Slideshow module causes system to crash

Hi,
I have a strange problem with Lightroom on Win XP SP3. When using the Slideshow module, I can typically play the slideshow for a couple of shots and then the whole system crashes. Typically so that the screen just goes blank and the computer reboots. This occures in two different computers, and the only common thing in these are Windows XP SP3 and Matrox G550 (latest stable drivers). The error also occures with both LR 2.1 and 1.3. I haven't been able to reproduce this with any other applications on these computers.
Has anyone else seen this? Have you been able to fix it? The way the computer crashes would indicate that the problem is in a low level driver, but there must be something in Lightroom that trigggers this.
Regards,
Mike

Thanks for replying,
> Possible solution YES.
Well, not in my case. I can reproduce this reliably even if I render 1:1 previews for all photos right before going into Slideshow.
>Can you post a crash report from the control\admistrative tools\event viewer logs for that particular crash.
No. The system just dies and reboots. Nothig is written to the event log, nor are there any crashdumps generated. And this is the same on both computers.
> How much memory do you have?
4 GB on both. Tried both with and without the /3GB switch, same problem regardless of this setting.
(Btw, system one is Asus MB, Pentium 4 HT, Matrox G550 AGP, single DVI monitor. System 2 is Intel MB, Core 2 Duo, Matrox G550 on PCIe, double DVI+VGA monitors.)

  • Pcimxi module causing system panic

We have an UltraSparc Solaris 9 system which is panicing relatively often. The panic seems to be coming from a NULL pointer being dereferenced in the pcimxi module.

We are running version 2.0.0 of the NICpcimxi package. I don't see any newer versions or patches available. Has anybody else experienced this problem? If so, any suggestions. Thanks!

I've gotten some more info from our engineers regarding the problem as well. Evidently the system only panics when they are talking to the Spectrum Analyzer via PCI attached GPIB. You would think it is a GPIB problem, but the panic is from the pcimxi module. It doesn't always crash when connecting to the SA, however it can be frequent. The NIpcigpib software is 2.3, NICpcimxi is 2.0.0, and NICvisa is 3.1. The crash string is as follows:

  • Sound Converter Causes System to Crash

I recently bought a Blackberry 9650 and an 8gb media card. I want to add music to my media card so I can listen to music on the train without having to bring my POS mp3 player. The problem is that alot of my music is in flac format. When I used to run Ubuntu, I always used Sound Converter, which worked great without out problems. For some reason, Sound Converter refuses to cooperate in Arch.
I have noticed the problem is more common when I batch convert, however, certain albums ALWAYS trigger a crash. This crash doesn't just cause Sound Converter to crash, but the entire system goes down. It's frustrating that such a simple task is causing such a large problem. It's possible that there is a problem with the backend, because I have had no luck converting with ffmpeg either. Ffmpeg doesn't convert my music, but rather corrupts all the .flac files involved (thank god for backups).
So, I don't really know where to start on this one. I'm sure there is a log that I could look though that would explain the cause of this problem, but I'm still a bit of an Arch Linux noob. Let me know any information that you need to diagnose the problem and I'll post it ASAP.
    Thanks!

  • Effects cause system to crash

Hi, new to this forum but I'm getting incredibly frustrated with Premiere CC.  I recently switched from FCP and for the most part it has been a easy switch.  However, I'm growing frustrated when I attempt to add an effect to a clip or composite two clips on top of each other.  It's not a certain effect that's causing the crash either, it's happened during the warp stabilizer, crop, and even when trying to green screen some footage.  My system is plenty powerful enough to handle the problem so just curious if anybody else has been experiencing similar issues.

Please clarify whether the whole computer is crashing or just PPro. If it's Premiere, do you get any error message?
Also, please provide your system's specifications, especially graphics card and driver.

