Sliders over opacity and other variable slider settings in appearance palette

just like Photoshop, for a lot of controls, one can hover over the word like "opacity"in layer palette and slide to adjust opacity
was hoping for the same in AI, for opacity and other variable sliders in AI.
saves clicking opacity and clicking the slider, then sliding, 3 steps instead of 1.

This is another feature I miss from CS5. I would request as well that the sliders be put back into the illustrator CS6 palattes as they were in earlier versions. In the general illustrator discussions area there is a stream entitled "AI CS6 took away the opacity sliders" which discusses this and mentions just using the arrow keys but the point is made that sometimes as a designer we are looking for a visual relationship which is much easier and quicker to do with the sliders. (Time is always a factor.)

I had restored my iPhone 5 to factory settings and that cleared the problematic "Other" problem. Flash forward a couple weeks and the problem has once again resurfaced.
I tried updating iTunes and iOS to the newest versions and the problem still persists.
I'm officially ready to switch to Windows Phone or Android now...

How to get photoshop to go back to default brushes and other kinds of settings?

I was messing around with phothoshop when I first installed, it and when I opened it again, I noticed that it saves what you last did, with brushes and pens and other things that you probably use a lot. So my question is, how do I get it to go back to the first things that were selected? Does this make any sense?

Expanding %1 and other variables from a command

Hi!
I need a simple command to open a specific file (rasphone.pbk) with whatever is the default program for opening text files.
What I have so far:
(Get-ItemProperty -Path 'Registry::HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\txtfile\shell\open\command').'(Default)'
Which gives me this output:
"C:\Program Files\Sublime Text 2\sublime_text.exe" "%1"
It will be executed for different machines/users. Some may only have the default notepad.exe, others may have different editors.
So I now need to replace the %1 with
%AppData%\Microsoft\Network\Connections\Pbk\rasphone.pbk
while also expanding %AppData%. The default command is
%SystemRoot%\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE %1
where I would need to expand %SystemRoot% as well.
It should be a 1-liner if possible because the command is stored in a database. If I need a script file I have to find a way to distribute that file to each client as well... and for simply opening a file that would be a bit too much.
If it's easy in CMD that would be even better, but I thought Powershell is a capable tool for doing stuff like that in a simple way. I just can't wrap my head around it...

Use Exanded string to store variable reference in the registry.
You can do the easily with Regedit. You can export the key and import it on any machine with a click of the file.
Indeed I can replace just the %1 and let the other variables be replaced by cmd.
I actually got it working now without a script file (I really want to avoid using a file). this is the UI I have to work with:

It is not pretty... calling cmd to call PowerShell and piping the output back to cmd to execute the command.
I just can't find a way to execute the command including the parameters from a single string in PowerShell.
If you can think of a better way please let me know...

Pros and Cons of using REST over JMS (and other technologies)

Hey all,
I am working on a project where we were using JMS initially to send messages between servers. Our front end servers have a RESTful API and use JEE6, with EJB 3.1 entity beans connected to a mysql database and so forth. The back end servers are more like "agents" so to speak.. we send some work for them to do, they do it. They are deployed in GlassFish 3.1 as well, but initially I was using JMS to listen to messages. I learned that JMS onMessage() is not threaded, so in order to facilitate handling of potentially hundreds of messages at once, I had to implement my own threading framework. Basically I used the Executor class. I could have used MDBs, but they are a lot more heavyweight than I needed, as the code within the onMessage was not using any of the container services.
We ran into other issues, such as deploying our app in a distributed architecture in the cloud like EC2 was painful at best. Currently the cloud services we found don't support multi-cast so the nice "discover" feature for clustering JMS and other applications wasn't going to work. For some odd reason there seems to be little info on building out a scalable JEE application in the cloud. Even the EC2 techs, and RackSpace and two others had nobody that understood how to do it.
So in light of this, plus the data we were sending via JMS was a number of different types that had to all be together in a group to be processed.. I started looking at using REST. Java/Jersey (JAX-RS) is so easy to implement and has thus far had wide industry adoption. The fact that our API is already using it on the front end meant I could re-use some of the representations on the back end servers, while a few had to be modified as our public API was not quite needed in full on the back end. Replacing JMS took about a day or so to put the "onmessage" handler into a REST form on the back end servers. Being able to submit an object (via JAXB) from the front servers to the back servers was much nicer to work with than building up a MapMessage object full of Map objects to contain the variety of data elements we needed to send as a group to our back end servers. Since it goes as XML, I am looking at using gzip as well, which should compress it by about 90% or so, making it use much less bandwidth and thus be faster. I don't know how JMS handles large messages. We were using HornetQ server and client.
So I am curious what anyone thinks.. especially anyone that is knowledgeable with JMS and may understand REST as well. What benefits do we lose out on via JMS. Mind you, we were using a single queue and not broadcasting messages.. we wanted to make sure that one and only one end server got the message and handled it.

