Sleeping MBP + ACD + Logitech KBM = SBBOD

I have recently bought one of the new 24" Apple Cinema Displays to plug my MBP into at home to replace my old iMac. I have a Logitech S530 Wireless keyboard and mouse that I use with it, and have the latest Logitech Control Panel.
The KB/Mouse receiver is plugged into the USB port on the monitor. The problem I am running into is if I reconnect my laptop to the monitor and KB/Mouse the laptop gets the SBBOD and I have to do a hard shutdown. The steps I take are
1) Open the laptop, type password etc
2) Plug in power
3) Plug in monitor, ACD comes on, laptop is still responding.
4) Plug in the USB cable from the monitor, wait about 10 seconds, lockup. Every time, without fail.
I can move the cursor around with the trackpad, but clicks don't respond, and I can't do anything with the keyboard.
At work I have an older 20" apple monitor, and I don't have this problem. There I am using a Logitech Wave setup instead of the S530, but it uses the same driver software.
Any suggestions on how to stop this from locking up so I don't have to shutdown my laptop just to plug it into the monitor?
Thanks
Chris

Oops. I just realised I posted this in the wrong section. Can a mod move this up to the late model MBP forums please?
Sorry!

  • Mirrored Display. How to sleep MBP display without closing LID to keep the machine vented?

I just got my hands on a 15" MBP and I currently have a third party Display that I have connected to my Display output port. Mirrored display, and tried the clamshell mode but machine got quite hot by running in it that way. I was wondering if there is any way to keep the lid open while the mirrored mode on the external Display still runs?
Also, if there are any third party software that does give me flexibility as to which display to sleep and such, and at least have control over the display output options, that would be a gem. Appreciate it if anyone has that info?
Thanks a lot for taking time to help! Happy holiday and a great year to come for all!
    Miles of smiles,
    Jimbo

    Captfred,
I've tried what the article suggests but it only seems to work if you want to wake the computer when it is sleeping or the screen saver is on.
What I am trying to find out is how to start the computer when it is turned off without having to open it. I would imagine that there would be some key combination on the keyboard or perhaps a way to program the on/off button on the side of the Apple external display to do that.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks in advance.

  • After waking from sleep, MBP screen shakes

Curious if anybody else has seen this problem. Periodically when my MBP (santa rosa) wakes from sleep, as best I can describe it, the screen shakes. Mostly vertically, I think. It's a behavior that looks like a loose connection, but it's so closely tied with my installation of Leopard, that I suspect it's a software issue.
    Anybody else?

I dont know what exactly you mean by "shaking" but what I just experienced here a few moments ago sounds kinda similar. My MBP, running on battery, went to sleep for two hours and when I woke it up, the screen went nuts. The brightness was irregular throughout the screen and the image started "flashing" intermitently. Think of a poorly-tuned TV channel. Sounded like what you said...a loose connection, except that it is probably not. I had to to a hard reboot. Toughts from anyone?

  • AEBS and AExpress N ethernet bridge disconnects when I sleep MBP??

Hi all this is my first post but im a long time mac user having grown up in a mac house.
anyways im an it guy by profession and ive been working at this issue to no avail so I figured I might come on there and see if any of you have experienced this issue
the issue I get is that when I close/sleep my MBP it disconnects the Airport Express ethernet bridge clients
    NETWORK Info
I run a small business from my home thus I have FiOS (yay 20/20) with a block of 13 static ips that i distribute via DHCP and MAC reservation to allow remote access to my network as well as keep things consistent.
I currently run cat6 from my FiOS ONT to my Airport Extreme Base Station, which i use on a strict N only in 5ghz range as my area is flooded with b/g networks but no n networks (yay again).
I recently acquired an N Airport Express to provide a wireless to ethernet bridge thus extending my network to my entertainment center (ps3 xbox etc)
(extra info: im using n here because i found that b/g limits my internet connection speeds to 7-9 mbps where as my connection is capable of 20. On my n speed network I can get my full bandwidth wirelessly, yes I know there is obviously some bandwidth and throughput loss by going wireless but not as much as a b/g network was giving me)
    NETWORK SETTINGS
On my n network I distribute a range of IP addresses from my static block. I have tried a few different dhcp lease times which definitely improved my initial problem which seemed that it would log me out when the key rotated every 20 min. Currently ive bumped that up to 1 day (i know not as secure id like to set it back to 20min but it seems that when it rotates that it logs me out) and haven't had that specific issue revolving around key rotation again. ive tried the WDS, Extend a network and join a network options with no real difference in behavior when I shut my laptop and for example my GF is playing rock-band online she gets disconnected also worth noting that it seems there is an intermittent DNS issue on the express ie cant find time server even though at that time ethernet clients are able to connect and get dns response
Below is my log from my express base station when the disconnect occurs

  • How to sleep MBP?

