SLI Platinum Hangs at Memory Detection Test

Hi Guys
A little help needed for the new boy
Just purchased the following;
AMD (Venice) Athlon 64 3500+ 939pin 512Kb
MSI K8N Platinum SLi
Gigabyte GeForce 6600GT 128MB PCI-E
Kingston KVR400X64C3AK2/1G -1GB (512MB 64M x 64-Bit x 2 pcs.) DDR400 CL3 184-Pin DIMM Kit
Tagan 480W Low Noise Power Supply
Unfortunately it doesn't get past the memory test. I have tried removing one of the DIMMs reaseating it and then tried in in every socket one by one and then swapped  it for the DIMM I removed and tried the process again...nothing. Anyone got any other ideas? at the moment I don't have any more DIMMs to try and eliminate the memory as the problem. I am guessing it will end up being either memory or board failure.
Cheers
Gareth

hi big man,
how do I change the voltage on the dram slots to 2.65v~2.85v?
Cheers
Go into BIOS in the Cell Menu->Memory Voltage set it to 2.65v for instance, I think your memory works at that voltage, but you can see that in the manufacturer site.
Be well....

  • 865PE Neo2(6728) D-Bracket hangs at Memory Detection Test

This is terribly annoying... I just bought the mother board... Its a 865PE Neo2(6728)800mhzFSB the processor is P4 2.4ghz 800mhz, 512k l2-Cache.  I dont know who made it like i know nothing about northwood or whatever, it says Intel on the box...  I have 512MB of "Legacy Electronics" PC3200 64x64 DDR...  I also just bought a NVdia G4 Ti-4200 64mb DDR 4x AGP made by Pixelview.  I have a 160GB WD 8mb Cache 7200 HD...  Ok the problem is when i go to boot up the computer, the VIDEO doesnt come on, and when i installed the "D-Bracket" the lights hang at 3 light, top right green all other red... Says in the manual that problem is memory detection test, testing onboard memory size,  will hang if damaged or not installed properly.  Ok.  I have no idea how that wo;uld happen so, just to check i took out RAM, no dice, i changed video cards to MX440 G4, no dice, i tried disconnection the PCI slot which has the 160GB hard drive connected(why it needs this i dont know, according to WD WinXP needs...) none of this changes anything.. How do i check the onboard memory or could it be anything else?  Ok thats all i have thanks for the help!!

Did you tried to boot up the system without the D-Bracket?
Yes it still does nothing, no video...  Thats why i put in the D-Bracket.  It doesnt sound like its going through the POST either.. I dont know if computers do that anymore thou;gh haha..
If you did, did you change to another piece of RAM to test?
I have no more DDR to put in, only SDRam and im sure that wont work..  I tried moving to different slots, 1 3 and 4 thinking maybe it was backwords i dunno...  Didnt do anything, and you USED to be able to take the ram out and still boot into bios etc...
Did you change any settings in your BIOS?
I havent even gotten video, nada... Black screen.
What is the wattage of the PSU you are using now?
Where do i find the wattage? The watts on the case is uh... 350 or 400 one of the two... The case says USB Deluxe P4 Case... And the watts on the Power supply is 115 if thats what you were wondering... Hope that answer the question

  • MS-7512 Ver 1.1 stuck at memory detection test

Been using this machine for a good year now:
    P45 Platinum MS-7512 ver 1.1
    2x 2GB OCZ PC2 8500 [email protected]
    Intel Q9550
    Asus HD4850
It has very minor rebooting/stability issues, but nothing that can't be fixed with a reboot.
But yesterday it went into a constant cycle of rebooting: it will try to boot, then reset itself and boot again, without POSTing properly.
I cleared the CMOS and now it's stuck at the memory detection test: no beeps, no display, but fans and leds are all working.
    I've done the following:
    - disconnected all HDDs and peripherals
    - clearing the CMOS multiple times (also tried removing the CMOS batt)
    - reseated the gfx card and RAM
    - moved RAM to DIMM 1 & 3, instead of the original DIMM 2 & 4 (in the initial building, the machine didn't POST when I had my RAM sticks in 1 & 3; it worked on 2 & 4, so I didn't think much of it)
    - one stick of RAM on DIMM 1
    - tried a single stick of my friend's Kingston RAM on DIMM 1
    Any more ideas?
I'll be borrowing another gfx card for testing; I just hope it's not the motherboard I have to replace.