  • Invalid date format causes system to crash

Hello experts. I'm not sure where to even start looking to resolve this problem.
In the shopping cart if a user changes the delivery date to an incorrect format it causes the system to hang. For example if the user enters a date in the past such as 03/01/2006 the correct error msg is returned.  However, if they enter an invalid format like <b>0/28/2006, 0328/2006</b> a pop-up box with the "invalid date" msg continuously appears. Even after pressing "ok" it pops up over and over again.
The only way out is to terminate the application. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you

    Hi Jocelyne,
SP contains a lot of notes including the one you want.
If you do not want to test back all impacts generated by all the notes you do not want, you have to use option 2 which corrects only the bug you have now.
    Kind regards

  • Time machine backup causes system to crash

Hi, I had updates coming through on my macbook, and didn't realise until the next day that the power socket wasn't connected to my mac.  When I tried to use my mac I kept getting an error, in that the computer wouldn't run at all, wouldn't start up.
I tried to use a backup from my time machine but I wasn't able to do so and retain all my information on iphoto mail etc.
When I try and reinstall from time machine I still get the same problem.
Is there any fix that I can do that will allow me to access these backups and run them?
    Many thanks

I've been having problems over the last few days. It seems that it's stuck on 'Preparing Backup'. The menu bar icon shows activity all the time, but my last backup was over a day ago.
My system has been intermittently locking up as well. Sometimes it will unfreeze after a few minutes. Other times I'll have to power off using the power button. Not sure if this is related to Time Machine, but something's not right at the moment (maybe after the 10.5.4 update?)

  • Kaspersky save banking module causes Firefox to crash; in Internet Explorer no problem

Problem relates to combination of Pc Win 8.1, using Firefox 34, Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 and Rabo Internet banking. When I use Internet Explorer, utilise the KIS Save Banking Module and log in to the Rabo site, all goes well. When I do the same with Firefox, the browser opens a save window and waits for Rabo to connect. This goes on endless and the Firefox window gives "does not react". The only way of continueing is closing Firefox and start all over again. When I switch of the Save Banking module there is also no problem i.e. that the https site of Rabo works as normal. In earlier releases of KIS the problem never occurred.
Rabo technicians say, that there is no problem with their certificate (which indeed seems not the problem). Kaspersky says that Firefox updates so quickly, that development of compatible add-ons is difficult.
    What do I wrong?

'''''Kaspersky says that Firefox updates so quickly, that development of compatible add-ons is difficult.'''''
This Rapid Release schedule has been in effect for well over 3 years now ''[started with Firefox 5.0 on June 21, 2011]'' - so it's not "new".
Ask Kaspersky why they even offer add-ons for Firefox if they can't keep up with Firefox updates. ''FWIW, Chrome is on the same type of 6 week update routine that Mozilla uses, but with Chrome their updates are hidden and can install an update without Chrome even being open. Their "updater" runs whenever the PC is running; unlike Firefox which "looks for" updates while Firefox is running.''
Also, Norton / Symantec along with AVG are able to keep up with the Firefox Rapid Release schedule, and Roboform is fairly consistent; ask Kaspersky why "they" say ''and prove'' they are unable to keep up?
IMO, they're selling a product with features that they have no intention of keeping updated properly or in a timely manner. ''And I wonder how the US boycott of their home country's economy might be impacting their updates.''

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
The first step should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • If your Lightroom 6 is crashing in the Slideshow module, check the SAMPLE RATE of your music track

After spending over 2 hours with an Adobe technician who had control over my Windows 7 machine, I've learned something that I don't think Adobe knows yet...  I upgraded from LR 5.7 to LR 6 (not CC) and began having issues when I was working in the Slideshow module.  When trying to add a music track, Lightroom would crash ("unexpectedly quit").  I couldn't for the life of me figure out why.  I turned off the GPU since a fair amount of chatter on the forum related to that, but it didn't change anything.
So I finally waited patiently for the Adobe Chat line to finally get a tech to respond...and he was exceptionally detailed and methodical in his approach to diagnosing my issues.  I could follow on my screen as he did a variety of things that indicated he understood what he was doing.  Unfortunately he got to a point where he thought (as did I) that he had found the problem/solution...which he thought was related to the bit rate.  He concluded that music with a Variable Bit Rate (VBR) as opposed to a Constant Bit Rate (CBR) was causing the problem.  Also unfortunate was that this "discovery" was near the 2-1/2 hour mark and we did not apply the scientific method to property determine if we had narrowed down to cause/effect.
Based on my further analysis, he was close, but not right on.  It isn't the BIT rate mode that is causing the crash, but rather the SAMPLE rate.  Turns out that the vast majority of songs in my iTunes library have a sample rate of 44.100 kHz--and those work just fine.  However, I have about 15 songs, mostly downloaded as free background music from the YouTube creation library, that have a sample rate of 48.000 kHz--every single one of those cause my LR6 to crash.
If you're having a problem with Lightroom crashing in the Slideshow module, check the SAMPLE RATE of your music track.