Does anyone know how to make the MBP sleep? Mine has never slept, it wakes up after some minutes and stays on all the time with the lid closed.
    What's the secret?

It sounds like you've got something running that's interfering with correct sleep; open Console, click All Messages top left and see what it shows for the latest entries ?

  • Sleeping MBP unresponsive...why?

My MBP works just fine, but my solved question poses another.
I typically let my MBP sleep instead of booting it from scratch every time. Well, recently, I realized that it was getting very difficult to wake up; I'd press any number of keys, but my MB would only revive after around two minutes or longer. Very strange.
I eventually realized that the problem was: I was plugged into a headphone cable. When I left the cable unattached, my MBP revived within seconds. Problem solved.
But the question is: why? The offending headphone cable was about thirty feet long. Is there a limit for a mini cable for the MBP?

  • Really really easy question about sleeping MBP

I have a macbook pro and i am running a program that cannot save for whatever reason, and i want to know if i can close the screen (putting the computer to sleep, i havent changed any defaults), will my program QUIT causing me to loose all of my work, or will it remain "open" and open with my work the next time i open my screen
    thanks
    ben

Your program may quit for other reasons which you have no control over.

  • Mouse & Trackpad cursor not showing up after sleep (MBP)

This is happening more consistently and its getting frustrating. When waking my MacBook Pro from sleep, the cursor doesn't appear. I can tell its moving around, but no cursor is visible. Unplugging and replugging the mouse in doesn't help on either USB port. Force-quiting the finder doesn't work either.
Anyone experiencing this? I searched a bit, but didn't see a similar issue listed, although there seem to be plenty of other waking issues.
    Thanks,
    Matt

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Unfortunately I am at work right now and can't try any of them yet. Here is some more info about my system. I am anxious to get home and try to resolve this issue.
I recently bought this system used. The previous owner stated there were no problems with it. As soon as I received it, I upgraded to 10.5.2, so I don't know if it was doing this before then. I do have an external hard drive attached via FireWire (not USB). The only other things attached to this system is the monitor, keyboard/mouse and a printer.
Any other tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for the insight!

  • How is closed & sleeping MBP supposed to react to pressing Play on Remote?

Hi. I have this question: How is closed and sleeping MacBook Pro supposed to react to pressing Play (or other buttons) on the Remote?
I think that once it started playing music from iTunes even with closed lid, and I was thinking how clever it was. But now it only plays for few seconds and then goes back to sleep. I don't understand this.. it should either keep playing or do nothing.. why this weird behaviour?
    Thanks in advance for replies.
    Regards
    Milan

The machine is intended to sleep whenever its display is closed. I agree with you that logically, it either shouldn't wake up at all when it's closed and called upon by the remote, or it should wake up and stay awake. What it does (and mine does exactly the same thing, so I don't think yours is misbehaving) doesn't make very good sense, and suggests that there's a minor fault in the design — whether hardware or software, I'm not sure.
But for the machine's safety, it's much better for it to go right back to sleep than to stay awake and keep running. If it did the latter, you might be tempted to pick it up and slip it into your carrying case or backpack while it was still running. That would almost certainly cause it to overheat in a very short time, because it would be unable to cool itself in there. So the way it behaves, while not strictly logical, at least errs in favor of self-preservation.

  • MBP with 10.5.1 takes 20 sec to sleep

It wakes up right away but it takes 20 seconds or so to sleep (fans off and light pulsing).
How long does your MBP take to sleep?

See if any of these provide pointers.

  • MBP USB Disconnect Sleep Crash!

