sleep/wake every half hour/every hour, or whatever you have it set to do.

Apple has really crappy NTFS read-only that does not always work. And it is probably a licensing issue.
Paragon Software is constantly being updated and supported with their NTFS for Mac OS X - they also have an HFS+ driver for Windows that works - Apple's HFS+ read-only driver for Boot Camp / Windows does not.
I keep seeing problems and lack of support for MacFUSE, that could change.

Genius bar told me to erase the harddisk and install OSX Maverick again. This has not changed the problems with the system settings

You need to Repartition the drive as One partition which will erase all data from it and then reinstall OS X. then with the initial setup system you chose the language on the first screen that comes up. That sets the language for the whole system.
There is no other way of completely removing certain information created by a previous owner. this hold strue whether you are selling or give a Mac to someone.
To do the repartitioning you need to use the Online Internet Recovery system, if the Mac came with Lion 10.7 or above, or from the original system reinstall discs that came with it when it was new.

    Hi Klaus1
So, I tried all the suggestions and followed the links - all to no avail.
as you can see, (screenshot below) my iMac is a 21.5 inch late 2009 model which isn't showing in the updates listed above
My system report shows that my Mac has the following:
I reset the PRAM and the SMC - still have the same error message when I try to burn discs. I've used both CD's and DVD's and tried with my external Discwriter too.
    Any further suggestions??

I have an olde iMac that once I have an older iMAC that once burned CD's with no issues. Now I get an error message saying "The attempt to burn a disc failed. The device is not accessible, probably because it was removed". I have never had it touched so the device was not removed. Please advise as to what could be the problem. How to fix. Thanks

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM first, if that doesn't help try a cleaning disc.....and then buy an inexpensive external burner. Slimline super drive failures are all too common.
    To reset the SMC
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • How can I transfer files between a PC and a Mac NOT on the same network?

I have an iCloud account, a Time Capsule and a Seagate Free Agent portable hard drive. Which ways can I transfer files (any or all three?) and how?  Here's my dilemma: I'm a graphic designer and I work on a PC at my office. At home I use my MacBook Pro...same programs, save files. However, I had trouble earlier saving my new documents onto the Free Agent from my MacBook Pro as the Free Agent was Read Only and original files on it were from the PC. The PC is not on my Time Capsule network and not accessible or even close to my MacBook. I simply want to be able to save the files I updated/changed on my Mac to somewhere that I can access them later from that PC...right now they are saved to my Documents folder. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Format the external drive as FAT32 or ExFAT. Both computers will then be able to read and write to it.

  • HD Not Accessible to Repair Permissions

Hello. I hope you can help me isolate the error that is keeping my Intel iMac G5 from booting properly. I’m running 10.4.
It froze after I’d been backing up onto DVD/dumping old data (about 20GB worth). Whenever I tried restarting the screen would freeze on the grey apple logo, sometimes with the swirly icon.
When I ran Disk Utility off the install disk at first it indicated “error detected” on mass storage, but later said it was fine. But I could not run Repair successfully (I kept getting "repair failed" messages), and the Repair Disk Permissions button was not accessible (greyed out).
I could not startup in safe mode. And if I tried to restart in DU the only option was a Network (which I'm not hooked up to).
Once I got a Kernal panic screen but most of the time it was just a grey apple with the fan hitting 900 rpm.
Finally I ran DiskWarrior and in 15 minutes it had cleaned out and rebuilt my HD. I thought I was home clear.
However, even though Disk Utility now says my HD is fine, it still does not allow me to Repair Disk Permissions - the option is greyed out. And if I boot up pressing Option to select a Startup Disk, the rebuilt drive is not one of them.
It appears my /Library/Receipts folder is empty.
What’s more, if I try to run an admin command in Terminal, like
    sudo diskutil repairPermissions /
    I get the message:
    -bash: sudo: command not found
In fact, any way I try typing sudo I get a “command not found” message, even if I try to run other command like chmod.
    When I type:
    Users
    I get
    Users: command not found.
    So I typed:
    Echo $PATH
    And get
    /bin:/sbin:/usr/bn:/usr/sbin:/usr/libexec:/System/Library/CoreServices
I’m not sure at this point whether the fact that the DiskWarrior-rebuilt drive doesn’t show up among Startup options (when I boot with option key) is because of missing/broken permissions; an empty /Library/Receipts folder; missing users; or a missing path.
Any and all help is appreciated. Thank you.

Oy. I purchased an external drive and began installing Mac OSX onto it, so that I could then migrate all files from the unbootable hard drive before running an Archive & Install. That part seemed to go smoothly. But a few problems have emerged:
    1. Though I was prompted to keep Disk 2 of the install ready, it never asked me for it, even though I ran the installation 2 or 3 times. Consequently while I can select the external drive when booting up command-S, I can only see Install window, Disk Utility or Terminal windows - never a desktop, preferences drop down, help menu, finder, all the things I'd typically see when launching my machine. Is this normal? Is there a way to force it to install only disk 2 if it has things it needs for full bootable GUI / access?
    2. Booting up with the install disk, in disk utility I can see both drives but still cannot repair permissions on my affected HD. I tried via Terminal (repairPermissions, chmod or chown) commands; I keep getting error messages (command not found).
    3. Switching cd / to my new drive in Terminal, I was able, I think, to change permissions (755) but when I open Disk Utility the drive is still not writable and "Repair Disk Permissions" is still grayed out.
    4. I could not open Migration Assistant on the new drive via Disk Utility, so I copied it from the HD into its own folder on the new one, but am really confused about the whole Disk Image thing. If I create a new disk image and try to open it, convert or checksum it, it still is grayed out, I can never just open it. I tried running commands in Terminal to run that application on the external drive, pointing to the new folder, to the .app, to the contents, .dmg, and no commands seem to work, I keep getting the command not found message.
If I just run the A&I, I fear I'll lose my data which is why I wanted to migrate everything over before I did so. But if the user / owner permissions are screwed up and the only way to fix them is A&I, I don't know what else to do.
Is there ANY way to boot from the install, run Migration Assistant from the external drive (either through Disk Utility or Terminal) and copy all files from HD? If not, I guess I'll have to cross fingers and A&I.
Gee, I used to love my Mac ...

