Slideshow music to 'fit' to slideshow duration in iMovie

Hello all,
I am an Apple convert, and recently bought a new 24" iMac with iLife 08.
I have had problems with iDVD photo slideshows, where the music 'jumps' throughout slideshows. So I've started using iMovie for slideshows instead.
However, I can't seem to find a way to make the music 'fit' to the slideshow duration...are there any tricks for this? or would iMovie 6 HD do a better job?
I hope you someone can provide some suggestions. Thank you.

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
One of the features of im08 over other editing software is that it should do exactly what you are looking to do by you simply dropping music into the background. It should then trim the music to the length of the video and auto fade it as the video comes to an end.
Can you tell us exactly what it isn't doing for you.

  • Automatic slideshow duration to match timeline length?

I set up a slideshow in the iMovie timeline of about 60 pictures, between which I had a fade out, fade in transition. I then dragged two songs to the time line and they seemed to fit the length of the slideshow automatically.
I decided to change one of the songs and now the timeline is about a minute longer so that the slideshow pictures end long before the music does.
Is there a way for iMovie to automatically resize the duration of each clip and transition to fill the length of the timeline? I don't know if I'll have the time to go through each clip and transition and change the duration of them all to equal the length of the songs. Can iMovie do this for me?

Unlike iPhoto slideshows, iMovie has no "fit to music" command.
But it's not hard to do manually. Note that iMovie lets us set the playtime duration of a fistful of photos all at the same time. Do the math for a rough estimate of the duration needed for each slide, select all the slides, then apply that duration to all. If it's off by a few seconds, adjust them accordingly.
It helps to import the images as stills, not rendered clips, so their duration can be changed quickly. Turn OFF the Ken Burns checkbox while importing the images, so the duration of a group of stills can be changed almost instantly. After it's what you want, THEN apply transitions. (They too can be applied to multiple clips.)
Remember to take the playtime of the durations into account in your plans. And whatever padding you want at the start/end for titles, etcetera.
This topic shows how to set the slides to match the beat of the music. Some of what it describes applies to your task too:

  • IPhoto slideshow imported into iMovie  - photos no longer fit in frame

I imported an iPhoto slideshow into iMovie. The event that is created matches the iPhoto slideshow. However, when I drop the iPhoto slideshow into into the new project, I am losing the tops and bottoms of my photos. For most of the photos this is okay, but for some it end up chopping off heads! I have gone back to iPhoto and adjusted photos to add dead space at top/bottom of photos, but this is not possible in all cases.
I exported from iPhoto using Export/Display mode per the instructor in the One to One class.
This project is a workaround to my original problem of distortion issues when I created the slideshow directly in iMovie.
Have a hard deadline to meet, any help would be appreciated!

When creating a slideshow in iPhoto (for sharing), you can select an appropriate aspect ratio to suit your target, i.e., where you intend to use the slideshow.
After clicking the + button in the bottom left corner of iPhoto and selecting Slideshow, click on the Settings tab. At the base of the Slideshow Settings window you can select the aspect ratio. Mine shows the following choices:
    This screen (16:10)
    HDTV (16:9)
    TV (4:3)
    iPhone (3:2)
When creating a slideshow that I intend to import to iMovie '09 I always select the HDTV setting (16:9). This works well, providing you initially position individual slides appropriately in your iPhoto slideshow, e.g, to prevent heads being chopped off!

  • Music to Fit in Keynote?

I am creating a slideshow and am using KN. I chose KN instead of an iPhoto slideshow as I needed to put words along w/ the photo's. I also have it set to music. Two questions: is this really the best way for me to do this - my MBPro will be hooked up to a projector where the project will be projected onto a screen.
Second, I created the project on my iMac Intel and need to get it into the MBPro...it is 21MB. Best way to do this?
Third, is there a way to make the slideshow fit to the duration of the music?
    Thanks in advance! Karen

Keynote is a better option that iPhoto for this, yes.

A thumb drive, or burn a CD if you're not going to ever need to make changes to it.

I haven't done this, so that part I can't answer.

  • Video Slideshow Creation in iMovie (Ken Burns Effect)

I'm trying to create a slideshow video in iMovie. The process seemed pretty straight forward, and seemed to be going nicely. I got all the images imported into iMovie and added the music to the timeline as I wanted. When I previewed my results though, I was less than pleased.
After viewing the preview, the Ken Burns effect was the exact same zoom/pan for every picture--it wasn't randomizing the effect like it does when you do a slideshow from within iPhoto or Front Row. Any way to get it to randomize the effect? There's just way to many pictures in this compilation (250+) to go through and change it up a bit for each.
At this point, I figured I'd just go with the slideshow export feature in iPhoto since it does randomize the Burns effect. Yeah, that didn't go so hot either. Apparently, you can only add one music track, so I had to find a utility to combine the MP3s we were going to be using. Looked like this was going to work until we played it after the (LONG!) export process. Turns out, the slideshow somehow ended up a whole four minutes shorter than what I had in iMovie. Apparently the default transition speed of 5 seconds does not hold true to iPhoto slideshows. Plus, much to my surprise there is absolutely no fade-out in the music at the end--it just abrubtly stops. Not cool.
There's got to be a way to make that (very cool) Ken Burns effect randomize in iMovies I'd think. Any suggestions?

