Slideshow Duration - Fit to Music Problem

I was very happy when Lightroom 3 Beta 1 adjusted the duration of slides to fit the length of the music. But, I noticed the feature no longer worked in Lightroom Beta 2. I was hoping that Adobe would fix the 'bug' before the final release.
I have installed the Lightroom 3 and was very disappointed that the problem is still there. I am running  Mac Pro with OS X 10.5.8. My slideshow is with about 190 slides and the music is about 19 minutes long (so the slide duration is ~ 5 sec with the Fade duration of 1.2 sec). After I selected the slides and the MP3 music, I clicked on the "Fit To Music" button under Soundtrack. I could see the duration of slide changed, which should be the case. But, the result was that the slideshow finished way ahead of the music.
Did I miss anything in my process? I have played with adjusting the 'Fade duration' before clicking the "Fit To Music" button, and I could see the Slide duration change every time. Is there a limit of number of slides in a slideshow in order for the Fit To Music feature works properly?
Thank you for your help in advance.
Stephen

I agree that it's quite bad to have a feature so blatantly not working as it's supposed to... Since I have no idea how to succesfully work around this issue in LR4 I tried other options for the slideshow feature...
FotoMagico seem solid and has additional features as individual slide duration and individual transition times... It has some quirks too... The audio fades with the slide transition at times... The biggest draw back (and maybe I haven't found good settings yet) is that the rendered 720p HD slideshow didn't look half as good as the one rendered in LR4 at pretty much the same file size...
Then I tried Aperture... Which has pretty neat slideshow functions as well... Lets you adjust the audio placement freely... But the filesize exported with the standard 720p setting was about 4 times bigger... Now doing tests what custom settings will yield acceptable quality files with acceptable filesizes.

  • Feature request : time to show identity plates in a slideshow when 'Fit to music' is selected.

When using the 'Fit to music' option in a slideshow, and with one, or both options to show identiy plates selected, then the ability to choose an independent length of time to show the identity plates would be useful. Possibly even a different length of time for the intro and ending identity plates.
At the moment if you choose 'Fit to music' the time each slide is shown is also used for the identity plates. When you only have a few images, compared to the length of the music, this means that the identity plates are shown for too long on the screen.

For that ind of precision and flexiblity make your slideshow in an app like iMovie, PhotoToMovie or Final Cut Express.

  • Slideshow music to 'fit' to slideshow duration in iMovie

    Hello all,
I am an Apple convert, and recently bought a new 24" iMac with iLife 08.
I have had problems with iDVD photo slideshows, where the music 'jumps' throughout slideshows. So I've started using iMovie for slideshows instead.
However, I can't seem to find a way to make the music 'fit' to the slideshow duration...are there any tricks for this? or would iMovie 6 HD do a better job?
I hope you someone can provide some suggestions. Thank you.

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
One of the features of im08 over other editing software is that it should do exactly what you are looking to do by you simply dropping music into the background. It should then trim the music to the length of the video and auto fade it as the video comes to an end.
Can you tell us exactly what it isn't doing for you.

  • Slideshow Music problem!!!! It doesnt work like it says it on the box.

I have put together some slideshows and i find every time there is a problem with the fit to music option when i select a track from my itunes library. If i let it run fine it works but if i press fit music to slide show then the track goes into a total slow down and even if i reselect another track it still repeats the same problem. ive tried with 20 slides to 40 slides. So at this point I am certain that this part of the program does not work properly. i see this problem all over the internet so adobe fix it please. Its a simple option so it doesnt take rocket science to press 2 buttons.. but these buttons dont work.  Selling something that doesnt work sends me rushing back to aperture. Anybody else got this problem..u bet. fire the guy who is wasting my time having to write this.

