Sleeping, whats really goin on?

Hi All,
I have a PDA which Syncs and charges via USB.
Sleep-wise I dont have many problems (except one regarding external display but that is another post).
My question in this case is this: When I shut the lid on my MBP the sleep indicator starts breathing pretty much straight away, but the connected PDA still continues to charge, thus drawing power from the MBP. This actually isnt a bad thing, but Im just curious if its normal? Shouldnt the power be cut from the USB while the device is in sleep? I'm not complaining about it as I prefer this behaviour, I just want to make sure my MBP is asleep.
The more bizarre thing, is when I unplug the PDA while the MBP is asleep and its lid is shut, the 'PDA Disconnected' sound plays through its speakers! The sleep indicator briefly pauses, then starts breathing again. So I'm guessing when I unplug the PDA the MBP wakes up, makes the sound, then goes back to sleep again. But what puzzles me is, is the sync software actually running during the sleep? checking for communication with the PDA? Is it possible to disable this? SO connecting/disconnecting USB while the lid is shut does not wake it up?

If you are still hearing notification sounds, then your computer is not sleeping. The light on the front next to the opening button should be pulsing bright and dim (sort of like breathing deeply) if it is sleeping. There are a number of cases where the MBP does not sleep when you close the lid. That is actually why I was looking around in the discussions here.
See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4075416#4075416 for one discussion about problems of MBP not sleeping when you close the lid. It can be quite a problem if you close the lid and put the MBP in a bag if it is not sleeping as it can get very hot and run down the battery.

This is a user forum; you aren't talking to Apple here. On the iPad 4 graphics support is integrated into the A6X processor. According to the article below the A6X uses quad-core graphics utilizing SGX554MP4.

  • My mac won't wake up from sleep, what can i do

My mac won't wake up from sleep, what can i do

Can you say more about thermal cut-off?  My mac has beene having problems waking from sleep and I have noticed that I hear the fan running ever so slightly in the background.  When I depress the power button for a second the fan shuts off.
Just open the side an dlook to see which fan it is.  The lower fands are easy to see as well as the video card fan.
When you push the power button and that fan goes off is the machine now fully off?  No power light?  No fans spinning?   Now drives spinning?
I don't recall what I did when my machine shut off with the one exhaust fan running.  I think the obvious thing I would have tried would have been to push power button for 10 seconds to shut it down fully.  That or actually pull the plug.
When this happens the only way to use my Mac is to restart via the power button.
Then I guess that answers the first question.  It must have turned off since pushing the power button again was the normal reboot.
I can't find any helpful info on thermal cut-off so I was wondering if you could explain what it is, what causes it, and more importantly what I can do to fix it?
That was my term for it.  What else could it be?  Without its fan video card would get extremely hot and throw off all that heat.  Whats the point of having temperature sensors in so many places other than to use that info to protect the machine against damage due to overheating?  So my assumption was card gets hot, sensor (probably the pci slot 1 temperature sensor) senses it, kills the machine.  It's also seems logical to me that the circuit(s) handling temperature overloads would want to keep a exhaust fan running to dump the heat out of the machine to further protect any damage from the heat.

  • What really is a wrapper object?

    Hi all,
What really is a wrapper object? Can't seem to find a definition that is easily understood.
    Thanks

    Good Day Friend!
Let me explain you what is wrapper object
java uses primitive types such as int and char for performance reasons. these data types are not part of the object hierarchy. They are passed by value to methods and cannot be directly passed by reference. Also, there is no way for two methods to refer to the same instance of an int. At times, we need to create an object representation for one of these primitive types. For eg, there are collection of these classes, that deal only with objects; to store a primitive type in one of these classes, we need to wrap the primitive type in a class. To address this need, Java provides classes that correspond to each of the primitive types. In essence, these classes encapsulate or wrap the primitive types with in a class. Thus they are commonly referred to as type wrappers.

