Sleepless in Ottawa

Every few days my Macbook gets into a state where it will not go to sleep or shut down. Doesn't matter how I try to put it to sleep (apple menu, brief press of power button, or close the lid). It just keeps running though if I close the lid it does turn off the backlight.
When it is in that state it also will not shut down. It gets to a plain blue screen with the little line that circles once per second, and stays there forever (well at least for an hour). The only way out is to press and hold the power button to force power down. At least it always boots cleanly afterward, so it must have been nearly shut down.
To me, this looks as if some process is stuck in a tight loop waiting for an event that never happens, and doesn't see the shutdown request. I've tried killing many non-critical processes once it becomes sleepless, in the hope of getting the culprit, but no luck. Must be a low level system thread.
Back when I was running 10.4.8, I found a way to trigger this state reproducibly. All I had to do was put my Mac to sleep while using my Bluetooth mighty mouse, then wake it up with the mouse out of range. It would wake up fine, and work normally, but from then on it would not go to sleep again. By always turning off the mouse before closing the lid, I was able to run for many days without seeing this problem.
That may be a clue, but it is no longer a reliable trigger in 10.4.10 (and yes, I've installed v1.1 combo updater). I am still getting a sleepless state once in a while, but don't know yet what triggers it. Possibly there is some connection with using the Mighty Mouse while running Parallels.
1. Is anyone else having problems with an Intel Mac that won't sleep?
2. If so, have you found any way to trigger the problem reproducibly?
3. Any solution?

Thanks for the suggestions.
All I have to do to get back to normal is reboot (after a forced power down, of course, since restart never completes), and for hours or even days the Macbook will sleep and shutdown normally. Then suddenly some unknown trigger puts it into a sleepless state.
I did try all the resetting and pref trashing options months ago, and they made no difference. I may do it again; it can't do much harm. But that's more likely to help a Mac that will NEVER go to sleep or shut down. I'm 90% sure that this is a software issue related to some low level kernel thread that is not terminating normally because of a deadlock or a faulty check for some expected external event.

  • Using sleepless with macbook

so is there anyone out there that can vouch for using sleepless all the time with the display closed? i am just too paranoid to let the display be closed cause i dont want anything to happen to the screen. just wondering what some of your thoughts on this are, thanks!

well, i think that is pointless...i mean, it is fine to have the display closed, but you should at least put the MB to sleep (in fact it only takes 2 seconds : press Command-Option-Eject for 2 seconds and the MB is asleep)

  • Can't get rid of items that are making hard drive sleepless

I have an Intel iMac with a dead internal drive. I'm now booting and running it off its backup clone drive, an external La Cie Firewire drive. But the drive is constantly cycling, spinning down and spinning up, even when all apps are closed and the iMac seems (and should be) asleep (if the internal drive was doing this and i couldn't hear it, no wonder it died).
I looked in Activity Monitor to see what it's up to when it's supposed to be asleep, and see some repeated entries from outdated stuff- Lexmark Network Services (from a printer i no longer have) and Palm Desktop Background, from a Palm program i haven't used since 2006 and thought was de-installed.
The thing is, i can't seem to get rid of them. It's difficult to pinpoint their exact source thru Spotlight (or Inspect in Activity Monitor), and when i throw what i can trace of them in the trash, i can't empty it, i get a message that says "USB Transport rsrc is in use".
How can i get rid of these items, which are obsolete and might be what is keeping the drive cycling?
I removed a bunch of unneeded items from Login Items, but Lexmark one isn't there. And what is "Transport Monitor" (shows in both Startup Items and Activity Monitor)? Can i delete it from Login items?
Energy Saver settings seem fine- it's set to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity. It's just not going inactive.
    Suggestions?
I'm having to shut the iMac down whenever i walk away from it to keep from hearing all that cycling from the drive (and wondering what it's doing to the drive).

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode, like if it still changes in 5-10 minutes...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it maybe some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. It also may be Video Card or Airport going bad.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
Transport Monitor & Palm Desktop are related...

  • Why is time-critical thread not interrupting sleepless high priority thread?

