Slide Show Weirdness

I created and burned a slide show with backing narration and music. I successfully burned it to DVD after I saved it in the proper way. I went back into Organizer a few weeks later, opened in up and all that's left of it is the red background color on everything. The thumbnails, main picture, and even the zoom thumbnails off to the right. No music, narration, no nothing. What the heck happened?!

suggest that in the Organizer, you do a File > Catalog > Recover
as a first step. It does a general catalog cleanup; whether it will help this specific problem I do not know, but the Catalog does contain information about the contents of the slide show creation.

  • Imported slide show movie looks weird and flickering

I exported a slide show of high rez photos out of Lightroom as a MP4 movie @1080 and inserted it in to my final Cut X movie and most of the slides have areas of  the photo that are flickering back and forth. Seems like it might be the areas with a lot of detail. is there a fix for this.

Under "Effects" drop "Broadcast Safe", onto the slide show, and see if that helps.
Tom is right, do not make them MPEG4 first, export out as a .MOV file.

  • A How To: Create a Widescreen High Definition Slide Show from the Organizer

[EDIT] I just tried another one and, weirdly, that produced an output with black bars around all four sides! So maybe this 'how to' is not 100%.  I have considered deleting the post altogether but, as it does still produce a superior slideshow quality file than the standard ones provided with Elements,  I've decided to leave it with this edit added at the top for additional info.[END_EDIT]
In answering a question in another forum I found a nice quick way to create proper widescreen high definition slide shows from just the Elements Organizer. Apologies if this is 'old news' to readers, but I've not seen this described elsewhere so I thought I'd share it.
The Organizer Slide Show creator, if not wanting to edit in PRE, provides a small set of Windows Media Player profiles to create .wmv files. But the best of these goes only to 1024x768 (a 4:3 monitor resolution setting). I've noticed, but never paid much attention to, that at the bottom of the Slide Size box there is a 'Browse for more' option that lets you search for additional Windows Media Encoder profiles. Investigation showed me that I can download the Windows Media Encoder software from Microsoft and create my own profiles. But even further investigation showed  me that someone had already done this! I've tested their full HD profile and it works just fine (1920x1080).
So if you are just after a straightforward slide show (i.e. not needing PRE features) but want it displayed on your Full HD TV set here is what you do:
Download the HD Profiles from http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/236895-hd-profiles-for-windows-movie-maker/. There's also a couple of useful SD sizes there as well. Save them somewhere you can easily find them.
Create your slide show in the Organizer. Obviously use appropriately sized images for HD. There's little point outputting an HD wmv file using low resolution and/or 4:3 aspect ratio images.
Save and Output your slide show.
In the output dialog ('Save As a File') scroll down to the bottom of Slide Size and select 'Browse for more ...'.
Browse to the file you downloaded in step 1 and click Open.
Click OK and your Widescreen HD .wmv file is prepared.
Here's a Gspot analysis of my test output file. As you can see it is an HD file with a 16:9, square pixel, aspect ratio.
    Ta Da!

You did not mention a specific Premiere Elements Elements Organizer combo for this, so for now I will address this from the version 11, not Windows Movie Maker, perspective if I need to get version specific.
    .prx
The Browse for More is a well known route and does offer at least one Adobe profile for 1280 x 720 16:9. I am not sure where you came up with the lesser resolution,1024 x 768 that you mentioned. The Windows Media profiles have existed for several versions of Elements Organizer. Those Adobe ones that you do not see under Output Save As A File Movie (.wmv), can be found in the Windows 7 or 8 64 bit path
    Local Disc C
    Profile Files (x86)
    Adobe
    Elements 11 Organizer
    Assets
    Locale
    en_US
    tv_profiles
in the tv_profiles Folder are included the .prx files
    .....10. 640 x 480 Enhanced Definitions
    .....12. 852 x 480 Widescreen Enhanced Definition
    .....14 1280 x 720 Widescreen High Definition
A homemade 1920 x 1080 16:9 30 frames per second .prx has long been sought but not that easily produced by many using with the Windows Media Encoder Editor. Apparently you have found one online, and it does get accepted into the Premiere Elements 11 Browse for More choices. And, if you do a gspot readout for the wmv output from Elements Organizer 11, it will display all the "right" properties that you hoped for and that are shown in your screenshot.
The bottom line, why bother with the wmv slideshow? If you take your original photos and size them for 1920 x 1080 16:9, use them in the Elements Organizer 11 Slideshow Editor (Crops used in preferences), use the Edit with Premiere Elements Editor command, what you get in Premiere Elements 11 is full and good in all regard. Have you tried it?
I can see your interest if this is HD going to HD (AVCHD on DVD or Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc, but I do not see this for an Elements Organizer Slideshow that is going to DVD-VIDEO widescreen.
    More later.