  • For the average person what really is the point of the activity monitor app when all you really want to know is whether your mac is running at its best?

I have had my imac for nearly 18 months now,
It's okay, is the best I can say about it.
    It cost me around £800+
So recently (and foolishly!) I downloaded OS Mavericks when I was actually looking for a freebie word processor programme (I got Bean because it's simple like me.)
Now the point of all this is that Mavericks has new features like a redesigned Safari (But I ain't noticed any difference yet) and Imaps (Huh!) and Ibooks and Imovie or something.
So when you are oldish like me, you really don't want people to keep changing and introducing new stuff (most of which is pointless anyway) all the time; because it takes us old ***** a while to get used to the last "improvement."
So you try and get rid of all these new apps that you don't want and didn't ask for anyway,
and then you find out you can't, because they're an integral part of the new OS.
    Brilliant!
Then you find that Mail has to redo itself and this thing no longer works properly etc. and you start wishing you hadn't got up that morning...
So you try and get it all back the way it was..
    And you can't.
Because you don't have an external hard drive to use the Time machine back up facility.
So you get in touch with Apple Support and it's now nearly bedtime, but at least you feel like you might be gettin' somewhere.
You talk to the supportguy and suddenly you can't remember what the problem is and what your name is, and you're thinking you might as well order in a pizza seein' as you've drunk the last of the gin..."
Anyway the guy manages to keep his temper and you get some degree of order restored but the machine still seems "jumpy" so someone says to you
"Check out the Activity Monitor! That'll tell you if something's not working right."
So you do, but it doesn't.
Just a bunch of numbers and CPU stuff and User Idiot Input etc.
All you really want is some little box to pop up and say,
"Hey! yyyou've really ssscrewed things upppp-p here, old mmmmman!!. This programme is no longer functioning properly, that thing appears to frozen, and you just wiped half your saved photos of Aunt Jessie's 94th birthday celebration (the one's where she had her eyes open)..
Press here for a full maintenance overview and repair menu.."
By this time you are on the floor, your leg's got cramp and you really really need a pee.
But there ain't no maintenance programme, just an activity monitor app you can't make any sense out of, so you yank the **** power cord out of the socket and go to bed..
    So you try and

  • What really is an ADFContext?

I am using the ADFContext to get/put some session variables.
I spent one whole day behind a problem I have in some circumstances. Apparently, even for session variables, there might be different Contexts according to which point you call ADFContext from. For example, if I put one session variable from within one isolated/nested taskflow, I can get it back (not null) only if I call the getter from any point within the same Tab of the UIShell the nested taskflow is in; on the contrary I get a null if whenever I try to get the session variable from within a different point in another UIShell Tab.
    My question are:
    1. What distinguishes one ADFContext from another ADFContext?
    2. How can I really share session variables redardless the current ADFContext?

  • My smart cover is scratching my screen and will not put my ipad to sleep what should I do?

Ever since I got my IPad the smart cover half the time does not put the Ipad to sleep. Also, the cover is scratching my screen. This smart cover is really causing me to regret my decision to sell my IPad 1 and get the second generation IPad. Also, Safari is and some of the other apps are constantly crashing, I am getting really frustrated where should I go from here the apple store has not been much of a help?
    P.S.
I hope that this is not like the first generation Apple TV I bought which has never worked correctly (waste of 220 dollars).

What's the problem of my ipad?

Have you tried a reset to see if that will start the iPad?
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • What really does "Licensee must use the installers as-is without modification" mean?

