Slideshow frame rate when sent to iDVD is 29.97 rather than 25 (PAL)

When I send a slideshow to iDVD, it appears as NTSC 29.97fps rather than the required 25fps I need. This results in jerky movements as the app (which is set to 25fps) plays the movie. Are there any settings to correct this which I don't seem to have found?

Did you set iMovie's preferences to 25 fps before you began importing files?

Read Matti Haveri's post here, http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4101959 and follow the link to his "iMovie HD 6 bugs" page. It's very informative.
Check the iMovie 6 forum for tips to get your projects to stick in PAL. It's not an uncommon problem, but there are solutions that work. I just don't remember them at the moment. (perhaps you'll find them in Matti's page) You can also find tips for getting the best image quality out of iMovie. (ex: avoid Ken Burns, don't let iMovie render your photos - pull into iDVD and let it do all the rendering) However, to get the best visual quality take TD's advice and use a 3rd party app.
For my home projects, I use iMovie to compile and edit my video clips. I create my slideshows entirely in iDVD. I crop my photos to 16:9 and place them in an iPhoto album, so it's quick and simple to create the widescreen iDVD slideshow. There is no Ken Burns effect, but iDVD gives the largest image size and best resolution of all the iLife apps. For my family use, I find the quality to be satisfactory.

Smilebox probably doesn't create a movie file in the proper format.  I note that Smilebox has their own DVD creation software for both PCs and Macs; why not use it?

  • Changing animation frame rate when rendering in photoshop does not change the length of the video?

I made a walk cycle animation in Photoshop CS6 and want to render it into a quicktime format. I'd like it to be 12 fps, but when I rendered it at 12 fps the video seemed to be missing frames, and the video was 3 seconds long. I have 98 frames to my animation; doing the math, at 12 fps it should be 8 seconds long. Not 3.
I was confused and for curiosity's sake I rendered the video at 6 fps, trying to really slow it down. The video ended up being STILL 3 seconds long and only maybe 20 frames. I was missing literally 70 frames. I'm so upset with this rendering thing, I could chuck my computer at the wall.
Does anybody know of a solution to this?
edit: If it means anything, I've tried rendering it straight from the frame view and the timeline view. Each time I render it I have the timeline frame rate match the rendering frame rate as well.

Photoshop CS6 and CC support two types of animation Frame animations and a Video Timeline
Changing the frame rate should not change the length of a video timeline. It should just change the number of frames that are rendered.  To change the length of a video you need to change the length of the video timeline.  If you increase the length of the timeline and there is audio I'm quite sure there will be a problem with it,  The Video part will most likely be better then the sound. The required number of extra frames can be generated however the video may look like slow motion. If you decrease the length the motion will speed up.  The length of a video is normally done be editing video clips which are trimmed and stitched together to get the desired duration. Not normally done by altering the duration of a clip.
The duration a of Frame animation is the sum of the times each frame is displayed.  In a frame animation the length of time a frame is displayed can be varied it not a normal motion picture video.  To have a smooth frame animation you need a sufficient number of frames that are different from each other to show smooth motion.  You can use Photoshop Frame animation tween feature to have Photoshop manufacture frames to help with a smoothing the animation.   Once you have a frame animation the length with the motion you want you can have Photoshop convert it to a video timeline and render a normal motion picture video.  It will not have audio but you can add audio to it.

  • URGENT- DOING MEMORIAL VIDEO sound and video are off when sent to iDVD

I watch the video in iMovie and the sound and video are in sync. When I send to iDVD, the two are no longer in sync. I have made changes to the iMovie project since my last DVD burn. With the initial burn, there were no sound issues.
I've tried all of the following:
    1. closing and reopening iMovie and iDVD
    2. resending from iMovie to iDVD
    3. readding the clip and removing the original clip from the iMovie project
    4. restarting my computer
The only things I have not done are the following:
    1. redownloading the original video clip from my camcorder
    2. recreating the project
    3. trying a different project to see if that one has the same audio/video issue (this will be my next step)
#2 above is literally so intense as I have a lot of editing on this. To make it clear to you, I have video footage of a memorial.... and after the memorial I chose little 20-30 second clips here and there. I don't have audio with those clips -- just iTunes music overlay.... so, those I don't need to worry about sound coinciding.... just the 30 minute clip that is the actual memorial service.
This is time sensitive.... it is a memorial video and I don't have time to redo the thing from the beginning, especially considering how long it took me to find those 20-30 second clips of the post-memorial.
    Please help!

