Slideshow looks soft and not sharp enough

Slideshow with LR4 for raw and JPG files is not sharp enough (seems a bit soft or appears not enough resolution) when comparing to using ViewNX2 for NEF files or using photo explorer of Windows 7 (with plugin) for DNG files. The same result for a small notebook screen or a 42" 1080P display. Any one can provide help on this? What is your best way to conduct slideshow of raw files for the right resolution that meeting display size? I have set my standard preview size to 2048pixels and medium quality.

How are you are you playing the slideshow (i.e. inside LR using 'Play,' exported PDF or Video) and what type of template are you using? It's best to match the template aspect ratio to the target playback screen aspect ratio. For my 16:9 1920 x1080 monitor I use a custom 'Widescreen Template like this:
My previews are also set to 2048 pixels, medium quality and PDF slideshow exports are sharp. If you read the post I linked to you will see that LR on Windows 7 causes portrait images in the PDF slideshow to have jaggies, which actually appear onscreen as "over-sharpening." I rarely use the LR Slideshow module full-screen 'Play' function, but just checked it for comparison. You are correct, both landscape and portrait images in the LR full-screen slideshow 'Play' mode appear slightly softer than the Slideshow PDF export at 'Screen' resolution and 91 Quality. What is interesting is that there are no "jaggies" in portrait images when using the native LR slideshow 'Play' mode, so the images are being rendered differently than the slideshow 'Export' modes.
IMHO, the slideshow module has become an orphaned stepchild of LR with issues that Adobe has ignored since LR2. For the best possible rendering I'd use 'Export PDF Slideshow' using the target viewing screen resolution and 90+ Quality, but there is this caveat:
LR has at least three different implementation versions, concerning this LR Slideshow Module behavior:
                         Stroke Border      Portrait Images
Mac OS:           Causes softness    OK (no resample artifacts)
Windows Vista: No issues               Resample artifacts (jaggies)
Windows 7:       Causes softness    Resample artifacts (jaggies)
This was at least the case for LR3.6 and I'm pretty sure LR4.1 has the same issues.

It sounds like you have chosen a publishing template rather than a word processing template. There are two basic modes in MS Word: word processing and publishing layout. Word processing mode (and all word processing templates) have a continuous text box in the page for writing text. The publishing layout mode (and publishing templates) are documents that have text boxes placed for articles, titles, pictures, etc. Be sure to choose the word document template and you’ll get what you expect. Do not choose the word publishing document.

  • Is there a way to have parallax scrolling and a changing slideshow? (so the slideshow looks still and it looks like you scroll your content over it again)

Is there a way to have parallax scrolling and a changing slideshow? (so the slideshow looks still and it looks like you scroll your content over it again)

You can apply opacity to images or define key position for slideshow so that with page scroll the opacity changes and will bring the similar effect.

  • Openbox/e17 GTK Applications look blocky and not correct

    Hi Guys,
I have been using Openbox and e17, and for some reason any GTK application does not look right on either. Is there any way to fix this?
    Regards,

We won't be able to help you if you do not answer the questions we ask. The relevant config files are the ones for gtk ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini and ~/.gtkrc-2.0 (but that should be obvious if you've read the link bohoomil posted).  Also, if you have this problem with Fedora, then you should post the question at their forum and not here as mentioned in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … ow_to_Post

  • Why does my video clip look faded and not work on my timeline?

I am making a simple short movie on my timeline. In fact, I already made it.
However, when I added a credits sequence (which used to look fine and worked normally), I ran into a problem.
Now, on my timeline, the little purple box that indicates the credis sequence is a little faded. Also, the text in the credits is inexplicably invisible, and can't be modified to any form of invisibilty.
How did I manage to create this mess, and how do I get my credits to look normal again?
    -Jason Luna

Could it be that you disabled the scrolling title( I assume that is what you mean when you say "Credit sequence"). Hitting the V key when a clip/title is selected will disable it. Select it and hit V and see if it fixes your problem. If it is disabled you won't see the text.

  • I made a slide show using imovie.  When I play it back on my imac, the slideshow looks perfect.  However when I burned in via iDVD and play the disc, the resolution drops off.  The video appears fuzzy and not sharp.  Any ideas why?

I made a slide show using imovie.  When I play it back on my imac, the slide show is crystal clear and sharp.   I burned a disc of the slide show using iDVD.  When I played the dvd the resolution is very poor.  Fuzzy and shakey images.  I tried various solutions, Apple tec told me to go to preferences on iDVD  and select "professional" to get higher resolution. Tried that but results still the same.  Any ideas?

