Slice, cut object

Have a circle, skeich a line, cut object to line shape. The slice thing creates something, don 't care about. In Xara and  Painter sketch a stroke and hit slice or cut and the object is cut to the new shape. CS5, this thing must be re-designed for artists working fast.
Thanks, you know it's so simple.

The knife tool works perfect. the tool  icon is very small. A quick stroke on a circle, cut, 2 pieces.
Works after all. Found in my Illustrator 7 manual.
Now that we have the Google Translation then we can be of assistance.
Yes the knife tool is fine but you can also use the pathfinder as well with more precision and the ability to fine tune the divisional demarcation. Using the divide command. that is because you can move the lines before you hit the divide command.

  • Cutting object

    Hello,
I still (!) use Illustrator CS2 (english version) and cannot find the procedure to cut a part on a simple long extented square object.
In fact, the final object is based on two different triangles, one long and one short that i combined in opposit position (do you see what i mean) ?
I do have the original manual, (of course) but where is it mentionned ?
Even asking "Help" i don't find it !
    Yes, you're right...i must be stupid ;-)
But in fact, i'm from Belgium, where the legal languages are...French or...Dutch !
The next CS4 will be a French one.
So sorry if i made spelling mistakes.
Thanks for your help in advance,

    Hello Sugurdur,
    Many thanks for your reply.
I have CS3 as well, but it's installed on an other computer where i made the
mistake to use Vista Ultimate 64 bitts
Always problems...Decide to close several times...
Using CS3 for instance, drawing one rectangle, and want to adjust the
dimensions x : y,  changing one dimension and the other modified by it self
Which means, i'm not able to adjust according to "my" whishes !
This is probably due to wrong configuration i made, no ?
I think i will install simple Windows XP SP2 (SP3?) waiting until Windows 7
    will be reliablr (?).
By the way, can i send you i flash, or zip object via this mail ?
I want you to shaw what i 'm trying (humm..) to remake (i did 6-7 years ago
I stopped using applications because of business duties since that time.
    Please let me know,

  • How do I slice an object in half without a stroke appearing where I sliced it?

I want to be able to draw an object that has a stroke and a fill, and then slice a line through the object so I can give it two separate fills. This is effectively what I'm trying to do: http://imgur.com/Obqwg
What is the easiest, most efficient way to do this? Right now I have two fill-only objects (the top color object and bottom color object) framed by another stroke-only object on top. The method I'm using makes it very difficult to edit the shape later since I'm now dealing with three separate parts.

This is actually possible  below is a rectangle with one stroke two fills on of the fils has a tranfsform effect scaling it vertically and and moving it downward
then I made a Envelope Distort with mesh giving it 2 columns and 12 rows so that I only had to work with some of the rows that were positioned where I want to create the bend or wave.
I could do avideo if the OP cannot figure it out.

  • PS CS6 Edit commands grayed out to copy / cut objects and layers?

Why are my edit commands (copy and cut) grayed out / unavailable? When trying to copy a selected layer or object, all my editing commands are grayed out and unavailable. No idea why. Even if I convert something to a smart object, no joy. The only thing I seem to be able to select and copy/cut/paste is text in the text edit mode. makes no sense and is rendering PS unusable. How do I fix this?
    Thanks.

Your seeing the transform handles with the move tool.
    Try something like this:
    Open an image
Click on the Rectangular Marquee Tool in the tool box
(just below or to the left of the move tool in the tool box)
(or press M on the keyboard)
    Draw a selection (marching ants)
    Edit>Copy
    Edit>Paste
You should end up with a new layer with the copied contents from within the selection

  • Export to png: slice cut off

When I export an image to png, there' s a slice of the image cut off on one side of the image.
Can anyone give me a hint on how to avoid this?
    Thank you very much!

What cs are you using?  I attached your art back to you. You can click off the transparency in save to web.
You will have a solid background. But the art you sent covers the whole art board. So that should not be an issue.
You may want to hard restart your illustrator or delete the preference to get back to default preferences.
Then retry to export to png or save to web and devices compression to png.
Look under your illustrator help menu.

  • Cutting object from photoshop and pasting in word

How do I cut an object from a pic using photoshop and paste just that object on a word doc? Everything i've done so far has given me a square box with white in it? Thanks

That is expected and inherent how the office apps work. You need to save the files as a PNG or TIFF with transparency and properly import them into Word using the Insert Graphic function.

  • Red Scarlet(?), FCP, QuicktimePRO,... greenscreening and cutting objects..

Hi again.. (now this question comes assuming everything has been done right.. lighting, focus, etc..) After someone has digitally filmed a video sequence and then broken it down into individual frames(USING QT PRO).. lets say you have shot something simple such as a man against a greenscreen backdrop.. this now being a single tiff file, and you're only dealing with this one image file at a time, what program could cut him out with the highest detail of accuracy? I see adobe has either lightroom or it may have been imageready that simply paints a mark on the object and it cuts it out for you.. and i know photoshop has that magic trace tool.. but what would be the most accurate.
Or, would it be better to as Mike Barber wrote: "FCP has chroma key capabilities, as does After Effects. Shake may be your best bet, however a very complex tool to use."
I plan on doing different things in Photoshop with these images though.