If you're saying that JBoss and/or GlassFish no longer need that.. then how is it done? I read up on HornetQ where a request sent to one ip/hornetq server could "discover" other servers in a cluster and balance the load by sending requests to other hornetq servers. I assume this is how the JEE containers are now doing it? The problem with that to me is.. you have one server that is loaded with all incoming traffic and then has to resend it on to other servers in the cluster. With enough load, it seems that the glassfish or jboss server become a load balancer and not doing what they were designed to do.. be a JEE container. I don't recall now if load balancing is in the spec or not..I would think it would not be required to be part of a container though, including session replication and such? Is that part of the spec now?you are confusing many different types of scaling. different layers of the jee stack scale in different ways. you usually scale/load balance at the web layer by putting a load balancer in front of your servers. at the ejb layer, however, you don't necessarily need that. in jboss, the client-side stub for invoking remote ejbs in a cluster will actually include the addresses for all the boxes and do some sort of work distribution itself. so, no given ejb server would be receiving all the incoming load. for jms, again, there are various points of work to consider. you have the message broker itself which is scaled/load balanced in whatever fashion it supports (don't know many details on actual message broker impls). but, for the mdbs themselves, each jee server is pretty independent. each jee server in the cluster will start a pool of mdbs and setup a connection to the relevant queue. then, the incoming messages will be distributed to the various servers and mdbs accordingly. again, no single box will be more loaded than any other.
load balancing/clustering is not part of the jee "spec", but it is one of the many features that a decent jee server will handle for you. the point of jee was to specify patterns for doing work which, if followed, allow the app server to do all the "hard" parts. some of those features are required (transactions, authentication, etc), and some of those features are not (clustering, load-balancing, other robustness features).
I still would think dedicated load balancers, whether physical hardware or virtual software running in a cloud/VM setup would be a better solution for handling load to different tiers?like i said, that depends on the tier. makes sense in some situations, not others. (for one thing, load-balancers tend to be http based, so they don't work so well for non-http protocols.)

The MTU setting on the interface is the layer 3 packet size. In this case, the MTU is set to 1500, but the largest frame size transmitted on the interface (including layer 2 headers) is 1516. It sounds like you are experiencing another problem at the LES.

Mailbox and other printer-specific settings are saved with an Excel file

I have several users who occasionally experience this exact issue with Excel 2010. A KB article actually exists for this problem (KB:829766)
and at one point a hotfix was available. I assume this issue was "fixed" at one point however the KB article was updated in April with

I am having a similar issue: Users are saving excel documents onto a notwork share, some are using sercure print others do not use secure print. The users using secure print are saving a document with secure print selected and when others go to print it secure
prints for them. The registry edit will solve if I go to each users machine and add the registry edit, however as we add new users to the company it would be a headache managing who needs this key setup. Is there a way for people who do not want to use secure
print to not inherit these settings? I mean the easy solution is just to have users select the printer properties they want each time they print, but I have come to terms that, that will not happen despite the issues caused.

Use primtives when you just need raw values with no behavior. If you need an integer number, you'll generally use int, sometimes long, rarely short.
Use objects when you need the concepts they model--String when you want a string of text, Date when you want to represent a date, whatever class you create (Person, Student, Car, Whatever) when you need to use or manipulate the concepts they model.
Use the object wrappers for the primitives--Integer, Double, etc.--when you want to represent the number but you're using it in a context where objects are required--e.g. when adding them to a collection.

