SLi nVIDIA 4 k8N PLatinum Problem

I just got the motherboard in question but it is not picking up my hdd, its a Seagate st340810 and it is pluged into IDE 1 MAster, ive auto detected the slot in the bios but still no joy, i have been told i need to install the SATA drivers, but how do i do this if i cant boot up? Thanks in advance for the help.

Is drive sata or ide? They are two different drives and connectors.  The serial ata
drive wire is extremely thin and can only be plugged in one way.  In any event,
recheck all cable connections to make sure they are firmly seated.  Ide drives need to be aligned
with the cable correctly and its pins.  Look for any color on one side of the cable.  Usually
color stripe goes to pin one.  Most drives auto configured themselves.  Last, remove connections to
any CD drives or DVD drives before troubleshooting your hard drive.

Their is a review over at Xbitlabs on the Diamond board. Xbitlabs - Diamond Review
It states that the K8N Platinum SLI board is actually using the nForce4 Ultra chipset?? and not the nForce4 SLI chipset?
MSI’s product range also includes an analogous mainboard called K8N SLI Platinum which is a little bit less expensive than the K8N Diamond, is based on the nForce4 Ultra and, accordingly, doesn’t support the SLI mode. So, one of the PCI Express x16 slots of the K8N SLI Platinum works as PCI Express x2 on the logical level. Otherwise the two mainboard models are identical.
Yet the specs on MSI's web site definatly state it is using the nForce4 SLI chipset.
    K8N Platinum SLI
Can someone from MSI clear this up, is it the SLI or Ultra chipset and is it capable of 8x/8x and not 16x/2x as Xbitlabs have stated.

XBit got it wrong.  MSI Taiwan first listed these boards, (three of them) named K8N SLI Platinum, K8N Diamond, and K8N Neo 4 Platinum.  Both the SLI Platinum and the K8N Diamond use the NF4 SLI chip.
The confussion begins when MSI USA renames the K8N SLI Platinum to K8N Neo 4 Platinum SLI.  These are the same boards.  Both the K8N Diamond & K8N SLI Platinum//NEO 4 Platinum SLI use the same  NF4 SLI chip.  Only the K8N Neo 4 Platinum uses the Ultra chip.
I've looked at the Diamond specs and the actuall board the US has, (K8N Neo 4 Platinum SLI) and they are identical.  Same amount of sata ports, same amount of onboard lan ports.   The only difference between these two boards was A)where they are being marketed, & B)The Diamond was to include the BT & WiFi, plus the piece of plastic for the Diamond Club.
These are actual .jpg's of the actual boards.

The Ultra listing is also wrong in both countries, it is actually shipping with two onboard lan connections, four nv sata connectors, four silicon image sata connectors.  Link to Ultra Pic

  • Sound problems K8N Platinum Sli neo4

    My system:
    K8N Platinum Sli Neo4
    Asus Nvidia 6800TD
    AMD64 FX-55 (not overclocked) 2.6Ghz
    2 x 512 Corsair 3200XLPT
    Hiper Type-R series 480W PSU
    Creative Labs 7.1 T7900 speakers
    2 x SATA 80Gb Hitachi HGST 7200rpm / 8Mb
I didnt have the problem at the beggining (Had the system 2 weeks, and its been ongoing for a week or so.) but it seems to start after getting into windows... every few minutes "SHHHHHH" then it gets more often, then its just NON stop and a reboot doesnt clear it, nor does turning off/on the power for the speakers. You can faintly still hear the others sounds of games/music, but that much noise over the top is silly. I read here about the power supply problems. Not having a -5v and maybe not enough Amps, but i dont want to jump the boat and replace my PSU, seeing as i do get sound anyway, so maybe its not the problem. I see in the PSU manual, it quotes about pin 7 and 20 being -5VDC. I take it thats the ones i need? and on the +12V1 18A, so thats too low Amp wise, could be the prob? (dunno what the VDC and V1 is about). Also it seems to be the LEFT and RIGHT speakers mainly... the green lead. Soon as i take that out, the "SHHHHHH" stops, except for a few occasions on the remaining speakers. One last thing, ive not been able to get sound from the Middle right or left speakers, except when i change to 5.1 in the settings and flip the 5.1 convert to 7.1 switch on the Amplifier, and it makes the side speakers the rear ones, lol.
It doesnt seems to be a problem with my speakers, because i can plug any headphones/speakers in that green socket and "SHHHHH" again. Im out of ideas, so anyone else know about a solution???