  • Making small photos larger to be used in slide show

I am using Photoshop elements 10 with windows 7 on my Toshiba laptop.
I am trying to make a slide show of photos for my brother's funeral. The photos will be shown on a screen at the church and on a TV monitor at home. I was used to Photoshop 4, but had purchased but not really used Photoshop Elements 10 and I need help.  I am about 1000 miles away from home so I cannot go back to try to using Photoshop 4 which is not on this laptop.  I don't think I want to change (i.e. resample) the pixels, etc.
I have put into order all of the photos.  However,  the photos are of varying sizes.  The photos taken digitally are fine.  However, I have a lot of photos take a long time ago for like 3X3 or 2X3, i.e. like in the 50's - 90's, which were scanned. Then provided to me in a variety of ways. Coming to me they are small on the page. ie like in one corner. I am not trying to shrink these photos.  I am trying to resize them larger.  And probably get rid of most of the white background.
Quite honestly,  I think grief is fogging my brain.  I had tried to look at the tutorials but they did not work when I tried it on a sample photo.  Please help!

Image> Resize> Image Size is the way to go. You may need to resample though. I don't recall what resampling algorithms are in v10, but in v12 'Bicubic Smoother' is recommended for enlargements.
I also have a fallback Scott Kelby (a prolific Photshop / Photoshop Elements author) tip from an early version of PSE that recommended gradual upscaling by 10% at a time to avoid 'jaggies'. It sounds weird but it often works.
Note that for screen display you don't need high pixel per inch counts. 72 or 96 are typical common ppi resolutions.

  • Slide Show ERROR, Internal software\Vobulator\BlockPlanner\.cpp Line 217

I'm putting together a slide show DVD. There are a total of 7 slide shows containing 480 pictures. All pictures are jpg's about 1000X1600 pixels and 500KB-700KB each. I have 3 menus for navigation. Not all of the chapter menu buttons point to a "slide show", some of them point to a picture inside certain slide shows according to my client's requests. (example, slide show 1 contains 70 pictures. Chapter 1 points to "slide show 1" Chapter 2 points to "slide show 1 photo 50"). All slide shows are linked so that when the first slide show is over, it will automatically "end action" to the next slide show etc... All my settings are typical. NTSC 4:3 SD 720X480 progressive.
There are NO video files in my DVD at all. No timelines at all. No audio at all.
The Symptoms/problem that I'm getting is this, when I try to Preview my DVD and ALSO when I try to build my DVD, the build will go through and "build the slide shows" then after it does that, this will come up
I've read some of the previous posts (one of them is in French for cryin out loud. Had to use Bing translator and it sounds all weird). What I can gather is this,
Re: internal software error: .\Vobulator\BlockPlanner\BlockPlanner.cpp, line 217
I found out it was due to selecting an image file as the video layer
in a menu, causes the error everytime. I just paste the image in with
'edit in photoshop' instead now. But thanks."
Another person said just about the same thing... The only problem is, I have no idea what this means. I don't know what it means to "select an image file as the video layer in a menu..."
    Hardware/software is as follows:
    custom build:
    i5 processor (4 core) 2.6ghz
    8 GB RAM 1333MHz
    300GB C: drive (2X150 GB 10K RPM Raptors)
    1.2TB D: drive (2X7,200 RPM 640GB WD's)
    Burner is LG Super multi
secondary burner is Sony Commercial Blu-Ray burner
Video card is Saphire Build (Radeon 5450 PCI-E 16X)
    Windows 7 X64 Pro
All Adobe is CS5 Production package.
If I'm leaving anything out, please let me know.
HELP! and Thanks. I'd really love to fix this without rebuilding the whole DVD. Take long time.