FWIW, I just came off a project where I had to pull about forty keys. I found the Final Cut keyer kinda weak. We were on a serious deadline and not getting acceptable results so, in a panic, I dropped five bills on the Primatte plug in, the same keyer as you find in Motion. It did an awesome job! I never quarreled with their "Auto" setting. Very clean keys. Made my deadline. Very happy guy.

  • How to? Cut object by rectangle

First of all, sorry for my English, i'm from Holland.
I don't have a lot of experience using Indesign, but for my work I have to do 1 little job using Indesign.
Take a look at the pictures, I have to make png's of the circles, with a transparant background (not this purple one). The dimension of these png's have to be the same as the purple rectangle (640*88).
I want to cut out the parts of the circles that are outside the rectangle, so that i can copy them directly into photoshop (after making all the purple rectangles fully transparant).
I hope you guys can help me out,

If you group the circle objects you can cut and "paste into"  the rectangle, which will act as a mask, but not actually cut the circles.

  • How to slice object and stroke with knife tool?

I am trying to slice an object into 2 pieces using the knife tool. The problem is that both cut pieces retain a complete stroke outlining the object rather than a cut stroke. How do I slice the object in half and get the effect of cutting thru the stroke as well? Thanks!

I don't believe you can do this in a single operation. You'll need to knife the object, then select the newly created segment on each object with the direct selection tool, then delete to open each path.
But this is likely to cause another problem: once you delete the path segment that you knifed through, the object's fill will form a straight edge from one open end point to the other. IOW, you'll lose any curvature you might have created with the knife.
There may be another way; others who are more adept will be along to offer it I'm sure.

  • Textslices over slices

    Hi,
I've made a websitedesign in fireworks. Right now the design is ready, but something is messing up a part of my
design as I export it to dreamweaver.
The menubar on top is made of a rounded rectangle with shadow. I sliced this rectangle and shadow so Fireworks knows it's a image
that needs to stay in place after exporting it.
Now my problem is that on that menubar(rounded rectangle) I've placed text/ hyperlinks of course with slices. I can't seem to export it right, no matter
what I do, with the different slices. Even if I change the place or priority in layers, after exporting it it's in some cases just an image
and then I can't use the links or in other cases it are really links, but because of the slices over the text, the whole design is shifted,
ruined and not as I want to.
I tried to use roll over images, but nothing seems to do the trick. I tried making the rounded rectangle to a background image(this makes it even worse after exporting).
I'm out of options at the moment, and I do believe this is a very simple trick. Right now, I made the design with alle my pages in just 4 hours.. I'm trying to
get this thing going for over 5 days now.
    Can someone please help??

Sure. Lots of ideas. It really comes down to what you are trying to accomplish with Fireworks.
Let's be clear here that you are not trying to build your final website from Fireworks. At this time you are only creating a prototype, yes? If that assumption is correct, I'll try to show you what I mean.
If you are planning/hoping to use Fireworks as your web page creation tool, it can be done with simple designs, using the CSS and Images export,  but I don't recommend it. I'll be happy to point you to tutorials which cover this topic in depth, but I honestly find it faster to build my production web pages in Dreamweaver, and use Fireworks for what it's great at; page design, prototyping and image optimization.
As I said, overlapping slices causes issues, further breaking up your graphics into smaller pieces. and making a very fragile, complicated table based layout when you choose to export as HTML and Images. This export workflow is really only suitable for a prototype export, because it converts your design entirely into a graphical layout, where each slice is placed in a table cell. There is no true text exported in this workflow.
If you slice "text" in Fireworks, it is automatically converted to an image. That's what slices do. For that matter, if you export as HTML and images, this export workflow will even create images of non-sliced areas, based on your choices in the Export dialog box. That's just the nature of the beast.
You either add hotspots (making sure they are above the slice web object in the Web layer) so that you can create an image map, OR if you want to show interactivity like rollover effects, delete the banner slice and add the slices to the text areas and let FW export our those text elements as sliced graphics, allowing it to cut up the rest of the design as it sees fit. FW will even generate the JavaScript to create the rollover effects in the html prototype.
Again we are just talking graphical prototype here, not finished HTML and CSS web page.
If your goal is to build out the final web page, well, that's where the duplicate page can come in handy. The first page shows your mock up design, the duplicate strips out all the elements that should not be part of the slices (like text). You can then export out the graphics cleanly and use Dreamweaver to build the final page design. Alternatively, you could just hide the text objects on the original page and export from there. It's just a matter of preference, more than anything else.
Here is a link to your page, exported as HTML and Images from Fireworks with hotspots set into the banner area for your navigation. I don't have any extra pages, so I've just set them all as null links, with the exception of the logo, which links to the PNG file. The point I'm making is that the hotspots do work on top of a slice.
You can click on your logo to view and download my first version of your testpage.
If you scroll to the bottom of the page, there is another link that will take you to another version of your PNG file, where I used a duplicate page.
As I said, if you're interested in trying to make FW export out a final web page, the export workflow to use is CSS and Images, but it will take planning on your part and solid knowledge of HTML and CSS to tweak the final layout. FW's CSS export is rarely a 1-click solution. Let me know if you want links to tutorials about this process.