If you're on Windows, check out a free program called Audacity--it's fantastic.  With Audacity the process of converting a 48.000 kHz to 44.100 kHz is as simply as opening, changing the sample rate, and then exporting again, as an MP3.

    Hi Sue,
Does this happen with any particular file or all files?
Since the crash report above mentions accessibility.api, so are you working on any related function like adding tags etc. when Acrobat crashes?
Disable all the 3rd party services working in the background and check.

  • Attempting to set Screen Saver causes System Preferences to crash

EVERY time I go to the System Preferences and try to set the Screen Saver, System Preferences crashes
I moved the .../user/library/preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist.saved and com.apple.systempreferences.plist files out of the directory to my desktop and the problem still happens.
What can I do? Is there a way to remove the screen savers one by one and see if one of them is the cause? Or is there perhaps some other problem?
I get crashes in iPhoto, iWeb, Mail, iCal, Address Book, and Safari, too, but much less often. Is it just bad hardware?

    Ferd II -
From your articles I found a reference to Yasu for Mac OS 10.4. (I tried about 5 other things first to no avail...)
Running Yasu in it's default configuration fixed my problem, made my system boot faster after that first reboot, and seems to have given my entire MacBook a nice theraputic massage.
Some items that seemed slower at first after running Yasu are:
    image caches in applications
well, lo and behold! caching of anything in applications. Which is what SHOULD happen since Yasu wipes out caches. With that understanding, I can say that running Yasu is going to be the first thing I do whenever I am trying randonm fix-its on weird problems.
    Thank you, Dr. Smoke!
    Thank YOU Ferd II!

premiere elements 8 causes my system to crash, suggestions?

Version 8 was a bit unstable upon release anyway. Have you downloaded the patch for it?
Meantime, can you please give us more information? Can you be more specific about the crash? Does it literally cause your computer to shut down and reboot?
At what point does it crash? As soon as you start it, or after you've added media to it? If the latter, what model of camdorder is this video coming from and what format and resolution is it?
What operating system are you using? Have you manually gone to Windows Update and installed the non-critical or optional updates that do not install automatically?

I've searched the forum and found a few threads that sounded like they pertained to this issue, but I didn't see much discussion beyond the question or any answers that had confirmations that they solved the problem.
I've created a slideshow project in iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5), and I used the "Send to iDVD" option from the "Share" menu to send it to iDVD '08 (version 7.0.4). The export appears to work, a menu button appears in iDVD, and I'm able to work in iDVD to make changes to the theme, menu text, etc. However, if I try to actually view the slideshow movie in iDVD (either by double clicking on the menu button in the iDVD interface, or by using the "Preview DVD playback" button and then choosing the movie from the DVD menu), iDVD crashes. This is happening consistently. I've gone to my Movies folder and found the exported movie file that iPhoto created. This plays back in QuickTime Player just fine. If I add the movie to my iDVD project manually (as opposed to using the "Send to iDVD" option in iPhoto), it still causes iDVD to crash if I try to preview it.
Out of curiosity I brought a non-iPhoto generated QuickTime movie into iDVD, and it played back with no problem. I checked the compression format. The movie that worked was an Apple Motion JPG A movie file. I tried another non-iPhoto generated QuickTime movie file. This time iDVD crashed again. I noticed that this second non-iPhoto generated movie file said it was using the "Apple MPEG4 Decompressor" which is the same format as the movie file that iPhoto did create. I then tried an Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2 QuickTime movie file and that worked just fine. Is that the problem? Apple MPEG-4 Decompressor movie files cause iDVD to crash? Could that really be possible when this is the format that iPhoto uses when exporting? Is there a solution? I don't see a way to select a different compression format when exporting/sharing a slideshow from iPhoto.
I discovered this problem while teaching a class to 12 students who don't know much about doing creative projects on a Mac. There are going to be 12 folks who don't think very much of Apple's computers and/or its software if I don't get this problem solved quickly (last day of class is tomorrow). Everything has been going along swimmingly up until this final step of getting the slideshow into iDVD and then burning it to take home. I'm stunned that this isn't working since I've never run into this problem before, but it's happening consistently with every workstation I've tried here in this lab. All computers are running iLife '08. We're all trying to do the same thing. Slideshow project created in iPhoto, trying to send it to iDVD for burning. I been doing stuff with iPhoto and iDVD for years without problems, so I didn't think I needed to run through an entire process here in this lab before teaching the class. I just expected everything to work like it always does. D'oh!
    Help!