What PSU are you using? Please list out the PSU specs and amps.
I'm using the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad
    Quote
According to the label, the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750 Quad will deliver 224 amps on the +3.3V rail and 30 amps on the +5V rail, for a total combined power output of 170W. There is one single 12V rail, and it outputs up to 60 amps! As we mentioned, the Silencer 750 Quad's wattage rating is a Sustained Output Value, not Peak. There is a big difference. The Silencer 750 Quad can reach a max of 825W during peak loads.

  • 848P Neo LS "Memory Detection Test" hang

On ocassion my pc won't do a soft reboot.  It hangs at the MD Test. ( according to the Diagnostic LED's on the back.  I've swapped the Dimms slots (only 2 on this board )  and I've ran windows mem test from a floppy. No errors were found w/it.
And sometimes it reboots up normally.
Is this perhaps due to a weak power supply?

OK, i upped the DRAM voltage to 2.70.  Only way to do that on my board is to enable performace settings in the bios.  So, I then disabled "overclocking" and had to reset ALL my settings.
Ya know, why does MSI offer a board w/SATA and even when you use the Performance settings you still have to go and change the On-Chip ATA operation mode from legacy to native and THEN you STILL have to adjust so the SATA is read 1st, whew. not to mention the other settings.  Like enable floppy drive seek and the like.
Anyway, when i did ALL this, and "saved settings" It STILL hung at reboot.  System is on, keyboard is active optical drive checks itself out, but no signal to my monitor, and it will stay like that for infinity! LOL
Is my power supply perhaps to small?  I have a 400watt:
from the label on it's side,
    SH     SH-400ATX
(all it gives is the colors of the individual power cables and there respective outputs, so... here goes)
    ORANGE:  +3.3V   20A MAX
    RED      :  +5V   40AMAX
    YELLOW:  +12V   16A MAX
    WHITE:  -5V   0.5A MAX
    BLUE:  -12V   0.5A MAX
    PURPLE:  +5SVSB   2A MAX
I would use this PSU if i thought it would last, but I've had it in another system for about 2 years and I dont know how much "life" it might have left in it.
How do you know if your PSU is going bad anyway, .... Just wait for the fan to start making a noise?

  • K8N SLI Platinum hangs in games

    Hi.
In some 3D games the  computer hangs. In UT2004 it hangs in the settings-window and in BF2 it jumps back to windows before it has load a map.
But then only windows or programs is running all works fine.
    The Bios is v3.4.
Vcore is set to 1.49v and  on memory it´s 2.65V
I haved tested to just use 1 memory at the time, then UT2004 worked but not BF2. (when this games are running the processor works at 100% all the time!?)
It makes no differance if i only use one grafikcard or both.
I haved tryed outher memorys (2x512 corsair)  and 3 others PSU.
No problems are shown then i use 3DMARK or other benchmarks.
    Anyone know what to do?

well, the specs look ok, alltrough i dont like OCZ as a PSU manufacturer, but you did test other PSU´s,
i would  try running the video cards in non sli, first test one, then the other (one at a time), and then start abusing them with nvidia demos, Excess GL, shader mark and GPU intensive benchmarks,
My Aopen 6600gt use to crash with unreal engine based games, and i thought it was a unreal engine VS nvidia drivers issue,
then i ran Excess GL and found it my 6600GT has a damaged shader unit, which would be a good reason to why it dosnt crash with Enemy terretory which is a Quake 3 engine based game, what i still dont understand is why it could complete 3dmark03 but not survivde 5 mins worth of excess GL
my bet would be a defective card,
btw, run chkdsk to see if your harddrives are fine, sometime lost closters or file table errors can cause problems with the swapfile, that means it directly affects virtual memory