When you play on your Mac, you can have resolution up to 1920x1080.
When you burn to iDVD you convert to 640x480.

  • ICal event alarms aren't loud enough (and not long enough)...

I'm going to be getting my first smartphone very soon and am trying to decide which to get. I have an iMac, so I heavily favor the iPhone. But, I've run into a potential problem with Events in iCal:
I want to get an iPhone, use iCal for my schedule, and use MobileMe to keep everything synced. Until now, I've only used the calendar features in regular phones. I've been testing iCal on my Mac, and it clearly will be easier to program events into it.
My problem is iCal's audible alarm. I've been testing it by having it sound on my iMac (since I don't yet have an iPhone), and it seems you can only have a brief audible alarm sound (for instance, the "Glass" or "Basso" sound option with the "Message with Sound" option). I'm used to the calendars on regular cell phones, which have a loud alarm that repeats (like a cell phone ringer). Is there something I can do in iCal to make its alarm louder and repetitive on an iPhone?
I have a friend who has a droid phone and used the Google calendar. He says there is a setting on his phone (separate from the settings in Google's calendar) that lets him choose any ringer or .mp3 as the audible alarm for alerts from the Google calendar.
If I can't get a loud, repetitive alarm to sound on my iPhone with my iCal events, then it's really not going to work for me. The alarm will be going off on my iPhone and I will never hear it.
I know this question may be basic, but I really, really need an answer before I proceed (and I can't find the answer online). Thank you!

That is very surprising. Short of someone being able to recommend an app or other work around for this, the lack of such an audible alarm will rule the iPhone out for me. And I've waited a very long time for it to come to my carrier, so that is very disappointing.
It's really shocking to me that the designers wouldn't have started out by saying we need to have this smartphone incorporate every standard feature of previous regular phones. I had really not even thought that this could be a problem. I just stumbled on it and am astonished at the lack of a user ability to customize the alarm feature to a suitable sound.

  • Display is twice normal width and  not deep enough!

My Imac which I have just bought Secondhand has suddenly stretched the display to twice screen width and is very bad on Outlook .Can someone please help me to get it back to normal?

A couple of things to check:
System Preferences>Displays and make sure the correct resolution is selected (it's normally the one at the top).
System Preferences>Accessibility (or Universal Access, depending on OS version) and check that Zoom isn't enabled.

  • Exported form pdf boxes not big enough to see and edit in on

how do I set the .pdf exported form to be able to expand the entry box so entrants can see the whole thing they've typed, and so when they print it, it shows the whole box... right now to make the form look small, and not just have big empty boxes, the spaces look smaller but have unlimited entry characters... but you can't see what you're doing with such small boxes that don't expand...is there a setting i'm missing?

No, you are not missing anything. The PDF can't be relayed out to show all of the text in the boxes. Only workaround is to make the text boxes larger

  • Images in mp4 slideshow are 'soft'.

Perhaps I'm doing something wrong here. I've just completed a quick experiment in Slideshow and exported w/a short-enough piece of music for the 12 slides I'm using.
The slideshow looks great when I play it back in Preview.
However, when I export as a 'video', images in the slideshow look 'soft', out of focus! (Both in the 480x320 and the 720x480 presentation size.)
Now this is the first time I've putzed around w/the Slideshow module since LR2. In the past I had produced PDF slideshows at various presentation sizes with fabulous results. In fact, the fade's were good and w/Adobe's most current Reader installed the transitions were nearly spot-on to what I had built into the slideshows in LR.
What is it I'm not getting about exporting as an mp4 here in LR3?
As well, is there a way I can trim the 'fat' from these finished movies (eg. imovie, etc.)?
For only 12 slides (w/music) at 480x320 we're looking at 3.6MB, the 720x480 file jumps to nearly 14MB!
And, last but not least, any suggestions on good places to shop for mp3 files that are drm-free?
In my experiment I used a piece by Merry Clayton, from the 'Performance' soundtrack; but when I publish something I don't want to be ripping someone's ©'d work...
    thx,
    mm
See both versions of slideshows I am referencing HERE. (Videos play just fine in Firefox. NO playback in Safari.)

