Sleeping PowerBook

I have a PowerBook G3 Wallstreet Edition running MacOS 10.2.8. I have it connected to my main computer, a PC, through a TV tuner card using the S-Video output. however, I cannot close the PowerBook without it going to sleep. Is there any way that I can keep it from going to sleep?
Thanks

Not sure about that, I havn't played with the settings since I am very pleased with the default setting. When the screen goes black it sounds as if the HD settles down, seems whatever standby mode it is renders the machine to a dormant status and it is virtually off and comes back within 2 or 3 seconds when I touch a key. Works for me!

When the Powerbook is woken from sleep mode the airport crashes when using an external display. I don't think the DVD is damaged since it worked fine on my old G4 desktop.
The reason I'm trying to reinstall OS 10.4 is because I have received the computer from a family member with all his files and data in it. I want to get rid of it all and start from scratch for my personal use - if possible. If not, I could settle for less.
I want to explain few issues if that helps. I first tried installing Mac OS 10.3 to my Powerbook running Mac OS 10.4.3. I put OS 10.3 CD, started computer with C key held down, and all that came up was gray screen with 1 inch black line to the left of the Apple logo, and remained there - never making it to the blue screen. I shut of the computer, took the Mac OS 10.3 out of the Powerbook, restarted without the CD, and the computer was back to the desktop.
Then I tried installing 10.4, which goes past the gray screen, and gets stuck in the blue screen. I ejected the 10.4 DVD, and computer was back to normal (to the desktop)
It sounds like you inserted the wrong or a damaged DVD and neither the installation nor erasure took place. In that case, let's get started again on the right foot.
Tell me why you want to erase your hard drive? Were you experiencing some technical issue, and if so what? Let's troubleshoot that situation with the least harmful method.

  • Help with randomly sleeping PowerBook

I have a 15" 1.5 Ghz powerbook that started going to deep sleep at the drop of a dime last week. I've eliminated any software issues (complete re-install of the system) but it still persists. It happens no matter what I'm doing, on or off a network, running multiple applications or no applications... The only thing I can find in the logs is this line "localhost mDNSResponder: Repeated transitions for interface en1 (my IP address); delaying packets by 5 seconds". en1 appears to be Airport.
This happens every time before the system sleeps! Has anyone else come across this and if so have you found a solution.
My machine is now out of warranty but it's not that old (just over 2 yrs).

  • Airport won't work after comes out of sleep- PowerBook 15" Titanium

    Hey everybody,
I've been using my PowerBook G4 for quite a while without any problems. Recently, and I'm not sure exactly what I did before it started happening, every time I close my powerbook and it goes to sleep, the AirPort card no longer works when I open it back up, it just shows grey bars for no signal. I've tried setting up the connection again by entering an SSID when it does this and it just tells me with a generic error that it can't join the network.
It works perfectly if I restart the computer, but without fail stops working again the next time I close it up. I've reset the PRAM and the open firmware and it made no difference. I also have all the latest updates installed. Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this and what the solution would be?
    Thanks

Since no-one else has chimed in...
Back at the end of April Apple released a Security Update (2007-004). They quickly replaced this with 2007-004 v1.1 due to an issue with Airport not reconnecting after sleep, however the issue was supposed to only affect 10.3.9 machines.

  • Bluetooth mouse, keyboard, cinema display + Powerbook?

I'm posting this here because it incorporates displays and peripherals as well as the behavior of the PB when all are plugged in...
I have an ADC 23" cinema display that doesn't get used anywhere near enough. I got a 17" Powerbook about a year ago and since them my G5 sits idle most of the time.
I want to put the display to better use by using it with my powerbook at work. I don't want to run two displays - I'd rather just use the big display.
So my question is... if I buy an apple bluetooth pro keyboard and a third party multi-button bluetooth mouse (any suggestions?) as well as a DVI-ADC converter, can I leave the powerbook in clamshell mode?
I want to be able to bring my sleeping powerbook into work with me, plug in the DVI and ethernet cables and hit the spacebar on the wireless keyboard to wake it up. (can you wake a sleeping mac with a bluetooth keyboard?).
Is this possible? Will this setup work? TIA.