  • P6N SLI Platinum- Cannot set Memory Speed -Manual/Linked

It doesn't seem to matter whether I have the memory set to Linked or Manual- I get the Linked setting in any OC setup.  ??? At stock AUTO, it puts it at the rated 800mhz (pc6400), though.
So for a 1520FSB setting (=380), it sets the memory to 760 in both the Linked setting and the Manual setting.  Sounds like something in the bios, but I have tried the 1.0, 1.1, and 1.22b bioses with the same result!
Unfortunately, I recorded my OC settings but not the output on my first numerous attempts. But I want to say that originally, when I started the OC's, when I set the memory to Manual it ended up being Linked. And vice versa. So that at 1400FSB (350) --Linked, it gave me the 800 Memory setting and at 1400 (350) --Manual, it gave me 700 on the memory. But I'm not positive now (about a hundred OC settings later --and yes now I've been writing it down) that it ever worked right.
Any help or thoughts? Anyone else with this problem? Any fixes?

MSI BIOS is not flexible in overclocking or changing DDR RAM Timing settings. Please live with it and trial and error with the RAM timing setting that yields the best result.
I'm just supposed to accept the fact that you cannot set the ram to a manual timing, that it will always run as linked..... then why have the option to select it in the bios if it's not going to be functional. That's just unacceptable!  live with it......right ! That's shoddy at best.!
Didn't have this problem with any Asus board (which has been several) or Abit board that I've owned!
And why is noone reporting this same behavior from their board and bios in this forum or over in hardforum or in the anandtech threads????

  • Failure to detect RAM on P6N SLI Platinum

    Hi,
I am having problems with new Motherboard and RAM.  I cant get the system to boot consistently.
No OS installed and BIOS at FailSafe for most testing.
During boot the system will hang. The POST code from the D Bracket 2 is
Memory Detection Test - Testing onboard memory size. The D-LED will hang if the memory module is damaged or not installed properly
With 2 sticks of RAM in either dual or single channel mode I only can boot about 10% of the time.  I have tried all combinations of slots and it makes no noticeable difference.
With 1 Stick RAM installed I can't boot about third to half the time.  Different slots seem to all act the same.
    When it is working it goes in groups 3 to 7.  For example B B B B F F F F F B B B B B B F F F B B B  F F F F F F F F F F B B B B B B F F F F F F F F F where B is able to boot and F is failure to boot.
When no RAM in installed it hangs at the same Memory Detection Test as to be expected.  It only gives the continuous beep to indicate missing RAM about 4 or 5 power cycles.
Also tried setting RAM options to 667 MHz & Auto or voltage 2V & Auto, 800Mhz 5-5-5-18-2T @ 1.9v (Corsair recommended) did not seem to make any difference.
If the system does boot there are no issues.  RAM testing with Memtest-86 on single stick passes OK.
    Any Ideas?

Does your computer run stable once booted?  If so, you might want to flash to the latest beta bios and see if it helps.  Also, if you can make it into windows, run cpu-z from cpuid.com .  Check out what it says about what your ram spd is and what the current settings are.  For me, the auto setting for ram in the bios does not work correctly.  In fact, it often set my ram timings to fast in caused me instability and no boot issues until I manually set them.  I only figured this out from cpu-z.