    HI,
I thought this was an iPhone issue. If I unplug my iPhone from the sleeping MBP THEN plug it back in, the MBP crashes. If I leave it unplugged no problem EVER. But EVERY TIME I re-plug it will crash. I can work around this.
But today as the MBP was asleep I unplugged a USB cable that was inactive (from a Panasonic LX3 and the camera was already ejected and just the bare cable left plugged in) and got the same result...crash.
What actually happens is a black unresponsive screen that never changes no matter how log I wait. I have to hit the power button and get the forced quit little tone then hit it again a few seconds later and it starts fine wiht the "unexpected" warning.
This never happened till I started to use the iPhone as tethering.I think this started with iOS 4.2.1 so perhaps the update will help but doesn't explain any USB being unplugged causing issues.
Any suggestions for straightening out the usb drivers or what ever?
    Thanks,
    W

I think this is a very old bug... happens on my 2009 MacBook Air also when I unplug any USB while computer is asleep. Haven't tried to do it on the others but might try it on the old al. MacBook.

  • White iMac Intel with 10.4.1 takes 40 seconds to sleep after clicking on it

My dad's machine (after a restart) will take under 3 seconds to go to sleep after the command...but after checking email and unloading camera or some surfing- for some reason it takes almost 40 seconds.
I reduced spotlight's things to check, removed all superfluous fonts, used Activity Monitor to see if anything weird was running, removed Google Desktop....
Nothing helps...not to mention it just generally runs slow. It has plenty of RAM. I just don't get it. I have followed all of the "Tips to optimize speed on the Mac" and no luck.
    Any ideas?

  • I'd like to wake up with blue teeth (DVI to HDMI closed, sleeping Macbook)

    Ok, not really.
What I would like is for the closed, sleeping MacBook Pro I have hooked to the HDMI port of my Visio HD TV via a DVI to HDMI cable to wake up when I tap the spacebar of the bluetooth keyboard I have paired with it. The same Macbook Pro wakes up fine when hooked to a DVI monitor from a closed, sleeping state.
More Info: I've hooked an extra MacBook Pro I have to my TV so I can watch IP TV content. I have a dream of sitting on my couch with a tiny Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and waking up my closed sleeping MBP so I can watch 'It Takes A Thief' but I still have to steal over to the TV stand and... (I know, this is brutal)... OPEN the MacBook Pro before I get a dose of Alexander Mundy.
Why would regular BT wakeup work with a DVI monitor, but not with the DVI to HDMI cable? Is there an adapter I could put outboard that will fool the DVI port into stirring from sweet slumber?

Do you have the MBP plugged into its power adapter? That's the only way it will work with the lid down.

  • Trackpad Jerky or Unresponsive when waking from sleep

I've been having a problem with my trackpad being extremely jerky and unresponsive when it is waking up from sleep. I am a new mac user and I've only had my macbook pro since christmas and this problem is really getting annoying. Twice, I've had to just push the power button and press enter so my notebook would shut down and I could restart. Any Ideas?

First, when waking from sleep, MBP requires a little to get up to speed as it wakes if properly put to sleep. The MBP does hibernate and write to the hard disc when sleeping and this takes some time as does reading back. The book will be viewable immediately on waking but can seem laggard while fully getting up to speed from hibernation. Do not try to wake the computer until the little wake/sleep light has begun pulsing. Two, if you have a usb connection going or an expresscard inserted ... ensure that it lets the computer wake/sleep properly. Before sleeping the 'book, power off the connected items so that they do not interfere with the process.
What connections do you use? and what processes are going when you attempt to sleep the computer?
Use the Activity Monitor and the Console to check what is happening. Both the Console Log and the System Log in the console can provide you with info regarding your problems. Check the logs and post problematic entries here if you cannot interpret them yourself.

  • Cinema Display Sleep Won't Wake on Mouse Move

After the Cinema display sleeps (MBP is still awake), prior to Lion, I would just move the mouse and the display would wake. With Lion, moving the mouse has no effect, and I have to open the MBP to wake the Cinema display.
I use an external monitor, keyboard, and wireless mouse.

I am having the same problem on my MacPro after upgrading to Lion.  I had this problem with Leopard originally, and the solution involved resetting the SMC and resetting PRAM.  However, those tricks did not work with Lion. Once the display goes to sleep, it will not wake up.  The computer itself is fine (configured to never sleep).  I can ssh into for example.  I note that an attempt to reboot with "sudo shutdown -r now" fails to reboot successfully however and I end up having to powercycle in order to recover my displays.  For now, I'm just going to set my "Display sleep" Energy Saver preference to Never to avoid the issue.
For my MacPro: resetting SMC involves:
    a) unplug power for 15 seconds
    b) plug in power and wait 15 seconds
    c) boot
For my MacPro, resetting PRAM involves:
    a) When turning on power, hold down command, option, P, and R keys.  wait for 2nd beep to indicate PRAM is reset, then release keys