Well, parts of your setup will work, and parts won't. The monitor and adc-dvi combination should work out fine, and from what I understand you can keep the powerbook almost completly closed while you use an external display, but you may what to research it a little more. There are a lot of discussions about this in the monitors section. Now, as far as the bluetooth devices waking up the computer, they can, but only after they have been paired. So you could not just walk in and wake the computer up. You would need to open the laptop up, connect the dvi cable, and turn on the blutooth devices and let them pair to the computer. Then you could close the lid. I think the agrument here is whether you can close it all the way and you can get an anwser to that in the monitors section of the forum. In terms of bluetooth mice, I use and highly reccommend radtech mice. They work very well, however their battery life is short and the travelling version is very small. I would highly reccommend rechargeable batteries. Hope I answered most of your questions. -Justin

  • What is the best OS to run on a PowerBook 12" 1GHz?

My PB has slowed down these days at OS 10.4.7. I'm considering wiping the drive and reinstalling the OS from scratch, but I'm wondering what the optimal OS is for this machine. Where's the sweet spot of features, speed and reliabilty for a 1GHz 12" Powerbook with 768MB RAM?
    Anybody?

Well I'm glad to hear I shouldn't need to go back an OS. I'm going to offer up some info about my sytem though the info will somewhat disorganized as I remember things.
My drive has been full to the brink in the past, but right now I've got abpout 14 gigs free out of 80. Maybe it's fragmented. I didn't think fragmentation was a big issue with OS X. And with OS X I've seen no use for Disk Warrior, Tech Tool, etc., so I have nothing (that I know of) to defragment the drive.
Here's an example, of what I'm talking about. I just opened the sleeping Powerbook (I'm typing this on the good iMac), there are no apps running, yet the HD hasn't stopped accessing itself in 5 minutes. If I open a new window, it takes about 2-3 seconds for the files to show up. I clicked on the Date & Time preference pane and the ball spun for 45 seconds.
I have Font Agent Pro 3, which tends to autoload fonts when I don't want them. I just removed everything from the Login Items, including its autoloader, there was also an MS daemon, a Virex app, and something called 'gee'. So they are all gone now. I have also removed all of the fonts from my User Library, including all of Font Agent's files there, and turned off Aut Activation.
Is there someplace I can turn off the content scan, so that Spotlight does not memorize the contents of every file?
I have Adobe CS1 & CS2 installed, both with their versions of Version Cue in the System Preferences. I just turned them both off.
Also Norton Utilities and Norton Anti-Virus have preference panes even though I deleted the programs long ago. How do I remove their preference panes?
I'm running out of things to say. Any ideas? Or places to start narrowing things down? I'm sure I have a bunch of preference files for all of the random stuff I've installed from Versiontracker over the years, but I didn't think they'd be a problem unless their particular app was running.
What are the most likely culprits for slowing down the Finder and everything else in general? I had Calculate All Sizes checked for the window that opens when open a new finder window. So that's now unchecked for all windows as well.

  • Keyboard randomly stopped working

I just woke my computer from sleep (PowerBook G4, 1.67 GHz) and noticed that the keyboard wasn't responding to anything at all - even the function keys wouldn't work (brightness, volume, etc.). I rebooted, and STILL the keyboard would not respond. At this point I got a little nervous, since now I couldn't log into my account (couldn't type the password).
I then tried shutting the computer off completely and booting it up cold. Now the keyboard appears to be working again. I put the computer to sleep and woke it up, and it's still fine.
This is the first (and so far only) time this has happened. The computer is about 2 and a half years old and I'm running OS X 10.5.1.
Is this indicative of a hardware problem, or just some weird random bug? Does anyone have any experience or insight into this? Thanks very much.

I'm having the same issue. PowerBook G4, 15-inch with Apple bluetooth mouse and Apple bluetooth keyboard. Keyboard and mouse lose their connection to the PowerBook randomly, and freeze. Nothing but a reboot fixes it. Toggling bluetooth on and off doesn't work. This has been going on since the Leopard upgrade.
If I plug a mouse into the USB port it gets the pointer moving and I can initiate the reboot procedure.
A patch was issued to fix this problem on the MacBook and MacBook Pro, but folks (Apple) it's happening on the G4 too!
I don't know if it's a bluetooth issue, something with the keyboard and mouse, or some kind of heartbeat problem within the OS.
I completely wiped the machine and did a fresh install of Leopard to see if it would fix the problem. It did not.