Yes... I had seen that.... and, yep, have the latest software.... and even rebooted my machine thinking that maybe it hadn't been restarted since the update (can't remember how long ago the update was).
I did a test run with a mobile size (it takes over an hour when I share with iDVD, which has been annoying with all my attempts to "fixing") file sharing with media browser and still the sound was not matched.
I started another project alltogether in iMovie and it does not have the sound issue when sent to iDVD....
I can copy and paste the more difficult editing I did between the "bad original copy" and my "do-over"... but, it seems to not copy exact length of each clip (it decreased it by a second each clip on the ones I copied over but that is weird since it did copy over the slowed % I had on the original) ..... see the more complex editing I have has the sound silenced and I have music overlay on that....
I have many more to go... and can't copy text directly from one project to another... in fact, there is a lot you can't just copy over.... I have to redo the music, special effects etc. This is not going to be a walk in the park if I can't find a way to make my "bad original copy" work.
Still looking for more suggestions (than to start all over), but will have to start over if I spend too much time making the one I have work.... then it becomes more sensical to just start over. I have quite a bit of time in the original, but if I can copy and paste the clips, that takes a majority of the work out.... but, if any of my copy and pastes somehow "corrupt" the sound sync on the portion that isn't silenced and music overlaid, then, there is a lot of work having to recreate all my edits from scratch.

  • IDVD 8 - Slideshows work fine when viewing in iDVD, howver once burned

iDVD 8 - Slideshows work fine when viewing in iDVD, howver once burned the slideshows pause and crackel. I have tired this on two differnet PowerBook G4's that I own and I get same results.
I've tried playing on my DVD player and my two PowerBooks.
Hope someone can help. I've burned about 15 disc and keep getting the same results.

Might be the media you're using...
I recommend a disk image burned to Verbatim DVD-R at 4X or slower using Toast or Disk Utility. You can set burn speed in iDVD '08 if not creating a disc image.
David Pogue also recommends Verbatim on page 356 of his book:

  • Changing frame rate when exporting from iMovie '09 using quicktime has no impact on duration.  Why?

Changing frame rate when exporting from iMovie '09 using quicktime has no impact on duration.  Why?
I have a file created by digitizing an 8mm film at a rate of 24 fps. I would like to create a downloaded movie at a frame rate of 15 fps.  The Export using Quicktime option seems to provide that capability but the resulting file has the same duration as the original 24 fps file.  How can I get the exported movie to be slowed down?

    joegez,
There is a feature you can use to slow down the video. In the project, move the mouse pointer over the clip, then click the gear icon. That brings up the Inspector. Click the Clip tab. Then you will see a feature there called Speed. Move the slider to the left to slow down the clip. Or you can enter a percentage in the box on the right.
Hope this solves the problem for you.

  • Posterize Time VS Preseve Frame Rate When nested

    Hello Every one.
When Nesting  Two Compositions with different Frame Rates, I heard Posterize Time, Is a old Effect that many people use it.  But It can cause Lots of problems.
So, Is It better Inside Composition Settings- Advanced:  To Check Preserve frame rate when nested or in render queue ?
    Thank You.

If you have to preserve the frame rate, I would just choose to preserve the frame rate. However, there are many times when you don't even need to preserve the frame rate. So, if you don't actually need to preserve it, don't.

    Hello all,
I use 2 Ace basler GigE cameras at 60 fps to capture animal locomotion. I experience randomly this kind of problem. When I start to record by a start/stop button and save the videos in the hard-disk sometime the frame rate drop to 20-14 fps and a skip 2 or 3 frame. After that the frame rate became stable to 60 fps.
These are the overall settings and spec of the program:
    - I use a producer/consumer loop (I never experienced a filling of the queue even when the drop frame rate occur)
    - I fixed the bandwidth of the Intel 100 GigE card to 500 for each camera
    - size of packet sent = 8000
    - firewall disabled
    - vi execution in highest mode
I observed that the dropping of the frame rate occur when the vi run for a while without interaction with the operator (the operator set others parameters in another computer, so the vi only acquire the videos without saving them)

    Alex,
Does this drop in frame rate occur with both cameras or does it only occur with the "left" or "right" camera acquisition loops.  I think what is happening is that your producer loop is overwriting the images before they get written to the AVI.  In addition there may be some memory conflicts as queues are generally not recommended for IMAQ Images.  Here is an explanation stating that instead of enqueuing an Image Object you are actually enqueuing a memory location to an image.   This means that when you produce a new image it is writing to the same memory location you are trying to read from when you write the frame to AVI.  This forum offers a possible workaround.