Laptop over-heats and other curious issues

I updated the bios to 2.20 on my P755-s5383 and ever since it has been getting very hot (hot enough for discomfort) and the volume buttons above the keyboard (the ones that run on the "added value package") don't work unless I open the speaker control from the tray sometimes along with the scroll function on the touchpad (the symbol comes up but it does not scroll). The fan is running fine, btw.

Setting UI60_ICON and other environment variables

Hi, I am developing using forms 6i. I tried setting the UI60_ICON environment variable from
1. The Control Panel -> System -> Advanced -> Environment Variable -> System Variables and
2. The Registry Editor -> Edit ->New -> String Value
But my icons will still not appear in my forms. Can some one help me.
I do not add the .ico extension when I use the icon name. And I also make sure the icon has been place in the path I have stated. The icon appears when I place them in the FORMS60 environment variable.

LR 5.5 double-click behavior on WB sliders (and other sliders in Basic tab)

i recently upgraded to LR 5.5 from 5.4.
sometimes i check the auto-WB recommendation by using the ability to Shift + double-click on a WB slider (in Dev. Module). (this feature was introduced in LR 5, i believe, maybe LR 4.)
before the upgrade, whether the WB sliders were already at a custom setting or still on the "as-shot" setting, you could Shift + double-click on either the Temp or Tint slider and get the "auto" recommendation. Then, you could undo and redo, toggling back and forth between the auto setting and whatever you had before that.
now, however, when i Shift + double-click, before the slider registers the double-click and produces the auto setting, it responds to the first part of the double-click. that means that FIRST it moves the slider a little one way or the other, and THEN goes to the auto setting.
this behavior makes it impossible to toggle back and forth between the auto setting and whatever it was before that. instead, it now toggles between auto and that little adjustment that was registered in the first part of the double-click.
for example:
the Temp slider is set to a custom value of 5200 on a certain photo.
i'm curious what is the auto recommendation, so i Shift + double-click on the slider.
the slider registers the first part of my double-click, moving for an instant to 5384, before understanding that i actually double-clicked and producing the auto setting.
this is annoying in any case, but it's a problem because now when i undo and redo to toggle between my custom setting (5200) and the auto recommendation, it's instead toggling between the auto and 5384. (or whatever value happened to register in the first part of the double-click.)
this changed behavior also affects the other sliders in the Basic tab where you can Shift + double-click to check an auto value. personally, i never use this feature on the other sliders, but i do use it quite a bit on the WB sliders as a step in arriving at my custom WB.
also, i just noticed that it also happens sometimes on black-and-white images, when adjusting the Black and White Mix sliders. (these sliders can also revert to their auto value if you adjust one and then Shift + double-click. this is beneficial for when you don't want to return the whole group of sliders to auto mix.
note:
i do not adjust the sliders by dragging. instead, i mouse over a slider, and use up or down arrow keys to adjust in regular increments (or Shift + arrow key for a larger increment). i find this is a much better way to work for a number of reasons, and especially with large numbers of images. if i want to make a finer adjustment, i just click in the value field of a slider and use arrow keys to go in single-unit increments. (or use Option + arrow key for a smaller-than-default increment.)
For color Temp, camera settings already use 50-degree increments (5600, 5650, 5700, etc.), so they appear in LR with those kinds of rounded numbers, never 5611 or whatever. using the arrow keys to adjust color temp also goes in 50-degree increments, and using Shift+arrow key goes in 200-degree increments. For Tint, however, the camera does use single-unit increments, like 7 or 11. the arrow key method of adjusting Tint goes in increments of 5 or 20, which for Tint is usually too broad of an adjustment.
sorry for the long post. anyone else having this problem? as someone who does a lot of toggling back-and-forth to compare things, i find this fairly small change in behavior incredibly disruptive.

