Slideshow screensaver won't work/locks system

When I try to make a slideshow screensaver it locks up System Preferences and then the whole computer. I have to use the on/off button to force quit it. It won't show the option to use subfolders to make a screensaver slideshow like it did before I updated from Snow Leopard. It worked then but since I updated to Mountain Lion 10.8.3 it's stopped working. Ironically this is one of the bugs 10.8.3 is supposed to fix. It's very frustrating and I can't find anything on the web to help me. Any ideas?

Album Art screensaver won't work w/iTunes 9

I just updated to iTunes 9 and now my screensaver won't work. I use the standard Apple iTunes artwork screensaver. It say "You're iTunes library does not contain any songs with artwork". Any ideas? I closed iTunes, reopened it, restarted it. Obviously all my songs and artwork are still here.

I was having the same problem and think I have a solution. Our iTunes folder is in our shared folder not in the original music folder.
My wife was charging her iPod and left the computer running when I noticed the album artwork screensaver displaying proudly. On a hunch I compared our iTunes folders in our Music Folder (~/music/itunes) and noticed I had an extra "iTunes music" folder within. Since my music is stored elsewhere it was empty. I believe the screen saver was searching this empty folder for artwork. I moved it to the trash and started the screen saver preference and lo and behold it now works.
Please check the folder for content before deleting it. For me it was empty. My daughter had the same issues also and trashing this file worked.

IPhoto and Apple ID won't work after system update

I've recently updated my MacBook Air to OS X v10.9.4. iPhoto won't work as i am currently using v9.2. I've tried downloading a later version but have been advised that my Apple ID will not work on this computer. NB. I have an iPhone but have not used the Apple ID on this - to my knowledge, or another Apple ID on my system. I'm a basic level user so any advice on this would be great.

[SOLVED] MPD won't work on system startup

I have just installed and configured mpd today, and it works fine if I start it up manually using "/etc/rc.d/mpd start", however, it fails to start up automatically when I put it in the daemons list in my rc.conf. I have full rights to the ~/.mpd/ directory (since it's in my home folder) and the Music directory. My music database built fine, and everything works fine if I start it up manually. I don't get why it fails to start on system boot.
Here's my daemons list:

Hmm. I believe I found the problem. I removed the @ in front of all the daemons to let them start up in order instead of in the background, and everything starts up perfect.
I wonder which daemon MPD relies on that's causing it to fail. Network maybe? Anyone have any ideas?

Screensaver won't work

i downloaded a free james dean screensaver that is supposed to work with macs. it goes on my desktop, but when i go under screensavers, it wont open. when i open the desktop folder it says that there is nothing in there in terms of pictures. help!

Screensaver won't work in windows 8

I have tried to get any screensaver to work in windows 8 and don't know what the problem is. I select any one of them, preview them, set time and turn each on but none of them respond and screen just goes blank when screensaver should kick in. I
am using IE 10. I have tried all maintenance troubleshooting options but nothing comes up. Has anyone had this problem and know what is causing the problem and know how I can get this feature working properly again?

IE 10 should not affect the screensaver.
I suggest to boot with Clean Boot for test:

If the issue persists, try to create another administrator account and login to see if the same issue occurs.

You could try this...
Triple click anywhere in the line below to select it and press Ctrl+C to copy it.
cmd /k assoc .scr scrfile
Press the WinLogoKey+R to open the run dialog, then Ctrl+V to paste, then press enter/return.
In principle that should restore the correct file association for screensaver files.

IPhoto slideshow music won't work after updates

I installed the two latest updates from Apple (iTunes and Quicktime, I think) yesterday evening, and now when I try to Share an iPhoto slideshow as a QT movie, the music doesn't come through. I used Disk Utility to repair disk permissions, but that didn't help. I send slideshows to my friends all the time -- this problem occurred only after the latest updates were installed so I know that one (or both?) is the problem. I am really frustrated! Is there anything I can do other than wait for Apple to offer an update to their update?

Are you able to open iPhoto's preferences easily? That and the music issue was a bug in an earlier version of iPhoto 7. Be sure you've updated to 7.1.3 and have applied the iLife Support 8.2 updater.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Display on new MBP goes dim and screensaver won't work

Hi Folks-
I just got a new MBP and I'm having a couple of problems with the display.
1. The display goes to a dim condition when the MPB is idle. The slider under displays is all the way up and I turned the ambient light setting off. I get brightness back when Igo into displays and clickon the slider, but that is difficult to navigate on a dark screen and time consuming.
2. The screen saver just plain doesn't work. The computer starts the screen saver and then it jumps back with a flash and strange grid pattern, eventually settling on the screen where it had been. Then it will flash the grid pattern about every 30 seconds. It is very irritating to have this flash out of the corner of my eye.
Any suggestions folks?