  • Help!  PowerBook G4 crashed on sleep, won't start after forced shutdown.

Urgent call for help: After I downloaded a RealPlayer update today, I neglected to run Disk Utility permissions repair. A little later I left my G4 PowerBook running for a few hours and when I came back and tried to wake it up, it wouldn't come out of sleep mode (white light was pulsing).
I held down the Power button for about 20 seconds but nothing happened, so I removed the battery, which also didn't force a shutdown (white light still on). Finally, after the battery had been out for 5 minutes, I replaced it, plugged the computer in again, and held the Power button down, and it finally shut down (white light went off after about 15 seconds).
I then tried to restart the computer by pressing the Power button, but now nothing at all happens--no chime; it doesn't even go to a gray or blue screen. I've searched Discussions and found a post from "Maxit" suggesting a reboot from the Install disk to someone whose screen went as far as blue and what to do after that to prevent the problem in the future, but since the computer won't draw power, I can't insert the Install disk. (I've copied Maxit's fix below.)
Is there anything I can do to get the computer at least to the point where I can reboot from the Install disk--besides wait until AppleCare and/or my local repairman wakes up on Monday morning? Thanks for any suggestions!
    Maxit's fix:
Posted: Apr 28, 2006 7:17 PM in response to: Jimmcangolf
First thing I would do is to restart from the 10.3 installation Disk and rather than proceeding with the installation, go to the menu bar, find Disk Utility, open it and run "Repair." If errors show up, run again.
Then, I would boot into Safe Mode (which forces a directory repair). See this KB article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107393
This will take longer than a normal restart. Once booted, go into Disk Utility on the drive and repair permissions, then restart. Were this not to resolve your issue, then I would suggest doing an "Archive and Reinstall" of 10.3:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Then update the software to 10.3.9 (be sure to repair permissions after the update).
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   15"

Yes, the sleep light stayed on until I was finally able to force a shutdown by removing the battery for a time, putting it back, and holding down the power button.
You've asked a good question: I don't know why it didn't go black as soon as I took the battery out, or why I had to hold down the power button for almost 30 seconds before it finally did.
Maybe when the battery is drained to 1%--which is what the indicator said when I finally realized what had happened and plugged it back in--its reserves are so low that it doesn't have the wherewithal to turn itself off. Or maybe after 5 hours of hibernation it was cranky when I tried to wake it up. . Do you know why it wouldn't respond as expected as soon as the battery was removed or the power button held down?

  • PowerBook G4 not going to sleep

My PowerBook G4 (1,5 GHz; 12") failed to go to sleep (it did, but only for some seconds). The Bluetooth was also "not available". I cured the issue in this way: I reset the PMU and checked the hard disc using the Disc-repair on the installation-DVD (OS X Leopard). The hard disc did not need any repair, bur the programme did some repair in the authorities. After this I rebooted the PowerBook and now the Bluetooth is back and the PowerBook stays asleep wen put to sleep! Hopefully somebody is helped by this.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Thanks for posting. A PMU reset will often repair things that are power-related. Here's Apple's note on what it covers: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431

  • Powerbook G4 keeps sleeping.

Help! I am having the same sleep issue as many have posted. It started without warning yesterday. Powerbook goes to sleep whether plugged in or not. Can happen 5 minutes after start-up, then repeatedly thereafter.
Checked the console application, searched for overtemp and here is a sample of what I saw:
Aug 30 14:50:19 Surek-Power-Book kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
Aug 30 14:50:21 Surek-Power-Book kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
Aug 30 14:50:49 Surek-Power-Book kernel[0]: Power Management received emergency overtemp signal. Going to sleep.
Obviously I cannot get my work done with it falling asleep every few seconds. What do I do now? It is out of warranty obviously. Is there any other possible cause than a bad trackpad sensor?
I have reset the PRAM, reset the PNU, run disk utility. Any other suggestions?
    Thank you!