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum

ok I've only seen 1 post from this same issue with this mobo. And right now I could use some help.
I've been out almost 3 months from a pc and this is the 4th mobo that I've went with. 1st try with a MSI board.
I'm setting up with the following:
    AMD 6400+ (3.2GHz)
    8Gb DDR2 800 Gskill Ram
    250 SATAII WD HDD
    750W SilverStone powersupply
    Light-On Dvd/Cd-Rom Combo Drive.
    Also have a 9800Gt XFX Gfx Card (512MB )
Toss everything in, simple setup with a single 2GB Stick of Ram in the pc. No Gfx Card went to use on board, and would not show any video feed. I would assume this could be a issue from my parts, but I've tried everything out in this to another pc also tried using a single 1GB stick of GSkill ram as well as a 2.2Ghz AMD Cpu. And still same issues. Only thing I'm unsure about would be if some how my powersupply is not putting out enough power to run even the needed things for this. ( Mobo, CPU, heatsink, HDD, CD-Rom, 1 stick of Ram ) But still get nothing even after 2 days of messing around with it, and I'm unable to find any thing much about the LCD lights from the mobo on line.
The combo that I get when I go to boot:
    LED15 - Green
    LED16 - Orange
    Group4:
    LED4: Red
    LED5: Off
    Group3:
    LED6 - Red
    LED7 - Off
    Group2:
    LED8 - Off
    LED9 - Green
    Group1:
    LED10 - Red
    LED11 - Off
From what this shows in the book that I get the only thing that matches up with this combo would be a memory Detection Test. And it says that if the LEDs will hang if the memory module is damaged or not installed properly. But my only problem with this is: I've tried 8 different sticks of ram in this. 4 of them were 2GB Sticks, then the other 4 were 1GB sticks.
So could it be a issues with the mobo. And for the question, I've had this mobo now for 2 days. I received it just Wed's the 19th. The only other thing that I'm unable to test out or swap would be a powersupply. I was thinking if it comes to question this, I would get a tester for it due to thats the one thing I do not have.
Would like to see if this is a issue that I share alone, or if there is others with this issue or have ran into this. Also would be great, I'm willing to see what I can do to help it. I've tried almost everything possible with what I have. Testing powersupply would be the last option that I have laying around to see if that carry s a problem.
Also for the ones who would questions, I've tried all the extra power ports on the motherboard wondering if that might be the issue and still same issues.
Thanks if you could help me. Even if you have a wim that might work, feel free to toss ideas up.

    You are correct.
Sorry I could not help more. Hopefully someone else can (the durn error LEDs do not have an explanation as far as I can figure out - they only seem to tell you where you are in the bootup process).
Well at least you were sitting here trying with me, but I can say I figured it out.
Quote from: Fredrik on 22-November-08, 09:12:08
    What BIOS have you got?
You might try to run outside the case, if you haven't.
BIOS would not be able to tell you or at least I would not have been. Other then it was out of the box.
But your idea of running out of the case would have worked if I not had gotten it before logging into here again with it up and running.
Seems as something that I had or was in the case was shorting something out within it so I just redid it all and putting each part in as I go. Right now only 3 things left, 4Gb more of Ram, then the sound card and everything is in working order again.
Thanks for the help and the response here guys/gals.

  • P45 Platinum hang @ power up

    Hi,
my p45 platinum wont boot to BIOS. It gets stuck at Memory Detection Test. Cold boot gets it sometimes to "Decompressing BIOS image to RAM for fast booting.".
I'm not getting any feed to my screen.
    My build:
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (older rev)
    MSI P45 Platinum (BIOS v1.6)
    2x Mushkin enhanced XP2-8500 2GB
    2x Club3D radeon HD 5770
    Thermaltake Toughpower 750w cable management
    I've tried the following:
    1. cleared cmos (many times)
    2. switch the places of the memory sticks and also tried with one only
    3. uninstalled the whole build and then re-installed it (including cpu)
    4. bareboned the build (only cpu, video card and memory sticks installed)
    5. switched the video card (got 2 identical)
    6. tried even without the memory sticks
The problem is similar to what happened 2 years ago. Back then I sent the MOBO for a warranty service and it came back with a note "No problems found". I also ordered new memory sticks and they didnt help.
After 2 months of being powered off, the problem just vanished without a trace of what might've happened..
The problem came back after this:
I was uninstalling usb device drivers on Win7Pro, and I had to restart the computer because i accidentally uninstalled the mouse and keyboard and Windows wouldnt re-install them even when I changed the usb port of the forementioned devices. After restarting, the motherboard just got stuck with the 4 leds on (which indicates that the processor is damaged or not installed properly). After powering off the computer, I turned it back on, and then the motherboard got stuck to the "Memory Detection Test" phase..