HT4972 previously used apps won't work after system restore?ipod touch 2nd gen.?

My son forgot his passcode so I had to restore his ipod touch, 2nd gen. After the restore, many of his apps no longer work. He had Netflix, Facebook, Angry Birds. They now all say they require ios 4.3 or 5.0. Does anyone know how to get these apps back on his ipod? thanks!

Many developers when they updated their apps to support iOS 5 and 6 dropped compatibility for iOS 4.2.1 and earlier.
Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.

Slideshows just won't work (iPhoto 9.1.2)

I've just realized that I cannot do slideshows in iPhoto at all. I've been using this feature in the past but it was on an old version of iPhoto on my previous mac, and I think it's the first time I try on this one (MBP 13'', osx 10.6.7, iPhoto 9.1.2).
For example, in the "Events" view, when I click on the "Slideshow" icon in the bottom bar, the screen goes black just for an instant but then instead of actually playing anything, it goes back to the "Events" view.
Another symptom that must be related is that when I click "File -> New -> Slideshow", the slideshow-album does not get created correctly. What I get is an empty view with an empty row at the top (where the thumbnails should be) and a large black rectangle below. And again, if I click "play" the screen goes black only for an instant, just as if my slideshow was supposed to be zero seconds long.
Well, I am aware that this description of my problem is quite dodgy, but I don't know where to look for clues and I feel a bit lost (not that I really really need slideshows, but still this bug is kind of annoying).
Any insight would be welcome,

Mine is with the same build number (I suppose that 9.1.2 == build 605, and that build 605 == 9.1.2).
But I realize maybe one thing I did wrong was with the receipts thing. There were no pkg files per se (i.e. files with names ending in .pkg) but I had plenty of other files :

Airport assistant in 10.8 won't work with airport express

I updated to OS 10.8 from 10.6 and now the airpot utility says that it sees my airport express (about 4 yrs old) but
"This version of AirPort Utility doesn’t support this base station" I tried an earlier version of airport utility but it won't work with system 10.8. Does anyone have a work around?

Your Express is most likely over five years old.
You need AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure an older Express. The problem with that version is that Mountain Lion will refuse to let you install it.
This dilemma is easily solved. You simply need to extract the app from the installer package using a package extractor like Pacifist or unpkg. Pacifist is shareware, unpkg is free.

When the AirPort Utility .dmg file finishes downloading, open it to expand and reveal the AirPortUtility56.pkg package installer file.
Directions for Pacifist (I do not have screenshots for unpkg but the idea is similar):
Open Pacifist and from its File menu, navigate to the package and open it.
Click the "reveal triangles" until you see AirPort Utility 5.6.app:
Select it and then click Install from Pacifist's toolbar. It will then be installed in your Utilities folder, and you can quit Pacifist.
The most recent version of AirPort Utility included with Mountain Lion should be used to configure 802.11n - capable AirPort Base Stations. Make no attempt to delete it. It and the older version (which will bear the unique name "AirPort Utility 5.6") can peacefully coexist. Use the older version only as necessary for older AirPort Base Stations that cannot be administered any other way.
If you happen to have an archived copy of the AU 5.6 app somewhere, such as a Time Machine backup or equivalent, you can simply restore it or drag the app to your Mountain Lion system's Utilities folder instead of resorting to the above procedure. It will run without complaint. It is only the package installer that is the problem.
Keep in mind that Apple's decision to abandon support for your original AirPort Express was for reasons known only to them. Remember that you are using obsolete equipment, should some future OS X feature not work for you.

Since the iOS7 update on my iPad 2, I am having trouble charging it if it runs all the way down, and now, my Safari won't work at all, and it locks up when I click on Safari in the Setting section. I have tried restoring, and Safari still does not work??

I cannot reset the Ipad either, Safari won't work, and it won't charge properly if the battery runs all the way down...

Thanks for that. Much more constructive than the last comment. It's only the restriction code I can't recall, not the access passcode. So I can currently access the device, just not age restricted content. Does that's make a difference? I also wondered if anyone knew how many attempts you get to try to get it right. Now tried 21 times and so far nothing bad has happened but I am concerned I'll eventually be completely locked out of the device. That doesn't seem in the spirit of things though. Surely it's foreseeable that a child could repeatedly try to guess the code so I can't see that it would be right to lock the device down completely in that circumstance, particularly if the access code is being typed in correctly every time.