  • IMac G5 - Deep sleep - Will not wake up + Fans rev-up.

iMac G5 ( not under any recall programs and no bloated capacitors )
will not come out of deep sleep and the fans start to rev up after 1 min and
    stay revved up on hi.
    Tried all possible solutions:
Via keyboard : Reset pram + Open firmware
Reset SMU via power cord and the internal smu button.
    Sleep light firmware is installed
Reinstalled 10.4.0 and went to 10.4.7
Tried to scare him with a glass of water, still nothing.
With iStat all temps a cool.
External fan on the PSU to keep it cooler.
Forced the iMac to have the fans on hi by booting in single user mode.
Rebooted. Fans still on hi. logged on then let it go to sleep on its own.
Monitor set at 1 min and HD at 5.
Monitor went to sleep but not the HD.
Forced deep sleep and it worked.
    But Same symptoms on wakeup.
    Removed the cover:
From a cold power up to video display all 3 led's light up.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301283
    Deep sleep:
Leds 1 and 2 stay on, led 3 shuts off, normal .
    Wake from sleep:
Led 1 and 2 are still on.
Led 3 lights up for a fraction of a second and does not come back on.
Checks the disk drive then spins down ( when a disk is present )
Checks the HD then spins down.
1 min later the fans start revving on hi.
    Force reboot is required.
Symptoms started after 10.4.8 update. ( Yes I know about unsanity docks )
Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not. I wait until that fat lady sings.
Please keep this post to the specific symptoms and to PPC G5 imacs.
Has any one ( iMacs G5) with these symptoms been cured?.
How can you uninstall the sleep light firmware patch to reinstall it?
I know that it stops the fans from revving.
    Any known Open firmware manual?
PM B&W G4 1Ghz Sonnet :: And still strong   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   If it aint broke, tweak it. If it breaks then fix it and tweak it again.

If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following line:
    reset-nvram
press the return key on your keyboard
    set-defaults
    press return
    reset-all
    press return
Your Mac will reboot. Once it's running, put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong.
Still didn't work? Might be time to call AppleCare or see an Apple Genius or a technician.
    Cheers!

  • Broadcast a bluetooth signal to wake a sleeping mac.

My goal is to be able to drive, via screenshare, my mac-mini from my macbook so I don't have to leave a keyboard and mouse with the mini.
My problem is that I can't connect to my mac mini if it is asleep. There is a post in Discussions that talked about that but it is archived and didn't drive to a conclusion that works for me.
There were many ideas discussed but I think the most obvious was not mentioned. The most low impact thing on these macs that can be left active during sleep mode is bluetooth. Which can be used to wake a sleeping mac like with a keyboard or mouse.
So, does anyone know how I could transmit a bluetooth signal from my macbook to wake the mini?

Of course these options you mention are possible solutions to wake the mini. I could also walk across the room and push the button. But come on, what is the fun in that? I'm just trying to make my setup as cool as possible. I mean, not many people have a 42" LCD in their kitchen with a mini attached. If you got it...flaunt it right?
I was hoping that if I threw this out there I would get a bite from someone that had started hacking the bluetooth communications on these new macs. It seems that there are so many cool things that can be done once there is a better understanding of how to take advantage of that communications channel.
Thanks for your response just the same.

  • Photos visible in iPhoto application but not accessible for upload

Any help anyone can provide with this is greatly appreciated. I took pictures of a friends wedding and have been trying to order a photobook as a gift. I decided to try to use iPhoto to make the book. I don't use iPhoto very often and at the start of this, my iMac was running on the Tiger OS and an old version of iPhoto (I think 5 or 6). After completing the  first version of my photobook, I tried to place an order, but got a message that my version of iPhoto wasn't supported any longer and I'd  have to upgrade.
I called the Apple store and ordered the Mac Box Set to upgrade my operating system to Snow Leopard and my iLife to version 11. The woman at the Apple store had me check my system info., available space, etc. and she assured me that my system should be able to handle the upgrade. I went ahead with the upgrade, loading the new operating system first and then iLife. The install seemed to go just fine, I never got any error messages and all the applications appear to function properly. So, I used the new version of iPhoto to create a photobook. I then placed the order the first time. On my end the process went smoothly and the upload completed without interruption. However, I got an e-mail message 4 days later saying my order couldn't be completed because files did not upload properly. So, I tried to place the order again, following the instructions to make sure that all my other applications were closed, etc. Once again the process seemed to be completed without any issues. However, now a week later, I once  again got the error message that my order could not be completed because files did not upload properly.
So, I decided to try to place an order through a different vendor. Now I have discovered that all my recent photos (despite appearing in the iPhoto) are not accessible when I try to access them for upload to the vendor's site. The icon for iPhoto library is grayed out and there is no longer an option to access my photo rolls through finder. So, now I am unable to place the order for the photobook.
Can anyone help me figure out how to fix this? Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated.

Nothing to be fixed. Just a little learning for you.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
