Slide Clips in Multicam Angle Editor?

Trying to help a friend learn multicam in FCP X, and he's run into an issue with the clip sync that's making him need to manually sync up one clip.
Problem: clips can't move. They're snapping back to where they were before. Anybody know of a way to freely slide a clip in its angle in the editor?

Normally when you open the multicam clip in the angle editor, the pointer defaults to Position tool, which lets you move the angles freely in the lanes. If this isn't happening for you press P for the Position tool.
P.S. you can also nudge with comma/period or Shift-comma/period.

  • Multicam Angle Editor not vertically layering clips

I created a new multicam clip which consisted of 4 video clips and a master audio clip.  I used the defaults when creating the clip (including the "use audio when synchronizing" checkbox).  When I view this in the multicam angle editor however, it shows all the video clips lined up horizontally in one row, rather than displaying seperate vertical clips.  The viewer reflects only 2 clips as well.  What have I done wrong?  I've been troubleshooting this for 2 hours to no avail.  Thanks for any help.
I'm using an iMac 27", OSX 10.8.2, 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3, with 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory.  FCP 10.0.6 Free Trial.

Have you set Camera Name/Angel on the clips???
If not, FCPX will treat it as One camera angel, and you get this result!
Make sure to set Angel in the inspector, and MultiCam sync on Angel

  • Effects in Multicam Angle Editor not Rendering

When I add color correction (magic bullet looks) to a master clip in a multicam edit (so in the Angle Editor), the effect does not render either in the background or manually. The effect does appear, it just does not render.
So, once I add the effect this way I can no longer edit or even get smooth playback in real-time with the multi-cam editor (it needs to render first). I expect that with Magic Bullet Looks, so I know I have to render once apply it. But it won't render unless I export it as a movie.
I can add the color clip by clip instead in the regular timeline, but that can be very time consuming.
Even if I wait to do color correction until the very end of my workflow, I still need to be able to render effects on muticam masters if possible.
Are there some options I could try to get around this?

It is kind of a difficult senario to explain, but I am trying with Red Giant to see if they have any thoughts on it.
But I am thinking that in the multicam angle editor, you can only apply effects that your system can handle in real-time and not effects that would require rendering (at least until final output of a project).

  • Crop command in multicam angle editor

When I activate the crop command in the multicam angle editor the viewer screen goes black. The command functions but I cannot see a picture to evaluate what the crop will look like. When I am finished with the crop command the picture returns and I can see the resulting crop. It works fine on regular clips and even on the multicam clip in a project on the timeline. The only problem is in the angle editor. Weird.
    OS X 10.9.4 & FCPX 10.1.3
    Thanks

I did a quick test and I have the exact same problem. In the Angle Editor, Trim works ok, but both Crop and Ken Burns turn the viewer black. They still work, but you're "blind" making the adjustments.

  • Multicam Angle Editor Clips Can't Be Moved

I have a multicam clip and when I open it in the Angle Editor, I can't move any of the clips. They just snap back to where they were. For whatever reason, FCP X really fudged up the "auto" syncing of these clips and I have to move them around and sync manually.
    What's the secret?
I can press , and . to nudge left and right but grabbing them and dragging them down the timeline isn't working.
    Thanks!

    That's it.
Thank you so much for your time, Tom! Hope you are having a great day.

  • Problems colour correcting multicam in angle editor

    Hope someone can help:
I'm trying to colour correct one of the multicam clips in the angle editor.
When I click colour match and hover over the other clip part of this multi cam clip nothing happens and the 'apply match' button remains greyed out.
I can colour match the individual cuts back in normal time line but of course I don't want to waste time doing it to every single clip/cut.
Why won't it let me colour correct in angle editor?
The mouse turns into a mini camera like icon when I hover over the clip i want to match to.
    Any ideas?

I have spent the better part of today searching for solutions to this very same issue.
Tom - I realize how awesome you are to this community - and have learned a great deal from you - but this link you posted has the same question posed but NOT answered -- there seems to be no solution.
I have recreated this same issue.
I can color match two clips in a timeline -- but cannot get the same exact work flow to work in the multi-cam clip.
Basically it all works as expected right up until I click the clip I want to match -- when I do that - nothing happens and the apply match blue button stays greyed out.
This is posted all over the forums at Creative Cow and here with no real solution.
Surely something has happened to cause this on my part but I cannot figure out what.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

  • Multicam only showing one angle in project, fine in angle editor

As per the title really - the clip seems okay in the angle editor, but when I drag it into the project timeline, all angles apart from the primary are black.
I've tried copying the project, deleting the clip and re-adding it and nothing seems to work.
Any hints? I'm using the latest version of the Trial (10.0.0.8)

Hmm. I restarted FCPX to take the pictures and it seems to be working fine now! I'm not honestly sure why. One possibility is copying the multicam clip worked, and I inserted the wrong one into my timeline. But in any case it seems like the original problem is resolved. Thank you for your help!

  • Selecting Multiple Clips from Same Angle in Multicam Project

I edit motor sport events using up to 8 camera angles. Once I have edited the multicam I will generally reduce the overall audio level of the entire multicam edit. Invariably certain camera positions will have a higher audio level than others. In FCP 7 I would adjust the audio of one such clip angle, copy the clip, then simply cmd+f and input the name of the angle clips I want to adjust, then paste attributes and select audio as the attribute I want to adjust.
In FCP X I cannot find a way of doing this..... It appears I have to scroll along the timeline and cmd select each clip.... which is a nonsense. I should be able to select every clip of one particular angle. Am I missing something? This should be really easy to select every clip from one particular angle, but I have yet to find a way to do it and it is vital I can do this to save time. Nothing in the help files.