    Hi Jamesfle,
if you want the onboard sound to work properly & you feel your psu is under amped &  especially if you purchased both mobo & psu from same supplier (you can argue incompatability). i'd try to rma the PSU At worse you may have a restocking fee but at least you'll have something that works properly with
Alternatively but possibly with a longer lead time follow Wonkanoby's suggestion to return the mobo for MSI to supply a non -5v board.

  • K8n sli platinum problems

I have a small problem. That plastic thing that was keeping the sli/non sli board at it's place broke and now the stupid sli/non sli board just keep getting out. I've removed it from the pc and the pc is working. My question is... does this affect my Video card in any way? Or the mainboard? Can i keep my motherboard without that sli/non sli board? I have no intentions in using 2 video cards so i am only troubled if the motherboard can work fine without that board.
P.S Sorry for my bad english...i hope u understood what i wanted to say.

Well, after i removed the sli/non sli board i had some problems with my LAN.
Syar thnx for the tip. I didn't know it uses only 8x.
try to get one from Flamingo. afaik they are the authorized MSI distributors in Romania. btw, you can get one from a K8N SLi Diamond, it is the same.

  • Problem with K8N Platinum Plus

    Greetings all,
I am an veteran builder and am having a strange behavior that I need some help with.  Here is some background on parts:
    MSI K8N Platinum Plus
    2 x 1GB OCZ PC-3200 (OCZ4002048ELDCPE-K)
    600W OCZ supply
    X2 4400+
    (2) eVGA 7900GT's
(I can give more specs if necessary)
    Problem:
The board posts and I can interate just fine up until the OS boots...  I just partition copied my previous Windows XP SP2 installation from my old HDD to the new one.  I knew that XP would rescan hardware and I had a 50/50 chance of not having to reinstall.  Each time I boot the box and let XP load it gets to the "starting up" and does nothing... goes no where, yet the keyboard is not locked up (CAPS lock turns on and off still).  I left it running for about an hour, just hoping... nope.  Ok, so fresh install, whatever... XP disc starts up and just as it goes to flip over to start the installer the monitor goes black!  Nothing, CDROM spins down and nothing EVER happens.  I tried flashing the beta (NOT what I would normally do) bios, but nothing changed.  I tried other memory, no change.  I pulled one of my video cards (no more SLI), no change... pulled the sound card, no change... Wierdest thing is that is both cases (booting old XP and trying to install new) the machine is not locked up.
    Ideas?

    Jason,
There are people that do not like multiple RAILs on PSUs for supplying high power systems. Personally I think that a high end Power Supply with multiple RAILs will work but the lower end PSUs with multiple RAILs will not supply the needed juice.
Multiple RAIL PSUs are a new technology and with all new technologies there are going to be teething problems. It is to be expected.
I was trying to figure out why your old comp stopped working too.
On the new comp, lets try Bare Bones for the install of your OS. I would like CPU with heatsink/fan, 1 Vid Card, 1 stick of RAM at 3.4.4.8 Timing with the Voltage bumped up one notch, 1 HD and if you are using RAID 0 - then 1 Array, 1 Optical Drive, no PCI Cards, Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor. Lets see how far you get though a fresh install.
    Take Care,
    Richard
I will try this tonight... last night I tried something VERY close to what you are suggesting, the only difference is that I am not sure that I used 3.4.4.8 on timings... I just used whatever the default timings on the DIMMs are, which should be 2.3.2.5.  I only have one HDD, 1 Video card, DVDRW, floppy, CPU, memory (1 green, 1 purple -- is this right?) and that did not work either with DVI connect or using VGA through DVI adapter.  I did see that someone else was having some Video cracking using a DVI connector... wondering if mine is somehow related to that problem... although, I get NO video (past POST) and he does.
As far as the multi-rail thing... well, if the PSU is on the "A" list of DFI's and nVidia gives it a "SLi certified" then I would think that it would be just fine.  Is my power supply fine or not?