Although you cannot permanently remove the Ken Burns effect option, you can set your default to having it off.
You need to apply your settings to a particular photo and then the changes should be the new default.
Drag any photo into the timeline. Select 'show photo settings' and deselect KB effect and update that photo.
Close or hide photo settings. Click on something else. If you don't want the photo in your timeline, delete it.
When you open the 'show photo settings' again, your recent changes should be there.
If this process does not work for you, try deleting iMovie's preference file.
With iMovie closed, go to your Home file(YourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imovie.plist
Drag this plist file to the trash. iMovie will create a new one when you reopen it.
    Reopen iMovie.

    Hi
Time needed can depend on several things.
    • less than 5 GB free space on Start-up (Mac OS) hard disk = Redicolous long times AND a DVD that most probably will not work OK
Medicine - I never go under 25GB free space
    • Use of strange file formats into iDVD - can force it to de-code first then re-encode - this can take long long times
    I use
Video - StreamingDV as from miniDV tape Cameras - or QuickTime Movies Converted to StreamingDV
    Audio - .aiff 16-bit 48 kHz - (no .mp3, .wma etc)
    • Use of old Mac - My G4 600MHz took about 24 hour per hour movie. my dG5 - about 2 hours per hour (I use Pro Quality encoding)
    • Pro Quality encoding - takes about x2 to process a movie

How to change the clip's duration under imovie 10.0.3?

This is a new feature introduced in 10.0.3 which works fine for me.  The old way was to select Modify - Fast Forward.  You can only select certain speed ratios but a slider should appear near the top of the clip which allows finer speed adjustment.  have you tried this?

  • Is it permissible to upload a video on youtube with music, sounds effects, and video effects from imovie?

Lately, I've been editing and making videos for a local church in Mexico. I am not selling any of the videos. The are free to watch. However, is it permissible to upload a video with music, sound effects, and video effects from imovie? I using imovie version 10.0.2

This question comes up from time to time.
There are a number of con-men who think that they can earn a quick buck from claiming that they own the copyright to Apple’s royalty-free jingles and sound effects included with the iLife applications. These are all free to use, as clearly stated in section 2.C of the iLife Software License Agreement:
“You may use the Apple and third party audio content (“Audio Content”) contained in or otherwise included with the Apple software, on a royalty-free basis, to create your own original soundtracks for your video and audio projects. You may broadcast and/or distribute your own soundtracks that were created using the Audio Content, however, individual samples, sound sets, or audio content may not be commercially or otherwise distributed on a standalone basis, nor may they be repackaged in whole or in part as audio samples, sound files, sound effects or music beds.”

  • Slideshow Duration - Fit to Music Problem

I was very happy when Lightroom 3 Beta 1 adjusted the duration of slides to fit the length of the music. But, I noticed the feature no longer worked in Lightroom Beta 2. I was hoping that Adobe would fix the 'bug' before the final release.
I have installed the Lightroom 3 and was very disappointed that the problem is still there. I am running  Mac Pro with OS X 10.5.8. My slideshow is with about 190 slides and the music is about 19 minutes long (so the slide duration is ~ 5 sec with the Fade duration of 1.2 sec). After I selected the slides and the MP3 music, I clicked on the "Fit To Music" button under Soundtrack. I could see the duration of slide changed, which should be the case. But, the result was that the slideshow finished way ahead of the music.
Did I miss anything in my process? I have played with adjusting the 'Fade duration' before clicking the "Fit To Music" button, and I could see the Slide duration change every time. Is there a limit of number of slides in a slideshow in order for the Fit To Music feature works properly?
Thank you for your help in advance.
    Stephen

I agree that it's quite bad to have a feature so blatantly not working as it's supposed to... Since I have no idea how to succesfully work around this issue in LR4 I tried other options for the slideshow feature...
FotoMagico seem solid and has additional features as individual slide duration and individual transition times... It has some quirks too... The audio fades with the slide transition at times... The biggest draw back (and maybe I haven't found good settings yet) is that the rendered 720p HD slideshow didn't look half as good as the one rendered in LR4 at pretty much the same file size...
Then I tried Aperture... Which has pretty neat slideshow functions as well... Lets you adjust the audio placement freely... But the filesize exported with the standard 720p setting was about 4 times bigger... Now doing tests what custom settings will yield acceptable quality files with acceptable filesizes.