In our organization we need to deploy Flash Player via Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager to hundreds of computers.  Along with the standalone installers for distribution in this manner, Adobe has terms here - http://www.adobe.com/products/players/flash-player-distribution.html prohibiting modification of the installers.  But what does this really mean?  For example, we can create a transform for the .MSI file, which is a separate file that has settings that are applied by msiexec at the time of installation.  Is this considered "modification" by Adobe?  We need to disable auto-updating as the end users of these computers are not local admins and so they get useless and annoying update messages and UAC prompts.

rSAP has largely been supplanted by ABAP, which the iPhone supports. Most modern smartphones, including the iPhone do NOT store any information on the SIM.
SMS inboxes. Not much to say. I've never had a desire to do this. I understand it could be useful, but it's unlikely to change.
As for meetings on the home screen... Wait for iOS 5
Flash: it's not JUST that Steve doesn't like flash. Adobe has failed to produce a workable version of Flash for iOS. Blame has to go to both sides.  I say good riddance to it.

  • Sleep vs No Sleep-What's you choice & why?

How many choose to sleep thier Mac Pro and are there any issues. If so what?
(Please explain your set up. Example: Never sleep but do use screen saver and this works great. Or always used to sleep but it caused a lot of problems like...)

Mine runs all day with the display set to "sleep" after 20 min. At night I manually put the computer to sleep. I used to have it set to auto sleep after 20 min but, depending on what I had connected, the auto sleep was erratic and I got tired of having to plug and unplug my scanner or my card reader or whatever and never knowing for sure that the computer would sleep. The Mac Pro is quiet enough that it is not a problem to just leave it on.

  • What REALLY happened with the iPhone 4S 64gb?

Like everyone else I feel completely let down that I didn't get my phone on launch day, but unlike everyone else (according to most of the posts I saw) I just really NEED to know JUST WHAT HAPPENED?
My store (in SE Wisconsin) seems to harbor a bunch of great people as employees and I'm not going to bash them, rather I would just appreciate some education to their employees by corporate. ALL I WANT TO KNOW IS WHY DIDN'T THE BEST BUY STORES GET THE IPHONE 4S 64GB ALONG WITH ALL OF THE REST OF THE IPHONE 4S'S.
This seems to be the situation across the country and there are a ton of people extremely unhappy. All we are getting from the front lines (ie the employees) is that the Apple distributors didn't send them? Really? There's no information anywhere about why Best Buy didn't get the phone.
I believe that if we, the customers, got the information about why we didn't get our phones on the launch day, a lot of people would be less unhappy. Also an estimated time as to when we will finally get them would be much appreciated. (Maybe trying to remedy this in the future would be a good idea too)
    To sum it up:
    1. Why didn't Best Buy get the iPhone 4s 64gb with all of the other iPhones
    2. Please let us know what occurred to make this happen
    3. Please let us know when we will get our phones, or at least when Best Buy will
    4. Apologize
    5. Don't let this happen again!!!

i live in sterling heights MI and have experienced similar problems.
i ordered a black 64g (at&t) iphone 4s for myself and a white 32g (at&t) iphone 4s for my wife.  i arrived at the store 10 minutes after the store opened on the friday to pre-order.  i was informed that there weren't many people before me who had pre-ordered through any carriers.  the sales person who helped me said NOTHING about any type of snafu.  he even told me stories on how they overstaffed the store (utica MI) for the verizon release and that they sold less the 10 iphone 4's on release day.  he took my order and while taking it, the store manager (who the sales person advised me who had called) called him while he was helping me and informed him that the orders were to be filled in order received.  wham, bam i'm out of the store as happy as can be expecting to get my hands on the phone that will make my wife a little happy camper.  ok, i was pretty excited too.  well, on thursday oct 13th i get a call from "sam" from best buy around 8 pm and he tells me that my phone won't be there and they'll 'probably' get another shipment later in the day.  so instantly my blood begins to boil because i'm thinking to myself.......1.  i only went to best buy for the $50 gift card per iphone  2  if i knew that there would be ANY issue with me possibly not getting the phone i would've just ordered from at&t or the apple store.  3  i too have spent oogles of $$$$$ at best buy and have come to expect better.  finally 4th of all the way there was NO explination on WHY they didn't get either order just angered me further.  since my wife has called every day and has received 3 different excuses over the four days she has called (since thur night)
i work with a lot of people who depend on cell phones and BELIEVE me.....each one will know about best buy selling items under the assumption i would've had it on launch day, and they can't even provide the item or a reason why they're not there.
whoever is in charge of the store/region/company should probably know how passionate people are with their iphone/apple products and shouldn't have led us on to believe that we would have one on lanuch day.  it's just bad business!  here i'm gonna take all these pre-orders and i have NO clue how many.....or even what we're going to get.
finally i'm in the catch 22......do i cancel the order and lose my place in line with the possibility of getting it any day here (that's a liberal use of the phrase any day.....probably 2 weeks)  or do i cancel the order and go with the surefire at$t or apple and KNOW what i'm getting it?
from here forth best buy can $#&$ off with their pre-orders and products.....i'll go somewhere else.