  • P7N SLI Platinum Unstable with over 2GB ram and/or dual channel memory on.

Hello need some help or to report something to MSI regarding blue screens, freezes when booting Vista 64 (SP1 + all fixes installed) with more then 2GB ram.  Single channel mode works (either 1 stick of 2 GB or 3 sticks of 2GB) and is rock stable.  Booting with 2 x 2 or 4 x 2 yields instability and blue screens.
I read over Microsoft's hotfix KB929777 however it appears this patch was applied during SP1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929777 - when I attempted to apply this hotfix I got the message this update does not apply to your system.
Memory tested in other gaming system using 4 sticks of G.Skill 1066 DDR2 ram and still have the same issues.  Other forums like Evga.com, Tom's hardware and 411overkill.com tend to suggest some problem with this new bios version 2.0, written by Nvidia.  Some others mention possibly an Nvidia nforce driver issue.
Therefore, under duress during testing - with 1 stick or 3 sticks of ram, all tests perfect and passes all stability tests, good marks in Sandra, plays any game.  With 2 or 4 sticks of ram, very unstable won't stay up but for seconds.
Any ideas?  (Tested 7 ways until Sunday!)
My other rig, rocks solid and stable with Vista 64....  It's the Evga new mainboard 780i with triple SLI (132-CK-NF78-A1), 8gb of Gskill 1066ddr2, MSI 8800GT (x2 sli mode) Q6600 @ 3.2 ghz - Raid 0 on dual WD caviar 640 gb/sata 3.0gb/sec.  Seasonic 700w p/s.  8gb of memory and not a hiccup.  Ram 2.0 volts, cpu @ 1.36v.  Will handle the memory from both systems with out fault.
Considering I can swap memory back and forth and confirm it's not the sticks, swap graphics boards (own 3 of them!) and rule out that....
    Fyi.  Any help is appreciated!

Dump question, but have you pickup the correct update e.g. for 64bit? ==> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=91672C7C-614B-404C-850C-377541E93C18&displaylang=en
"This comes inside SP1 for vista 64, as noted with my other system during the build. "
    Better double check it.
Install all four memory sticks and do a memory check with >>Memtest86<< 1st, ensure that no error(s) will comes during testing.
    Also how about that?:
Quote from: BOSSKILLER on 07-April-08, 23:55:36
Remove your OC then see how its goes.
"When the system boots in single channel mode (only 2 or 6gb of ram meaning 1 or 3 sticks installed into the 4 slots) its' rock stable.  When it boots into dual channel mode (2 x 2 sticks or 2 x 4 sticks) extemely unstable. "
That means, timings are too tight, or they need a bit more vcore help, or some of the memory stick has failure.
    "MSI P7N SLI Platinum - MS-7380 - Bios 2.0 on Vista Ultimate 64-bit - all updated."
That BIOS is not for your board, you should use 1.xx