  • Slide Show Screen Saver Superimposed Images Flag or Ball -- Bug?

    Hi,
I have searched and found two other archived questions on this topic, but no real answers. Please help!
I have the screen saver set to do a slide show from the Pictures folder, where I have lots of family photos. This works fine, but about every 10th photo or so, it shows the picture, and the next image is the same photo, with a weird low-res ("jagged edges"), blown-up (full-screen), icon-like image in the middle, superimposed upon my image. It's usually circular, often has a national flag or comic scheme to it, sometimes has a face, and always has effects to make it look round like a ball, which it usually is in shape (though sometimes it's not circular). When I look, my images have not been altered recently and don't seem affected, so the problem seems to reside in the system, right?
I'm not a techie but I have used Mac since 1985 and remember reading several years back in one of the Mac mags about such a problem -- whether termed a trojan or whatever. I do have all my old Mac data and apps in a folder on my mini, so it's possible it could have been pulled over from my last Mac and a remnant of some prior vulnerability. But I've never seen this behavior before OSX, neither Norton nor ClamXav finds a problem, and I can't seem to find ref to that article by net searching or here. What causes this, and how can I solve it? It really bothers my mother-in-law to see pix of her grandkids with weird flags superimposed on them, and I'm wondering if this is some Mac problem with more serious consequences not yet discovered by Norton or ClamXav. Thanks.
P.S. Here's the text of one of the archived messages:

Whenever the slide show runs from my pictures out of iphoto on my screen saver, other pictures appear occasionally on top of my pictures. They are usually other country flags or weird shapes with jagged edges. Any idea how to keep this from happening or where these other pictures are coming from? Thanks.
    Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The problem is not with the screensaver but rather that the Pictures folder insists on having the iChat flags alias inside it. Since the screensaver recognizes aliases I have moved all my photos out of the "Pictures" folder and into another folder called "Pictures not screensaver". This is because the screensaver will show ALL pictures in the Pictures folder regardless of how embarassing they are. That leaves the Pictures folder for just aliases to pictures or folders of pictures. This allows me to control exactly what pictures are shown on the screensaver. It is an area of OSX that needs some improvement.
Regarding the superimposed images, that is normal. Those iChat icons are transparent, while JPGs are not transparent. Screensaver piles newer pictures on top of older pictures. If it piles transparent images such an GIF or PNG on top of previous pictures they may be transparent and cause an alarming effect.
I have imagined this feature could be used in some cool way but have never seen anyone do it. For example, nice JPG backgrounds with semi-transparent PNGs on top with zooming animals. I suspect Apple will introduce such a screensaver in 10.5.

  • Protected song used in slide show?

  • Best codec for slide show?

I'm making some slide shows in Motion 3 w/ the CoreMelt Image Flow plugins. The slide show also has a moving background and sporadic live type fonts. These slide shows will be presented on a 46" HDTV. What is the best codec to use to maintain quality, but not waste space and minimize rendering time. FWIW The original pictures are TIFFs.

In the olden days, we'd print to tape and play the tape. End of story. But if you want to use DVDSP, you've got lots of work ahead. Your delivery will be MPEG2 which is awful and requires careful tweaking of all compression settings. MPEG2 is not pretty on big sets.
Lots of patience and research and experimentation, there is no magic formula, although there is a wealth of information on the Net and locally available in your DVDSP manual.
If you don't have time to work through the weirdly interrelated variables, just use the defaults all the way down the line, lower your expectations.

  • Pictures in iDVD slide show keep auto adjusting

    Hi,
I'm knew to iDVD. I am a professional photographer and prior to iDVD used another piece of software to create DVD slideshows.
I created my first iDVD slide show, and encountered a weird issue. The only transition I'm using is a dissolve; it seems that at the time the slide show was being rendered, images were somehow being "auto adjusted" for exposure. The images come on the TV, then they automatically adjust for exposure; iDVD attempts to make lighter images dark and darker images lighter. It is annoying. Anyone know how to turn this "auto exposure" adjustment off?
I looked everywhere for help on this issue: I.E. turn off "auto adjust", but to no avail.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply...
Question: How do I turn on or turn off "auto adjust?"
I didn't quit and then restart...
The images are on the higher res side.
but again, where is the "auto adjust" setting located?