  • To shut down or to sleep, what`s better?

what`s better to put it to sleep or shut it down?

    Sleeping
Many computer users almost NEVER shut down their computers. There are many positive benefits to this (especially if you're a Mac user). When a Mac goes to sleep, almost every component inside the computer is turned off; what is not turned off is set in a 'low-power mode'. The contents of the RAM and Video RAM are saved, the network ports might still get a little power, and a few other subsystems stay on, but pretty much everything else is off.
On a laptop, this mode uses VERY little battery power - if you're going to use your laptop again within a day or so without the power adaptor plugged in, this could actually save battery power, as shutting down/starting up uses a lot more energy (much more disk access, processor power, etc.). On a desktop, this could save a little energy (thus a few $$$), especially if you put it to sleep a few times a day when you know you won't be using it.
The best advantage to sleeping is that the computer (a) goes to sleep almost immediately, allowing quick transport of a laptop, and no vigilance after clicking 'Shut Down...' on a desktop, and (b) wakes up almost immediately, allowing you to get to work right away.
    Shutting Down
Shutting down a computer has a few benefits as well. One is that NO power is being used at all - for laptops, it's best to shut it down if you're not going to use it for a day or two, as it will save a little bit of energy and heat from being wasted in your laptop. On a desktop, you might wish to shut down so that you can transport it, or if you won't use it for a long while.
Also, shutting down completely wipes away the computer's RAM (random access memory), which might have some corrupt/junk data left in it from various things the computer does. It also lets the computer's components cool down. I definitely recommend shutting down at least once a month or so.
However, when you shut down and start up your computer, the hard drive and other components get more wear and tear, and use more energy.
    The Verdict
I recommend all Mac users to sleep their computers unless they won't be used for more than a day or two, and all Mac users should shut down their computers at least once a month to clean out all the gibbledygook that collects inside the components.

  • Sometimes my phone does not make its usual noise when I wake it or put it to sleep what should I do?

When I wake the iphone 4 up it makes the wake up click noise and then other times it doesn't and then when I touch the button to make it go to sleep it makes the turn off click noise and then other times it doesn't - how do I fix this? as it's only been doing it for the last 3 weeks or so and nothings happened to the phone so I have no idea whats going on.....

How long have you had your phone? Because if you've had it a long time, the battery in the phone might of died on you. Or have you dropped it in water, snow, from high up? All those things could of disconnected something internally in your phone, or permentaly damaged the internal hard drive its self, or the sims card.

  • New Macbook air screen won't wake up after going to sleep - what's this?

When watching a movie on Netflix, for example, since I'm not touching the keyboard, the computer goes to sleep - sort of.  The screen fades briefly and if I fail to notice quickly enough to touch a key, the screen goes black.  The sound continues, however, and the keyboard is lit.  I can't wake the screen back up.  I have to restart it.
I've had the computer for less than a week.
What's going on - is my new MacBook Air defective or is there something I can do to stop this annoying glitch from occurring?

There is no need to diagnose such an issue, you just bought it and paid for service and 14 day exchange.
Return it for another unit, others here will concur on that fact.