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum - Testing

Ok so since I built this PC in February I have tested it with Windows XP SP3 Pro and Windows 7 Beta. Only issues I've had is with the HD Audio from Realtek. I read posts here about people having problems with their K9N2 SLI Platinum boards and maybe you're trying too hard.
My system specs are below, my PSU from Ultra is the 2nd Ultra PSU that I have owned, the first generation X-Connect 500W I had lasted from February 2005 to February 2009 and probably still has 5-10 years left on it. I upgraded to the 3rd Generation X-Connect 600W PSU, it's sufficient for single graphics card and powers everything just fine. Modular to keep airflow awesome.
I would only trust these PSU manufacturers:
    Ultra
    Corsair
    Thermaltake
    Enermax
    Antec
I have only good reviews for Ultra and Enermax since I've owned them and they have never failed.
Back to the motherboard though, so my findings is that Windows XP Pro SP3 still has a few issues with this motherboard, mostly due to audio drivers, but not MSI's fault. Windows 7 Beta runs like a top, absolutely will be buying Windows 7 when it becomes available.
I had a red LED on my board for the longest time, then I figured out the issue, no floppy drive installed, after turning off the FDD controller, the red light went away.
CPU Idle Temps 23C with an Ambient Temp of about 70F, Load 30-32C same ambient temp. Stock HSF, 5 Case fans, no thermal compound, and excellent cable management.
Basically I completely love this board, but Realtek needs some better drivers for Windows XP.
I think I will be testing OpenSUSE on this after Windows 7 beta expires.
For those having troubles with this board I really don't know what to say, maybe try paying for the name when you buy PSU, Memory, Video. I went with Ultra, Corsair, and MSI and I did my research and I actually read many bad reviews of this board and still bought it. 2nd MSI board I've owned, love them both.
Anyway, thought I'd write something positive here, instead of seeing all the negativity towards MSI.

I have had bad experiences with Ultra as well.

I'm running the Memory Voltage at 2.10v, everything is stable no problems, no crashes or BSOD,
The OCZ SLI Edition Memoryboards seems to handling it well..
Memory is clocked at 966Mhz, this seems to be the highest I can take it, any higher and Quake3 Demo locks and it says driver fault..
This seems to be the most stable overclocking setting I can reach so far..
Maybe a increase on the CPU or FSB,NB voltages might gain me a few more higher freq settings..
    BIOS Settings
And from 764fps on Q3 Demo Test at 1280x1024 running at 3.54Ghz
To   796.9 fps  at the same Screen Res running at 3.66Ghz

  • KT3 Ultra2 hangs during POST - Memory Detection

    System specs:
    KT3 Ultra2
    Athlon XP 1900+
    GeForce4 Ti4200
    PC2700 512MB RAM non-ECC
    ***Nothing else connected***
The system only passes POST after clearing CMOS.  When I load the default BIOS settings, the system hangs when it gets to the Memory Detection step of POST.  I have tried different memory sticks and even motherboards with the same results.  This seems to be a BIOS settings issue.  Any Ideas???

I have tried 2.  Mushkin (Samsung chips) with a heat sink.  The other was oem and the chips are also Samsung.  Same problem with both.
The Mushkin works fine in another system.

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum memory problems

I just built my first computer with the K9N2 SLI Platinum.  The computer will not boot up with my ozr memory (2x2GB) SLI-Ready Edition DDR2 PC2-6400 4 GB Dual Channel.  Here is the link: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000XFI1EE .  I can get it to boot with my old kingston ram (2x512MB).  Once and a while it will start up with one stick of the 2GB with the Kingston but not all 4 at once.  When I do get it to start up I eventually get the blue screen of death.  The screen never stays on for long to write stuff down.  This is my first build and I used my old hard drive with the same windows on it.  It is vista home premium 32-bit.  Would changing all the hardware mess up the software on the hard drive?  Let me know what you all think.  Thanks!

Could be the seating of the processor. Think it would be good to take the motherboard out and reseat the processor. Clean off old before applying new thermal grease.
If you want to learn what the BSOD says, normally they a r e  a Windows/software problem,  disable Windows' automatic restart. Right-click This computer and choose Properties. Click Advanced, and un-tic the 'Restart automatically'.
Could it be a cpu problem?  I do notice when i have both of my 2x2GB rams in i get four red LED lights which my manuel does not say anything about.  I have read on other forums that this could be the cpu is not seated right.  Is there any software that will tell me if the cpu is not installed correctly?