    T.R.,
Thanks for the input and your suggestion. If you follow the link I posted in my (very late) response to Pete's post (from back in October) I was finally able to wrestle a 'reasonably sharp' version of the slideshow movie I wanted to make through the Slideshow module w/LR.
    What I did was this:
    1) Exported images sized to 720p wide. Then
    2) Re-imported the smaller TIFF's back into LR and sharpened them almost till my teeth ached (were WAY-too 'crunchy' for my liking when viewed in the content window), then
    3) Brought the new, smaller and Über Sharpened images into the Slideshow module where I exported the thing with music AGAIN!
Miraculously this procedure seemed to work... WRONG. (Only temporarily!)
Why do I say this? Because when I decided to make a new slideshow sans music – using the exact same image files w/the same (Snapshot) settings I saved back in October (it is now 5 months later) – the resulting slideshow's images are back to MUSH AGAIN! (Grrrrrrr.)
So I tried your idea T.R., your work-around experimenting with the 'Widescreen' template Adobe provides... NO GO: Got the same garbagy reproduction of images no matter what export size I use for the movie files!
I'm going to keep on trying – BUT I really don't understand why Adobe would roll-out a generally impressive application like LR3 and have included a feature it would seem to me to be of real utility to many of the folks using LR. (Not only wedding shooters, which, I'm going to assume, would totally glom-on to being able to make 'cool' slideshows of the events they make their livings on; but also 'artists' that might create something more 'edgy' or engaging: Combining, say, an mp3 version of some spoken-word story or poem in tandem with an engaging series of images.) But no.
I find myself almost embarrassed now, the praise I continue to heap on this application – and Adobe – when I talk to others about Lightroom. I REALLY have no use for the Print module. The Web module is really quite nice – lots of controls to make clean, sophisticated (HTML) designs – though I still find myself doing additional, followup work in D'weaver to get rid of some clunky design issues w/my exports here. (*It would be great if we could easily adapt templates so that those of us who want to get rid of, for example, that ugly, clunky Old School link underlining that is generated with whatever is typed-into the 'Web or Mail Link' field...) C'est la vie.
Do we really need to purchase ANOTHER app to make wonderful slideshows that look as good as they should?!

  • Photoshop - how do I make a surface soft and plain ?

Hey guys, been using PS "unofficially" for years now. I'm making this pic where I dropped a face from another pic and everything's fine except I just want to make the skin on the face look like the rest of the body. I've done everything I could luminosity/vibrance/saturation/contrast wise, but it still looks too sharp and "shiny", and I want it to look soft and plain, sort of less shiny/contrast-y. Know what I mean ? I'd provide the example, but it's kind of personal, unless I really really have to. Let me know, would really make this thing perfect if I could just get that info.
Have tried loads of stuff from the "Filter" menu, but nothing worked. I use a Mac, and PS CS5.
    THANK YOU THANK YOU !

There are many threads on making composites and working on skin often how one address this depends on the actual image content. I think you may find what you looking for faster if you do some web searching.

  • New Software for Lightroom is available! - This is a pop-up and not genuine

I have just received a pop-up for Lightroom. I have done a general search and it appears this is some kind of spam/scam? I noticed that there are others who have also received this pop-up.  It does not look like a genuine Adobe upgrade. It has 'Ignore these updates' 'remind me later' and download'....I have not 'clicked on any of its links.
I am operating on OS X 10.10.1 with a safari browser and my Adobe Lightroom and 'Flash' are both up-to-date'. My lightroom and all Adobe product is operating in Adobe CC. How do I get rid of this 'thing'?
Thanks, any suggestion that works will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the answers. I will say the pop-up looked suspicious and not at all what I would have expected from Adobe. As mentioned when I went with an online 'Google' search with regards this pop-up I found that there were others who also had doubts about this 'pretty basic pop-up'. But hey, thanks to both of you for the swift response and replies...All going as normal here and I can rest-easy.

  • IPhoto 11  slideshow mode decreases the image sharpness and quality

The images that weight over 5 MB and are fine and sharp become somewhat blured when displayed in the iPhoto '11 slideshow mode. The loss of image sharpness is just too big. The pictures look like they were made with a 100$ camera or even worse. I know the images are fine and big enough. I used picasa slideshow mode just to check. I saw a much better image quality and no noticable lose of sharpness.
Anyone has an idea why the iPhoto 11 slideshow mode looses so much image sharpness?

We all like iPhoto and its ease of use, good looks and fancy features.
However Aplle must concentrate on the core .... sufficient quality of the displayed images. The colors, sharpness, tones - the essence of photography
I understand that iPhoto is not the Aperture. But if the Slide Show mode virtually washes the sharpness away from the pictures than something is not right! Picture that is not sharp is worth the trash
If picasa slide show can do it I am sure iPhoto slide show can do it even better! We are waiting for the upgrade