  • How to get iPhoto slide show .mov to YouTube?

I've created a slide show in iPhoto which I want to upload to YouTube.
It is created as a movie, .mov 45 mb
I thought I could load it directly to YouTube, but apparently I have to convert it. Can someone tell me how to do the conversion?
YouTube says the preferred formats for video are H.264, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 preferred.
    Thanks for your assistance,
    Jeanie

    Thanks, Larry,
I've downloaded this software -- great tool.
However, I still am unable to upload to YouTube. I exported the mov to create an MPEG-4. It plays perfectly on my computer, but I still get an error message when trying to upload to YouTube.
There is another weird thing that has been happening, which might be the problem or a clue to the problem.
In iPhoto, my first slide is a title screen. However, I noticed that after I uploaded the mov to Audio Acrobat, a black slide precedes the Title slide. I thought maybe something happened at Audio Acrobat (haven't taken the time to call them). I have this video playing at one of my web sites, and there is a black slide at the beginning.
OK, so back to this .... the same thing happens when I open the iPhoto file in MPEG Streamclip. It starts with a black slide rather than the title slide.
To test to see if a black slide got added in iPhoto, I use the back arrow with the title screen visible and the last slide shows. In other words, iPhoto is not showing a black slide.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Jeanie

  • Why does slide show play photos with jagged or distorted images?

This is weird. When I start a slide show, the photos immediately become distorted as they go from one transition to another. It's almost like the entire photo frame becomes "shattered" in several large pieces. Sometimes, when hitting the pause button, part of the photo is fine while the other part has lines all the way through it, obscurring that part of the photo. When playing music, there is no alteration in quality of the music; everything is normal.
    What's going on here?
    G4 Dual 450   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi j4net,
Have you tried a different transition? It could be your 450 computer is not up to speed. (just a guess)

  • Instant Slide Show resetting

When I start a slide show for a new album it requires me to set theme, music and settings.  Even though I do NOT check the box "use as default settings" on any of these tabs, when I hit the play button for an instant slideshow on any album where I have previously played an instant slide show, it reverts back to and starts immediately playing using the prior settings.  What am I doing wrong?

It can be done but it's more than a one step process. First go to Toad's Cellar and download these two files:
Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
Save PDF to iPhoto 200 DPI.workflow.zip
Unzip the files and place in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder and reboot.
Next go into the book and start a print process:
1 - go to the View All Pages mode in the book.
2 - type Command+P to start the print process.
3  - click on the PDF button and select "Save PDF to iPhoto".
4 - select either of the files above (300 dip is used for photos to be included in a book that will be ordered and 200 for slideshows, etc.).
5 - in the window that comes up enter an album name or select an existing album and hit the Continue button.
That will create a 200 or 300 dpi jpeg file of the item being printed and import it into iPhoto.
6 - immediately rename the images in order with the Batch Change ➙ Title to Text  ➙ Page with Append checked. This will let you keep the pages in order if they get mixed up for any reason as their original titles are really weird and not in any order.
6 - select the images of the book and create a slideshow.  You can set the theme and transition and add music to it if so desired.  This demo page has such a book converted to an iWeb slideshow. It will give you an idea what the page images will look like: iPhoto Book as an iWeb Slideshow
Note:  I use this method to create an iDVD slideshow of each book I create and give as a gift.  This allows several viewers to view the book at one time on a TV set. iP05 - Creating an iDVD Slideshow From an iPhoto Book

  • Help? Dvd Studio Pro 3 (Slide show) Glitch?