I had this same problem and fixed it myself. But i'm a tech so i do this for a living but i'll describe the fix for those who want to attempt it.
My powerbook started randomly going back to sleep about 2 months ago, it would do it at all times, eventually it would even do it when i hit the enter key. I found if I applied pressure to the power button , and top right area of the machine i could cause it to jump to sleep. Many years ago the backlight had stopped working and I figured it must have burned out, that was actually related and this fix brought that function back to my laptop after it disappeared 3 years ago.
I removed the casing on the laptop and you will find directly under the power button a addon board that hold the optical sensor on that side of the machine. This is mounted on a small electronic board which makes contact with the mainboard underneath. There is no snap or screws that actually hold these contacts together and this is the source of your problem ( probably ). Because this board is held against the main board mostly with the pressure of the keyboard casing if it has any wiggle it gets disconnected as you type and shorts out, causing your system to sleep. I cleaned the contacts lightly on this board and the mainboard and added a small piece of fire safe foam on top of it. The idea being that with this extra shim the casing of the laptop will push down that much harder on this piece, removing the wiggle removing the sleeps.
After doing this and returning my laptop to it's assembled state the problem entirely disappeared. And as an added bonus my backlight came back.

  • From sleeping now crashing -powerbook G4

    Hi,
I posted a few days ago about my sleeping/narcoleptic Powerbook G4- started when I was working on many spreadsheets. Now that I've installed the Caffeine app, which doesn't allow my laptop to sleep, it has suddenly crashed and shut down completely- this was when I was watching a video and opening up iphoto at the same time. For the past few days, I have made it a habit to always shut down my computer if I'm away for more than 10 minutes.
Was this caused by the new app or is my Powerbook really dying? Need new hardware? Or is it time to go to the Apple store to get it professionally fixed?
I have now transferred some files and I have 10gb free space. Any advice?

Will the system start up or is it dead? If it will start up, see the steps below. If it's dead, that is when you push the power button nothing happens, see this Apple note: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1367
If you have any external devices connected, disconnect them. If you haven't already reset the PMU, do that: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431 and if you haven't reset the PRAM do that: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
Run the Apple hardware test to see if there is an obvious hardware problem. Find the original OS X disks that came with your system, insert the one that says in small print on the label "AHT Version x.x", and reboot holding the option key down. Choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted choose the extended test. If you have either of the TechTool programs, they do similar testing. Does that show any issues?
While you have your OS X disks out, insert the first one, and reboot holding the C key down. When the menu bar appears, choose the Disk Utility from the utilities menu and repair permissions and repair the internal hard drive. Any messages or did the repair complete normally?
Post back the results and we'll go from there.

  • Alu 12" Powerbook G4, shuts down instead of sleeps

Hey all, recently (the last few days), my powerbook, instead of going to sleep when the battery juice runs out, is shutting down hard (as if you were holding down the power button) when the battery is down in reserve power. It's happening when the battery clock says there are 4-6 minutes left on the battery. When I plug it in and turn it back on, the computer clock has been reset. This has happened 4 times in the last week. Should I try a PMU reset? Is the battery crapping out?
    Thanks!

After doing all the resets (PRAM/VRAM and PMU) and doing a battery calibration, still nothing worked. I'm guessing the life of the battery has been reached. Mine is roughly 3 years old with about 400 cycles on it. That seems to be about the expected life. However, what I have found strange is the abrupt nature in the battery decay. I was getting a good 3 hours from this battery until about a month ago, and then I began to lose roughly 10% capacity a day.
I've installed NewerTech's NuPower battery replacement, and all seems to be well so far. I've had it running for about 2 weeks now with no problems and about 3-4 hours of battery life. Hopefully I will get a couple years out of this before I see any battery craziness again. I will post back if anything goes awry.

  • Help! powerbook won't go to sleep...suffering from insomnia

    Hey all,
recently i noticed my powerbook has not been going to sleep. i've reset pram, nvram, open firmware, repaired disk permissions, ran cron scripts the whole 9 yards. I checked system logs and i get this:
    Description: System events log

it seems the powerbook does try to go to sleep but Tiger won't allow it, anyone know whats going on?. Any help is appreciated, thanx in advance

Well, if you are sure its a warranty issue they will not charge you once the issue is resolved. But from what you have said it seems to be software related. I am at a loss what to suggest (sorry). The only last thing I'd say to check is the following:
    1) Make sure your folder actions are off in the Finder. Control click on desktop and the menu should read "Enable Folder Actions." If it says Disable I'd say try it.
    2) Try logging into a new "clean" new user account (after logging out of yours) and see if the machine will sleep then. If it does look at the StartUp items for your user.
