Slide shows and pic Quality

Hi, all:
Asking for advice, etc: I have been creating a slide show of a batch of old photos inherited from my mother. I want to share these photos, some of which are over 100 years old and have done the following:
1. Scan them in greyscale on my Epson Perfection 3490 scanner
2. Process them using Photoshop Elements to crop and tweak for clarity. I have also used iPhoto which can do an equal job. Just prefer PSE because of flexibility in cataloging and filing,
3. Create an iMovie project (which is why I am on this forum), just dragging and dropping the photos onto the clip viewer/frames.
4. Since I want to create different versions to distribute to other relatives, I have created a base slide show with pics common to all families in one iM project and then several other separate iM projects with photos specific to other families.
5. I plan to use Roxio's Toast Titanium to burn the DVD versions of these rather than iDVD since I won't have to combine the base set with the individual family sets into a larger iM project. In Toast, all one has to do is drag the individual projects onto the working area, and Toast will create a DVD incorporating all the projects. The disadvantage is that you have limited abilities to edit, etc. as compared to iDVD. But I am not looking for fancy here so it works for me.
I am putting this here to solicit other advice, recommendations on process, etc as well as share my process. I am particularly interested in tips on maintaining clarity and quality of the pics which is why I am using iMovie vs going to the slide show function on iDVD. my past experience is the quality seems to be maintained better in iMovie.
Any opinions on that or any hints, especially iMovie vs iDVD?

I recently put together a slideshow of several hundred images (both B&W and color) and used FotoMagio. It has more features and gave me better quality than iMovie/iDVD. I then used the movies it produced in iDVD.
Other like Photo to Movie.
Both have trial versions available.

  • I would like to create a slide show and then burn to a DVD.  I may be interested in adding music.  Should I use iPhone, iMovie or a simple Powerpoint?

I am going to be creating a slide show and then burning it to a couple of DVDs.  I have used PPT in the past for simple slide shows for speaking engagements, but I am interested in adding music to this slide show.  What is the best/easiest application to use?  iMovie, iPhoto or Powerpoint?
    Thanks!
    Mike

Is it your intention to create video DVDS that can be played on TV sets via DVD players?  If so you'll need a video DVD authoring application like iDVD.
Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  For iPhoto 9.4.3 and earlier select Size = Medium or Large. For iPhoto 9.5 and later selct 480p.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

Hi all.  I can’t tell you how to solve your iCloud 3.x issues.  Heck, I don’t think they’re even solvable.
But if you had a previous version of iCloud that was working correctly then I can definitely tell you how to solve the “iCloud Photo Stream is not syncing correctly to my Windows 7 PC” problem.  …without even a re-boot.
Log out of iCloud 3.0 and uninstall it.
Open My Computer and then open your C:\ drive.  Go to Tools/Folder Options and click on the View tab.  Select the “Show hidden…” radio button and click on OK.
    Open the Users folder.
    Open your user folder
    Open ProgramData (previously hidden folder)
Open the Apple folder – not the Apple Computer folder.
    Open the Installer Cache folder
In Details view sort on Name
Open the folder for the newest entry for iCloud Control Panel 2.x – probably 2.1.2.8 dated 4/25/2013
Right click on iCloud64.msi and select Install.
When finished, the synching between iCloud and your PC will be back to working perfectly as before the 3.0 fiasco.  The pictures will be synched to the same Photostream folder as before the “upgrade”.  Now all you need to do is wait until Apple/Microsoft get this thing fixed and working before you try the 3.x upgrade again.
I think the iCloud 3.0 software was written by the same folks who wrote healthcare.gov with the main difference being that healthcare.gov might eventually be made to work.
For those of you who hate to go backwards, think of it as attacking to the rear.  Which would you rather have, the frustration of no synching or everything working on an older version?
    Good luck…

  • Has anyone had this issue. I created my song from itunes to garage band, took my iphotos to create a slide show and when I burned to idvd there are several pauses during playback?

    Hi
SlideShow in iDVD has a 99 photo limit - more than this and all sorts of error occures.
One can have more than one SlideShow on a DVD = X times 99 photos.
or assemble SlideShows in a movie editor (no limit at least not under 650 photos)
(only limit is Time in iDVD (movie time + MENU time --- 60 min or 120 min on SL-DVD and about twice on DL.-DVD )
    I use
    • iMovie up to HD6 - or -
    • FinalCut any version
As they will give a better quality than iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 can do.

  • IWeb site loses functionality (Slide Show and Click to Enlarge)

I have three iWeb sites, to which I have added Slide Show and Click to Enlarge features on Photo pages. They are all published via web.mac.com.
Two of them lost these abilities after about a week, although the cursor still changes from an arrow to a hand when passing over Start Slideshow and the various pictures. The other site still functions normally.

I am trying to add music to my slide show and I get this error:  The selected file cannot be played because your system does not have the required compressor/decompressor (codec) installed.  I went to the Adobe site and downloaded a codec program, and restarted but still got the same error.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you - I followed the instructions attached to your response, and I deleted the artwork from the three songs that I want to use, however, when I drag them into Photoshop I am still getting the same error message.  I also don't see an option to convert the song to an MP3.  I tried going to File and Get Info, and there isn't an option.  I also tried right click on the song, but didn't see anything there either...?

  • Can I use an IPod to back up  Itunes, TV shows, and pics?