I'm new to mac's, and am currently in the process of upgrading at work to the computer editing side of things, but I'm having problems with creating a slide show in DVD SP3.
My system i'm creating the slide show on is a Power Mac G5, OS 10.4.5
The problem is that in the simulator, everything seems to be fine with how it transitions through the images (I'm using standard dissolves)... but, when I take the burnt dvd and play it on dvd burner/players (normal units with the tv, I've tried 3 dvd players so far), I get some weird shifting in the images, so it plays fine for a second or two, then looks like it's whacked out of focus slightly. It seems random to me... My first thought was that it had something to do with the dissolves... but sometimes it starts right in the middle of the image.
(I'd tried finding this exact problem on the forum, but am still baffled.) I tried saving the slide show as a track as well, but it still does it. The weird thing, is that on some systems it seems worse than others. However because this is something my work is offering to customers, I am left with trying to find some way of fixing this problem.
    Any help is greatly appreciated...
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

As drew suggested, if your having issues with the slideshow side of DVD SP, then bring your slides into Final Cut Pro and assemble them there, (with the transistions of your choice.
Export them out as a self-contained Quicktime movie and encode that movie into a Mpeg2 file. Import that file into DVD SP, (author your project in DVD SP and burn to disk.) All of the issues with things not looking the way they should, will have gone away.
Apple really hasn't dealt with the scalling issues in DVD SP, which is what is causing the shifts, in the transistions of Slideshow presentations. You will also see this shifting issue, when creating your own tumbnail buttons, using Mpeg 2 movie footage (from your project) and let DVD SP scale it to the button size your created, (it just looks wrong.)
This is why most of this scalling is done outside of DVD SP, in other programs and then brought into DVD SP.

  • Glitches in Aperture slide show playback

I am using my MacBook Pro to present a 38 minute Aperture (3.3.2) slideshow with a projector. My slide show includes a few video clips and overall the images and video are sized at 1280x720. The show has about 40 audio clips of mostly narration but also some music. Mostly the show runs very well and I think it's great. Occasionally there are glitches in the playback. Video stops moving during a transition (1 second dissolve) or the last word in an audio clip will be cut off. This is the most important issue to fix. Some image transitions stutter a bit before continuing as usual.
The weird thing is that these problems are not consistent. They don't always happen at the same place. I am wondering if I might be taxing the limits of the system. I make sure to shut off everything not needed, such as any other applications, unneeded menubar monitoring items, etc. The show runs perfectly in the preview window or just on the MacBook Pro screen. It is just when I connect it to a projector or TV that I have problems.
If I run Activity Monitor during the show preview I can see Aperture usually running over 85%, often over 95% and it shows virtual mamory usage over 1.35 GB. I just have 4MB of RAM. Do you think not enough RAM is the issue?
Another thing I notice is that I have 2 types of video clips in the show. I have completed time-lapse videos, usually about 1.5 minutes, and these run perfectly, audio & visual. In other words these are the product of video export from a completed video project. The other video parts are short video clips from my video library, usually less than 10 seconds, some with built-in audio. These are regular QT movies. Most were 1080 HD clips converted to 1280x720 when I found the 1080p clips wouldn't play well. Is there any particular type of video clip that requires more intense work on the part of the processor in order to play well? What type would be best? Maybe a lower quality setting? I probably used a high quality setting.

I'm a bit surprised to see no responses to my question. But for anyone else who looked at the question, here's how things progressed. When I am presenting I am doing so directly within Aperture and not by playing a slideshow movie. However, I learned that Aperture makes the necessary resolution previews at the time of rendering the movie so I made a slideshow movie even though I had no use for it. After I exported a slide show movie the show seems to run better within Aperture. Less glitches, etc. I present this show twice a week at Fundy National Park during July & August so getting it running flawlessly is my goal..
The next step was increasing my RAM to 8GB and this helped another level. Now the show runs quite well. No more dropped words at the end of audio clips. Almost all of the image transitions work well. It is just when going through movie sections that playback sometimes stutters a bit.

  • How can I control the music that plays during Apple TV photo slide shows?

I don't want to make my parents listen to Breaking Benjamin music as they watch my photo slide shows on Apple TV. Need something more sedate. But if a B.B. song is in my iTunes music library, it is a candidate for random selection as background music for my slide shows. How do I control what music plays during Apple TV photo slide shows?

What I find is really silly, is the fact the music video's are listed under that artists albums in the Music menu. And when you go into the video 'album' (called 'Unknown' unless you change it) there is an option to shuffle the tracks. Clicking this just results in an error message. So, they should either remove that option if it is a video album, or, better yet, GET IT TO WORK. So silly of them to omit this.