  • Wall decals over size.. functionality to cut image into piece on artboard ?

1- I am doing wall decals, I am drawing a big tree (7 foot long). My vinyl roll size in 24 inches. Is there a functionality in Adobe Illustrator CS5.5 to split the image into section ready to cut ? My cutting software can do it but I want to do it in illustrator... is there a way ???
2- I am not able to find information on how illustrator can help me to place the objects on the artboard (with spaces between each objects) to maximize the vinyl space available without have to place each object by hand one by one.
    Thanks Nancy

This kind of stuff (vinyl cutting project setup) was a pain to do in Illustrator prior to its finally (literally decades late to the game) acquiring the ability to have more than one page in a file. It's still a pain comparitive to Adobe's other vector drawing program (FreeHand), due to Illustrator's still-yet-to-appear ability to draw to user-defined scale.
This is how I routinely do it in FreeHand:
    1. Draw the whole design at a comfortable scale (ex: 1"=1') on a convenient page size (ex: tabloid, so I can print it on a desktop printer). Define spot color Swatches for each vinyl.
    2. When the design is done, add pages (one for each vinyl to be used) with either height or width the actual width of my vinyl (ex: 24"). Set ruler guides on each page to indicate what I consider a comfortable "maximum cut width" for the gripper/roller margin of my machine.
    3. Select all elements of a single vinyl color, duplicate them to one of the full-size pages. Do this for each vinyl.
    4. Scale the elements to actual size (ex: 1200%).
    5. For an element too large for the maximum cut width, place a pair of ruler guides separated by the amount of desired overlap (ex: .25").
    6. Duplicate the object in place. Use the Knife tool to slice the object along one of the guides. Delete the unwanted piece.
    7. Similarly cut the remaining (original) copy along the other guide. Delete the unwanted piece.
    8. Freely arrange (move and/or rotate) each of the pieces so as to maximize vinyl usage on each vinyl-specific page. Drag length of vinyl pages to fit final arrangement.
    9. Export the full-size pages only.
    10. Open the exports in my cutter driver software, and cut.
I leave it to you to translate the same basic operations to Illustrator. Some of the reasons I still find Illustrator inferior for this:
Still no support for user-defined ruler scales.
Very unreliable snaps behavior at zooms.
    The infernal "Global" swatch designation.
Pages interface (like many things) needlessly cumbersome compared to FreeHand's. (Separate "Artboard mode" is tedious for arranging Artboards, making page-specific guides, snapping Artboards to grid and to each other.)
Inferior behaviors of Boolean path operations ("Pathfinders"). (Ex: converting compound paths to groups.)
Inferior cutting tools (Ex: releasing compound of compound paths; failure to handle open, unfilled paths.)

  • Dividing Multiple Objects Below With a Stroke

    OK.
I made 3 circles one inside the other. each has a stroke applied.
I created 2 triangles and joined them to make an hour glass shape.
I placed the hour glass over the circles.
now i am trying to use the hour glass to cut the 3 circles below. It ends up looking like a spider web.
In these photos the antennae is 2 shapes and on top of the layers that hold what i have descibed.

In addition to to the method Jacob suggested to hide parts of the paths, if you have a recent version you can alternatively use knockout group by checking this option in the Transparency panel after grouping all and making the objects that you want to act as eraser with 0 opacity. Like with the Opacity Mask method everything is editable directly but without the hassle of releasing and reapplying the mask between edits. This image shows the this.
If you want to actually cut the paths, instead of hiding parts of them, here's one way.
    1. select as shown and Cut
    2. Paste in Front (now your paths are open)
    3. Select All, pick the Shape Builder tool and draw a line as shown to highlight the cutting object/s
    4. This is the result from the Shape Builder. Select the cutting path with the black pointer and delete it.
    5. Shows the result

  • 9 slice scaling - not working as described

In order to create a 9 slice scaled object, I have tried
Flash help and various tutorials on the web and none of them
produce the result they say they will. All of the instructions say
    basically this:
    Create a movie clip symbol
Enable 9 slice scaling in its properties
Open the symbol in symbol editing mode
Move the guides where you want them to define the
    non-scaleable regions
Place an instance of the symbol on the stage
At this point, I am supposed to be able to scale the object
with the guides taking effect. I have NOT once been able to do
this, the whole thing always scales and distorts the corners in the
way the guides are supposed to prevent! One tutorial told me that I
had to preview the movie and then I could see the result, but that
was not true either. Is there a step missing? Flash is constantly
one of the apps where I find tutorials and help often don't produce
    the advertised result.

Don't know what to tell you. I've never done 9-slice and I
just looked it up in the help files and it worked both on the stage
    and on publish.
Do you have Control -> Enable Live Preview checked?
That is what is needed to see it on stage.
Are you trying to scale imported bitmap images? They won't
    9-scale.
Does your clip have nested clips inside it? They won't
    9-scale.
    Can't think of anything else.
Oddly enough I almost always find the help produces exactly
    the advertised results.