    Hello,
I have two threads running in the same execution system on a real-time PXI platform. The time-critical thread sleeps using "AI Single Scan.VI", and acquires my data at a rate of 8000 Hz.
I have a slower high priority process that calls a DLL function to calculate some filter coefficients. This function call takes longer than 1/8000 s to complete, and runs in a loop, executing as often as it can (with new data from FIFOs).
I expected the time-critical thread to interrupt the the high priority thread without problem.
I am finding that unless I insert a LabVIEW delay (for example a wait for x ms VI) in the loop, the real-time system stops responding. With a small delay (ie 1 ms), t
he acquisition completes, and a FIFO shuts down the loop of the slow process.
Why do I need a labVIEW delay in the high-priority loop, when the DLL function call itself is quite slow? Even without a DLL call, I would expect the time-critical VI to interrupt, finish its data acquisition, and shut-down the high-priority thread using its FIFO.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Frenk

Here are a couple things to try/check:
    1) Check the call library node in your high priority VI. If it's orange (runs in UI thread), your high priority VI is actually switching to the UI thread every time your dll runs. That alone is not a problem. But if your TC VI tries to update any control terminals, the TC thread will switch over to the UI thread to access UI resources, possibly while the dll within your high priority VI has a lock on those resources. Why does the dll have a lock on UI resources? Because it was running in the UI thread and got interrupted by the TC thread before it finished doing its business. Not likely, but possible.
    2) There's another possible reason you're seeing this behavior. If the TC VI and the high VI call a mutual subVI, the subVI will be elevated to ALWAYS run in the highest priority thread irrespective of the actual caller (in your case, it's the the TC thread). Even when the *high priority VI* calls the mutual subVI, that subVI runs in the time-critical thread, which means there's a thread switch from high to TC, then back to high after the subVI finishes. And because high and TC VIs are in the same exec system, that mutual subVI will always run in the 1 and only TC thread alotted to that exec system.
So, while your TC VI is running, you're in the TC thread. While, your high VI is running, you're in a high non-TC thread, and when your high VI calls the mutual subVI, you're again in the TC thread until the subVI finishes.
So how could this arrangement cause your TC VI to become starved by the high VI? If your TC VI wakes up while the high VI is in the middle of running the mutual subVI, the TC thread responsible for running the TC VI is actually busy (in the middle of running the subVI in your high VI!!!), so the TC thread cannot run your TC VI until it finishes running that mutual subVI.
The fix: make your TC VI run in a different exec system. It will be given its own TC thread that no one else can mess with. When TC VI wakes up, it's guaranteed a TC thread.
I think there's a good reason behind why a mutual subVI ALWAYs runs at the highest priority of all its callers, irrespective of the actual caller's priority...but I can't think of the reason at the moment.

  • Express, Airport Utility and sleepless nights

Hi, Don't know if anyone can help my recent sleep patters   I am running Windows Vista on my PC albeit everything else in the house is Apple.  Including MacBook Pro, ipads and iphones... amongst others
I have a Thompson TG582n modem router which is connected via Ethernet to the WAN port of my recently purchased Extreme A1408.  I have configured using Airport Utility 5.5.3 for Windows and eventually created a wireless network... 'Appleb58c63'.... I have checked the 'extend this network' and all good so far. The signal is good, but only as good as the Thompson modem router.  So to 'extend' the signal I have purchased an Express A1264.  I have followed every thread on this forum in attempt for the AU to recoginse the AX... I have even balanced on my head with one arm out of the window
Bottom line is it will not recognise the AX 'wirelessly'... If I connect via Ethernet then I do get recognition & I have tried to configure it via Ethernet and then go wireless but alas....... I am usually a stoic person but I have to say I am beaten on this....
Any help on the AX would be most appreciated... the sleep I will sort out.
    Thanks

The plot thickens.... are you ready for this one!  I checked for wifi on my BB and sure enough the Express showed up.... still doesn't appear in A Utility on the PC though.  Then I checked on my Mac Book and...... well it self configured, recognised the Base Station Extreme and then also found the Express and configured itself!!! However, I go back to Utility on the PC and still it doesn't recognise the Express??
On my Mac Book it is showing Modem, Extreme & Express are all now connected to the 'Apple Network b58b63'.  I have placed Extreme at the far end of the house and the Mac Book still recognises it but when stood in front of it with the Blackberry the signal for the wifi Network drops low.... yet the Mac Book & Ipads are all good signal... Ah well...
My intention when buying the Express was to 'extend' the signal, as when in various parts of the house the signal is weak and FaceTime etc. sometimes drop out.
I'm not sure if I've done that... have I?