You can't select all the individual clips in the multicam edit.... All of the clips in the multicam are titled the same way...." Multicam xxxxxx". If they appeared as Angle 1, Angle 2, Angle 3 etc. You could select the individual angles as I need to do, but they are not listed that way.
To adjust the audio in the angle editor so that the audio from each camera was the same maximum db level, I would need to be able to "normalise" the audio from each angle to, for example -18db. In FCP X they have removed the normalise audio feature, which is such a nuisance As I used that a lot in FCP 7 to get audio to max at the required level. I can't adjust the audio in one angle until I have them edited side by side and can see the difference in db between them.
    Any other ideas?

    Hi,
I'm using 10.0.7. It's like snapping won't turn off. Instead ,if i use the keyboard to nudge the clips, there's no problem. I am using that at the moment.
    1. when i try to drag
    2. when i nudge:
    3. snapping is off.
    Thanks,

  • Is it possible to change multicam angle property? Or add video to what is seen as a audio angle?

I'm getting footage from overseas and first I was sent just the audio files, so I assumed i could just put the audio files into a multicam clip angle and started keywording and favoriting the new clip, which i did.  Now I've received the video files.  as per normal, I added an angle from the triangle drop-down menu, and tried adding the video but it won't let me.  Using an "insert edit" I get a message "You are combining audio and video clips in an audio-only angle. You cannot add video clips to existing audio-only angles."
The issue seems to be that if the first angle you create only gets audio files added to it, and you then use that angle to add another angle from the triangle drop-down, it forces that new angle to be audio only, and it won't accept video. I've confirmed this with separate tests.
I could start the multicam clip from scratch and add a video clip first, but trying not to lose all the keywording work (which was a lot).  There doesn't seem to be any way to change angle properties or to add a new angle that isn't audio-only by default.
    any suggestions much appreciated

Just click on the little triangle in the Angle Editor and choose "Add Angle". Now drag your video clip into the new angle.
Synchronization, though, is another matter. All in all, you'll probably be better served by creating a new mulicam clip, by way of which you'll get everything properly synched.

  • Angle Editor Not Showing Up in FCPX

    Hi,
I'm running FCPX 10.0.7 and am having difficulties with my multicam clip.
It's in the timeline and for some reason I simply cannot get it to open in the angle editor. I ctrl-click the multicam sequence and select "Open in Angle Editor". For some reason, it simply won't open up. I just click it and nothing happens. The multicam sequence is inside a compound clip i created. I tried copying to a new project and got nothing. Also tried breaking apart the compound clip and still nothing.
If somebody knows a way to fix this, that'd be amazing. Thanks

Try opening the multicam clip in the event browser. Should update to 10.0.8.

  • Beachballing when blading in the angle editor

In one of my libraries, whenever I blade a clip in any of the multicam clips opened in the angle editor, I get a beach ball and see messages that one or more projects are being loaded into the timeline. (I am able to make adjustments to the settings for HyColour Pro in the angle editor without setting off the beach ball.) Eventually I have to force quit. I've trashed my preferences and as well as the flexolibraries to no avail. Suggestions, please!

    Hi John,
sorry to say - but I'm of no help here:
I never have seen such a Multicam-timeline as yours!
You have 3 cams/angles, close. side and far, easy  - but the 'extracted' (why that??) audio-tracks do not correspond with the video tracks (by length, split, whatever) ...
For me it looks like, like someone  tries to re-enact 'track based editing' by abusing the MC-angle editor ... what it isn't meant for, nor is it necessary ...
The  usages I know-of, are very, very easier:
you synch angles. And get 'one' clip.
    switch back into your project
you edit the clip there. in terms of: cut it into pieces an re-arranges them. e.g. cut a long performance into parts, or shorten a 70min soccer-game into a 8min report (what I do weekly).
while doing so, MC supports you by keeping an audio-track and edit just the video. (e.g. music-video)
… or keeping a video and just edit the audio. (e.g. … no real-life example at hand , perhaps: one person is shown but many others ask questions from the off)
… or edit a + v but keep all tracks in synch (e.g. an interview with 2 persons in on)
But I have no idea, why you edit in the angle-viewer? Any why you extract the audio of the clips?? And why you want to get everything out of synch by editing audio and video differently?? (that is the nature, the purpose of MC: to keep things IN synch!) ...
you have seen these three four podcasts?
MacBreak Studio - Episode 153: Multi-cam Editing; Sync
MacBreak Studio - Episode 154: Multi-cam Editing; Edit
MacBreak Studio - Episode 155: Multi-cam Editing; Trim

and, yes, possible FCPX' data-base got corrupted on your accident ...

  • Full screen Angle Editor?

Does anyone know if this is possible?
I work off a 13" screen and when have 7+ angles to work with in multicam it can be frustrating - is there a way to just have the angle editor take up the whole screen or at least more of it (without adjusting the size of the clip)?
    Many thanks

I do mean the Angle Editor... when you have multiple angles to move and sync. I want to have the full screen of different angles so easier to move them around and arrange them better
You can enlarge the height reserved for the timeline quite a bit - up tp about two thirds of the screen height - by dragging. This way more angles can be seen at once without reducing their height.
This of course will make the viewer (and browser area, if you have not hidden it) smaller, but you can't make an omelet without breaking eggs.