{for the sake of clarity and consistency, when i say double-click on the "slider", i mean on the value-marker, the triangular point that actually moves (or what ssprengel is calling the "slider-thumb/handle" if i'm understanding him correctly)—not the range on which it moves, nor the label to the left side of the range.}
but have i gone crazy?? has the behavior not changed at all?? i could have sworn that in the past, i was double-clicking (with or w/o shift key) on the value-marker of the slider, instead of on the label as you mention (although that instruction does sound familiar now, too). this is not a rare action for me, but something i've done countless times on the WB sliders, and also on the Black and White Mix sliders to return them to their auto value.
actually—now that i think about it, i do this action a ton on the HSL sliders, also: use the arrow keys (or Shift+arrow) to adjust HSL values, which go in increments of 5 (arrow) or 20 (shift+arrow). sometimes to return to zero i use the arrow keys again, but sometimes just double-click on the slider.
Or, if i want to see a very large, imprecise adjustment, i don't use the arrow keys but just click once towards the extemes of the range: +83 or -100 or whatever. and then to return to zero, i just double-click on that same spot—meaning on the slider/value-marker, wherever it happened to land on my first click.
however, in the last couple major releases (LR4 and now LR5), i've noticed that feature doesn't work quite as well as it used to. it used to be very easy to click once, get an extreme value, then very soon afterwards double-click and return to zero. you could do it easily, without even looking carefully at the sliders (so you could look instead at the picture changing). now, however, i find that i usually have to double-click two or three times before the slider responds and goes back to zero. sometimes i have to reposition the mouse very slightly and double-click again for that action to happen (and not because my mouse strayed from the slider).
i have noticed this to be true across many changing conditions:
major releases and smaller updates of LR;
different OS (10.6.8 snow leopard through 10.7, 10.8, and 10.9 mavericks);
different machines: 2007 MBP and late 2013 rMBP;
even different mice: used to have an old Kensington mouse; now using Logitech G500s, a fairly high-end gaming mouse (even though i don't do any gaming).
when i first noticed this less-responsive behavior, i thought it was due to my mouse and/or computer being old, maybe outdated. the kensington mouseworks software didn't really work, even on the older 2007 MBP. so i chalked it up to mouse issues. but it's exactly the same with my new, much more sophisticated mouse, whose software does work on my late 2013 rMBP.
(and now, with LR5.5, there's the issue i mentioned originally, where the first part of the double-click records a value shift before LR realizes i was actually double-clicking.)
why am i bothering to say all this??
first, it's an additional problem, but similar to what i originally posted about. second, it offers (at least some) support for my original idea—that in the past, i was, in fact, double-clicking on the slider itself, not on the label, to get auto or as-shot values.
does anyone else have any thoughts on this? am i the only one who "remembers" double-clicking on the slider, not the label, to get the auto or as-shot WB, or reset HSL sliders, or return to auto values of individual sliders in Black and White Mix?

Rendering will take a very long time - I once needed 6 hours for a shorter high definition movie with plenty of effects.
What theme are you using and what settings?
The "places" theme needs a good network connection.
And the finished movie will need plenty of disk space.

What exactly happens when Aperture fails to render the movie? Are there any diagnostics, error messages in the console window, that relate to Aperture? Does Aperture alway stop at the same image or video clip?
if all fails, you could render your slideshow in two parts and combine the two videos on your DVD.

This happened first a couple of weeks before, then I did a reset and it worked. Then after 2-3 days it happened again, I updated the iOS and it worked after that. Next time it happened, I tried all possible methods, including switching to software - rotation lock on/off. The hardware when turns to off/on, shows the correct icon on the screen of the lock and unlocked state. But the rotation is not happening.

Just check again.
If you see a lock icon in the upper right corner of the screen - then the screen orientation is locked.
Try the side switch above the volume rocker first and see if that unlocks the screen. If that doesn't do it, double tap the home button and swipe to the right and look for the lock icon all the way to the left.
If the screen is unlocked but still will not rotate, reset the iPad.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
If the iPad screen still will not rotate - turn it over and gently tap it on the back a couple of times - but gently tap it. Make sure that the screen is protected.