  • Getting slideshow photos in imovie to fit audio

I have spent too many hours tonight trying to get all my pictures (with the Ken Burns effect on) to fit perfectly to a song that is 6 minutes and 18 seconds long. Now all the pictures stay on the screen for different lengths of time. Is there any way to highlight all the photos in my slideshow within imovie and have them all be adjusted in one fell swoop to stay on the screen for the entire length of the song I have chosen...without me needing to do the math to figure out how many pics I have and how many seconds each should stay on screen? I really want the computer to do this for me. Is there a way???? TIA

This link describes how to synchronize images to the beat of music. That's not your goal, but some of the techniques it describes may apply:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@@.68a8c722
Note that until you render the images into video clips, it takes just a moment to Update all the images to a new duration. Turn OFF the KB checkbox, select all the images in the timeline, apply the same KB duration to each, then tweak that duration and Update until they match the play time of the music. THEN turn on the KB checkbox, adjust the zoom(?), and Update to render the images.
(You want them rendered to avoid an iMovie bug adding jaggies to the images when you press the Create iDVD Project button. iMovie will ask to render them, and if you permit it, iMovie will add lots of jaggies.)
And don't miss iMovie HD's new Edit > Select Similar Clips command.

  • CS5 Slideshow duration won't update to new audio clip

In a completed slideshow with "Fit slideshow to audio duration" checked (duration 00;19;32;24), I decided to replace the audio with a shorter composition (00;10;00;22). With the original audio clip cleared and the new audio clip added and the "Fit slideshow to audio duration" checked, the slide durations recalculated so that the last slide has an out point of 00;10;00;22 but the slide show duration remains "stuck" at  00;19;32;24. The end action is set to return to the menu but when the last slide goes to black (at 00;10;00;22) the slideshow keeps running with a black screen, presumably all the way to 00;19;32;24 before it hits the end action, although I haven't let it run to that point yet. I have turned "Fit slideshow to audio duration" off and back on, hoping it will recalibrate to 00;10;00;22 but the duration doesn't change. Help, please!

    Try playing with these ideas:
Uncheck "Fit Slideshow to Audio Duration."  (As you probably now have it anyway.)
On the slideshow properties, basic tab, set the slide duration to zero.  What is the slideshow length now?  The length of the new audio or the old?
Or, set the slide duration to something large (I think so that the total is more than either audio length).  What is the slideshow length?
Now check "Fit slideshow/audio."  What is the length?
I got the same symptom you did (audio plays past end of slides) when the slide durations added to less than the audio length and "Fit slideshow to audio" was not checked.

  • How do I burn a slideshow made in iMovie (367 photos plus transitions and music) to dvd to play on dvd player? I have iDVD.

I've made a slideshow (about 24 mins) in iMovie and 'shared' it onto my desktop. I've tried to burn it to dvd (+R) lots of different ways but all failed.  I have iDVD on my MAC and am using Mavericks.  I'm putting it down to 'pilot error' or possibly my age!!! :-)) Will appreciate step-by-step guidance, thank you.

Share to file in iMovie 10 and in the next dialog window change the dimensions to 480 and save to Desktop.
Open iDVD and start a new project. Drag the Desktop .mp4 file onto the iDVD project window.

  • Distorted stills in a slideshow created in IMovie

Hello everyone. I have created a 3 minute slideshow with stills from IPhoto, transitions, and music and I have noticed when I view the project in full screen mode there is very noticeable distortion in the video. It looks like a bad tv image, wavy lines moving horizontally and only in one section of the screen. I have burned it to a CDRW disc and it is just as bad on a television.
What would be causing this, and how do i correct it? Thanks for the help.

James, viewing an iMovie project at full size is not a fair test of image quality. It forces iMovie to display the movie image larger than its natural size, which reduces the quality. It's like viewing a 1600 x 1200 iPhoto image at 6400 x 4800.
Be aware too that iMovie never shows you all the quality that's actually there, even when played at the best size.
There are many threads here that discuss image quality. Search the forum for "blurry", "jaggies" and related terms.
Watch out too for the iMovie bug that adds jaggies to the images when you press the "Create iDVD Project" button in the iDVD tab of iMovie. (Search for that.) If quality was reduced when you pressed the button, that may be the cause of the problem.

  • Make music to fit

Hello, I have a music peace for my automatically running and looping presentation – but music is longer than the presentation and runs on, when nothing more is to be seen.
    Now:
How can I shorten the music track (an where is it) in Keynote?
    Or:
How can I find out the duration of the presentation to make music the same length?
    Thanks for help!

Input the music in to Garage Band and shorten it to fit the length of the presentation. This will also allow you to pick a start point for the music. In other words, maybe you don't want the very beginning of the song because it starts off too quiet. You'll be able to start the music at the exact point where you want it. You'll also be able to control the volume. If you want it to start off soft, pick up volume in the middle, and end soft, you can do that, too.
    I hope this helps!