Can I use an IPod to back up the by Itunes, TV shows, and pics? Can I do a resotore off an IPOD? OS/X user...?
I have about 50GB or so of stuff I have purchased from Itunes and have not back it up yet. I looked into using DVD's and NAS devices, but I think I can also just get a new 80GB Ipod and use it as both a portable device and my main back up for my purchased stuff. Other files, like word and excel I back up using my .MAC I-disk, but the music and video files required much more space and bandwidth, so I have to back up localy.
If I have to do a restore, will I be able to restore off of an IPOD?

if you use the ipod in disk mode then, yes, you could use it to backup/restore files
but i'd never recommend using an ipod for this
great music player, but not something to rely on to keep your data safe
if you want a backup disk, get a dedicated external hard drive, it'll be way cheaper and a lot more reliable

Why is it taken so long and seem to stop but the activity status goes up ever so slowley???? Im using an iMac  7,1   2.4 GHz with 6GB of memory running 10.8.2 what am I doing wrong???

Rendering will take a very long time  - I once needed 6 hours for a shorter high definition movie with plenty of effects.
What theme are you using and what settings?
The "places" theme needs a good network connection.
And the finished movie will need plenty of disk space.
And the finished movie will need plenty of disk space. Have you checked the available  space on your disk?
What exactly happens when Aperture fails to render the movie? Are there any diagnostics, error messages in the console window, that relate to Aperture? Does Aperture alway stop at the same image or video clip?
if all fails, you could render your slideshow in two parts and combine the two videos on your DVD.

  • Help!  I thought I was pretty good setting up slide shows and adding music.  I'm trying to make a new slide show from a great trip to New York.  I can get theme music but no music at all from iTunes.  Checking my older slide shows, which did play music!

Help!  I thought I was pretty good setting up slide shows and adding music.  I'm trying to make a new slide show from a great trip to New York.  I can get theme music but no music at all from iTunes.  Checking my older slide shows, which did play music, it's all gone!
Problem seems to have started after updating to Mavericks.
Is there a box I need to check/uncheck?
    Any help very welcome!

Hopefully you've seen the post from Terence Devlin?  I've pasted it below.
In iTunes go File -> Library -> Organise Library -> Reorganise Library.
    Then quit and restart iPhoto.
Pity Apple didn't either warn us or set up a bug fix!

  • IMac goes into iPhoto Slide Show and won't exit unless shut down.

When I am in iPhoto it will sometimes (no patter) slip into slide show mode with music without my having done anything.  It will play the slide show over and over and not let me exit unless I shut down.  I made a slide show with music when I first got my computer and the slide show always plays this music (R.E.M. "Everybody Hurts"-no jokes please!), but the images can be of any photos I have on the computer. Last time it happened with my Last Import.  Please help as the folks at Apples could only shrug their shoulders and tell me "Wow, never heard that before."

Take a look at these slide show control keys did you try these, also click on the settings icon in the lower right corner of the slide show and make sure the repeat slide show check box is unchecked. (This applies to iPhoto 11)
    Slideshows
    Stop a slideshow
Press the Escape (esc) key, or move the mouse to show the slideshow controls, and then click the close button (X)
    Pause slideshow or resume playing
    Space bar
    Move through a slideshow manually
Press the Right Arrow or Left Arrow key

  • Can I create an iDVD slide show and keep the picture resolution high so the pictures will be HDTV quality or near HDTV quality for playback on a DVD player?

How do I create an iDVD slide show that does not compress the photos making them low-res? When I insert the iDVD I have made into a DVD player connected to an HDTV, the playback quality of the pictures are very low.  Is there a way to correct this when creatinf the iDVD?

  • IDVD slide shows and DVD ROM contents?

No problem making slide shows, but iDVD will not copy ALL of the hi-res pics, seems to have a mind of its own and drops short. ie. 3 slide shows of 100 pics each it will copy 87, 55, 85 hi-res pics only. 5 slide shows of 100 each it will copy 80, 52, 85, 88, 90 hi-res pics only. Has anybody got any ideas please.

    George,
iDVD isn't always happy about working with lots of multi-megapixel images and can't use all the quality. See iDVD 6.0 Help-Preparing images for DVD slideshows at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/17.html for information on recommended sizes. Things will go a lot faster with the smaller images mentioned in that help file.
You can always manually add content to the DVD-ROM area. See iDVD 6.0 Help - Adding files to the DVD-ROM portion of a disc at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/74.html
My recommendation: use 720x540 images for the slideshow and manually add the high res images to the DVD-ROM area.

  • Simple slide show, 8 pics disolving, repeat

I'm trying to figure out how to place (within a table cell)
an image that slowly disolves into another image - a slideshow with
5 to 10 images that loops. The identical-sized images are roughly
300x420 px. I need to just have them swap with a dissolve, then
loop - maybe 5 seconds each. This is where I am so far - not great,
    but this is the idea:

    check out this flash slide-show:
    http://webtrans1.com/demos/slide_show/slide_show_instructions.php
it is plain and simple, and loops automatically through any
number of images. You can customize it
(size, speed, background-color, images centered or
    left-alitgned, etc.)
    No controls buttons.

  • Display comments during slide show and/or DVD

This is a pre-sales question; I'm wanting an application to organize decades of family photos that will all be entered with location and comment about the photo since we were good about writing that on the back of the photos and slides.  Now, the more critical part, I'd like those comments to be displayed while viewing a slide show, or more importantly, if I write out a slide show to DVD.  On screen is not so important as I can always look at the comments manaully if I want but I want to create DVD's to send to family so they'll want to see the commands about each pic on screen.  I think Elements has all the organization features I need, just wondering if when you use it to create a photo dvd, the comments can be made visible as the dvd is viewed.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
In Photoshop Elements you can  create slideshows which can be exported as Videos or PDFs....
Captions can also be doiplayed with each slide....
I would suggest you to try trial version of PSE8 and decide if it fulfil your requirements.... It also facilitate to place your Photographs on Map and then locate througha Map view... Try it out before buying....