  • Major problems with 64-bit on the K8N Platinum with CD-ROMs

Ok i'm convinced at this point that the MSI K8N Platinum has some real problems with XP period not just SP2....with CD-ROM's or the IDE channel.
I have FDISK my PC like 3 times now.  And re-installed XP several times....
I originally used the MSI NForce drivers but I would subsequently install the NVIDIA unified drivers version 5.10 on my PC.  Now as soon as I did this the CD-ROM's are dead.  So I un-installed the NForce 2.5 ATA /IDE drives and then installed the Microsoft IDE channel drives.  no more blue screens but...the CDRW does not work and I can't load half my CD-ROMS without a corruption failure occuring during installation.
Any ideas?  I'm ready to get a new MOBO....and not not talking MSI or NVIDIA at this point.
    Eric

I have had the same sort of problems as you.Slow boot up at start up and one of my cd drives not being recognized by windows(It always would show up in the bios).
One thing that I tried that reduces this problem from 1 out of 2 boot ups to maybe 1 in 10 boots was to not allow the bios to decide which dma mode the drive opperated in.
Get into your device manager screen and find your ide ata/atapi controllers
open it up and right click the parallel ATA controller.Select properties and tab through primary channel and secondary channels.
uncheck"Let BIOS select transfer mode" for all your drives or just the drives giving you problems.
    Hope this helps

    First post, whoo hooo
So what version of BIOS are u running?  I recently installed the two newest versions 2.0 and 2.1, and they both give me problems.  With the latest (2.1) I'm getting the same error as you.  Returning back to previous BIOS fixed my problems.  Oh yeah, my RAM is Kingston Hyper-X, so i don't think thats your problem.
Let me know if you fix it, thats why im here, .

  • Enable SLI mode on K8N SLI Platinum

Hello, I got an older AMD64 3500+ CPU on a MSI K8N Platinum SLI motherboard, model 7100 (with a flip-board SLI switch), 2x512Mb DDR400 Corsair XMS512C2 memory, a Soundblaster Live! 4.1 soundcard on a PCI slot and two GeForce 7950 GT 512Mb DDR3 PCI-E cards. Power is supplied by a Corsair HX620 620W with separate power cables to each card. No signs of instability on the system whatsoever (no overclocking applied). Built-in sound card, Firewire, RAID and other integrated peripherals disabled in BIOS.
I recently got the second GFX card from a friend, and they are likely not from the same manufacturer. I have installed both cards, flipped the SLI board to "SLI mode", installed the SLI bridge that came with the motherboard, yet I can't get SLI to fire up. Both cards have exactly the same BIOS revision and exactly the same clock speed (core and memory) when checked with the ESA tools from Nvidia.
I have reinstalled the newest Nforce4 and Geforce drivers, but to no avail. Both cards are installed and enabled in Windows XP (32bit SP3), but I don't get any options for SLI in the control panel, and I don't see any performance difference in-game. I have looked in the BIOS for SLI-enable-settings but found none.
Is there anything else I can do to enable SLI mode for the system? Or are the cards simply incompatible? Reflashing with some stock BIOS on both cards, can that make them compatible? Or is maybe the SLI bridge not seated properly? What exactly ARE the requirements for two cards to match, anyway?
Further, does anyone know the real-world implications of disabled PCI prefetch, as this was disabled in the last update for the motherboard? I use a PCI soundcard, and have some performance issues in games that seems to be somewhat correlated to sounds being played.
    Best regards, Martin "xarragon" Persson

    which one? http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=searchresult&keywords=NX7950GT
Min seems to be the "MSI NX7950GT - VT2D512EZ - HD", latter one with VIVO support. It does have passive cooling using heatpipes, and a sticker on it says what I put in double quotes above. That would be this card:

The sticker/model name for the ASUS card says:

    EN7950GT/HTDP/512M/A
I suppose it ought to be this card? http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=5XmjRmrwz3r9rWuv
I have also used GPU-Z to pull the following info from the ards, when they were connected one-by-one to the primary PCI-E 16X slot with the SLI bridge set to "non-SLI" mode.
    GPU-Z: MSI BX7950GT-VT2D512EZ-HD:

    GPU-Z: For ASUS P445
    GPU: G71 Revision: A2
    Device ID: 10DE-0295
    BIOS Version: 5.71.22.42.06
    Subvendor: ASUS (1043)
    ROPs: 16
    Bus interface: PCI-E x16 @ x16
    Shaders: 24 Pixel / 8 vertex
    DirectX support: 9.0c / SM3.0

    Bandwidth: 44.8 GB/s
    Memory size: 512 Mb

Both cards work fine, with the MSI card being slightly hotter due to the passive cooling. The ASUS one got an aftermarket Zalman VGA cooler mounted.

