Slideshow For Wake

I've been asked to throw together a slideshow for a wake tomorrow. Given the time constraint, it'll have to be a fairly simple affair with pics, an MP3 or two, some title cards and simple transitions / pan-and-scan / etc. I know to the resize the pics to 1000 x 750. So I think I'm set, except...
I have a question about how to render it...
I'm pretty sure they have a DVD player, so that's Plan A. I thought they could just set up the repeat feature on the DVD player to continously cycle the slideshow, but how would I burn a DVD so that it automatically starts upon repeat? Is it just as simple as not including a menu? Is there anything else I'm missing? I don't want them to plop the DVD in have it not work, or only play once. FWIW, I'm using Taiyo Yuden media (DVD-R, I believe).
But... I also think they have a laptop hooked up via HDMI If so, would that be a better/safer bet than my Plan A? If so, what should I render it as? I'm thinking I'd just throw it on a USB flash drive. I'm not sure what OS they have, so I'd need something that worked on Mac or Win. I'm assuming any Apple or Windows media player would have an auto-repeat function to allow for continious repeat. Oh, and if I'm going this route, what project settings would I use to take advantage of the HD setup (and should I resize the pics to something > 1000x750)?
I'm using PRE 7.
TIA!
ETA: Another option I have is to use Adobe Lightroom to create a slideshow. It would definitely be quicker, although more limited. It can export the entire thing as "H.264 MPEG-4". Is that something I could put on a flash drive? Is it something I could suck into PRE and create a DVD from?

Thanks guys for all the advice!
So one thing I did that worked out well was to do the project as a DVD... but as a widescreen DVD project.
Although it wasn't HD quality, it was HD aspect ratio (or close to it) so there were no ugly black bars. Plus, given that most of the pictures I got from people looked like low-quality JPGs of scanned-in printed photos and camera phone shots, I don't think HD quality would have made much difference.
I created 2 DVDs (great suggestion, Peru Bob) and also exported a .MOV as a "Plan B".
Luckily the DVD worked just fine so Plan B wasn't required (although the funeral home couldn't figure out how to get the "repeat" function to work on their player so they had somebody just stand there and press "Play" when it finished... hey, sometimes the low-tech approach works too! ). But it was sure nice to have a "Plan B" without having to create a 2nd project.
But, man, I forgot how convoluted the "share" options are in PRE 7. It took me a long time to find the right .MOV export stuff, and longer still to figure out how to output it as wide-screen (had to change the screen size and PAR... ugh).
As an aside, I resized all my pics to be 1000 pixels wide. In retrospect, I wonder if they should have been slightly larger for a widescreen project - I think the 1000 px advice is for a standard DVD project. It worked out fine, though. Also no problems with MP3's
In the end, the widescreen DVDs worked great on an HDTV, and everybody got to see a nice send-off for their friend/brother/son, so thanks guys for all the helpful advice.

  • My Apple TV is having problems with slideshows for photos synced from iTunes. How can I make it play thew whole slideshow without starting the loop again half way through?

My Apple TV randomly returns to the beginning in the middle of the slideshow for no reason. I don't habve the photos on shuffle
I started the slide show many times and somtimes it got through 20 photos, other times 50. Then all of a sudden, it goes back to the beginning and starts again. It's so frustrating as there is no reason for this and it doesn't loop back to the start on the same photo each time. I have about 350 photos in the album and they all loaded fine as thumbnails before I played the slideshow.
    Can anyone help please?
    Thanks, Adam

Have solved my own problem. My PC sits on the floor so I have a four-port USB hub on my desktop with one port in use. I use one of the other three ports for USB-related task. As I was shutting down for the night I had a - what turned out to be inspired - thought about whether there was an adequate power supply from the hub. I then tried the iPod USB connection directly into the front of my machine and everything worked. It seems that an inadequate power supply was the cause of this strange set of conditions.

Although letting the player do the job may be the easier way, you might want to explore the use of a free program named InfoEdit that was brought up in a 2010 thread here.

I have not used InfoEdit, but you might find it interesting.

  • HELP!  Encore "suddenly" won't make slideshows for me!