So, are you going to share the solution because I have run out of vriables to play with.
There are a couple of ways to get around this limitation.  The "right" way is a pain.  The "easy" way is potentially problematic.
Bottom line:  The transitions and slide duration boxes only allow precision down to a tenth of a second.  If your song length and slide count don't divide up to an integer of tenths of a second, you can't fix this in the UI.  If they do, it's possible the tool won't choose these properly due to roundoff error.
My suggestion is to select songs/slide counts so they do divide up into an integer number of tenths of a second (that's the problematic part) and then manually pick a slide+fade time to match that.  If you can't do that, you might need to add a tenth to one or the other from what the tool chooses, but then your show might finish just before the song does.
The "right" way is to manually edit the template, where unlimited precision (well, I suspect it's 32 bit floats or something) is allowed.  That's a pain.
Lightroom shouldn't force either solution onto you, but the 0.1s precision is currently the limitation here (not the math education of the team, a few of whom hold advanced degrees in mathematics and related fields).  Hopefully, the team will fix that problem.

  • Very annoying music problem with slideshow

I have been trying the whole afternoon to solve a perplexing problem when trying to set up a slideshow:
    Initial problem:
When selecting one or more songs, using various methods such as directly selecting the song, using a playlist from iTunes or a "custom playlist" in iPhoto slideshow music settings, iPhoto for no apparent reason when previewing, simply restarts a song before it or the slideshow have finished. This is despite choosing the "Fit to music" option in settings.
    SO
    Second much more irritating problem:
I thought I'd see what would happen if I exported it. I selected two songs, and combined those songs using all the methods listed above as well as actually creating a new iLife preview song file in garageband and even exporting the two songs into a combined .mp3 file again with garage file. I must stress that when played in Garageband, in iTunes and even with iPhoto's music preview, the two songs play perfectly one after the other with no problems. However, no matter what method or indeed file combination I use, when exporting, iPhoto causes the first song to restart a few seconds after the second one has begun resulting in them playing at the same time which as you can imagine is pretty frikking annoying and basically makes it impossible to present such a slideshow. At first I thought it was "selecting" the first song to replay but it does this even with a single .mp3 which must appear to it to be only one song, so it appears that it simply restarts the track from the beginning at a random place in the slideshow, while continuing to play the track already playing.
Anyone else experience this - I have yet to try the delete, write to CD and re-import option but this seems like a ridiculous and unacceptable thing to have to do to get something so simple to work.
    Any suggestions would be welcome.
    Thanks

Try deleting the iPhoto caches in the your User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder and the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. Reboot and try exporting again.
I'm able to export a slideshow with 3 songs without any issues except that there are long gaps between songs. Lots of dead air due to the fade out and in of the tracks.
Question: Do you have the Quicktime Player 7 installed? It's an option with Snow Leopard installation. Also when the slideshow is being exported which icon do you see in the Dock, the older Quicktime Player 7 icon or the newer QT Player 10 icon.
For several reasons I've removed the QT 10 Player and use the 7 exclusively. It have more features and, IMO, does a better job at most everything. What I'm getting at is that if the QT 10 player is exporting the slideshow that may be the problem.
If you have QT 7 then zip the QT 10 player and delete the unzipped application. Then try an export to see if you have better luck. A long shot but might work.
Some more info about QT Player 7 and it's use alone can be found in this topic: UPDATE!.

  • Slideshow "Fit to Music" in Lightroom 5

Hi, I was working on the slideshow module of Lightroom 5, added music and applied "fit to music". It worked fine during the preview. I then added more photos and changed the music, but when I applied "fit to music" after making all these changes, there was no adjustment with the timing of the new set of photos. On playback, the length of the slideshow is now longer than the (new) music I selected, making the music loop. Is there a step that I may have missed? I figured choosing a different music file and then clicking on "fit to music" would automatically change the timing (which in my case is not working). Thanks, hope to get some help on this soon. =) -ian umali

I'm not aware of a minimum amount of photos to play with music, I've tried it with 2. But I suspect something is wrong with the music you have selected, the "!" is shown if LR cannot read the mp3 file and cannot determine its length. I've seen this with some mp3's, but I cannot determine why. Have you tried a different mp3?