    UPDATE:
In case you're interested.... Just because iDVD crashes when I try to preview my slideshow movie from iPhoto doesn't mean I can't successfully burn my DVD project to disc. I was skeptical, but it works. The burn process went off without a hitch, and the DVD plays back using Mac OS X's built-in DVD Player.
Another workaround is to use the "OneStep DVD from Movie..." option in the iDVD file menu and avoid working inside of iDVD.
Someone suggested that perhaps my trouble was connected to using a legacy theme as opposed to one of the newest 7.0 themes. Any truth to that?
Just because I can burn a DVD successfully doesn't mean I wouldn't still like to fix the crash problem if possible. I'm grateful that I now know that I can work around the crashing problem, but I do think it's something that should be fixed and not just avoided.

  • InDesign CS6 Causes System Crash

I installed the trial version of InDesign CS6, When I try to open Mini Bridge my System automatically crashes, I get the "Blue Screen of Death". I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bits. I need help, I'm afraid to open any other tool cuz' it could make my system crash again. Can someone help me?
    Thank's.

What Bob is telling you is correct. The way operating systems and application programs work together is that the operating system “catches” any program errors or crashes and results in a “program error” message. Other applications continue to run and the integrity of the system is maintained.
A BSOD, Blue Screen of Death, is the result of either of the following:
    (1) An unrecoverable hardware error occurs including problems with memory, disk drive, disk driver controller, video card, CPU, etc.
    (2) A programming error occurs in the operating system itself from which the operating system cannot gracefully recover.
    (3) A programming error occurs in system level components such as video drivers.
    (4) Some combination of the above.
Adobe applications drive the video hardware and video drivers in ways that most other applications don't, often accessing the video card's GPU if the card has one. You may wish to check whether an updated video driver is available for your particular video card. If not, you may try reconfiguring your system to use the standard VGA driver and see if the crashes stop. If they do, then the video driver is the likely cause of the crashes. If the crashes continue you may want to have further diagnostics run on your system, especially memory diagnostics. InDesign does tend to use as much of the memory as you have up to 2GB or main memory. If you are running additional applications concurrent with InDesign, you may be exercising memory that isn't otherwise frequently accessed - and that memory may be problematic.

  • System Preferences crash--caused by the FlashPlayer-10.4-10.5 plug-in. Any ideas?

I recently updated to Firefox 5 and noticed my screen saver had changed. I tried to change it back, but when I clicked on the screen saver tab, my System Preferences crashed with this message: "The problem may have been caused by the FlashPlayer-10.4-10.5 plug-in." I've tried repairing permissions to no avail. Any other ideas? Thanks in advance.

I am having the same problem and finding it quite frustrating. Although for me it was not a Firefox update that caused the trouble, rather it was the Flash Player update. When I reverted to an older version of FP it worked again fine, but video (youtube and hulu) didn't work properly and asked me to update. When I did the same crashing problem happens again.
I've spent a while searching for fixes but found nothing....