Okay, Win 7 Pro (x64) system, Encore CS5.5 (aka Encore 5.1).  I've made many a slideshow, automatic and manual, both with just a few slides and with scores of them.  If a desired slideshow had more than 99 slides in it, I've had no problem splitting the slides between 2 or more slideshows and linking them together.  My most recent project including slideshows was in November/December (can't remember which EXACTLY) of last year (i.e., within a couple of months).  HOWEVER, now I can't get the program to create a slideshow for DVD no matter how small it is!
I had a project with several small movies, including video slideshows created outside of Encore, and some 470 pictures in manual slideshows (no single slideshow exceeded 97 slides).  The slides were all JPEGs, fit to 720x480.  When I first tried to build the project, I got past Transcoding to the "Preparing Project for Build - Building Slideshows" and got the ever-so-helpful "General Error" message, which of course killed the build.  Sometimes, if I re-loaded the project and tried the build, it got past "Building Slideshows" to "Loading videos" (clearly of the slides) and THEN I got the "General Error"!
I tried saving the project to another folder/name... same result.  I saved it to another folder/name and removed all videos, leaving ONLY the slideshows... same result.  FWIW- I tried removing all the slides and built just the videos, and that worked FINE!
I tried empty projects FROM SCRATCH, creating a single slideshow using DIFFERENT PICTURES... "General Error".
I tried reverting everything (well, any videos) to original, deleting EVERYTHING out of the Transcodes folder and re-building... same result.
I cleared the Media Caches database... no help.  I deleted EVERYTHING in the "Media Cache" and "Media Cache Files" folders in the AppData>Roaming>Adobe>Common folders... still no help!
I've re-installed Encore from my Production Pro CS5.5 setup files... no go!
Two things I've noticed, neither of which may be overly useful...  first, it builds fine to Blu-Ray and Flash, just not to DVD, second, under the File menu, ALL options under "Render" (i.e., Render Project, Render Motion Menus and Render Slideshows) are greyed out!
What I need, aside from a miracle, of course, is to know a) is the build TRACKED/LOGGED anywhere so that I might be able to figure out what's going wrong?  -and- b) What suggestions might y'all have to help me here?
'most any and all help is appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!

I'll just say that your Confirm that a 3 slide slideshow fails. Try it with jpg's that have all been opened and resaved in photoshop. I don't know what it means that the slideshow phase of building works, then the next step fails. I agree that should mean something, but I don't know what.
    Stan,
Thanks.  I don't understand the first sentence in your remarks at all.  As for the second one, all of the pictures have been opened and re-saved in Photoshop, as I used it to resize all of them down to the 720x480 range.  It was a good thought, though!  ;^)
What I really don't get is why a brand-spankin' new project, with entirely different pictures, also results in a "General Error"!
It's SOOOO frustrating that there isn't any avenue to help that doesn't cost me more money beyond these forums, and no one here seems to have an answer either!

I am using Lightroom on my MAC where I import the finalized JPEG-pictures into iPhoto to create a slideshow (for instance in combination with films). When exporting the slideshow with a 1080p resolution to iTunes I experience difficulties (missing slides and black transitions). When using JPEG-pictures directly from the camera there are no problems, so the manipulation in Lightroom seem to cause corrupt files. Does anyone recognize tje problem and could it have anything to do with the introduction of the Yosemite software? Is Lightroom already Yosemite-proof?

Installed just fine for me in CS4. For some reason on
occasion the downloads from the exchange get corrupted somehow. One
thing that has worked for others is to download the extension
again, as well as using a different browser to download the
    extension.

Can I transfer a slide show to Apple TV and then take my Apple TV to another home and plug it into the TV and play that slideshow for those friends?

If you mean transfer a slideshow from your computer then no. It is not storing it but rtaher streaming from the computer over your local network. The old model had an accessible hard-drive that would have allowed this.

  • Best way to make a slideshow for a wedding?

I am trying to make a slideshow for a wedding. What is the best way to make this?

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  Select Size = Medium or Large.
Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailier like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.
Why iLife 09 instead of 11?
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:
This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:
You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

  • Anybody create slideshows for businesses? ...need advice

    Hi Kids,
well, ...my goal is to create slideshows for businesses here in town. But I am not sure what businesses would benefit from them.
I have done quite a few slideshows for family and friends, and am trying to think of ways to earn some extra money to put my daughter thru school.
I am employed full time as an Art Director for an advertising agency, so I would like to use my experience as a graphic designer to create professional packaging/graphics, etc. for the client as well.
Anybody care to share what type of business to approach, that lend themselves to a slideshow, ...like your typical wedding slideshow.
    Thanks so much in advance
    Robin

One possible service you could provide is to scan in people's photo albums, page by page or better yet have them remove and submit those photos in order and create a slideshow either in iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD (that's what I prefer) and add some music. I get better final image quality when creating the slideshow entirely in iDVD and it's easy to add titles and comments
(NOTE: if you import the photos using iPhoto or iDVD's media pane all of the file names/titles will be shown if you select the Show titles option. If you select the photo thumbnails in iPhoto and drag into the open iDVD slideshow organization window, you won't get all of the titles when the option is selected. Makes it easier to add just one or two titles without having to delete all the rest manually.)
A great, IMO, slideshow application that you can import into iDVD to burn is PhotoPresenter. I think it has better themes and transitions than iPhoto and will take both stills and video clips in the same show.

OK - that changes things. I use Extensis Portfolio to share images with customers. You can create a slideshow to put on a disc as well as web pages.
Check out http://www.extensis.com/en/products/assetmanagement/productinformation.jsp?id=prod60006 It may co$t a little more than you want.
You might also want to look at RapidWeaver from http://www.realmacsoftware.com/rapidweaver/ for creating web pages with slideshows and FotoMagico for making slideshows http://www.fotomagico.com/