  • IPhoto Slideshow Image Quality when export to IDVD

Aloha ... I have two issues that I am having problems with when I export to IDVD. My images look very fuzzy (originals are very high res and print quality images} when exported to iDVD and a DVD is made. Also in the show my vertical images look fine and fill the screen yet on iDVD they are made shorter/squatier and upper and lower parts of the original image are lost. The format is wide screen as is the show. I am using a LCD wide screen TV if that helps. Any ideas out there?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you cropping your photos to the 16:9 ratio before creating the widescreen slideshow in iPhoto and exporting them to iDVD for a widescreen project? Most digital camera images are in the 4:3 size ratio and don't convert well to the widescreen. Also check the aspect ratio that you're playing the dvd in as that can have an effect on how the slideshow looks.
Also remember that the images going to iDVD will be reduced to 640 x 480 (normal TV) and slightly larger for the widescreen version. So the pixel dimensions of the original image are not that relevant.
    Happy Holidays
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Preserve frame rate when loading one swf into another

Is there a way to preserve the frame rate of a swf when
loading it into another swf that plays at a higher frame rate. I'm
loading some flash ads that mostly run at around 12-15 frames a
second into a portfolio site that runs at around 40 frames per
second. All my ads play too fast. The link is:
    www.dg8tal.com/portfolioidea.html
    Thanks!

As far as I understand it, there is no option to override the
frame rate designated by the main movie you are loading into. The
SWF file you are loading always inherits the framerate of the SWF
you are loading it into. Here are some suggested work-arounds that
    might help:
    1) Lower the frame rate of the main movie on the website that
    you are loading into.
    2) Expand the timelines of the advertisements just for use in
    your portfolio
    3) Put your menu and thumbnails in one HTML frame that can
then load each item in another HTML frame above it. Since each SWF
would load on its own, the framerate of your main swf would not
matter. You would lose your nice resizing effect though unless you
did some more complicated integration with javascript I imagine.
I would recommend going with option 2, since that will take
the smallest amount of work while preserving your overall design.
However, with the faster framerate, your advertisements would have
difference performance characteristics that you'll need to assess.
I'm trying to think of more options, but these seem to be the
first things that come to mind.

  • Intro Movie at slower frame rate when uploaded

The intro movie I created for my photography site plays too
slow when uploaded, thus making the music finish long before the
animation is done; needless to say, this makes for a very tacky
    intro!
Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong?
    Thanks

The frame rate is always set to the "prefered" frame rate.
The actual frame rate depends on the server, the speed and the size
of the swf file. The best you can do is to fully optomise the
images before you import them into flash.
As you are into photography I can understand the need for
good quality images thefore it is a case of what do you prefer?
    Good images or good speed!

  • Why does my photo slideshow quality deteriorate when exported to iDVD?

I have a client whose photos look great in iPhoto & iMovie, but look all pixelated when exported to iDVD. I've tried making a slideshow directly with iDVD, but the photos still look worse than they did in the iPhoto slideshow.
The size of the photos is pretty large (as big as 5233 x 3546), which I'm guessing might be part of the problem, so I tried exporting them from iPhoto with a limitation of 720 x 540, but they still look bad. I expect a decrease in quality once I burn the DVD, but these look bad even in the DVD preview.
    Any ideas?

All DVD slideshows are defaulted to 640 x 480 pixels. That's the standard. As long as the photos are in the 4:3 dimension ratio you can leave them at their fullest size. You can try using the Pro Quailty encoding to get better quality images. IMO the best image quality is obtained by creating the slideshow in iDVD from still photos. You don't get the Ken Burns effect, but in my opinion it's a bit over used too many time.
If you are creating your slideshow in iMovie then try the following.
1 - when your slideshow is how you want it quit iMovie.
2 - open iDVD, create a slideshow and open the slideshow edit mode.
3 - drag the iMovie project file into the slideshow pane on the left. (NOTE: this lets iDVD scale the movie file to the TV safe area when played on CRT TV sets.)
This also lets iDVD do the encoding for the iMovie assets and avoids two compressions, one by iMovie when you export to iDVD and the iDVD encoding.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. • Playback drops frame rate when context menu opens

    Hello,
I was wondering why is frame rate of the video drops when I open the context menu, the playback seems to go down as much as 5fps, and it goes back to normal when the context menu is closed.
    Thanks in advance.

lghtanddrk, if you send me a link to your AVCHD MTS file, I can trying exporting it as a MOV file and see if I get the same issue. For me QT seems to be slowing no matter what HD file I give it.
What camera did you use to shoot your footage and how big is the AVCHD file? What's the data rate of your MP4/H.264 file? Again, if it's possible to get some of your MP4 footage, I can check if I have problems playing it.
I have two partions on my machine: one is WinXP SP2 without the updates and QT7.3.1 (for Avid XPress Pro) and the other has WinXP SP3 with all the updates and QT7.6.4 (I think that's the latest one). So, I can try on both to see if there are issues.
When you export as DV AVI, are you exporting as a SD (720x480?). I know that HD is square pixels and SD is non-square. The HD is 16x9 and the SD is 4:3. You could try and export your AVI as 720x540 square pixels or 720x480 non-square i.e. NTSC (CCIR 601) or try exporting as 854x480 square pixels to give your original 16x9 widescreen at SD resolution. I haven't looked at this stuff for a while, so, I'm kind of guessing here!