  • K8N-PLATINUM NF4U SLI and PSU Question

    Hi
I have read a lot in these forums about the issues arose with the K8N-PLATINUM NF4U SLI  board and the PSUs most of the users have.
Because I am going to buy the specific board i would like your opinion about the SilentPurePower 560W PSu of ThermalTake.
It gives 22A on 12V trail and it comes with a 20 to 24 pin adapter for Server motherboards use.
In addition I am going to use 2 sata Hds as raid and 2 DVD drives( one of them DVD-R) and the SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Zs.(Of course the onboard  soundcard will be disabled).
Do you think that the PSU will be adequate?
    Thanks for your help

Thanks for your reply blazing storm but  many people here talk all about a "safe minimum of 24A on the 12V trail".
But if i sum up all my power requirements( dvds , processor:AMD 64 3500+ , HDDs etc) i come up with 18 or 19A.
After all the MSI itself suggest for it's K8n Platinum NF4U SLI at least 450W and greater than 18A on 12V trail so I suppose that it wiil be ok.
Maybe 24A it is proper for future upgrades.

  • Various advice needed to overclock cpu using my MSI k8n platinum sli

Hey guys, i recently overclocked my amd 64 3500 cpu to 2.4ghz (from 2.2ghz) i was wondering if any could tell me how high i can get this cpu up to using the msi k8n platinum sli mobo.
At the moment the cpu's temp goes to 40-45 oC.
If i can overclock the cpu some more, can anyone give me detailed instructions on how to overclock it as i'm computer newbie.
i'm using the standard amd heatsink and fan so i know that will comprimise the potentail of the cpu's overclocking capability, as i heard that some people managed to get their cpu up to 3.ghz with a high quality fan, so i was just wondering if anyone can tell me how high i can get my cpu frequency with a standard fan as i really don't want to risk damaging the cpu if i go overboard.
    Thnx in advance.

No sé va Google bien traduce trabajos....... tan aquí.
Well I will not rely on Google translate in the future..............
This is what I typed in
"Most (if not all) motherboards today can be started/shutdown via the keyboard if enabled via BIOS.  You may have bumped the keyboard this would have triggered the system to start, so check your BIOS configuration.
Failing that, check that your motherboard is not shorted on a stand-off peg etc, and recheck your PSU connection to the motherboard.
I do not know how well Google translate works ....... so here goes."
and this is the translation back from Spanish to English
"The majority (if of all) the motherboards today they cannot be started/shutdown via the keyboard if they are allowed via BIOS.  You can have run into the keyboard that this one would have driven the system to begin, so it verifies his configuration of the BIOS.  To fail that, verifies that its motherboard is not put in short circuit in a pin etc of the isolation, and returns to inspect its connection of the power supply to the motherboard.  I do not know goes Google well translates works so here........"

MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum Problem

A lot of things could be wrong but it will be easier to figure out if we know what you did.  When you say you changed settings in Bios, do you remember your last settings and what you did?
It might be helpful if you created a sig (as described in the forum rules) to show what you have in your system like my sig below. (Hint- use profile button in sign on screen.)
Things could be broken even if there is no visible evidence (such as flames or melted component) of course.
If I had to guess and your d-bracket reading is correct, corrupted bios requiring new bios chip, but let's not guess as a lot of things could be wrong and you don't want to invest in a new bios chip if the board cannot be brought back to life.  Consider removing parts and testing them in an other machine.  Start with CPU and memory?
    Good luck.

It's still a Neo 4 board, notice the diamond version doesn't say Neo 4 either.
Thats incorrect, the "K8N Platinum SLI" and the "K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI" are different by the missing silicone image SATA controller and single vs duel gigabit nic's...
K8N Platinum SLI = 4 SATA ports and single Gb Nic  (this is the low cost SLI option)
K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI is sold in America and is identical to the Diamond (has the silicone image SATA controller) for 6 SATA ports and Dual Gb Nic's but don't expect the Duel Net Card with bluetooth and wireless.
K8N Neo4 Platinum is the plain old nforce4 ultra offering.
Check the differences on msicomputer.com vs msi.com.tw and it will become clearer, its taken me 2 months to get my head around it all.

A full format is your best option.... A repair MIGHT do the job, but I wouldn't count on it's stability / performance afterwards.