  • Front Row Slideshow Music Problem

    Hello:
I have been unable to change the Photo Slideshow music in Front Row. I go into iPhoto, select SlideShow and select my music, but it does not seem to save it to Front Row. I've even tried making my selections as "default" but it doesn't work.
I've tried repairing permissions on my disk, and there do seem to be problems with Front Row. However, no matter how many times I repair, the permissions still persist. Log file below
Can anyone offer any tips to a newbie (recently switched from a PC.)
    Thanks,

So, can anyone offer any suggestions on how to change my music in Front Row's Slide Show?

  • Better music selection in slideshow and 'sync' to music

It's a pain to select a song you want to play along with slideshow. I have to move things around in my iTunes library to get it to work. I'd like to be able to select a song, or two, without having to arrange it all ahead of time in iTunes.
Then, I'd like to hit a button to sync the slideshow to the duration of the music selected (whether it's one, two or more songs). It takes too long to try to get the music to match the duration of the slideshow as it is.

    Jed:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Did you repair disk permissions after each of the updater were run? It's important that it be done after any software installation or update. I'd give it another go and see if that helps. Also Terence's question regarding Quicktime is important.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Automatic slideshow duration to match timeline length?

I set up a slideshow in the iMovie timeline of about 60 pictures, between which I had a fade out, fade in transition. I then dragged two songs to the time line and they seemed to fit the length of the slideshow automatically.
I decided to change one of the songs and now the timeline is about a minute longer so that the slideshow pictures end long before the music does.
Is there a way for iMovie to automatically resize the duration of each clip and transition to fill the length of the timeline? I don't know if I'll have the time to go through each clip and transition and change the duration of them all to equal the length of the songs. Can iMovie do this for me?
    Any ideas?

Unlike iPhoto slideshows, iMovie has no "fit to music" command.
But it's not hard to do manually. Note that iMovie lets us set the playtime duration of a fistful of photos all at the same time. Do the math for a rough estimate of the duration needed for each slide, select all the slides, then apply that duration to all. If it's off by a few seconds, adjust them accordingly.
It helps to import the images as stills, not rendered clips, so their duration can be changed quickly. Turn OFF the Ken Burns checkbox while importing the images, so the duration of a group of stills can be changed almost instantly. After it's what you want, THEN apply transitions. (They too can be applied to multiple clips.)
Remember to take the playtime of the durations into account in your plans. And whatever padding you want at the start/end for titles, etcetera.
This topic shows how to set the slides to match the beat of the music. Some of what it describes applies to your task too:

  • Since downloading ios5 on my iphone 4 the capacity guage in itunes shows other as over 21Gb and i can no longer fit any music on it. How do I get rid of the other stuff? other

Since downloading ios5 on my iphone 4 a few days ago, the capacity guage in itunes shows "other" as over 21Gb and i can no longer fit any music on my iphone.
How do I get rid of the other stuff?
capacity available on 32 Gb iphone is 28.49Gb
i previously had 21.97 Gb music, over 6 Gb photos, about 1Gb of apps, and minute amount of audio
now i have no music, 5.4 Gb photos and similar (0.8Gb) for  apps and audio. i have deleted heaps of photos and unused apps to try to make space but obviosly this is a much bigger problem. I also created a smaller music folder on itunes to sync to but at present no music is selected for syncing due to the lack of available space.
i have 15Gb icloud account now also which is about half full.
Ive done a little research and heard similar tales but with much smaller other totals than this. Can you help?
i cant update my apps as i get a message saying i do not have enough available space.

I had the same problem today and was able to resolve it without having to do a restore or reset. The problem had something to do with my mail accounts. The upgrade reset my mail settings, switching both my gmail and my .mac mail to "archive all mail". I went into the General Settings, disabled that setting, and resynced the phone. The "other" storage allottment dropped back down to less than a gig.
Before you restore or reset, I would try that first.
